I COULD NOT BE MORE EXCITED TO INTRODUCE THE LINEUP OF ARTISTS FEATURED IN THIS ISSUE.

RE FLEC TIONS MAGAZINE VOLUME 35 ISSUE 1 BCreflections.com editor

Not only do they showcase the various shades of creative talent that reside within our community, but also, they stand collectively as a reminder that in its highest form art is about inspiring and doing good for others.

Lauren Hunsberger | 425.688.3162 art director

Bonnie Tankovich | 425.688.3194 graphic designer

Taryn Emerick | 425.688.3163

Candace Oliver (this month’s cover story) is a prime example. Throughout her life, she’s used many modalities and mediums to express herself. From modeling to blogging and cooking to styling, she has a knack for finding beauty around her and using it help others do the same. But, her freedom to do so didn’t always come easy. Learn about her struggle to feel comfortable in her own skin and why she’s now on a mission to empower other women on page 50. Similarly, the three women featured on page 56 prove that the world of fashion and design is far from a superficial one. These designers use their businesses to provide jobs for others around the world all while producing chic clothing and home goods products.

“TO ACHIEVE GREAT THINGS, WE MUST FIRST DREAM.” —COCO CHANEL

StrotherDerm.com

C

hildhood is magical — because no dream is out of reach. It truly is a time when anything and everything feels possible. As a little girl growing up in a tiny town in Carnation, I’d often imagine the kind of life I wanted when I grew up. The two things I knew is that I was an artist, and that uplifting other people made me happy. Like famed French fashion designer Coco Chanel — I set out to blaze my own path and it led to the perfect career for me: dermatology. I believe that the art of aesthetics comes from within my creative soul. I look at each client like a beautiful canvas and provide enhancement options that look natural — with the ultimate goal of helping restore confidence. Coco Chanel once said that if a woman dresses shabbily, they notice the dress. If she dresses impeccably, they notice the woman. I feel the same exact way about a woman in her own skin. And at Strother Dermatology in Kirkland, I have the opportunity to use my talents to make women feel their best — and then, they are unstoppable.

WASHINGTON SCHOOLS AWARDED PRESIDENT’S ENVIRONMENTAL YOUTH AWARD

From projects with bees to worms, two K-12 student groups in Washington were recognized for their environmental efforts. In recent years, there’s been a strong push to “go green” and find little ways to help care for our planet. At restaurants, diners are encouraged to use metal or paper straws, reusable shopping bags are now an accessory, and saving bees has become a hot-topic issue. But, as everyday people make small efforts to be more environmentally conscious, there are students across Washington who are working to make even bigger impacts. Broad View Elementary’s Green Club from Oak Harbor received the President’s Environmental Youth Award (PEYA) for grades K-5. In the grades 6-12 category, high school students from International Community School in Redmond/Sammamish were honorable mentions.

COOKING BOK CHOY

did you k now? Bok choy’s name was derived from the Chinese word for “soup spoon” because of its shape. Though its popularity began in China, northern European countries now grow most of the world’s bok choy because its climate supports growth year-round.

shopping , stor ing , pr epping Much like lettuce or cabbage (a close relative to bok choy), when shopping for this leafy green, follow similar rules. Choose the heads with the most vibrant colors and crisp leaves, avoiding anything that looks wilted.

Bok choy should be stored in a tightly wrapped plastic bag with as little air as possible. On average, if stored correctly, bok choy will last about five days in a refrigerator.

In China, it’s traditional to hang bok choy from clotheslines to dry because they say it concentrates the flavor.

BENEFITS OF BOK CHOY

• Prevents night blindness • Ranked among top energy-giving foods • Reduces risk of age-associated muscular degeneration • Rich in antioxidants • Strengthens bones • Assists in heart health • Cancerous cell–growth prevention • Assists in replacing old and damaged tissues • Rich in vitamins C, A and K

When you’re ready to eat the bok choy, start by giving it a rinse. Once clean, treat your bok choy like a head of celery, and start by removing the root end. As you begin to chop and cook, be sure to start with the stems and let them cook for a minute or two before adding the leafier parts because they will cook at different rates.

m a k e it ton igh t: bok choy & ginger st ir-f ry INGREDIENTS

1 pound bok choy 1 tablespoon coconut oil 2 cloves garlic 1 teaspoon grated ginger 1 tablespoon soy sauce Salt and pepper Toasted sesame seeds

20 | september 2019 reflections

DIRECTIONS

• Wash the bok choy and chop, separating the stems from the leaves. • Heat the oil in a large saucepan, and toss in the garlic and ginger. Cook until fragrant. • Add the bok choy stems, soy sauce and a splash of water. Cook for five minutes. • When the stems are tender, add the bok choy leaves and cook until wilted. • Season with salt, pepper and sesame seeds to taste. Recipe from cleananddelicious.com

MUSIC

GUITAR GREATNESS

bellevue club member al nesbitt returns to the stage

Guitarist and singer-songwriter Al Nesbitt has a storied music career. In the late ’90s and early aughts, he toured with country superstar Tim McGraw, played frontman in a few of his own bands and worked on music featured in national commercials for clients such as Nissan, Budweiser and more. After taking a break from the scene for few years, he is back in front of the mic, hitting stages all across the Pacific Northwest. “Playing music is such a wonderful outlet for me. I first picked up a guitar when I was 16 living in North Pole, Alaska. That was the best thing about the inclement weather—I had a lot of time indoors to play,” he says. “And I became obsessed.” Nesbitt was immediately drawn to Spanish guitar, flamenco, rock and classical music, and those styles inform most of his art today, although he also has an affinity for pop music. Currently, Nesbitt is working on an album of original songs inspired by recent travels abroad. He plans to release it on all major streaming services and begin touring the region.

