Letter from the publisher You may notice some changes

In 2021 we celebrated a major milestone at Wine Country Publications, as our flagship magazine Wine Country This Week, turned 40. It was a bittersweet celebration, as we struggled through a pandemic, different levels of closures, restrictions and uncertainties. Throughout all this adversity, however, wine country remained strong, wine lovers continued to make their pilgrimage to all our storied wineries and we persevered. Many of our readers were searching for a sense of normalcy, others looking to escape the barrage of bad news and some just wanted to take in the beauty and serenity that Napa and Sonoma have to offer. As we’ve learned this last year, we are resilient and wine country is back and thriving, and in that spirit, we are transforming Wine Country This Week into Wine Country This Month. In an effort to better serve our readers and advertisers, going monthly will allow us to elevate our magazine to match the luxury and vitality that our region has to offer. Di Rosa Center for Contemporary Art Celebrates 25 Years of Rabble-Rousing Art in Napa Valley 2022 marks a milestone 25th Anniversary for di Rosa Center for Contemporary Art as a public arts organization. During the past quarter-century, di Rosa has originated groundbreaking exhibitions and programs, supported emerging and established artists, while preserving its stunning 217 acres in Napa Valley. Di Rosa will be commemorating the silver anniversary all year long with a series of special events ranging from artist talks and films to concerts and theatrical performances. On May 14, patrons are invited to attend a talk by Executive Director Kate Eilertsen and guests on the anniversary of Rene di Rosa’s birthday, reflecting on the importance of di Rosa’s collection and site. On December 3, the festivities will culminate with a 25th Anniversary Celebration Gala honoring Eleanor Coppola and Lynn Hershman Leeson for their extraordinary lives in the arts. A complete listing of 25th Anniversary events can be found on the 25th Anniversary webpage. In anticipation of this banner year, the organization adopted a new mission statement in late 2021, promising to “engage its community in the connective power of art and nature” through its permanent collection, contemporary exhibitions and educational programs. This evokes the vision of founders Rene and Veronica di Rosa, who sold their famed vineyards to Seagram in order to build a public “art park,” which opened in 1997. Originally known as the di Rosa Preserve: Art & Nature, the organization changed its name to

the di Rosa Center for Contemporary Art in 2017. Di Rosa’s 217 acres provide a spectacular setting for the organization’s collection of approximately 1600 artworks – one of the leading collections of art produced in Northern California since 1960. “Rene wasn’t afraid to take risks with his support of young, provocative artists who are now international art world icons,” Executive Director Kate Eilertsen states. Going forward, “these artists will continue to give us the ability to understand the world in new and profound ways.” Looking forward to its next 25 years, di Rosa is committed to engaging new audiences within wine country and beyond through dynamic community partnerships and a renewed commitment to the values of diversity, equity and inclusion. “Rene and Veronica di Rosa gave our community a legendary gift when they not only supported artists from the Bay Area but also a beautiful art park for hikes, picnics, bird watching and watching the sun set,” states Liz Dietz, di Rosa Board of Directors Co-President. 2022 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition Sweepstake Medal Winners BY LAURA NESS

The medals were flowing and the wines were showing well at the 22nd annual San Francisco Chronicle Competition held at the Cloverdale Citrus Fair January 11-14, 2022. Featuring only wines from the US, Canada and Mexico, it is the largest wine competition held on US soil. Beginning with the Sparkling Category, Gloria Ferrer’s 2014 Royal Cuvée Brut bested three other bubblies, including a Blanc de Blanc (2017 Vino Godfather, North Coast), Blanc de Noirs (NV Battle Creek Cellars, YamhillCarlton, OR) and a bubbly Rosé of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir (2017 Peltier Gala Cuvée Brut, Lodi) to win Best Sparkling. Bragging rights for Best White went to winemaker Susan Tipton of Acquiesce Winery & Vineyards for her 2020 Viognier from Lodi. The field of white wines was 17 strong, representing a broad spectrum of varietals beyond Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay, to include Albarino, Gruner Veltliner, Picpoul Blanc, Traminette and Vignoles. Tipton had three other wines in contention here, including her Grenache Blanc, Picpoul and Roussanne. Taking Best Rosé was the 2020 Bernard Griffin Rosé of Sangiovese from Columbia Valley in Washington. It was far and away the best of the field of 6 that made it to finals, including a rosé of Carignane (2021 Carol Shelton Wild Thing Rendezvous, Mendocino County), a rosé of Grenache (2021 Wood Family Pink Pearl, Livermore) and seriously juicy Gamay and Marquette, the 2020 Chateau Chantal Amour Rosé from Michigan. Best Red of Show went to the 2018 Landmark La Encantada Pinot Noir from Sta. Rita Hills. It had stiff 12

