he idea that men and women inherently possess different strengths and weaknesses is nothing new. It has been written about and discussed since the beginning of time. It’s been the topic of best-selling books, award-winning albums and has even been played out in athletic arenas, with the most famous “battle of the sexes” match being between tennis players Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs. But lately, as people seem to be more interested in dissolving gender stereotypes rather than perpetuating them, I think the more engaging conversation is what the genders can learn from each other and where similarities exist, rather than an oversimplified compare and contrast exercise. That being said, as you read through our first ever Battle of the Sexes issue, you’ll notice that much of the content plays on the idea that men and women bring different things to the table. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty of crossover; the activities, ideas and stories inside this issue are for everyone. For example, check out our travel feature on Lake Chelan on page 48. The original idea was to present separate girls’ and guys’ trips. But, as it started to come together, we realized the concept was slightly problematic. After all, who doesn’t like wine tasting, water sports and BBQ? Instead, the result is a mix and match of options that will create a fun trip for anyone who wants to round up a group of friends and head east for the weekend. Similarly, our guide to Eastside single life, To Mingle or Not to Mingle?, on page 26 is packed with ideas that are great for a night out on the town—whether you’re with your girlfriends, a bunch of boys or, even better, a combination of both. And, our member profile, True Grit, features Nick and Danielle Sorensen, a couple that exemplifies just how strong and healthy a family can be when the sexes come together to create an unshakeable family philosophy and way of life. So as you’re flipping through the pages, I encourage you to have fun with the concept and discover where your own crossover exists.

Why Play
TENNIS?
E
veryone who plays tennis has his or her own personal reason for doing so, but as the longtime tennis director for the Bellevue Club, I’ve come to understand that much of the enthusiasm for the sport boils down to a few core values. For starters, tennis is one of the few sports that you can play your entire life and enjoy with your friends and family year-round. Many other sports are too dangerous or demanding to play into your thirties or forties. Along those same lines, one of the most rewarding parts of my job is seeing new players (kids and adults) form an instant camaraderie with other players. It is amazing to watch how many new friendships are created as a result of playing tennis. Between functions, special events and league play at the Club, it is very easy to meet new people with the same interests. I also really enjoy the competitive aspect. Because of the organized leagues, the Bellevue Club accommodates players of all levels. Seasoned players can advance to sectionals, regionals and nationals, and it can be very exciting! I have watched and been a part of this excitement for many years. How fun is it to go to Hawaii or Palm Springs with your team for nationals? But no matter your level, tennis will challenge you. Because it is a highly technical sport, it is both mentally and physically challenging—and even very frustrating at times. There is always something new to learn and something to work on. Just remember, the more you play, the better you get and the more enjoyable the game becomes. Lastly, and probably one of the main reasons why people play, tennis is excellent exercise and will improve your overall fitness level. In the new world of always improving technology, many people track their activity and exercise daily. I see people use tracking devices on the courts all the time. I only know of the Fitbit (no, this is not an advertisement), but I am a big fan. Get a tracking device and get on the court. If your fitness goal is to walk 10,000 or 15,000 steps per day, you will find that tennis is a great way to accomplish this and have fun! Bottom line: Challenge yourself mentally and physically, make new friends, get fit, and, most importantly, have fun!

