September and October are great months to be on Cape and at the Club. For many of our members, it is an opportunity to relax and enjoy all that the club has to offer with golf, tennis, pickleball, Friday Nights at the Linx, the October Wine Dinner, and many other opportunities to meet up with friends and family. For some, it is the opportunity to explore and experience local flavors at our favorite restaurants that we may have missed during the summer season. Whatever your plans may be, please know that the Club is here for you, your family, and your guests, to enjoy throughout the year!

David & Chana McMillen, Chatham residents, and Golf Members

The summer season has flown by, and Labor Day weekend is fast approaching. The annual Labor Day Clambake has finally returned to our social schedule, and we look forward to closing out the summer season with a great event!

On behalf of the Club Team, I look forward to seeing you throughout the Fall season, and please don’t hesitate to contact me directly if I can be of any assistance. Your feedback is fuel and we look forward to making your time at the Club memorable for you and your family. Thank you for being a valued Member of the Club!

The Members have requested to have the annual Member’s meeting earlier in the year before many make their fall pilgrimage to warmer climates. This year ’ s annual Member’s meeting will be on September 17, 2022, at 9:00 am in the Addie Nickerson Room in the Carriage House. We invite you to attend and meet with Ocean Management and hear their plans for next year. Finally, the Advisory Board is always looking for interested individuals that would like to serve their club. The Board will start taking applications for next year ’ s board in November. The new term starts May 1, 2023, and the term is three years. Hope to see you at the Annual Member’s Meeting.

Greetings to All, We hope you are enjoying your Cape Cod Summer at Ocean Edge.

All the Member’s events have been well attended, and the member feedback is very positive. The Racquet Sports are seeing increased participation, keeping Jim and Marcus on their toes. Golf members are enjoying a course that is in excellent condition, even though Mother Nature has not provided a lot of precipitation. Many thanks to Craig Sullivan and his team. Ocean Edge’s dining venues have provided the members with much improved service and food quality, thanks to the culinary team. The Beach and Pools are getting much attention this summer with the unusual heat.

The Advisory Board has been working with Ocean Edge Management and Troon over the summer months, providing member feedback and concerns. If you need more details, our monthly meeting minutes are posted on the website. Click “Member Resources & Documents” on the Member Home Page; there is a link to the meeting minutes, as well as the Advisory Board Members.

The Member Sports Club is busy with classes in a comfortable setting for those who want to work out in a climate controlled environment. Kaitlin St. Laurent, Member Relations/Communications has been extremely busy keeping us all well-informed with the website and the Weekly Updates.

Step 1: To prepare the kale: Use a chef’s knife to remove the tough ribs from the kale, then discard the ribs. Chop the kale leaves into small, bite sized pieces. Transfer the chopped kale to a big salad bowl. Sprinkle a small pinch of sea salt over the kale and massage the leaves with your hands by lightly scrunching big handfuls at a time, until the leaves are darker in color and fragrant.

Autumn Kale S Ingredients: Dressing L L N E S S

Step 3: To toast the pepitas: In a skillet over medium low heat, toast the nuts, tossing frequently, until fragrant and starting to make little popping noises, about 3 to 6 minutes. Transfer the pepitas to a bowl to cool.

Step 5: To prepare the salad: Add the cooled pepitas to the salad bowl. Drizzle dressing over the salad, just enough to lightly coat the kale once tossed (you might have some leftover dressing). Toss the salad well. For best flavor, let the salad rest for 10 minutes before serving.

1 medium Honeycrisp apple 1 medium bulb of fennel 3 ounces chilled goat cheese, ⅓ cup dried cranberries ¼ cup pepitas (pumpkin se ¼ cup olive oil 1 teaspoon lemon zest 2 tablespoons lemon juice 1 tablespoon maple syrup

1 very large bunch of kale

2 teaspoons Dijon mustard ⅛ teaspoon salt Several twists of freshly ground black pepper

Step 2: To prepare the remaining salad ingredients: Chop the apple into small, bite sized pieces. Use a chef’s knife or mandoline to slice the fennel as thin as possible. Transfer the prepared apple and fennel to the salad bowl. Use a fork to crumble the goat cheese over the salad. Roughly chop the cranberries and add them to the bowl.

Directions:

Step 4: To make the dressing: In a small bowl, whisk together all of the dressing ingredients until emulsified.

As we turn the page to September, the Agronomy Department is very much looking forward to fall weather! Summer 2022 has brought many challenges, most of which are weather-related. Drought, extreme temperatures, and high humidity are the ones most affecting maintenance. We have had a rain deficit of around 9”. We are using our tools to manage mother nature as best we can to be successful. High humidity brings on more disease pressure and the use of our plant protectants to keep disease away. These include dollar spot, brown patch, and pythium blight just to name a few. These left untreated can have disasters that affect turf health. The drought condition makes it more important to use our irrigation water as efficiently as possible. We do this a few different ways. We hand water areas to help reduce the amount of water we use when watering an isolated spot vs spinning irrigation heads to water the same spot. We also use a variety of wetting agents that lower the surface tension of our irrigation water and thus allow it to spread more easily and uniformly. While we can never fully replace lost rainfall we do everything in our power to bridge the gap of a drought.

Sincerely, Craig Sullivan