competition from 24 other red wines and blends vying for tops in this category. In the Specialty Category were six vastly different liquid beasts, including a Late Harvest Muscat Canelli (2021 Alapay, Central Coast), a Mango Symphony fruit wine (Obsession, CA), a port style wine of Muscadine and Chardonnay, a distilled/fortified port (NV Carter Creek Family Winery Dominum Tinto, TX), a Macintosh cider from Gowans of Mendocino, and a pomegranate Mead from Chaucer’s Mead by Bargetto Winery in Santa Cruz. The 2017 Bianco Riserva Muscadine/Chardonnay from Chateau Elan Cellars in Braselton, GA, walked away with Best in Show for the Specialty class. Best Packaging this year was awarded to the M2 Patina Red Wine from Acampo, CA, (Certified Green, Lodi Rules), featuring an elaborate cartouche on the massively heavy bottle. The San Francisco Chronicle North American Wine Competition, generally held in January, is the first major wine competition of the year. As was the case last year, there will be no public tasting in 2022. Results of the competition can be found at www.winejudging.com. There, you can also read the excellent tasting notes on all the Best of Class winners, expertly penned by longtime wine journalist and judge, Mike Dunne, formerly wine columnist for the Sacramento Bee. The SF Chronicle Competition website pays tribute to three longtime judges who passed away in the last year: Chip Cassidy, Jill Ditmire and Jim Caudill. The perfect blend of artistry and theatricality When The Show Must Go On All Broadway power couple David R. Gordon and Kristin Piro knew when the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the New York theatre industry in March of 2020 was that they needed to find a new, momentary, creative outlet. Turns out, the couple remembered, perhaps over a glass of California wine country gold itself, they had a mutual passion for wine. “I always worked at restaurants between acting jobs,” said Broadway actor and winemaker, David R. Gordon. “When the pandemic closed both of our shows, my wife Kristin and I decided to try out the wine industry.” And what better place to — quite literally — dip one’s toes in the wine than among the community where the couple not only fell in love but were already well-known thanks to their outstanding performances with Sonoma’s Transcendence Theatre Company. With the destination clear, Gordon took his past experiences under some of New York City’s most lauded restaurant sommeliers and quickly landed an internship at Kenwood’s prestigious Deerfield Ranch. “I learned so, so much by working harvest and being immersed in the wine culture at Deerfield,” Gordon said. “Kristin was also soon hired on as well to work in the tasting room. Our tryout in the wine world was shaping up really well.”

A New Winery Waiting In The Wings It was a little luck and gentle coax, however, from friends — longtime Sonoma residents, Chuck and Cathy Williamson — that changed the game for Gordon and Piro. “Chuck and Cathy had their one-acre vineyard — now our “Front Row” — made by a different winemaker for years,” Gordon said, “but two weeks prior to the 2020 harvest, he informed them he wasn’t able to make the wine for them. Thankfully though, Deerfield was able to fit them in for a custom crush and we got the grapes processed.” Shortly after fermentation was completed on the Williamson’s wine, the couple invited Gordon and Piro over for dinner. “After the meal, when Chuck asked us, ‘So, what are you going to do with all that wine?’ We initially said, ‘huh?’” Gordon recalled of the magical moment. “Once we realized he was giving us the yield, Chuck said, ‘David, you guys have been toying with this idea a while now. The wine is yours.” “We were stunned, and so incredibly thankful,” Gordon went on. “And, we are loving this new way of making art.”