22 | september 2019 reflections

Nesbitt is currently a regular at Eastside bars like Bake’s Place and plays corporate events, private parties and concerts. For more information, please visit alnesbitt.com.

KETTLEBELLS VS. DUMBBELLS

There are a few reasons to pick up kettlebells instead of dumbbells. Kettlebell circuits improve cardiovascular fitness and maximize strength through explosive movements. “I continue to rotate dumbbells into a workout, but should I need a quick, entire-body-conditioning circuit workout with strength-building aerobic intensity, I will grab the kettlebells,” Maryann says. CHOOSING THE RIGHT WEIGHT

With any movement, it’s vital to develop the skill first. Go light to moderate with the weight in the beginning. Do 8–15 reps, between one and four sets, and rest for 60–90 seconds. When conditioning, choose moderate to heavy weights, four to eight reps, two to five sets and, again, 60–90 seconds of rest. SUMO DEADLIFT HIGH PULL Start with your feet a little wider than hip width and toes pointed out slightly. Hold the kettlebell by the handle, and drop down into a wide-legged squat position. When returning to a standing position, raise the arms up to the chest with the elbows pointed out toward the sides at shoulder height.

COMMON MISTAKES

Using kettlebells with proper form takes practice. It’s not a good idea to start swinging a kettlebell without some knowledge of balance, agility, coordination, speed and, most of all, hip mobility and stability. Having a strong dumbbell routine is a good place to start. Kettlebells are a fun and challenging way to develop explosive strength once you are confident in your strength. FULL-BODY BENEFITS

Kettlebell workouts are full-body conditioning, functional strength building and connective tissue (fascia) strengthening. A good circuit will provide a range of benefits with a single tool.

KETTLEBELL BURPEES Start in a standing position, and hold the kettlebell with both hands by the handle. Place the kettlebell on the floor, and hop back, landing with the legs in a wide-legged plank position. Do a push-up with your hands pressing firmly into the handle. Jump back up and raise the kettlebell to the chest.

m in d & b ody As autumn saunters in and the leaves turn colors, it sends us a warm reminder to create this same palette in our diets. Color-rich foods are essential for shaping strong immune systems and often indicate high levels of antioxidants, essential vitamins and minerals. These phytonutrients work together to help your body ward off diseases, minimize preexisting conditions, prevent inflammation and build strong bones. Most often, these rainbow hues are found in fruits and vegetables, and for your next dinner masterpiece, we’ve created three recipes copious in color that we hope you’ll find complementary in both taste and tint. Enjoy!

RED AND GREEN KALE PESTO PIZZA Serves 5-6 INGREDIENTS Pesto 3 cups packed kale, stems removed 3 ounces fresh basil 3 peeled garlic cloves, roughly minced ¼ cup toasted walnuts ¼ cup shredded Parmesan cheese ½ cup olive oil 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice ¼ teaspoon salt, plus more Black pepper Pizza 1 bag Trader Joe’s Plain Pizza Dough ¼ cup pesto (see above) ½ red onion 1 tomato, cut into pieces Salt and pepper 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese ¼ cup Parmesan cheese PREPARATION • Preheat oven to 500 degrees Fahrenheit. Remove pizza dough from refrigerator, and follow package directions for preparing dough. • Cut the onion into strips and sauté over medium heat until caramelized, about eight minutes. Set aside. • Blanch the kale for one minute in a large pot before immediately submerging in ice water. Use paper towels to remove excess water, and then add the kale to a high-speed blender along with the basil, minced garlic, walnuts and Parmesan cheese. Pulse until mixed well. Add remaining pesto ingredients and blend until smooth. • On a flat surface, roll pizza dough into a 12-inch circle before transferring to a nonstick baking sheet covered with parchment paper. Spread an even layer of pesto on the dough and top with onions, mushrooms and tomatoes. Salt and pepper to taste before covering with mozzarella cheese and bake for 10 minutes. Remove from the oven and add Parmesan cheese. Continue baking until the cheese begins to brown and the bottom of the pizza is slightly golden, 4–5 minutes. Serve warm or cold as desired.

