Living On The Edge

October 2020

Club Manager Message Dear Ocean Edge Club Members, Happy October! Step II of Phase III has begun, which provides for a few adjustments within the Club operations. Golf being the primary benefactor for this stage as double rider carts, outside of the household, are now permitted. If you are comfortable sharing a golf cart with your golfing partner, enjoy the option; however, please know it is not mandatory. Single rider carts are still available and we encourage you to maintain your safety and wellbeing at all times. Bunker rakes are allowed back on the course, and you are now allowed to pull the pin if you choose. Again, both are options for you as a player to exercise at your choice. Gyms were listed to now allow up to 50% of occupancy as long as 6-feet of social distancing is maintained. In speaking with our local Board of Health, they are recommending to maintain our current occupancy; however, all equipment can now be available, with the same distancing restrictions of 14-feet between fitness participants. Indoor classes still require the instructor and the class participants to wear masks; therefore, for the time being we will be maintaining the outdoor classes and Zoom programming. With outdoor limitations expanded with respect to seating capacities, we are planning some social opportunities for October. A “Front Lawn social will be hosted on Saturday, October 17. 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Advance reservations will be required so that adherence to all guidelines can be implemented. Jessie Getlick, Director of Fun and Entertainment, has an October Halloween schedule put together that hopefully you and your families can enjoy! Lastly, for those who have not used your certificate that is on your account due to the period of time that the Club was closed, upon your next visit to the Club, please remind the staff member at time of service to post against your gift card. The gift card number is your primary account number which is readily available to the server when you present your membership card. Thank you and hopefully this will assist you with using your account gift certificate on your next visit. Hopefully, this news finds you well and as a sign of encouragement that the State and our local Board of Health feel confident that these new guidelines will be well received. From the Club perspective, it is great to be able to offer a wider range of services and amenities to you, our valued members. Thank you for your understanding and support throughout these times. Sincerely, Michael Medeiros Club Manager

Member Relations & Communications As the 2020 summer season comes to an end, I have a whirlwind of unique experiences to reflect on as this was my first summer at Ocean Edge. When I made my move to Ocean Edge in February, I had no idea what to expect, and now I feel like “expect the unexpected” is a true understatement. This summer sure did prove to be “the unexpected” when I compare it to everything I thought it was going to be in February. I was so looking forward to bringing some new and fresh ideas to the communications side of the Club, primarily with socials and good communications practices. While there has been positive feedback on communications improvements that have been implemented in this strange season, I am still equally as eager as I was at the start of the year to bring additional ideas to a more “normal” summer 2021. In the meantime, I am very excited that the state has now expanded limitations in regard to socials. With that being said, I invite Members to sign up on the Club calendar for our upcoming social. The Ocean Edge “New Normal” Pizza Social sign up can be accessed by clicking the event title in orange on the Club calendar, followed by clicking “Register Online Today”. I encourage Members to sign up in advance as the social is limited to 50 attendees. Additional details are at the end of this newsletter. See you there! I was recently asked by two members who I have gotten to know well through this summer how many people I feel I really got to know this season. I am proud to say I have gotten to know many of you, our Members, either in person, over the phone or online. As more Members made their way to Ocean Edge through the summer, it was fun to put masked faces to voices I had gotten to know over the phone. I have certainly enjoyed the time I have spent getting to know many of you, and I hope you have found the communications pieces I’ve relayed to be informative and helpful. I look forward to seeing more returning and new faces as we move into fall. As always, please reach out with any membership or communications related questions. I continueto be at the front desk in the Linx, so please don’t hesitate to stop by through the rest of the year if we have not yet met. Sincerely, Emma Haselton Member Relations & Communications Manager

Golf News I would like to first thank each of you for the warm welcome I have received since starting here at Ocean Edge. Given our current circumstances, I have been impressed by the overall golf operations and how the membership has been patient and understanding with the restrictions we have been operating under. Please know that I am here to help assist each of you in anyway I can. Feel free to reach out to me anytime. It is hard to believe that fall is already here. I hope each of you has a chance to enjoy these cooler temperatures by getting out on the course or doing what you enjoy most outdoors. Cape Cod is a beautiful area, and I am glad I get to experience it. Most of our events have wrapped up for the year. Those of you who participated in our major events throughout the year and came out victorious, I would like to extend my congratulations! Good luck defending your titles next year. On a topic of golf course etiquette, a few items need to be mentioned. When you use a cart for your round of golf, please keep your cart (all four tires) on the cart path around the tees and near the greens. When driving down the fairway, keep the cart on the short grass and avoid going onto the long wispy grass that surrounds the edges of each fairway. We have noticed more wear and tear near these areas recently. On all par 3s, please keep the cart on the cart path at all times. Following these simple guidelines will help maintain our beautiful course conditions. Additionally, effective now, per Governor Baker’s Phase III reopening update, three changes to golf will occur. We will now be able to reintroduce double rider carts, flagstick removal and rakes back into the bunkers. I would like to again thank you all for your warm welcome and I look forward to seeing you out on the course.

