UPFRONT february 2017 MANAGEMENT

A chat with Katie Wallis, your Spa & Athletic Services Director CURRENT DAILY BEAUTY ROUTINE: I’m a SkinCeuticals junkie! I use the following products daily: I start with Purifying Cleanser, then C E Ferulic and AOX+ Eye Gel for my daily dose of antioxidants. Then I moisturize with Metacell Renewal B3 and A.G.E. Eye Complex. I finish with Physical Fusion SPF 50—one of my faves! It has a universal tint, so I don’t have to wear makeup. As a mom of two, I have limited time to get ready and need something that lets me cut corners on my routine. FAVORITE BEAUTY LIFE-HACK: Since I

am usually tight on time, I use the Physical Fusion as makeup and the Blinc Brow Mousse, which is an amazing brow mascara that you can lightly swipe on for a more dramatic effect.

BEAUTY MISCONCEPTION THAT DRIVES YOU CRAZY: That you don’t need to wear sunscreen in the winter! Ugh, drives me nuts. There are so many environmental factors that negatively affect the skin, and the UVA/UVB rays still get through the clouds. If people want to look their best as they age and protect themselves from skin cancer, using a daily SPF year-round is a must.

BEST ADVICE EVER RECEIVED: The best advice has always come from my dad. He’s always said, “You have to think bigger than who you are if you want to get something accomplished. In terms of leading a team, you have to adopt a style that is collaborative and respectful—once you’ve done that, your job gets easier.” This is something I have tried to do in my career. SPRING TREND FORECAST: It’s all about brows. Gone are the days of a thin brow line. Clients want a full and dramatic brow line. ONE PROCEDURE YOU WISH EVERYONE WOULD DO: Oh, to pick just one is

very hard, but I would have to say dermaplaning. It’s such an amazing service and has many wonderful benefits. It is an excellent way to exfoliate your skin, reduce visible signs of aging, remove vellus hair (which helps in applying makeup more evenly) and leave your skin glowing. Clearly, I could go on and on about this one.

LOCAL REAL ESTATE EXPERTS FORECAST CONTINUED SELLERS’ MARKET IN 2017 Bellevue-based Coldwell Banker Bain recently released its 2017 market predictions, and the local real estate market shows no signs of slowing down. For its predictions, Coldwell Banker Bain looked at the local employment rate, number of Washington state driver’s licenses issued, and new building permits to create its forecast for the year ahead. “The data shows that the population growth rate in the Puget Sound region, currently at double the national rate, coupled with expected continued strong job growth, is one factor pointing to our main prediction that the real estate market will continue to be as strong as it was in 2016,” said Mike Grady, Coldwell Banker Bain president and COO.

BELLEVUE METRO AREA ONE OF THE BEST FOR YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS The Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue area is seventh-best when it comes to young entrepreneurs, according to a NerdWallet study. The study took into account the area’s population of those age 25-34, percentage of the population with a college education, the per capita amount of Small Business Administration loans, the number of businesses per 100 people, median income, median home price, and unemployment rate. The Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue area narrowly outranked popular-but-spendy startup hub San Francisco, mainly because the median home price is $350,000 lower than that of the Bay Area.

STYLE february 2017

NAILED IT! Nails can make a big statement. Twists on classic designs and entirely new statements are trending for spring nails, and we are here to help you prepare for the coming season. TRENDY FRENCH Simple, classy

French nails are a classic without competition. But this spring, opt out of white tips that curve with your nail and try a funky diagonal approach. Angled white tips are in style.

OMBRE Multi-colored, fun

The best part of this graduated look is that the intensity can be individualized. Simple colors, bold glitters, or both can be used to achieve the fade. GRAPHICS Blocky, geometric

With solid black lines, geometric shapes are painted on the nails. Fill in the shapes with different colors or a solid white background, and don’t be afraid of empty spaces without anything but a topcoat. They really make the shapes pop.