The Featured Ensemble Because Gordon and Piro were able to get their hands on a large number of different organic or sustainably farmed Sonoma County varieties, the new winemakers chose to release four cuveés as their fledgling lineup. The first, a Provence-style rosé of Syrah called “Made You Blush” offers a bright but balanced palate with a nuanced hint of acidity and notes of summer strawberry. “Front Row,” the 2020 Rhône-style blend sourced directly from the aforementioned tiny sunkissed vineyard smack dab in the middle of the Valley of the Moon, suggests a

The first of the Intermission’s two reds is a bold, dark berried Zinfandel known as “RED.LIP.ZIN.” The hint of black currant and blueberry from the Zin are ripened up perfectly with notes of cocoa and white pepper deriving straight from the 5% “kiss” of Sonoma Cab the winemakers added for some earthiness. The grand finale of the lineup is the robust Bordeaux-style, “Octave”. – Mint –

Mentha, or mint, is a hybrid from the Lamiaceae family, which contains around 15 to 20 plant species, including peppermint and spearmint. This miracle herb has been popular for centuries – both fresh and dried – and used in a myriad of culinary and medicinal concoctions for its warm, aromatic, sweet flavor with cooling aftertaste and wealth of healing properties. A darling of the craft cocktail scene, it’s the backbone of the widely consumed Mint Juleps on Derby Day and the star of various interpretations of “mules” like the classic Moscow, (vodka), Kentucky (bourbon), Mexican (tequila) and London (gin). Fast growing, it’s a perennial so plant it once and watch it spread for a never-ending supply during each summer growing season.

– Basil –

Also a member of the Lamiaceae family, Ocimum basilicum, or basil, is one of the most widely planted herbs across all continents. Sacred in India for its medical healing, the South American ayahuasca ritual calls for it to avoid “bad visions”. And it’s a staple in all South East Asian curries. Sometimes lemony or herbal, but always rooted in notes of anise or licorice, this versatile annual herb works a charm in savory and sweet drinks alike. Riff on a classic and sub-in basil for mint in a Mojito, or how about a Basil Gin Smash. Basil partners well with blackberry, strawberry and raspberry so give it a go in a drink paired to any ripe berries, and pro tip: use a clear spirit like vodka, gin or tequila blanca to keep basil’s fragrant aromas and savory flavors front and center.

– Lemon Verbena –

One of the easiest and most prolific growers in the perennial category, Aloysia citrodora, or lemon verbena is typically only thought of as an ingredient in luxe beauty creams and candles. However, its base essential oils relieve muscle spasms and reduce fevers, and Europeans have used it for centuries as a sedative, to increase appetite in the sick, and to rid indigestion. Its glossy but coarse leaves omit a glorious lemon-herbal scent when touched and it’s a standout in any good artisan tea blend. Craft mixologists often steep the leaves in a clear spirit like vodka or grain alcohol to “lift” the old standard libations, adding a heady aromatics note to the drink. Creating a simple syrup with it (recipe below) is a fantastic way to harness the lemonygoodness of this herb and add a touch of sunshine to any cocktail year-round.

Recipe courtesy The MODern Bar and Home Lemon Verbena-Ginger-Mint Gimlet 2 sprigs of fresh mint 1 oz Lemon Verbena Sugar (for Syrup and rimming) 1 oz Royal Roseme Ginger-Lime Syrup 1 oz Lemon Verbena Syrup 1 thumb-size piece of fresh ginger 1 lime 2 oz gin Muddle mint and fresh ginger in a shaker. Add ice, gin, Ginger-Lime Syrup, Lemon Verbena Syrup, juice from the lime. Shake well and strain with a fine strainer into a reserved glass. Garnish with a sprig of lemon verbena.

Lemon Verbena Sugar

4 fresh lemon verbena leaves 3 Tbl sugar Zest half side of a lemon Grind sugar, lemon verbena and lemon zest in a spice grinder until very fine. Reserve 3 tablespoons in a microwave safe bowl to use for Lemon Verbena Syrup. Put remaining lemon verbena sugar on a small plate. Take a slice from the lime and run it around the rim of a coupe or martini glass then dip rim in Lemon Verbena Sugar. 20 38

Put 3 tablespoons of reserved Lemon Verbena Sugar in a microwave dish with 3 tablespoons of water. Microwave on high at 20 second intervals until sugar has completely dissolved. Strain liquid through a coffee filter to achieve a clear, viscous liquid. WINE COUNTRY THIS MONTH SPRING/SUMMER 2020

– Thyme – One of the most fragrant perennials, rosemary, or Salvia rosmarinus, has an immediately recognizable woodsy-pine scent with herbal notes complementing most any savory dish. Prided by ancient Egyptians, Romans and Greeks, it is still revered today in most cultures as a sacred herb. For cocktail makers, rosemary creates a wonderful earthy depth in drinks and its resin undertones can, if done with a light hand, sit quietly in the background acting similar to bitters by lending a subtle roundness to a cocktail. Rosemary plays well with punchy brown spirits like whiskeys and bourbons, smoky mezcals or barrel-aged tequilas. Try it in a Whiskey Sour or make a simple syrup with the needles and add it to an Old-Fashioned or a Mezcal Margarita for an unexpected balsam note.