SAUTÉED BABY SUMMER SQUASH
with Squash Blossoms, Mint, Marcona Almonds and Feta It’s July, and summer is finally starting to hit! We love baby summer squash here at the Club, and with the addition of the lightly sautéed squash blossoms, you can achieve a more dynamic squash dish. It’s a great upscale Fourth of July party side dish. Visually stunning, it also has great texture contrast and vibrant, unique flavors. Squash blossoms (which come in many varietals) are underappreciated summertime jewels. If you see them at your local farmers’ market, be sure to scoop some up and use them within a day or two (they don’t last long). Also, make sure to pluck out the stamen. It is a tricky task but will leave a slightly bitter flavor if not removed. We also like to stuff them with goat cheese or crab and then tempura-fry them.
INGREDIENTS
METHOD
2 tablespoons olive oil 1 tablespoon unsalted butter 10 baby pattypan squash, sliced in quarters lengthwise 10 baby zucchini, sliced in half lengthwise ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes ½ tablespoon kosher salt 1 teaspoon ground black pepper 3 tablespoons Marcona almonds, roasted and roughly chopped 10 squash blossoms, long stem trimmed to half an inch, cut in half, stamen removed 2 tablespoons fresh mint, chopped ½ teaspoon lemon juice, freshly squeezed ¼ cup feta cheese, crumbled
In a large sauté pan, over medium heat, add the oil and butter. When the oil and butter are hot, add the zucchini and pattypan squash. Sauté the vegetables for seven to eight minutes, tossing them frequently. The squash should get slightly colored around the edges.
18 | july 2014 reflections
Now add the red pepper flakes, salt and pepper. Toss a few times more. Add the chopped Marcona almonds, squash blossoms and one tablespoon of mint. Toss a few more times, ensuring the blossoms are just slightly wilted. Add the lemon juice, toss and then transfer to a nice serving platter. Garnish with the crumbled feta and remaining mint. Serve immediately.

by
s a m a n th a stor z
Harness up and fly from branch to branch at the Bellevue Zip Tour. Instead of strolling through the trees this summer, try swinging. Located in Eastgate Park, the Bellevue Zip Tour is made up of ropes strung through the old maple and Douglas fir forest. The park is a convenient 10 minutes away from the Bellevue Club, although from the tree-tops, adventure seekers will feel like they have embarked on a real jungle safari. The course includes seven zip lines and two bridges, with lines measuring up to 600 feet long and reaching 80 feet off the ground. Rest in the boughs of a Big Leaf Maple Tree and take in calming views of Mt. Baker and Glacier Peak. Channel Tarzan and Jane for a fun date night option. Tour rates are $69 for adults and $44 for youth.

Literature and Libations
Bookworms, meet your people. Slip into the SORRENTO HOTEL’S cozy Fireside Room on the first Wednesday of every month for the one and only SILENT READING PARTY. Seriously. When the clock strikes at 6 p.m., literary lovers come out of the woodwork to grab a drink and open a book in the company of others who enjoy reading. While supposedly not a social event, it’s decidedly difficult not to strike up a conversation with the cute brunette reading Murakami (hotelsorrento.com).
Climb Every Mountain
Want sexy arms? Climb some rocks. STONE GARDENS’ Eastside satellite promises plenty of challenge and sculpting potential. Inexperienced ladies might consider the Women’s Intro to Climbing class on the third Friday of every month from 7 to 9 p.m. Others can opt for the traditional Climbing 101 series, the fee for which includes a two-week membership and 10% gear discount (stonegardens.com/bellevue/ default.aspx).
Mad Skates, Bro
Drop by Bellevue’s SKATE KING from 8:30 to 11 p.m. on Thursday for Adult Night, full of disco balls and groovy tunes ( bellevueskateking.homestead.com). Those who prefer tipsy skating should head farther south to the legendary SOUTHGATE ROLLER RINK, open for more than 70 years! Four-wheelers of drinking age adore the hip-hop-and-funk-filled Adult Nights on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 to 11 p.m. and rage late on Saturdays from 10 to 12:30 a.m. (southgaterollerrink.com).

While it certainly helps to have some body strength and flexibility going into the class, beginners can try it out at OmCulture’s Intro to AcroYoga drop-in class on Tuesdays from 7 to 8 p.m. To watch the experts, hang around afterward for the Acro Jam, which rages until 10:30 p.m. and is free for anyone who takes the intro class (seattleacro.com).
Van Gogh Was Single Too
Nurture your creative passions and give voice to your fantasies with an evening series at GAGE ACADEMY OF ART. Amateur artists can select from classes in varying levels of drawing, painting and sculpting, or simply drop in for a special weekend workshop like “Mixed-Media Life-Size Figure Painting” or “Botanical in Watercolor: Painting the Produce Section” (gageacademy.org).