20 | february 2017 reflections

METALLICS Moody, bold

Take a stand with metallics like gold, silver and rose gold. A base coat of a solid color, overlaid with a coat of a metallic polish will intensify the shade.

BLANK SPACE Mysterious, easy

This trend is best described as one matte black stripe and no more. From the tip of the nail to the cuticle, a thick stripe of polish is applied and the sides of the nails are left untouched. Apply a matte finish to the entire nail for a design that will intrigue.

GOLD TRIM Minimal, alluring

Certainly a forward trend, a thin, sparkly gold line is painted around the sides and cuticle of the nail, leaving the tip of the nail bare. A gloss coat covers this statement “gold chain” design.

BEST BEAUTY APPS Want to look your best in 2017? There’s an app for that. w r i t t e n b y k at h ry n s m i t h

THINK DIRTY

Do you really know what’s in your beauty products? Using this app, simply scan a product’s barcode to inspect for harmful chemicals. It rates ingredients as neutral, dirty or half ‘n’ half, making it easy to clean out your toiletries and become a conscious consumer. MYSHADE

Avoid hair color blunders by testing out shades before making a big change. Upload a picture of yourself and the app allows you to overlay colors so you can watch your own look shift. WATER DRINK REMINDER

We all know water is essential to a well-functioning body, and skin health is no exception. Drinking adequate amounts of water helps retain clear, youthful skin. This app reminds you to drink regularly, based on your personal goals and body type. (This app supports Google Fit, so smart watches can be synced.)

STRONG TO THE CORE A STRONG CORE—WHICH INCLUDES THE ABDOMINALS, BACK CHAIN, OBLIQUES, SHOULDERS AND UPPER HAMSTRINGS—IS CRUCIAL FOR KEEPING THE WHOLE BODY HAPPY AND HEALTHY DURING A VARIETY OF ACTIVITIES. BELLEVUE CLUB PERSONAL TRAINER AMY CLARKE CREATED A DYNAMIC CIRCUIT TO WORK ALL THE DIMENSIONS OF YOUR CORE.

#.

MONITORED TUMMY TILT Targets transverse abdominals For this exercise you will need a handheld blood pressure monitor. Begin on your back, and put the pressure cuff under your lower back at roughly belly button height while keeping the gauge in your hand. Tilt your pelvis until the lower back is flat and raise your legs to a 90-degree angle. Notice the number on the gauge, and then tap one foot at a time (or both for an advanced version) while maintaining the number on the gauge. Complete three sets of eight to 10.

#.

DEAD LIFT Targets back and upper hamstrings, improves posture Start standing with your feet hip-width apart and a strong grip on the bar (Amy suggests switching the grip to underhand on one hand and then switching sides for the following set). From the hips, hinge forward keeping your back straight and knees slightly bent until you feel a stretch in your hamstrings. Pushing through the feet, return to a standing position with your hips driving the motion. Complete three sets of eight to 10. 24 | february 2017 reflections

Start facedown in a pronated position on top of a long foam roller with all four limbs touching the ground. Simultaneously lift your right arm and left leg and then switch while balancing on the prop. Complete three sets of eight to 10.

#4.

SIDE PLANK LEG RAISE Targets obliques, abdominals and hip flexors while improving balance Start in a side plank with your top leg on a bench or box. While maintaining your balance, raise and lower the bottom foot to meet the top foot. Switch sides and do the other leg. Complete three sets of eight to 10.

#5.

PLANK CROSS-UNDER Targets shoulders, obliques, back and abdominals Set up in a plank position with a light weight under one hand. Extending from the shoulder, raise the weighted hand straight out to the side. Then rotate and stretch the arm under your body to the other side. Return the arm out straight. Complete three sets of eight to 10.

PERFECTING THE SWING

A

ll the success that Club member Gregg Rogers has had with the game of golf came from being terrible at golf. “When I was a kid I was a fairly good athlete, just not good at golf. For some reason that struck a passion with me, and I had to figure out why I wasn’t performing as well as I’d like to,” Rogers says. “It became a lifelong pursuit that brought me to where I am now; I became obsessed with how to get better at the game.” As a result of that obsession, Rogers turned professional prior to attending Oregon State and University of Arizona. But that only led to another life-changing realization.