BLUE AND ORANGE COUSCOUS SALAD Serves 3-4 INGREDIENTS 16 ounces butternut squash, peeled and cubed 3½ tablespoons olive oil, divided ¾ pound halibut Salt and pepper 1 cup pearl couscous 1 lemon 1 cucumber, seeds removed 1 cup blue seedless grapes, quartered ½ cup chopped Italian parsley ½ cup chopped pecans PREPARATION • Preheat oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit, and prepare the vegetables. Toss the butternut squash in one tablespoon of olive oil and bake on a parchmentlined baking sheet until the sides are crisp, 30–35 minutes. • While the squash bakes, cover the halibut with half a tablespoon of olive oil, salt and pepper to taste and set in oven when 12–15 minutes remain for the squash. Bake the fish until pale white all the way through and then cool alongside the squash to room temperature. • In a medium saucepot, cook the couscous in one cup of water for the suggested time given. Note: Using equal parts water will ensure a dryer texture, which is ideal for this recipe. Then, stir the zest and juice of one lemon, two tablespoons of olive oil, salt and pepper together in a large bowl. Toss all the ingredients to combine. Adjust seasoning and chill. Serve cold. bellevue club september 2019 | 35

SPICY YELLOW CURRY WITH PURPLE RICE Serves 5-6 INGREDIENTS 1 cup jasmine rice 2 tablespoons black rice Curry 1 pound chicken thighs (or chicken breast), cut into ½-inch cubes 2 tablespoons coconut oil, divided 3–4 ounces yellow curry paste, divided 2 large carrots, peeled and cubed 1 small white onion, diced 1 red bell pepper, diced 1½ cup chicken stock 1 13.5-ounce can of condensed coconut milk, full fat 2 large Yukon gold potatoes, peeled and cubed 3 ounces Thai basil

36 | september 2019 reflections

PREPARATION • Cook rice in a rice cooker according to directions. Then, prepare all the ingredients for the curry as directed and set aside. • In a deep, nonstick sauté pan, mix the chicken with one tablespoon each of coconut oil and curry paste. Cook on medium heat until chicken is pale white in color and then transfer to a plate (about four minutes). Note: The chicken will still be raw at this point, but it will finish cooking later. • Add another tablespoon of coconut oil to the pan, and sauté the remaining curry paste on medium low for one minute. Some curry paste may stick to the bottom of the pan, but it will come off once the other ingredients are added. Toss in the carrots, onions and bell peppers and stir with a silicone spatula until all the vegetables are evenly coated. Cover and sauté for 8–10 minutes until the onions are translucent. • Then, add the chicken stock, coconut milk, potatoes and chicken. Cover and bring to a boil, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 25–30 minutes until the potatoes can be easily poked through with a fork. Serve warm over rice and top with fresh Thai basil.

earth meets exercise: plogging written

by

haley shapley

38 | september 2019 reflections

m in d & b ody

This environmentally minded Swedish fitness trend has spread through social media. For those who are equally concerned about their own health and the health of the planet, meet plogging— the Scandinavian fitness craze that’s gone international. A combination of the words jogging and plocka upp (“pick up” in Swedish), plogging involves picking up litter while you’re on a run. (There’s also plalking, for those who would rather take it at a more leisurely pace.) While many environmentally minded people have long picked up litter on an informal basis, plogging became an organized activity around 2016 in Sweden, thanks to environmentalist Erik Ahlström. After moving from a small ski community to Stockholm, he noticed the capital city was full of trash that didn’t belong. “The same debris could remain on the road for several weeks without anyone picking it up, so I started picking it up,” he told The Plastic Runner. “It felt good in the heart to clean up a small place.” The idea spread to the United States last year, largely through Instagram and Facebook, and now there are groups across the country dedicated to plogging.

THE EXERCISE BENEFITS Plogging takes jogging workouts to a new level. When you reach to pick something up, you bend your legs and now you’re in a squat. Focus on your form and using your legs to lower yourself, instead of bending at the back. You can also lunge to your next piece of litter, to work your quads and glutes. With a trash bag in one hand, you’ll add a new element to your balance while on the move. Be sure to alternate hands so that you work both sides of the body. If you really want to up the intensity, do bicep curls or tricep extensions with the bag in hand. Any extra movements should increase your overall caloric expenditure a bit above a traditional jog. Experienced runners are familiar with fartleks (another Swedish word!), a method of training that alternates hard, moderate and easy efforts. Unlike intervals, which involve defined time periods or distances, fartleks are unstructured. You might, for instance, decide to sprint until the next stop sign, then jog at a slow pace until you feel recovered enough to set another challenge. This is easily adaptable to plogging— try a slow jog while you’re looking for litter to grab, then sprint to a trash/recycling bin. If you tend to zone out while you run, plogging can bring your awareness back to your surroundings. You might even take in details about the sights and sounds around you that you’ve never noticed before. Plogging can also encourage you to shake up your routine and try a different route so you can bring your litterbusting skills to a wider area.

most common litter What are you most likely to pick up while plogging? According to Keep America Beautiful, a nonprofit dedicated to educating and inspiring people to improve their communities to be cleaner and greener, these are the five most-littered items:

HOW TO GET STARTED You can always plog solo, and many people do, without the fancy term. “It’s great that plogging is a trending word and people will think it’s Nordicly cool to pick up trash, but most trail runners and leave-no-trace believers have been practicing this already,” Seattle-based ultramarathon runner Margaret Young told Moneyish. “My pockets are usually stuffed with other people’s trash when I get home from a hike or run.” However, any extra attention for the cause of beautifying the planet isn’t a bad thing. Plus, getting together a group can make even more of an impact. If you want to join an already-planned gathering, many local businesses and organizations host events around Earth Day, but it’s also easy to put one together on your own.