Meetup Mélange
The Internet is your wingman (or wingwoman) when it comes to finding a source of enriching and simply goofy fun. Simply look to MEETUP.COM, which houses groups of locals who share nearly every conceivable interest. Take for instance the “Seattle Dungeons and Dragons” Meetup group, which offers regular role-playing get togethers throughout the Puget Sound area. For the outdoorsy and young at heart, the “Capitol Hill Sports” group just may be the ticket, which promises to “bring recess back” with revered pastimes like red rover, kickball, capture the flag, tug of war and more. If, on the other hand, you crave deep conversation with people of substance (and beer), look no further than “Drunken Philosophy,” a group dedicated to thinking and drinking (meetup.com).

UE GRIT Meet the Sorensen family, where working hard is a way of life.
bellevue club july 2014 | 33
"Valuing hard work, determination and grit is very important to us."
34 | july 2014 reflections
Consider this a disclaimer: Nick and Danielle Sorensen do not claim to have a perfect family or flawless parenting skills. They would never say they know what is best or right when it comes to keeping a family balanced, happy and healthy, or claim (for even for a second) that trying to do so is easy.
What they do say is they seem to have found something that works for them—and that’s for everyone in the family to have a healthy amount of grit. “Valuing hard work, determination and grit is very important to us,” Danielle says. “That sense of work and grit, that’s what we want our kids to have,” Nick says of their two boys, Stone, 3, and Nash, 2. “We want them to be good people, have a good work ethic, and have that grit to be able to overcome things.”
bellevue club july 2014 | 35
36 | july 2014 reflections
The couple says people are often quick to assume that this outlook was born solely from Nick’s career in the NFL. Currently, he is a special teams assistant coach for the Seattle Seahawks and joined the staff in 2013. Prior to that he was a player for the St. Louis Rams, the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Cleveland Browns. But, that’s only one thread in the fabric that makes up their unique philosophy. Danielle says she developed her sense of grit through academics, which led her to a career in health care. “I was never the smartest kid in class,” she says. “But I worked as hard as possible to get the results I was looking for.” And also through the art of ballet. “I didn't have the best feet, and I didn't have the best turnout. But if the doors to the studio were unlocked, I was there.” “Yeah, we both have that mentality of, ‘You’re not going to outwork me,’ ” Nick says.
Danielle and Nick agree physical activity and athletics are naturally a great setting to start instilling these values in the boys, while keeping them healthy at the same time. So they expose them to many different activities, including soccer, swimming, T-ball and more, many of which they do at the Club. But ultimately, they know that what the boys learn from swinging a bat or shooting a basketball will carry into anything they do. “I would be just as happy to see Stone finish a piano recital; it’s all about the hard work,” Nick says. “Being a football guy, I always said I wouldn’t push that on them. They may be good at karate; they may be good at piano. You never know. We’re going to let them see everything, and let them figure it out.”

“The overlying idea for us is that the harder choice is usually the right choice."
However, as hard as the couple works to make sure their boys develop a healthy sense that “things aren’t always going to come easy,” they work equally as hard to hold themselves up to the same standards. “The overlying idea for us is that the harder choice is usually the right choice; finding a way to spend more time with the kids isn’t always easy. Danielle researches food, does the shopping and cooking, and that’s harder,” Nick says. “There’s not one trick; just do what’s harder; try to be more selfless and take that tougher, sacrificial route.”
bellevue club july 2014 | 39
"It's just about knowing in your heart you're doing what's best for you and your kid."
For Danielle, this translates into spending a lot of her extra time and energy researching and preparing clean, healthy food for the whole family (“Our kids are gluten-free, dairy-free, no reduced corn syrup and no genetically modified foods,” she says.) as well as juggling everyone’s jam-packed activity schedules. “Parenting isn’t easy and you’re not always going to be their favorite person, especially with the eating,” Danielle says. “But it’s just about knowing in your heart you’re doing what’s best for you and your kid.” Leading by example also means, among other things, they both maintain their own fitness regimes, vow to get outside with the boys on a daily basis, and do just about anything else it takes to keep their kids gritty. “Step outside your comfort zone, for yourself and your kids,” Danielle says. “Because you just don’t know; you never know what you or your kids might like?” 40 | july 2014 reflections

DRESSING FOR THE FIVE BASIC BODY TYPES Dressing for your body type is important year round. But during the summer months, when hemlines get shorter, jackets come off and more skin is exposed, it’s imperative to take a look at your closet and make sure it is helping your image, not hurting it. Style expert and founder of Michael Bruce Image Consulting, Bruce Pflaumer, breaks down the five different body types— for both men and women—and how to dress them for any summer soiree.