“After a short stint of trying to play in the PGA and failing miserably, I began to spend most of my time helping other players get better instead of working on my own game,” Rogers says. “I realized my skill was in assisting others.” In 2007, Rogers’ knack for coaching others created the Gregg Rogers’ Golf Performance Centers, an instruction and club-fitting company that in November 2016 was named on Golf Digest’s list of America’s 100 Best Clubfitters. Now with three locations—in Bellevue, Redmond and Seattle—and a few pop-up simulators around town (including one at Safeco Field), he finds immense joy in employing a whole range of cutting-edge technologies to help players of all levels improve their golf game on the course.

bellevue club february 2017 | 37

TECHNOLOGY FEATURE

Member Gregg Rogers has spent his entire career figuring out how to improve your golf game.

“Technology is great. Technology answers all the questions,” Rogers says. “I think we’re going to see the greatest golfers in the world because of it. When I was a kid, I didn’t have any feedback telling me what was going on, and so what I was correcting wasn’t helping. Really, it’s been in the last 10 or 15 years that we’ve been able to see what’s actually happening. Today, I’m a better golfer than ever, just because the feedback is so much better.” And he isn’t exaggerating.

The TrackMan technology is behind Rogers’ simulator and instruction process. He explains that the precise radar-based system tracks every dimension of a golfer’s swing—including club speed, ball speed, backspin, face angle, swing direction and many more stats. “It’s called D-plane analysis, and basically we can understand how the fundamental relationships of impact and play look for each person. Then we work backward and do a lot of instruction based on the analysis.”

ROGERS’ RECOMMENDATIONS FOR GOLF CONDITIONING “My best advice is to get a trainer at the Club. Sit down with them and outline a program that identifies and assesses flexibility, range of motion, stability and where you need more strength. Then train for exactly what you need.”

On top of an already-strong piece of technology, which Rogers estimates is being used by 80 percent of golf professionals now, he adds other bells and whistles. For example, Rogers integrated a mat that detects weight distribution, which he says is a major key to perfecting and enjoying the game. “The mat allows us to see how the weight distribution coordinates with the motion, so we can tell if the center of gravity is working properly,” Rogers says. “And through 35 years of experience, we’ve come up with a model that’s based on the alignment of the skeleton to take pressure off the joints. It allows the muscles to relax and prevent injury. We guarantee the process will be beneficial and the game will be easier on the body, just based on fundamental skeletal alignment.” Rogers is also a big fan of the SAM PuttLab, which uses ultrasound to break down all the movements involved with game on the green. “All the technology we have allows the player to feel exactly what it is they should be doing in order to perform better,” Rogers says. “Once you have that feeling, you can take it to the golf course and implement it in the game. Then you’re going to own it.” The last feature Rogers is excited about is a component that allows clients to take lessons home with them. “We just had an app built for us by Microsoft and in partnership with the PGA Tour. The app allows us to take a video of a person, annotate the video with voice-over and then e-mail the person immediately so they can access it on the go.” Through March, Rogers is bringing one of his simulators back to the Bellevue Club. He says good fitness is just as important to the game as access to technology. “We are so happy to partner with the Bellevue Club because that brings about the fitness part,” he says. “The most important things in terms of fitness for golf are increased range of motion and overall awareness of how the body is moving during motion.” Aside from partnering with the Club, Rogers says there are some other exciting things coming down the pipeline. “I can’t talk about it in detail, but look for cool things to happen in entertainment and golf, specifically with indoor spaces. We’re focusing on how to enjoy the game in environments that aren’t typical golf courses.” • For more information, visit grgolfperformance.com. a discovery The PNW Is Bubbling Over with Fantastic Sparkling Wines w r itten by j ulie a r na n

40 | february 2017 reflections

BOTTLE TALK Some sparkling wines are made by adding carbonation to the nearly finished product, but méthode Champenoise refers to the traditional method of carbonation via a secondary fermentation in the bottle. When the fermentation is complete, the bottle is inverted so the remaining yeast (lees) and other sediment are trapped in the neck, which is then dipped in a freezing liquid. Once a frozen plug develops, the cap is removed and the lees literally shoot out of the bottle. A sugar mixture, known as the dosage, is added at this point to bring the wine to the desired sweetness level.