Sincerely, Erick G. Womack Interim Director of Golf

Tennis News The Bay Pines Tennis Shop will be staffed and open until at least October 17th. I will be offering clinics and round robins throughout this period. Pickleball will continue as long as the weather permits, and the Fletcher and Bay Pines courts are always accessible via the pool attendants. Kandy, Phil an I, as well as the rest of the tennis staff, appreciate everyone’s participation in the Covid guidelines, masks and distancing this challenging season. Participation was up over 25%, and there is a great feeling of community and safety with tennis and pickleball. Looking forward to 2021, we hope all will be back to “normal”, and we will be offering many of our wonderful events again. We will hold three Member events with parties to follow and special mixed doubles events. Our women’s, men’s and junior’s team practices and inter club matches will resume against neighboring clubls. We will have a full time pickleball pro with round robins, clinics and events. We will be resurrecting our tennis club championships and beginning pickleball club championships. We look forward to a great 2021 and thanks for a wonderful 2020.

Sincerely, Jim Leahy Director of Tennis

Agronomy News As we powered through September some of our cold mornings remind us that we are closing in on the homestretch of the golf season. I hope everyone enjoys what, in my opinion, is the best times for golf, which is our extend fall golf season here on the Cape Cod. While we enjoy the much more comfortable weather, the work for the Agronomy team only increases. The fall months allow us to turn our attention from just maintaining the course through the summer months to now attacking our projects and improvements we have planned for the course. Our best and most important course projects is rehabbing from our tough and stressful summer. The heat, humidity and lack of rain fall has made for stressful conditions on our turf. We have begun to attack our weaker areas. We use many different methods from aerating, slice seeding and sodding. Fall is the best time of the year to germinate grass seed. There is no competition from weeds as there is in the springtime seeding. With a little help from mother natural in the rain department we should have great recovery weather. One of the benefits in doing this type of work is we are able to introduce newer turfgrass varieties with better performing cultivars into these stressed areas. Newer grass types are bred with much better characteristic such as greater heat and drought tolerances, disease resistance and more aggressive growth habits. These attributes make for a better chance at having a health plant throughout the season. Aerification will be our most involved practice for October. We were able to aerate, top dress, fertilize and overseeded tees in September. With great weather tees were healed up in under 2 weeks making for a great surface the remaining fall golf season. Leaving us with greens, approaches, fairways, rough. Greens aeration is scheduled for the week of October 19th. Hope everyone gets out to enjoy the remaining golf season!

Sincerely, Craig Sullivan Golf Course Superintendent

Fitness News Effective now, per Governor Baker’s Phase III reopening update, Member Sports Club will now be able to accommodate 8 people per workout session. Members and Guests must continue to call Member Sports Club ahead to reserve their workout session at 774-323-6300. All reservations are first come, first serve. We hope you are enjoying this beautiful weather! The cool weather will be here soon, so here is a healthy fall risotto recipe. Enjoy! Ingredients 1 cup arborio rice 3+ cups of mushroom or vegetable broth 1 small apple, diced 1/2 onion, chopped 1 1/2 cups butternut squash, diced 1/2 cup carrot or sweet potato, diced (or use more squash) 1/2 cup celery, chopped 1 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil or safflower oil salt + pepper to taste 1/3 cup sliced almonds fresh sage non-dairy (plain) creamer or milk (warmed – optional) 1 Tbsp of fresh mixed herbs: fresh thyme, chopped rosemary, chopped sage 1. In a large saute or sauce pan, add the risotto rice and 1 cup of the broth. Turn heat to medium high and bring to a boil. When boiling, begin to stir the rice with a large spoon or spatula. Keep stirring casually until the liquid has absorbed. Add in the remaining amount of broth in splashes as you keep stirring – until all the rice has absorbed the liquid. Now do a taste test of the rice. It should be velvety and tender when ready, so if the inside still tastes al dente, add in a few more splashes of broth. Keep adding until the rice is as tender as you’d like it. I like my rice very soft, so I usually add in about 3 1/2 cups of broth. 2. While your rice is cooking, you can do your harvest mix. You can either roast all these ingredients in the over (400 degrees for about 20 minutes) – or you can saute them in 1 Tbsp of olive oil. Whichever method you use, just cook until tender and ready to eat. 3. When both your rice and harvest mix components are cooked, you will not combine them to serve. Per one serving: add 1 cup of the risotto to a saute pan, over medium heat. Add in the almonds and fold well. Add in one fresh sage leaf torn into pieces. Fold well. Lastly, gently fold in 1/2 cup of the harvest mix. Allow to warm a bit then transfer to serving plate. Top with another spoonful of harvest mix and some fresh sage and almonds to garnish! Pepper on top is nice too. Add a splash of warmed non-dairy milk or creamer over top if desired. Sincerely, Heidi VanAmburgh Member Sports Club Manager