STYLE GUIDE
BODY TYPE
NO. 1

#
straight DEFINING CHARACTERISTICS: Rectangle shape, flat chest, little to no curves, skinny frame, usually long legs with short torso
Season Must-Have
The white dress is essential this summer. Whether your style is a retro fit and flare, vintage-feeling eyelet, structured sheath or sassy shift dress, the key to wearing a white dress is to add a statement piece of jewelry to add color, depth and interest.
Key to Dressing This Body Type: Create definition by thinking about “going up and in,” meaning garments should be worn close to the body. Avoid baggy or loosefitting clothes. Tips for Women: Always look for “slim fit” shirts, pants and jackets to add structure. Incorporate horizontal stripes, pops of color and texture. Look for athletic-inspired clothing, which is trending for the summer. Ankle pants with pointy flats are also a great option. Tips for Men: Men should also look for “slim fit” garments to give them structure. Subtle plaids and patterns work well for this body type, layered with a structured jacket.

soft oval
DEFINING CHARACTERISTICS: Oval shape, rounded upper body and lower body
Key to Dressing This Body Type: Create interest, balance and structure. Stay away from untucked shirts and pants that are too long. Both of these add volume. Also avoid big patterns. Tips for Women: Garments that ruche, gather and drape around the waist are great for a woman with this body type; these elements draw the eye down and add interest. Add different lengths, such as a shorter jacket and longer top. Avoid lowcut shirts, such as V-necks. Micropleated skirts also work well. Tips for Men: Men with this body type should look for stretchy cotton materials that move but still retain some structure for a casual option. The biggest challenge for these men is fitting the chest and stomach, so address that first when putting together a look, especially a suit.
44 | july 2014 reflections
Season Must-Have
Every woman and almost any body type can wear a denim jacket. Choose from a medium washed distressed jacket or a darker dressy denim jacket. Both are important, but if you have to choose, go with the medium washed distressed denim. It's better for daytime.

hourglass & athletic
DEFINING CHARACTERISTICS: Hourglass body types have big bust and hip areas, with smaller waists. Athletic men are characterized with broad shoulders, a small waist, a large rear end and thighs.
Key to Dressing This Body Type: For the most part, these body types can wear almost anything, but they should stay away from extremes (too tight or too lose). Tips for Women: For this body type, light colors on the top make the hips appear broader; stick with dark colors that keep everything in proportion. These women should also pay special attention to skirt lengths; both too short and too long, again, will distort proportions. Mid to high heels work well. Tips for Men: While shirts and jackets that are too tight do not flatter this body type, a properly fitted shirt is key to dressing these men. The best option is to buy a shirt or jacket that fits the shoulders, and have a tailor take in the sides. A trick to buying pants is to get slim fit pants one size larger.
Bruce’s Pflaumer’s Fashion Pet Peeves Wearing Spandex clothing outside of the gym or house, especially when women wear black bottoms like they are dress pants; it’s not good. I don't care how comfortable they are.
Get rid of the “Northwest colors.” These include washed out colors like sage green, dusty mauve and drab washed out blue. I don't think those colors look good on anyone.
Men who wear khaki pants for dress occasions. Khaki is a work and casual fabric, and light colored bottoms are for casual, not dress, events. Along that same line, you shouldn't wear khaki at night either.
Guys, no more cargo shorts. It’s time to embrace the flat front short, regular or slim. A basic khaki is good, but try a chambray or something bright. For the more adventurous, wear a floral or microprint.

inverted
DEFINING CHARACTERISTICS: Barrel-like upper body (broad shoulders and midsection), skinny legs
Key to Dressing This Body Type: Wear garments that draw the eye down, accentuating the lower half. Blazers are tough for this body type; it’s a good idea to invest in getting one made. It’s important that every piece of clothing worn is working to create balance. Tips for Women: Because legs are often a great asset for this body type, these women can wear short skirts with high heels, skinny pants or boot-cut jeans. Short jackets paired with long shirts are a great option to help create balance as well as wrap dresses. Avoid crew, boat and V-neck shirts. Tips for Men: These men should steer clear of relaxed fit jeans, which give added fullness to the overall look. Opt for a more flattering bootcut jean. Also avoid untucked shirts, as they add bulk rather than slim. Stick with tonal pairings (i.e. dark denim with a black top or khakis with white).