M

ost people associate sparkling wine with holidays and celebrations, but no day is too ordinary for a little bubbly. Champagne obviously wears the most sparkly crown—indeed, most sparkling wine was simply referred to as Champagne until the EU gratified the French with strict locale-label regulations. Hence, sparkling wine in Spain is called Cava, Prosecco in Italy and so forth. The myth surrounding the discovery of sparkling wine starts with the monk Dom Pérignon in the 1600s. The winemaker-monk had just finished fermenting a batch of wine, or so he thought due to an unseasonable cold snap in the region that put all of the yeast to sleep. He bottled the fermented wine, stashed it in his wine cave and took a long winter’s nap. When the weather warmed, it turned out the awakened yeast wasn’t yet finished eating its sugar snack and so began again in earnest, creating carbon dioxide as it gorged. The corked bottles prevented the CO2 from escaping, so the wine absorbed it as carbonation, and voilà: bubbly was born.

Sparkling wines range from dry to sweet (brut nature, extra brut, brut, extra dry/sec, dry/sec, demi-sec, doux). Traditional French Champagne is often made from aromatic cooler climate grapes like Pinot Noir and Chardonnay (Burgundy, Willamette Valley) leading to a lean, zesty experience. These are usually labeled brut nature, extra brut, or brut. Most Cava also falls into this category. Sparkling rosés and Prosecco utilize fruity, floral components in grapes like Pinot Grigio or other red grapes grown in warmer regions (Napa, Columbia Valley). They tend to be labeled brut and extra dry. Dry, demi-sec and doux sparkling wines are sweetened during the dosage step or sweet grapes like Muscat are used as the base (Asti Spumante, Dolce, etc.). Rich, creamy sparkling wines are made with a different method—sometimes fermented in oak barrels (imparts a nutty quality) and left on the lees for an extended period of time (creamy quality). This style is the most expensive method to produce and therefore to purchase. Look for vintage Champagne, Reserva and Gran Reserva Cava, American bubbles and Italian metodo classico. Washington and Oregon winemakers have stepped up to the sparkly plate in recent years, producing great bubbly in a variety of styles. A few wineries specialize in sparkling wines (and have purchased the specific equipment necessary), while other wineries have added one or two sparkling wines to its lineup (usually outsourcing the disgorgement element to a winery with the proper equipment).

WASHINGTON BUBBLE SPECIALISTS

TREVERI CELLARS: Perched on a hillside a few miles outside of Yakima, Treveri Cellars boasts both an impressive view and sparkling wine selection. Varieties range from an extra brut blanc de blancs (meaning white wine made from white grapes) to a very sweet sparkling Gewürtztaminer, all made using méthode Champenoise. Creative base wines like Riesling, Müller-Thurgau, and even a Syrah ensure customers do not lack for interesting options. Recommendations: NV Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs (Yakima Valley; $15) 100% Chardonnay—zero dosage on the extra brut means a dry, lean citrus zest on the palate; NV Syrah Brut (Yakima Valley; $20) 100% Syrah—festive red in color, light and refreshing with dark fruit undertones. KARMA VINEYARDS: This Chelan winery has so much to offer—still wines, great food, an inviting outdoor patio—but four méthode Champenoise–produced sparkling wines make Karma a bubbly specialist. Recommendation: 2011 Brut (Columbia Valley; $50) 56% Pinot Noir, 41% Chardonnay, 3% Pinot Meunier—dry and enticing with white flowers and mango fruit on the nose giving way to creamy tropical fruits on the palate.