CI GA R E T T E BU T TS • FO O D R E M N A N TS • FO O D W RA P P E R S • B EV E RAG E CA N S • N A P KI N S / TISSUES

Remember, you don’t have to pick up everything you find—if something is hazardous or unsafe to grab, leave it be.

You just need a route that tends to accumulate litter, along with gloves and bags for everyone. For an extra challenge, go plogging on a sandy beach—there’s often plenty of discarded debris there, unfortunately, and the uneven surface will add an extra challenge for your leg muscles. In the Pacific Northwest, we live in one of the most beautiful places—a little extra effort to keep it that way incorporated into your workout will leave both your mind and your body feeling better.

SIT AND SWEAT

HOW TO STAY HEALTHY WHEN YOU’RE INJURED For me, as a young athlete, injuries weren’t a foreign concept. My friends got concussions on the soccer field, broken fingers in baseball and on the courts, my teammates got tendonitis in their elbows and shoulders. In my senior year of college, I got my first “serious” and careerending injury: a completely torn ACL. At the time it was devastating, but I was in school still and remained a member of my team from the sidelines. I remember struggling through physical therapy, but with student athletes all around I still felt a sense of self and knew it was making me stronger.

Flash-forward to now. According to the National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health, athletes who have torn an ACL are 20–30 percent more likely to have a repeat injury. I never picked tennis back up after college; I decided to avoid becoming a statistic. Instead, I decided to take up an active lifestyle not rooted in competitive sports. I lift weights, jog with my dog, take cycling classes, regularly practice yoga and enjoy bouldering. Unfortunately, there’s no way to completely avoid injury if you’re an active person. Last month, 13 feet above the ground, I slipped while bouldering and landed on my other leg, tearing my remaining ACL and MCL. This injury is completely different: I still have to go to work each day, keep my house clean and cook dinner for my family. There isn’t a team of physical therapists trying to optimize my recovery, there are no teammates still urging me to go to the gym even just to sit, and most of all, the people I work with each day aren’t all recovering from their latest injuries. They’re going to happy hours and hikes. Getting an injury as an adult is a completely jarring and different reality than it was as a student-athlete. After a good week of wallowing in my slow-walking, ugly brace-wearing lifestyle, I decided to pick myself up and get some inspiration. Just because I was injured didn’t mean I couldn’t maintain my holistic health and wellness lifestyle. I worked with Bellevue Club instructor Morgan Zion to pinpoint the wellness goals I can maintain and even improve while healing. “As a collegiate soccer athlete, I had many injuries. My first big blow was a torn ACL, MCL and meniscus,” says Zion. “After a week of self-loathing, I picked myself up and mentally chose to become better because of it. I’ve followed these steps, and they’ve sustained me through every injury I’ve had.”

MENTAL WELLNESS: GIVE YOURSELF SOME LOVE

It’s amazing what positive affirmations can do for your mental health. Of course, an injury that takes you away from everyday activity is depressing, but staying positive, even if it feels fake at first, has its benefits. Positive affirmations have proved to reduce pain, increase vitality, improve immune function, improve cardiovascular health, reduce stress and lessen depression. I’ll be honest, it’s hard to get started, but here’s what I’ve been telling myself: First, you didn’t get injured by tripping on a crack. You are hurt because you maintain an active lifestyle and are always pushing yourself—this is a gift that not everyone has. Secondly, no, you can’t go on a hike tomorrow and you might miss a birthday party, but you are lucky enough to be given time to selfishly focus on yourself and your wellbeing, and that’s such a rare occurrence. Whether it’s a torn ACL, a sprained wrist or even taking a sick day from work, positive affirmations can help you stay grounded, grateful and open to the benefits.

NUTRITION: THE EASIEST THING TO CONTROL

Sure, it’s easier to order Uber Eats or Postmates with a leg injury. Once you sit on the couch, it seems like getting up and spending 30 minutes in the kitchen is the equivalent to a full-body workout. “Remember, just because one aspect of your life isn’t working doesn’t mean you should ignore the other pieces,” Zion explained to me over lunch one afternoon. “This is the perfect time to push yourself into trying something new like Whole30. Make food innovative, colorful and fun to keep yourself interested.” I’ll be honest, my nutrition was the first thing to slip after my injury. I found myself looking for a quick coffee or sugar rush when I knew I had to take a long walk through a grocery store after work, but time after time I was proven wrong by the sugar crash that led to me being immobile and tired, sitting on the couch all night long. And that just doesn’t feel like me. With every colorful, nutritious meal I make, I feel a little more like myself.

KEEP MOVING: EVEN IF IT’S BORING

My arms are going to get so toned. That’s all I could tell myself. For right now, I can hardly stand let alone attempt anything that might test my balance or stability, so I’m turning to my dumbbells and every day is arm day. Though it might not seem like much, even the quickest workout can do wonders for you during recovery. Exercise decreases depression, improves sleep and raises self-esteem for injured athletes. It’s important to get approval and recommendations from your doctor before returning to activity after a serious injury. If one body part is immobilized, there’s usually other ways to stay fit while rehabilitating.