Yet another aromatic perennial evergreen herb in the Lamiaceae family, thyme, or thymus vulgaris, grows year-round in California and blooms proliﬁcally in summer and into early fall. Romans used it to purify their rooms and even added it to cheese and liqueurs for an “aromatic ﬂavor”. In the Middle Ages, Europeans placed thyme beneath their pillows as it was thought to aid in sleeping and ward off nightmares. Today, we use this earthy, slightly minty or lemony herb predominantly as a culinary spice, but it’s fast-growing popularity in mixology makes it a perfect mate with honey or agave. Cocktail “sours” like those based in whiskey or bourbon are a natural pairing, but it’s lovely with citrus too. It shines in lemon, lime and grapefruit juicebased drinks so add it to your next Salty Dog cocktail for a twist!

Fools’ Spring: Although there can be lots of sunshine here in California and mild to warm daytime temps in February and March, don’t let the blue skies trick you into planting too early. Northern California can see overnight temperatures dip down to the low 30s through late Spring, with frost advisories typically not lifted until mid-May. So keep a watchful eye on the weather and rule of thumb: Plant all seasonal herbs AFTER Memorial Day to ensure hardy and healthy plants. Buy Organic: Unlike most shrubs or outdoor plants you may buy at a garden center or nursery, herbs are primarily used for culinary purposes so you will be eating them. Like most fruits and vegetables, buying organic or those grown without synthetics, chemicals and harmful sprays is much better for your health. The same ideology applies to your herb garden. Buy organic or pesticidefree starters if possible and look for organically grown seed packets if you’re planning to raise seedlings from scratch.

To most people’s surprise, Lavandula, commonly known as lavender, is a member of mint family (Lamiaceae). Native in all geographic areas with a temperate climate, lavender is typically found as an ornamental or landscape plant and used most frequently commercially for the extraction of its essential oils for its calming and soothing effect on the body. Its sweet, floral fragrance is unmistakable, and, depending on the species, the buds can have a taste of lemon or mild citrusy notes. The stalks are similar to rosemary with a woodsy taste and fragrance. For cocktail lovers, lavender is fun to explore as a simple syrup when added to lighter style drinks, and it’s simply heavenly in a tall glass of icy cold lemonade on a blistering hot day. Its best spirit-partner is Gin, so try it in a version of a Bee’s Knees or a Lavender-Sage Sling as an aperitif. Or, pop a sprig of lavender in a flute of Champagne or sparkling wine for a heady note and citrus-herbal flavor. Honey, agave and vanilla are great playmates with lavender and help bring out the sweetness of this beautiful purply-blue herb. A Lavender Martini made with a vanilla vodka, lavender simple syrup as well as dried lavender petals for garnish make for a stunning sipper, but also flood the senses with thoughts of pastoral fields in Provence on a summer’s day. “Grand Cru” Vineyards of Napa Valley What’s in a Name? In Napa Valley and beyond, there are hundreds of well-known vineyards with reputations for producing the very best wine in the world. In Europe, classification systems and designations mark the greatness of a vineyard site and its wine. But in Napa Valley, greatness is designated by taste and reputation. There is no doubt that Napa Valley produces some of the world’s best wine, and despite the fact that vineyard greatness is not demarcated by a legal system, there are widely recognized “Grand Cru” vineyard sites across the Valley. Here are some of our favorite, standout vineyards – and their respective wineries and the wines they produce – that should absolutely be on your 2022 wine bucket-list.

FAY Vineyard, Stags’ Leap Wine Cellars

The FAY Vineyard was the very first planting of Cabernet Sauvignon in what is now the Stags Leap District AVA. This vineyard has earned great acclaim for its renowned winery – Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars. The vineyard is composed of fine bale gravelly clay loam and volcanic, alluvial soils, yielding a softer side of Cabernet that brings forward perfumed aromatics and berry qualities on the palate. Characterizing a classic expression of Napa Valley Cabernet, the 2016 FAY Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is all-at-once powerful and inviting. It shows an aromatic bouquet of alluring ripe raspberry, blueberry and baking spice aromas, while the palate grabs a hold of you with its with blueberry, blackberry and cassis notes, satin texture and softly finessed structure. While each vintage from this site carries its own distinct qualities, voluptuousness is a trait that traces itself through this delicate yet powerful wine, year after year.