Season Must-Have
The blazer is an all-important piece for summer, whether it's linen, textured cotton or a dress satin finish. Wear it with denim or colored chino pants, finished off with a dress shirt, patterned buttoned shirt, or keep things crisp and simple with a white shirt. Blazers can be worn with or without a tie. If you feel a little incomplete, wear a pocket square. This adds a little interest and hint of sophistication to your overall look.

Season Must-Have
Metallic is the new neutral. Wear something shiny with white, khaki or shades of grey. Try wearing a rich gold, stylish silver or sophisticated rose instead of black.

pear shape DEFINING CHARACTERISTICS: Narrow shoulders, full legs and rear end
Key to Dressing This Body Type: Like many other body types, the key to dressing this body type is to create balance. Dressing in tonal pairings (i.e. dark denim with a black top or khakis with white) with a pop of color is a great way to achieve this. Tips for Women: A-line skirts are great for this body type and pair well with heels. Long cardigans and shirts (anything that fits below the waist) also help to elongate the torso and create balance and length. Vertical stripes also usually work on this body type. Tips for Men: There are not too many men with this body type, but there are some. These men should focus on creating structure for the shoulders. Tailored jackets are a great way to do so.

LAKE CHELAN GUYS’ VS. GIRLS’ WEEKEND There’s something for everyone in the area surrounding the country’s third deepest lake Whether you want a weekend with the boys or a girls’ getaway, Lake Chelan offers summertime treats far beyond just ample sunshine and sparkling blue water—although there is plenty of that, of course. Gather up your closest guy friends or gal pals and head east for abundant outdoor recreation, charming shopping districts, fun tasting rooms and much more. Mix and match the suggestions below, or choose to chart your own course. FRIDAY ALL: Check in to your accommodations. The Lake Chelan area boasts a variety of house rentals, condos, hotels and cabins—visit lakechelan.com/where-to-stay for ideas on the best sleeping spots for your group.

GUYS: You’ll be hungry (and thirsty) by the time you arrive. Take care of both—and the need to relax after a car ride—at Lake Chelan Winery. Summer brings along with it BBQ in the Vineyard, a relaxing afternoon and evening of homemade barbecue (think baby back ribs, smoked turkey legs and cornbread) with an accompanying glass of wine. GIRLS: Stop by Firehouse 5 in Manson for a wine slushy—a delicious blend of wine and fresh fruit. After, decompress at The Vogue, a laid-back coffeehouse/wine bar that features live music from local talent on the weekends.

SATURDAY ALL: All aboard Lady of the Lake’s Lady Express for an excursion to Stehekin, a small community with about 80 residents. Before you go, you might wonder why anyone would choose to live somewhere so remote that it can only be accessed by ferry, floatplane, or hiking over mountains (to get groceries, residents send a blank check and a list to a store in Chelan), but one look at the beauty of the area will put that curiosity to rest. 50 | july 2014 reflections
If you’re just staying for the day, you’ll have three hours to explore (from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.) before you have to catch the Lady of the Lake II back. Get the Day Tripper Special from Discovery Bikes and two-wheel your way around for three hours, being sure not to miss Rainbow Falls, the one-room schoolhouse, and the Stehekin Pastry Company, renowned for its giant cinnamon rolls.