Here are Zion’s tips and tricks to sit and stay fit: LOWER-BODY INJURIES Focus on isolating your arms and core with seated upper-body lifting. It’s hard to accomplish cardio training with leg injuries, but doing an arm circuit with low weights and high reps can activate that part of your training. MIDSECTION INJURIES The biggest factor for a midsection injury is maintaining stability. Find exercises with no twisting or jarring movements. Body-weight work can be fun and challenging for these types of injuries, and focusing on high reps in a short amount of time is a good way to get your heart pumping. UPPER-BODY INJURIES Upper-body injuries are the easiest to work around. Focus on body-weight leg and core exercises with plenty of twists to engage your core and practice stability. Stationary bikes offer a fun way to get your cardio in without stressing any upper-body muscles.

48 | september 2019 reflections

LIFESTYLE: IT IS ABOUT YOU, AFTER ALL

For me, lifestyle changes are never fun. After my injury, going to birthday parties and happy hours was more of a challenge than it seemed worth. I stayed in, watched Netflix and planned doctor visits while prepping for post-surgery recovery. A study in the 2013 Journal of Athletic Training found that perceived social support is a predictor of an athlete’s rehabilitation behavior and well-being. Meaning, athletes who feel supported generally have a better rehabilitation experience, are more likely to maintain regular rehabilitation treatments and, in general, heal faster. It took one friend asking if I’d go with her to the gym to give me a wake-up call: My lifestyle revolves around activity, community, the gym and the relationships I maintain formed from those hobbies. I went to the gym, and felt like myself for the first time since I fell off that wall. Your friends and community help you to stay accountable and moving even when it seems impossible. Don’t hide; rather, get a glass of wine with a friend, complain about your leg brace and how terrible it looks with the new dress you just bought, sit in on a gym session and hype your buddy up to run faster or lift heavier. The process will be more bearable and you’ll continue to recognize the person looking back in the mirror each morning, even if they are sporting some new hardware. These tips won’t be applicable to most people right now. I hope they aren’t applicable to you, and hopefully won’t be for a long time, if ever. But if they are, know you aren’t alone and your community has your back. I’ll see you in the gym.

With her new wellness brand, Candace Oliver steps in front of the camera with a new purpose—to share what she’s learned through struggling to feel comfortable in her own skin.

CANDACE OLIVER’S DEFINITION OF BEAUTY HAS RADICALLY CHANGED THROUGH THE YEARS. In her early 20s, she moved from Bellevue to Los Angeles in pursuit of a burgeoning modeling career. She quickly became successful and found herself traveling between LA, Miami and New York working the biggest fashion scenes in the country. On the surface, her life seemed great. She was paid to walk runways in exquisite clothes from dream designers and take pictures with high-fashion photographers. However, despite all the external signs telling her she was beautiful, she felt anything but. Oliver says she was quietly consumed with low self-esteem, anxiety, self-doubt, self-destructive behavior (including some drug and alcohol abuse) and a struggling marriage. “There was a very unhealthy stage to my career,” she says. “So much of my identity came from other people’s validation. Was I pretty enough? Was I thin enough? I was desperate for approval. I didn’t know who I was because I formed to what other people wanted of me.” Her first pregnancy changed everything. Because it was unplanned, she was forced, unexpectedly, to rethink her modeling career, which made her question many things in her life. She was at a crossroads.

“I just remember looking in the mirror and asking myself, “What do I need to do to validate myself? What is the journey to my true identity?” she says. “Before then, beauty and wellness weren’t about being a whole being— mind, body and spirit. I was so focused on the body part that I lost my mind and spirit. As a result, my anxiety rose a lot.” She chose to stop traveling as much and move home to Seattle to raise her son and embark on a new career and life. However, she had no idea what that new life looked like or what she would do. So she kept asking: what is my purpose? Even through her toughest times dealing with a divorce and being a single mom, Oliver held on tightly to some healthy habits. She maintained a varied exercise routine and enjoyed eating healthy foods and learning about nutrition. She says these habits grounded her and made her feel her happiest, so she followed her joy. To support herself and her son, she joined AdvoCare, a wellness and supplement company, and experienced a new satisfaction in sharing a healthy lifestyle with other people, especially women. All the while, she still had a foot in the beauty and modeling industry, but with a much different perspective and objective. Her time at AdvoCare shifted, but she knew focusing on wellness was the right path to her authentic self.

PERSONAL STYLISTS Aubri and Breighela from Breighela James Boutique in Portland styled Candace’s looks. “They are gifted at seeing who you are and finding the right clothes as an expression of your soul.” breighelajames.com 52 | september 2019 reflections

“There is a dream seed in all of us, desires we all have, and building my own wellness brand is that for me,” she says. “I feel a strong desire to impact people, call the best out of people. To see something shift in someone—it doesn’t get better than that.” In 2018 she took the first steps necessary to make that dream come true. She started a blog, vlog, and YouTube channel, all posted on CandaceOliver.com. The purpose is to share all the wellness and beauty tips she picked up throughout her career. This includes everything from makeup tutorials (one of her specialties) to skin care, from fashion inspiration to fresh-ingredient cooking segments. Since remarrying and adding three more kids to her brood, she also shares plenty of sanity-saving advice for families.