OTHER WASHINGTON RECOMMENDATIONS

PATTERSON CELLARS: 2014 Sparkling Rosé of Pinot Noir (Columbia Gorge; $38)—freshly baked brioche bread pops on the nose followed by classic cherry and strawberry notes on the palate. SIGILLO CELLARS: 2015 Brut Viognier (Columbia Valley; $32)—warm bread on the nose followed by white peach and citrus on the palate, refreshing and crisp on the finish. MICHELLE SPARKLING WINE: NV Brut (Columbia Valley; $14)—perfectly balanced between dry and sweet with citrus and pineapple on the nose and creamy pear on the finish. OREGON BUBBLE SPECIALISTS

ARGYLE WINERY: Farming some of the Willamette Valley’s oldest vines, Argyle Winery is also one of the region’s first sparkling wine producers (since 1987!). Argyle produces high-end vineyard-specific still wines in addition to a lineup of eight méthode Champenoise sparkling wines. Expensive 2009 vintage bottles (up to $150) are balanced by several options under $50. Recommendations: 2013 Vintage Brut (Willamette Valley; $28) 60% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay—not overly sweet, but with honey and peach sensations balanced by a mineral edge on the mid-palate. 2012 Vintage Black Brut (Willamette Valley; $35) 100% Pinot Noir—strikingly elegant dark red color bearing red fruit and spice on the palate. KRAMER VINEYARDS: Family-owned and now in its second generation, Kramer Vineyards began making sparkling wines in 2001 from sustainably farmed fruit grown in the Yamhill-Carlton region of the Willamette Valley. Kramer sparkling wines are force carbonated. The vintage Brut is accompanied by three sparkling wines in its Celebrate series featuring wines made from Müller-Thurgau, Pinot Gris and a rosé of Pinot Noir. Recommendation: 2014 Celebrate Müller-Thurgau (Yamhill-Carlton; $22)—tropical fruits along with orange blossom and apricot with a hint of Asian pear. OTHER OREGON RECOMMENDATIONS

EVOLUTION BY SOKOL BLOSSER: NV Brut (AVA not available; $20)—vibrant and dry, green apple and pear aromas are followed by a slightly creamy citrus finish. SOTER VINEYARDS: 2011 Mineral Springs Brut Rosé (Yamhill-Carlton; $65) 90% Pinot Noir, 10% Chardonnay—a slightly salmon rosy color, this rosé is pleasantly dry with just a hint of sweetness. Cherry and cranberry aromas lead to a creamy texture that finally gives way to a dry finish bright with acid.

THE FACE OF GABRIEL BELLEVUE CLUB MEMBER GABRIEL DE SANTINO IS THE PRESIDENT AND CEO OF GABRIEL COSMETICS, INC., AN INTERNATIONAL MAKEUP AND SKIN CARE COMPANY THAT HOLDS ITS NATURAL INGREDIENTS ABOVE ALL ELSE. HE SAYS KEEPING TRUE TO HIS PACIFIC NORTHWEST ROOTS WAS CRITICAL TO HIS SUCCESS, AND HERE'S THE STORY OF WHY. Reflections magazine: How did you get interested in the beauty industry? Gabriel De Santino: Growing up, my grandmother lived by the ocean in Mexico, and it was so therapeutic going outside and breathing the ocean air. There are so many natural ingredients found in the sea that are healthy alternatives to traditional medicine. When I moved to Washington in 1986, I decided I wanted to do something to continue grandmother’s tradition with clean products. RM: She made beauty products from things in the ocean? GDS: She did. She compounded them herself. I remember helping her gather seaweed from the beach, and then she would do whatever she did. Back in the day, they weren’t called naturopaths, they were called witch doctors. So she was the village witch doctor, and people would always come over and pick up their jars of tonics and tinctures. To me it was fascinating growing up with that. It became a lifestyle, and basically that’s what it still comes down to today—creating a healthy lifestyle.