Three Palms Vineyard, Duckhorn Vineyards Located in Napa Valley’s Calistoga AVA at 375-foot elevation, Duckhorn Vineyards’ Three Palms Vineyard has become a benchmark site for Bordeaux varietals, and is most known for their Merlot bottling. A unique composition of lean soils – including bale loam, Cortina stony loam, bale clay loam and river wash – contribute to the finished wine’s distinct qualities. The 2016 Three Palms Vineyard Merlot is a classic representation of its vineyard site, with its warmer climate covered in volcanic stones. The 2016 Three Palms Vineyard Merlot is a stunning wine that boasts aromas of plum, wild cherry, cinnamon and a distinctly soft floral note; layers of baking chocolate and vanilla linger beneath. The palate is smooth and inviting, with round features and fullbodied flavors of blueberry, spiced Christmas cake, figs and a subtle hint of stony minerality. A revered Merlot, this current vintage lives up to all expectations and proudly stands tall as a single varietal Napa Valley Merlot. 26 32

Central Park West Vineyard, Trinchero Napa Valley Paying homage to the Trinchero family’s New York City origins, the Central Park West Vineyard calls the St. Helena AVA its home. This vineyard site is characteristically warm with excellent sun exposure on the valley floor, and is made up of deep, loamy soils. Wine crafted from this vineyard is produced in limited quantities. Located in the St. Helena AVA, the Central Park West Vineyard is a sunny site with one of the warmest climates in Napa Valley, producing a Cabernet with dark and savory aromas of blueberry, sweet tobacco leaf and cedar. On the palate, the 2014 Central Park West Cabernet Sauvignon is full-bodied and silky smooth, with ripe berry fruit and flavors of vanilla, baking spice and sweet tobacco leaf.

CENTRAL PARK WEST VINEYARD, TRINCHERO NAPA VALLEY

Trailside Vineyard, Heitz Cellar Heitz Cellar’s Trailside Vineyard is another iconic Napa Valley site. This historic winery has legendary status, as its pioneering vintner Joe Heitz crafted Napa Valley’s first-ever vineyard designated Cabernet Sauvignon in the late 1950s. The 2013 Trailside Vineyard is an incredible combination of sixteen different blocks of Cabernet Sauvignon, planted to seven distinct clones across eight unique soil types. Situated in the Rutherford AVA, this vineyard is known for its impeccable Cabernet growing conditions. The vines are planted at an east to west orientation so that the grapes ripen gradually with dappled sunlight. The result is small, highly concentrated berries that craft an elegant, structured and deeply concentrated wine. This 2013 Trailside Vineyard is a quintessential Cabernet Sauvignon that expresses that earthy quality wine lovers can’t get enough of from Rutherford Cabs. It’s bold yet delicate, with smooth tannins and lots of structure. Ripe blackberry, cassis and wild raspberries mix with notes of vanilla, cedar and baking spices. With fruit and savory notes, this Cabernet is a balanced and complex beauty. 27 33

To Kalon Vineyard, Robert Mondavi Winery Perhaps the most well-known vineyard in Napa Valley, To Kalon rests on the valley floor in the revered Oakville AVA. Well-drained alluvial soils – of gravel, clay loams and bale loams – create an ideal growing condition for Cabernet grapes, sending their roots deep into the soil to seek groundwater. And with the vineyard’s prime location in the center of Napa Valley, the vineyard’s heat is appropriately tempered by the coastal fog that surges through the Valley in the mornings and evenings. Blended from the finest blocks in Mondavi’s To Kalon Vineyard, the 2016 To Kalon Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve embodies the magic of this site. Cassis, black currant and oak spice waft from the glass, while rich layers of blackberry and ripe plum unfold on the palate with notes of vanilla, eucalyptus and oak spice. Complex and powerful, while simultaneously elegant and finessed, this wine is an authentic representation of To Kalon.