GIRLS: Have a nice meal at Sorrento’s Ristorante, part of Tsillan Cellars, where the views are fantastic, with service to match. Nosh on Italian dishes like Gnocchi Pomodoro, Chicken Marsala and Clams Italiano, which all pair beautifully with one of the wines from the tasting room next door. SUNDAY GUYS: Wake up by hitting the links at the all-new (opening in early August) Gamble Sands in Brewster. The highly anticipated course was designed by Scottish architect David McLay Kidd, whose résumé also includes Bandon Dunes in Oregon. The back-to-basics layout doesn’t offer any bells and whistles—just wide fairways, a stunning setting and the game of golf at its purest. On your way home, swing by the Lakeview Drive In, a local institution since 1957. A burger with a view, cherry milkshake and bucket of legendary crinkle-cut fries with special seasoning will give you the sustenance you need to make the drive back. For a souvenir, buy a bottle of Mack’s Seasoning Salt to remember the trip by—you can use it on French fries, chicken, onion rings, salads, popcorn and more.
TSILLAN CELLARS
GIRLS: By Sunday, you’ll be hooked on the fresh produce from this part of the state. So this morning, drop in at Blueberry Hills in Manson, where you can accomplish two goals in one trip: picking your own blueberries, raspberries and strawberries at the u-pick farm, and having a filling breakfast. With options such as Coconut Créme Waffles and The Best Eggs Benedict Known to Mankind, choosing what to order isn’t easy, but pushing through the decision-making process is worth it. After a bit of shopping in downtown Chelan (there are lots of options along Woodin Avenue), grab a leisurely lunch of gluten-free crepes at Bear Foods Natural Market & Café Creperie. Don’t forget to pick up some artisan, organic chocolate for the car ride home. ALL: Discuss plans to make this a yearly affair!

GETTING TO THE CORE OF
PILATES Nancy Black spends a large majority of her time thinking about Pilates. She relies on the method to train her own body, practicing up to three times a week. And she spends countless hours and days teaching classes to others. But it’s when she’s climbing a steep mountain on her bike that she really reaps the rewards of the method. “I really like the climb. I like to breathe hard and sweat,” says Black, a Bellevue Club Pilates instructor. “So it’s really cool to be out on the mountain bike, and when your legs are getting really fatigued, you can plug into your core and you can just go. That’s where you can really see the benefits of Pilates.” Black, a Mercer Island native with a degree in kinesiology from the University of Washington, says the same goes for running, golfing, skiing, playing tennis and just about every other sport or activity imaginable. “Pilates is such an incredible base for core. It gives people amazing pelvic stability that helps with so many sports,” she says. Unfortunately, Black says because of Pilates’ reputation as a ballet or yoga-esque activity, many athletes and fitness buffs are quick to write it off. Experiencing the benefits firsthand, Black says she wishes more people, especially men (currently her classes are about 70 percent women, 30 percent men) realized how perfectly the Pilates method complements athletics.
“I think many men think it is too easy or is geared for women, but once they give it a try, they realize what a great overall body workout it is,” says Black. “I also think some men (and women, too) are stuck in the ‘boot camp’ mentality right now. Pilates is not boot camp; but it is a deep, thorough workout that works your muscles and your mind. And, the injury rate is much lower with Pilates than in a boot camp or cross fit situation.” Black explains that the system works so well because it creates integrity in the center of the body by using controlled movements. “You’re doing so many different core exercises, hitting the core over and over in different ways,” Black says. “It teaches people how to initiate movements from the core, so it saves their joints, specifically their back.” Because of this corrective and restorative effect, Pilates is often incorporated into rehabilitation training for injured athletes or injury prevention practices. But, Black says in reality, athletes, no matter their age, injury status or fitness level, will gain strength from the practice. “There are so many ways to make an exercise harder in Pilates and bring in more advanced movements,” she says. “It’s perfect for everyone, from an injured athlete to someone in tip-top shape.”

BODY | MIND july 2014 We all know men and women differ in more than one way. Many of those ways are hard to quantify or articulate; others, like those below, are clear as black and white.
WORK AND LEISURE TIME* Men spend about 10 HOURS more a week than women in paid work. But women even that out because they spend about SIX HOURS more than men doing household work, plus they spend about THREE ADDITIONAL HOURS taking care of the children, bringing the total work time to 45.6 HOURS per week for men and 45.2 hours for women. However, men spend more time than women—about five hours more a week—enjoying leisure activities such as watching TV, playing games and sports.
COLLEGE ENROLLMENT* Even though college enrollment rates among young people have risen in recent decades, a Pew Research Center analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data shows that females outpace males in college enrollment, especially among Hispanics and blacks. In 1994, 63% of recent female high school graduates and 61% of male recent high school graduates were enrolled in college in the fall following graduation. By 2012, the share of young women enrolled in college immediately after high school had increased to 71%, but it remained unchanged for young men at 61%.