MEMBER PROFILE bellevue club february 2017 | 45

RM: How did you get into the beauty industry professionally? GDS: I always wanted to work with skin. I really enjoy it. A friend and I opened up a hair salon where I was in charge of the skin department, and I was having a hard time finding an aesthetician that had the same values as I did. So at the end of the day, I decided to go to school myself to get my license from the Euro Institute of Skin Care. I started working with customers and helping them treat their skin problems—everything from dry skin to eczema and acne and everything in between. I’m very hands-on, and I’d give customers products to take home and give me feedback.

PARADISE PLUM

PINK LADY

RM: And how did makeup become a part of the equation? GDS: After working with customers, they really liked that the ingredients were clean and pure, and they would ask if I offered makeup. I started thinking that would fill the void or complete the circle, and I started working on developing a makeup line. I wanted to replace harsh allergens with healthy ingredients.

"I’VE BEEN THINKING ABOUT SKIN AND HOW BEST TO TAKE CARE OF IT FOR YEARS." RM: What are the most common harmful ingredients found in beauty products? GDS: Coal tar derivatives, FD&C coloring agents, mineral oil, anything toxic. If it has more than four syllables, it’s not good for you. Following that philosophy, our products are non-GMO, some are certified USDA organic, others are gluten-free vegan. And we never test on animals, just my sisters. I have five sisters. RM: Are they officially part of the business too? GDS: One of them is. The others are doing their own thing. RM: How did you launch your products? GDS: Because our customers live a healthy lifestyle, I had the idea to sell products in health food stores. I thought about it and decided to reach out to a local health food store, PCC, and they loved the concept, philosophy and the idea that I was local. They brought us into their stores, but what I didn’t know at the time was they were the largest co-op in the country. So other co-ops came to shop in PCC because they have high standards. That was 25 years ago. 46 | february 2017 reflections

RM: Do you feel like the makeup line filled the hole you were talking about? GDS: Absolutely, because I really believe you have to think about the whole deal. For example, I have customers who are buying $75 bottles of supplements, but are using mass-market cosmetics. Their skin is breaking out and they don’t know why. So a lot of my job is education. Whatever we put onto our skin is absorbed into it, so education is so important. I’ve been thinking about skin and how best to take care of it for years. Other companies are now heading in that direction, they’ve finally caught on to natural cosmetics. RM: How do you go about designing a new line of makeup? How do you pick and create trends? GDS: I go to a lot of fashion shows, and I travel quite a bit abroad. That’s how I get a feel for what is going to be on trend, but it’s hard to predict the future. You’re working so far in advance. RM: Are there specific cities that you find yourself repeatedly going to for inspiration? GDS: Paris and London. I love sitting in Heathrow airport. There’s always so much going on, so much color in every sense of the word.

RM: Can you share your own personal skin care regime? GDS: I get up between 5:45 and 6 a.m. and wash my face with our Red Seaweed Purifying Gel Cleanser. Then I follow it with the Red Purifying Seaweed Tonic, which is a spray to balance the PH. I finish with the Marine Red Seaweed Moisturizer (I use it day and night). Oh, and the Marine Anti-aging Eye Cream. People think they can use regular moisturizer around the eyes. If it doesn’t say eye cream, don’t put it around your eye. Also twice a week I use the Sea Clarifying Mask to absorb all the toxins out of my skin, and keep it looking polished and healthy.

s ui t e r e s ta ur a un t & lo un g e

RM: How much does diet play a part of your skin care? GDS: I think nutrition is 95, 96, 97 percent of all wellness. I have a super clean diet, almost vegan, but not quite there. I drink a green shake every morning that I make with flax seed, tons of green leafy vegetables, beets and anything I find locally produced. I like to make my own food so I know exactly what I’m putting in my body. Again, it’s more of a lifestyle than a diet. RM: Do you feel the same about a good work out routine? GDS: I call my workout my daily vacation. I’m really able to mentally detox and think about nothing. Just really focus on the moment and getting it done. Working out helps a lot. I do 45 minutes of cardio at the gym, and then shower up and get ready for work. I also see my trainer in the afternoon, five days a week. If there’s time, I like to do power hot yoga two or three times a week, and that helps to cleanse the skin of toxins. And I drink a lot of water too. It helps to lubricate all the vital organs and flush everything out. RM: What is trending for spring? GDS: There is a fine line between trends and fads. This year we released the Techno Warrior color palettes for spring. It’s for daring women and focuses on the eyes, with a slightly warmer terra cotta check and lip. RM: Who is your beauty icon? GDS: I like classics like Sophia Loren; I really like old Hollywood. But I also think our customers fit that role. They are confident, and they are who they are. That to me is a trend-setting person and icon. And my mother too. She likes to help the community, which I get from her. I also adore my godmother who is 89. She’s always ready for a good time.