In Her Own Words ... BEAUTY Take care of your skin. Always wash your face at night—no matter what! Everything we do is habit-forming, so if we give permission to one night of going to bed with makeup on or not taking care of our skin, that turns into two nights which turns into three, and oh no, a new habit is formed. This is my favorite time of the day—to take makeup off, wash and tone, and load on the serums and moisturizer! FASHION Step out of your comfort zone! So often we end up wearing the same thing and feeling bored. I will see people and think, “Oh, I am so inspired; she looked so cute in those boots and dress.” And then I find myself putting on my mom uniform (aka highwaisted tight black leggings, a sports bra, a gray tank and black baseball cap). The days I step out of my comfort zone I notice I have an extra pep in my step. Change it up, wear something different and pay attention to the way you feel. WELLNESS Prep, prep, prep! I cannot expect to have toned arms and abs with no meal prep or intentional meal planning. You may plan three or five days in advance. The point is, have a plan! You will not only save money because there is a plan in place, you also waste less food, and being disciplined will leak into other areas in your life. Not to mention you will feel amazing and not be tempted by impulse buys for your pantry! FAMILY Take one day to be with just your family. I did this growing up. I remember pretending not to like it, but I actually loved it. Whether this is a Friday or a Sunday or Tuesday, pick one day a week, it may even be half a day if you have lots of kids in sports (I get it!). But this day is dedicated to being with your family! No phones, no distractions—simply family. There is nothing more fruitful than establishing a healthy, strong family unit. LIFESTYLE Learn to say no. It is amazing when you take a few minutes to actually write down your priorities, how this simplifies whether you commit. This also allows you space to self-reflect and determine what is truly important to you. For example, my family is my everything. Let’s say I have been away for a weekend and my girlfriend calls and invites me to a super-fun mommy happy hour on Monday. Although that sounds amazing, I know my family is everything, so when I say no to that fun opportunity, I’m saying yes to my family and I have no regret.

bellevue club september 2019 | 53

Candace’s Daily Routine 1. When you wake up, do not go on social media or straight to a screen. Take a few moments to breathe and set your intention for the day. Meditate, pray, read, journal, even if for only five minutes. 2. Think about three things you are grateful for, and remind yourself of those throughout the day. 3. Act the way you want to feel. If you want to be happy, act happy! Put a smile on your face. If you want to be energized, walk a little faster, pull your shoulders back. 4. Do one thing that scares you a little: maybe it is stepping outside your comfort zone with fashion, maybe it’s making a phone call you have been avoiding that will help advance your business. Whatever it may be, take 30 seconds of courage and do it! 5. Drink water, enough so that your urine is on the clear side. 6. Move your body, whether a walk or a class, just move! 7. Set your alarm clock for the time you want to go to bed. Sleep is so important! Don’t do that one more thing at night—just go to bed!

54 | september 2019 reflections

“The reason I felt so bold to start a blog and YouTube channel is because for the first time in my life I truly felt beautiful,” she says. “I began to journal and something inside of me said, ‘Share this! You are not the only one who struggles in these areas. You are not the only one who feels insecure, stuck, overwhelmed . . . fill in the blank, we’ve all been there.’” The content she currently creates is only the tip of the iceberg. In the future, she sees her brand expanding into a line of affordable, clean beauty product lines and beyond. “I love speaking to large groups of people, preaching, teaching, inspiring, equipping and traveling, and I see myself doing that while pairing with different brands, external and internal,” Oliver says.

CHANEL SMITH, FOR SMITH & MAIN

Reflections magazine: What inspired you to open Smith & Main? Chanel Smith: It has always been my dream to open my own clothing boutique. I grew up in a family of entrepreneurs and small-business owners, so I knew that with hard work and the proper education and experience I could make this dream a reality. As a result, I dedicated myself to doing just that after graduating from high school. I got a degree in retail merchandising and product development as well as a minor in business from Florida State University. I gained experience across the country for over eight years in many different aspects of the industry including wholesale, buying, management and, of course, retail operations. When a retail space in my dream location of Old Bellevue became available, I jumped on the opportunity and Smith & Main was born. RM: Why did you choose downtown Bellevue for the location? CS: I grew up on the Eastside, just outside of Bellevue, so this city has always felt like home to me. I also saw a need in the market for a bigger variety of places for women to shop, especially in a boutique setting. I love the small, intimate feeling that Old Bellevue and Main Street has, and to be a part of a community that supports local businesses was very important to me. I knew a large part of my clientele base also lived on the Eastside, so it was the perfect place for me to set up shop. RM: How would you describe the style represented in your boutique? CS: Stylish, everyday clothing is the focus of Smith & Main. Of course, it varies a little from that, especially seasonally, as we have lots of dressier dresses for events and weddings in store now, as well as more loungewear and gift items during the holiday season. Smith & Main is a place where clients can be dressed head to toe for a variety of different occasions and where they can shop classic, staple items as well as ontrend merchandise at an accessible price point. RM: What is most important to you when choosing the brands to carry? CS: When I am choosing brands and merchandise for the store, the first thing I ask myself is “Who can I see wearing this?” Clothing has to be wearable! No matter how trendy something is, if I can’t picture my customers wearing the style, it doesn’t get bought. I try to have a good assortment of new, unique brands as well as a selection of recognizable brands that my customers already know and love.