Hideaway Vineyard, Chappellet Chappellet’s Hideaway Vineyard is located in Pritchard Hill—a region deemed an unofficial AVA in Napa Valley by critics and wine connoisseurs alike. The Chappellet family pioneered this winegrowing region and continues to make profound wines from their estate vineyards. Geographically speaking, the area is situated due east from the Rutherford and Oakville AVAs. Rocky slopes characterize this unique site with an impressive elevation of 1,425 feet high. The aromas of Chappellet’s 2017 Hideaway Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon leap from the glass with notes of cassis, blackberry, espresso and bittersweet chocolate; layers of baking spice unfold with each swirl. While seemingly characteristic of mountainous vineyard sites with its strong structure and complexity, the wine is simultaneously soft and sophisticated. Bold berry liqueur flavors are coupled with cassis, vanilla and baking spice. This Cabernet is both a beautiful expression of its distinct site and of the style wine lovers expect from Napa Valley’s more mountainous terroir. 28 34

Napa Valley’s Cabernet Season: Why Visit Now?

On the heels of Napa Valley’s harvest is Cabernet Season, which stretches from November to April. During this time, visitors can get a taste of newly released Cabernet Sauvignons while taking advantage of the region’s slower pace, lower hotel rates, wider access to winemakers, and new tasting experiences. Not to mention, nabbing reservations at Michelin-starred restaurants has never been easier. Photo opps are also endless with brilliant swaths of mustard flowers popping up everywhere. Here’s a Napa Valley winter travel guide blending new and noteworthy. This year marks the 12th annual Winter in the Wineries Passport program. This calendar itself is a celebration, because most, if not all of these festivals are returning after a much-too-long, COVID-inspired break. From the Anderson Valley to Monterey and everywhere in between, California is gearing up for 2022 with dozens of upcoming wine-related festivals. Some are centered around a specific appellation like Stags Leap District’s Vineyard to Vintner Weekend and Discover Coombsville. Others are all about one varietal such as World of Pinot Noir or ZinEx. Love Riesling, Gewürztraminer and Pinot Gris? Don’t miss the Anderson Valley White Wine Festival in February. Curious about what wines taste like fresh from the barrel? Spend a couple days along Sonoma County’s Wine Road in March. Looking for a more indulgent culinary event? Local wineries will pair their wines with international traditions of open flame cuisine. The expansive historic Amador County Fairgrounds will be divided into four zones, each representing an iconic wine region: South of France (Rhône), Italy, Spain/Portugal (Iberia), and “Heritage California” (claiming Zinfandel and Mission). These zones will pay homage to the regions with chefs preparing openfire locavore dishes, musicians playing regional melodies and tasting of more than 200 award-winning wines. Only the best wines of Amador will be featured at the Festival.

• Anderson Valley Pinot Noir Festival MAY 20-22 – BOONVILLE, PHILO, YORKVILLE

More than 40 wineries will be pouring during the Pinot Noir Festival, including more than a dozen prestige labels from Napa and Sonoma that covet Anderson Valley grapes. Plus chefs will serve up food pairings all weekend.

DAVID SUNDBERG

TEDESCHI FAMILY WINERY Winemaker. Winemaking. Wine. The words conjure romance, glamour, glorious fall nights by a toasty fire. In actuality, the process of winemaking is a lengthy and arduous task but one that suits David Sundberg perfectly. As the resident winemaker at Tedeschi Family Winery for the past eleven years, Sundberg understands the nuances of modern winemaking including things like large and small harvests, drought years, wildfires, and so much more. Today, Tedeschi Family Winery produces around 2,000 cases per year – up from just a couple hundred cases a decade ago – with varietals that include both a Napa Cabernet and Sauvignon Blanc, a Primitivo, a rosé, a Viognier and, of course, their flagship Petite Sirah among others. Along the way, Sundberg has been there to guide the family, eventually taking over as head winemaker. He is well equipped to lead the charge, given a degree in enology from California State Fresno. Armed with his degree and a fair amount of experience thanks to the school’s 300-ton winery set-up, Sundberg jumped head first into his career, making wine for Ste. Michelle Estates, Elara, Conn Creek and Villa Mt. Eden. To broaden his industry scope, Sundberg uprooted himself, relocating to Chile to make wine for a small family winery in the Maipo Valley. Returning to the States with fresh knowledge and an international perspective, Sundberg continued to hone his winemaking skills while consulting for wineries that included Ottimino, William Knuttel Wines and Tedeschi Family Winery. The very family-oriented nature of Tedeschi appealed to Sundberg and he fell into an easy rapport with patriarch, Emil Tedeschi. Possessing a similar winemaking style that strives for