BEAUTY FEATURE BELLEVUE CLUB BARRE INSTRUCTORS: MARYANN CARPENTER, NANCY BLACK AND KAREN SWIFT.

bellevue club february 2017 | 51

BARRE

classes take place in a studio and incorporate fundamental ballet positions into a fun, effective workout to pump up your posterior. Bellevue Club instructor Nancy Black explains that the class uses first position, plié and relevé—basic ballet moves—with an easy-to-follow, modern twist that makes it accessible to everyone. “I don’t use that jargon too much,” she says. A typical class begins with a 10-minute warm-up session—usually some cardio to get your blood pumping. Then it moves to a 10 to 15-minute arm workout. This brief arm workout can involve light weights, exercise bands or your own body weight to strengthen and tone arms and core. Next, the class moves to the barre for the rest of the hour-long session. One of the benefits exclusive to Barre exercises is the focus on deep stabilizing muscles in the glutes, external rotators, core and legs. This improves balance from the inside out and exercises these oftenneglected muscles. The class concludes with a quick abdominal workout on mats.

52 | february 2017 reflections

As a whole, the class requires mind-body connection. “There are a lot of Pilates components to it, including concentration, control, precision, flow, centering and breath,” Black explains. “So you’re focusing on all of that at the same time. It’s very mindful.” Participants often note increased muscular endurance, flexibility, muscle tone, balance and cardiovascular health. Instructors lead their classes differently, but with a plethora of activities to select, these benefits are universal for barre classes. Even those without full ability to exercise due to injury, or even pregnancy, can join. Black elucidates that most exercises are modifiable to accommodate physical constraints.

BARRE If you take a class, you’ll probably hear the following terms: PLIÉ The French term meaning to fold. In the case of Barre, it refers to the knees, encouraging a squat-like action with the legs while the toes are turned out. RELEVÉ Meaning to raise, a relevé is a lifting of the heels, fully engaging the legs. TUCK A slight tilt of the pelvis to remove the arch of the back and fully engage the abdominals and thighs. FIRST POSITION A fundamental posture, first position is when the heels are together and the feet are turned out as wide as possible. SECOND POSITION Similar to first position, second position is a stance in which the toes are pointed out and heels turned in. However, the feet are about six inches apart.

BARRE-BASED WORKOUTS The Bellevue Club offers a few variations of barre-based classes, including Booty Barre, Booty Barre Sculpt, BBarreless and Barre Tighten and Tone. To see specific times and instructors, check a current GPX schedule.

glamour on the go w r itten by h a ley sh a pley

Unless your entire bathroom fits into a carry-on, a trip away from home means leaving your practiced daily beauty routine behind. Fear not — you can look and feel good on the road with these beauty tips and tricks for travelers. THE BASICS