RM: How do you describe your personal style? CS: I would describe my personal style as classic, feminine, with a little bit of edge. I love experimenting with new trends and what’s hot in the market, but I only wear things that I absolutely love and that make me feel good. Fashion should spark joy and the power of a good outfit to me is everything. A good outfit can (and should!) inspire happiness and confidence. One of my favorite style quotes is “Life isn’t perfect, but your outfit can be.” Truer words, in my opinion, have never been spoken. RM: Who are your style icons? CS: My ultimate style icon is Victoria Beckham. She is the epitome of chic classic style, and she does it all while balancing a busy life filled with career, family and fun. I draw daily style inspiration as well from all my customers and the amazing women around me. I also love looking at fashion publications as well as social media and fashion blogs to gain outfit and style inspiration. bellevue club september 2019 | 57

PATRICIA MARKEVITCH, FOR ALICIA PERU

Reflections magazine: What inspired you and your mother, Alicia, to open Alicia Peru? Patricia Markevitch: My mother (Alicia) and I had been a wholesaler for 10 years and wanted to connect and be in touch with customers! We thrive by interacting with our customers and are energized to see them find joy and confidence in their purchases. The Alicia Peru boutique is our first stand-alone retail shop, and it realizes the full range of Alicia’s ethos, which includes women’s fashion, accessories and gifts. The boutique is a tribute to years of designing with wonderful fabrics and materials from Alicia’s native Peru: alpaca, pima cotton, gold, silver and horn. RM: Why did you choose downtown Bellevue for the location? PM: Old Main Street in Bellevue was our only option because this is where our local customer base is. We are a local womenowned business; we have joined a local retail community that promotes and supports local retailers and designers.

RM: What fashion trend do you wish would disappear forever? CS: The clunky “Dad” sneaker trend for women has got to go. Those don’t look good on anyone in my opinion, no matter how cool you are. I am also not a fan of the fanny pack or belt bag trend. Practical, yes. But stylish, no. RM: What trends or looks are in for this fall? CS: Animal print, animal print, animal print! Any and all animal prints seem to be on trend this fall season, but especially leopard, zebra and snake print. Expect to see it everywhere and on everything including clothing, accessories and footwear. RM: Is there anything else about Smith & Main you want people to know? CS: Smith & Main is more than just a clothing store; it is just a fun place to be! I run a business, so of course I want people to come in and buy something that they will love, but it is equally important to me that my customers feel welcome, comfortable and confident in the store. I aspire to have a place where women not only want to shop but where they just want to stop in, say hello and hang out for a bit. It is so important, especially now with how big online shopping and e-commerce is, that we create an experience in store that our customers will value. shopsmithandmain.com 58 | september 2019 reflections

RM: How would you describe the style represented in your boutique? PM: Our style is contemporary women’s separates that use top-quality fabrics and fibers like alpaca and pima cotton. Our products are timeless with nuances of the current trends in color, cut and design. We are not faddish, fast or disposable fashion. RM: What is most important to you when choosing the brands to carry? PM: We are all about sustainable luxury. We support and carry products by local and women-owned businesses. We are in the slow-fashion arena and like our products to have some component of handmade/finished details or refined artisanal uniqueness. RM: How do you describe your personal style? PM: Alicia’s personal style is elegant, classic, timeless and tailored . . . in the manner of Carolina Herrera. My personal style is more eclectic in a mix of high/low fashion and styling. Never a total brand dresser. Cosmopolitan with an ode to European styling.

RM: Who are your style icons? PM: Alicia’s style icons are Carolina Hererra, Christine Lagarde, Giovanna Battaglia Engelbert. My style icons include Sofia Coppola, Cate Blanchett, Emmanuelle Alt. RM: What fashion trend do you wish would disappear forever? PM: Acid-washed jeans, onesies for adults and bicycle pants as daywear. RM: What trends or looks are in for this fall? PM: Suit dressing and tailored coat jackets—doublebreasted, trench and classic tie waist. Capes and a reboot of ’70s styling à la Annie Hall. We loved the Celine fall/ winter 2019 looks. Blush pink, creamy pastels and copperbrown hues to intermix with perennial fall/winter color schemes of charcoal gray and black. Animal prints for dresses, shirts and accessories like shawls and handbags. RM: Is there anything else about Alicia Peru you want people to know? PM: We are a mother-and-daughter local business. Alicia began her career in fashion as a model in the 1980s working in downtown Seattle at heritage retailers such as Frederick & Nelson, Littler and I. Magnin (none of which continue to this day). Me and my husband and children returned four years ago to the Pacific Northwest after living and working for 15 years in Europe. aliciaperu.com