Before diving into specifics, there are broad beauty and grooming tips everyone should know before heading out the door. Whether you’re going by train, plane, car, bike, bus, motorcycle or boat, these tips are essential. • Pack light. For a stress-free trip, think small and simple as you gear up. Now is the perfect time to use those sample-sized products you’ve saved from subscription boxes or beauty store gifts. • Pack less. One way to keep your packing list at a minimum is by bringing products that have multiple uses, like a cream blush that doubles as lip tint. • Dress smart. Temperatures may fluctuate as you travel, especially if you’re traveling somewhere with a different climate. Wear layers so you can peel one off if you’re warm or add another if you’re chilly. Loose-fitting clothing is optimal to keep your circulation going strong on long trips. And make sure to keep your travel outfit comfy — it will enhance your beauty sleep! • Get some sleep. Planes, trains, and automobiles aren’t always the most comfortable makeshift beds, but getting your rest is essential for looking your best. Pack a travel pillow and a lightweight blanket (better yet, add a blanket scarf to your layered travel outfit) and catch some zzz’s in transit. • Keep your blood flowing. Take a few minutes every hour to get up and move in order to refresh your body and get a healthy glow. Walk, stretch, do lunges — whatever it takes to get that blood pumping. If you don’t have the option to move much, try stretching and flexing your legs in your seat to boost circulation.

T R AV E L F E AT U R E HAIR CARE

Changing humidity levels, long hours without washing, cat-nap-fueled flatness—all these things may cause your hair to rebel when traveling. But even when exposed to the elements of travel, your hair can be happy. • Long trips are a perfect time to pamper your locks. Apply a hair mask before your trip, then hop in the shower to wash and rinse your hair when you arrive at your destination. • Hair styling tools like straighteners and curling irons take up valuable space in your luggage. Use this opportunity to give your hair a break from the treachery styling can bring and go natural while on your trip. Alternatively, get a volume-boosting blowout before you leave, keeping your hair chic for days.

bellevue club february 2017 | 57

SKIN SAVERS

Your skin needs more attention than you think. Traveling often means sitting in an air-conditioned car or a high-altitude airplane cabin. Both situations mean dry air, which wreaks havoc on skin. Here’s how you can beat travel dryness to the punch. • Stay extra hydrated. Drink lots of water and apply a deep moisturizing cream the night before you travel. Use a moisturizer often, and if your skin feels overloaded with lotion, try a misting spray to keep moisture locked in. If you can’t imagine going without foundation, which tends to dry out skin, try a tinted moisturizer with SPF to get the coverage you need. • Dehydration doesn’t only affect your face — your lips need attention, too. Avoid dry, cracked lips by keeping a medicated lip balm on you at all times to apply periodically in transit. To add color, try a moisturizing tinted lip balm or gloss. • Traveling can be exhausting. Apply cream blush to your cheeks to bring life back into your face and preserve a dewy appearance. Adding highlighter to your cheekbones will enhance your radiant look even more.

Whether you’re headed for a beach-bum vacation, a family reunion, or a business conference, your nails should never be ignored. After all, they tie your whole look together! Sadly, traveling can take quite the toll.

Blue Sky Cleaners

• Avoid noticeably chipped nails by choosing nude or dull polish colors rather than bright ones that stand out. Apply a clear topcoat after polishing to make your color last. After all, chipped nails are not a good look, and all that packing, repacking and lugging gear will surely give your nails a beating.

• Who knows when you’ll break a nail? Keep a travel kit filled with nail clippers, a small file, and cuticle scissors on hand to touch up your nails as needed.

BRIGHT EYES

Did you use your travel time to catch up on your favorite TV series or that novel you’ve been meaning to read? Maybe your sleep schedule got distorted because of time zone changes or night driving. In any case, your eyes will need some love on a long trip. • Long hours mean dry eyes. Keep them moist and avoid redness by bringing along eye drops—prescription or over-the-counter options both work well. Keep a bottle in your purse for easy access throughout your trip. • Skip the mascara and eye shadow while traveling. Eye makeup tends to move around after long periods of wear, especially after a snooze. Arriving at your destination with smudges on your face just means more work—and face-washing—for you.

e sold this house in 2 days for $1,525,000—

7% above the listing price. The buyer waived all contingencies and gave the seller a $75,000 non-refundable deposit as well as sufficient time to move out of the home. We met the client in May, did exterior shots in September and interior shots in January so the homeowner of 50 years could spend her last Christmas in the house. We take pride in ensuring that our clients have the best experience selling their house, especially when so many memories are associated with it. Let us help you sell your home.