KENRDRA FARMER, FOR LINEN & IVORY

Reflections magazine: What inspired you to open Linen & Ivory? Kendra Farmer: I’ve always had a creative side. When I had my first two babies, I started making pillows as a hobby for myself and friends. There was a quick demand and Linen & Ivory was born. RM: How would do you describe the style represented in your pillows? KF: Modern Farmhouse. My ideal customer is someone that is intentional about creating a living space in their home that they truly love. I think we are happier when our homes feel like they accurately represent who we are and it’s an inviting and happy space. RM: What is most important to you when designing your goods and choosing the fabrics? KF: I always want to make sure that the pillows I sell through my shop are something I would put in my own home. I love buying textiles from other countries where I know it is helping a group of people make an income for their family that they wouldn’t have ordinarily. I also have a line of printed pillows that are designed by women (mostly moms). I have a water color artist, a calligrapher and graphic designer who are so talented; I love seeing women use their natural talents to create unique and beautiful art. RM: How do you describe your style? KF: It will probably change in a week, but I am currently loving the modern farmhouse vibe with a little bit of Boho thrown in. I think that’s what having a personal style is—combining styles until you feel like it’s truly you. bellevue club september 2019 | 61

“I think we are happier when our homes feel like they accurately represent who we are.”

RM: Who are your style icons? KF: Joanna Gaines and Studio McGee RM: What interior design trend do you wish would disappear forever? KF: Just like fashion, interior trends seem to be cyclical. But I think people get too caught up in trinkets and clutter—I think we need to say goodbye to our gallery walls that have 52 things on them—less is more. RM: What trends are in for this fall? KF: We will continue to see textures and patterns playing a huge role in textiles (mud cloth, tassels, etc.), woven baskets, metallics, natural wood elements, and indoor plants will continue to be popular this fall. Personally, I’m going to incorporate some indigo and rust into my color palette. 62 | september 2019 reflections

RM: Is there anything else about Linen & Ivory you want people to know? KF: I love my job, and I’m so thankful it allows me to help provide for my family while still giving me the flexibility to raise my kids. But my favorite part of my job is the opportunity it affords me to give back to other people through various charity events I have hosted locally, being able to source my fabric from around the world and employing other women to do what they love. linenandivory.com

EXPLORING WHISTLER UNDER A CANOPY OF TREES Standing along the High Note Trail, I think to myself that there’s nowhere else I’d rather be at this exact moment. In one panorama, I’m taking in the vibrant turquoise hue of glacial-fed Cheakamus Lake, framed by snow-capped peaks and cotton-candy clouds. Along the dirt path, wildflowers in nearly every color of the rainbow pop up. A marmot does the same, and then a pair of Columbian black-tailed deer, who appear to be smiling as they graze. I came to Whistler to walk in the woods. But that adventure begins after night falls—until then, there’s plenty to explore by daylight.

Up in the Clouds

I start my day by taking the Whistler Village Gondola and Peak Express chairlift up to the Cloudraker Skybridge, which opened last year. The excitement builds as the chair inches higher, offering glimpses of the span, floating between two rocky outcroppings. Surrounded by fluffy white clouds, the Cloudraker is nothing if not appropriately named. Every enthusiastic sightseer who steps onto the bridge makes it sway just a little more; I love the little dose of adrenaline mixed with the high-elevation views. The 5.8-mile High Note Trail starts nearby, behind the iconic Inukshuk statue that serves as a reminder of the Olympic Games held here in 2010 (coincidentally, my first Whistler visit). After a few hours full of wondrous views, including of the jagged mountain Black Tusk, I feel fulfilled with my nature time—and I still have the evening ahead of me.

A Symphony of Sound and Light

When I first heard about one of Whistler’s newest attractions, the multimedia night walk Vallea Lumina, I was intrigued. I’m not quite sure what a multimedia night walk even is, but there’s only one way to find out. The experience begins as soon as I arrive at Cougar Mountain, thanks to a shuttle that picks up guests near Whistler Village. At “base camp,” decked out in Adirondack chairs and firepits for s’mores, I’m briefed on what lies ahead: A mystery involving two hikers who went missing some time ago, believed to be looking for a secret trailhead. As a deputy ranger, I’ll have a chance to put together the clues and see if I can figure out what really happened.

UNDER THE DARKNESS OF NIGHT, A NEW WORLD COMES TO LIFE.

As I make my way through old-growth forest, a combination of beautiful lights, melodic songs, and impressive holograms combine to create an immersive story— there’s something to experience every step of the way. The mystery aspect motivates me to take in every detail I can, not knowing what might be relevant down the line. This is technology at its best—I feel more connected to my surroundings instead of less, more in tune with the marvels of the natural world. Without giving too much away, I’ll just say it’s truly magical—but then again, so is any time spent in the outdoor wonderland of Whistler.

SNACK Naked Sprout Juice Bar Café

The health-conscious smoothies here—flavored with ingredients like dates, matcha, and raw cacao—are the ideal afternoon snack. If you’re looking for something more substantial, they also serve paninis, salad bowls, wraps, and other healthful comfort food.

Purebread

The bad news about Purebread: It’s difficult to decide what to get from an overwhelming number of options of cakes, pastries, and breads. The good news: You can’t go wrong. So whether you opt for a salted caramel bar, a buckwheat sour cherry scone, a carrot loaf, or perhaps a drunken apple blondie, you’ll have no regrets.