balance, and one that reflects the character of the individual varietal, Sundberg and Tedeschi built a mutual respect for one another. Over the years, Sundberg’s knowledge of the industry and winemaking aptitude have helped Tedeschi Family Winery grow their production with increasing quality in each passing vintage. “Emil and the family have a winemaking style that is similar to mine and this is why it’s been such a joy to work with them over the years,” said Sundberg who went on to describe the wines as refined. “We aim for restraint. Big, overripe wines are not a part of our flavor profile.” It seems to be working as the winery’s club has been growing by leaps and bounds with the wines being “well received” by locals and visitors alike. The tasting room is now open by appointment, making a visit a more relaxing and enjoyable experience for all parties. “We look forward to guests touring the winery and tasting our wines,” said Sundberg who encourages people to check the website for upcoming events or to make reservations. A bit of a jack of all trades, Sundberg is also a talented chef who is as passionate about food as he is about winemaking. In his down time, he lives in Santa Rosa with his wife and two young sons. Tedeschi Family Winery is located at 2779 Grant Street, Calistoga, just a half a mile south of Old Faithful Geyser. Visitors are invited to the winery Monday-Saturday by appointment from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. for tasting. Wine Tasting Visiting a winery tasting room may sometimes be intimidating, especially if you are not used to wine tasting and aren’t quite sure what to expect. Additionally, Covid-19 has made it necessary for some changes and adaptations. Following the guidelines and etiquette tips below will help enhance your experience as you travel through wine country. Due to Covid-19, there have been changes to the wine tasting adventures. So please before you go: • Plan in advance. Most wineries are now by appointment and in some cases “as space is available” (should you not have made reservations). Don’t be shy to ask at the last minute, but understand they may be full or be reserved. • Understand that there may be a time limit • Ask about the different tasting experiences and costs. • If you plan to “share” a tasting, ask if it is okay. You may still be charged per person. • If this applies, ask if the winery is dog/child friendly. • Be sure to adhere to individual, local and state guidelines in place at the time (i.e. mask wearing until seated, etc.) • Be flexible • Don’t be self-conscious to share a tasting (*if appropriate) with your companion – it’s not looked on as being cheap, in fact, it’s smart. • Don’t worry if you think you don’t know good wine. “Good wine” is what you like. Period. • You don’t have to finish the glass. You are tasting, not drinking – use the dump bucket. Those little sips add up fast. • You don’t have to like everything poured. The reason you are tasting is to see what you do and don’t like. • Take time to smell the roses, or wine! Swirl the wine in the bowl of the glass then take your time, put your nose into the bowl of the glass … and inhale to experience the bouquet. See what fragrances you can identify: Earthy? Lemon? Honeysuckle? Cherry? Tobacco? It’s okay if you don’t identify any of those things, with time and tasting you will! • Remember the five “S’s” of wine tasting: See (the wine in the glass), Swirl, Smell, Sip and Savor. (Take a

small sip. Let the liquid surround your taste buds, what flavors can you identify)? • Ask questions! Remember … there are no stupid questions. You are there to enjoy and learn, and your server is there to help. • Don’t feel pressured to buy a bottle or to join a wine club, (however, if the tasting is free, or if you have a private tasting with a winemaker, it is good form to purchase a bottle). • Leave a tip if you have had a nice experience ($5-$20 is a general rule, depending on the type of tasting). • Don’t wear scents into a tasting room (cologne or perfume), and try not to wear white! • Ask your server to recommend their favorite wineries to visit. • Seek smaller, out-of-the-way, boutique wineries. • Eat breakfast before you leave for the day and … hydrate – hydrate – hydrate! Hint: Drink one glass of water for each glass of wine. • Bring something to snack on such as crackers, breadsticks or a baguette, (but inquire in advance if outside food is okay to bring in). Take time for lunch. When picnicking at a winery, never bring wine from another winery • Don’t try to do too much. In general, three to four wineries will fill your day. • If possible have a designated driver (or use a driving service). If staff feels you have had enough to drink they may refuse service, it’s for your own well-being. • Trust your palate. Don’t worry if you don’t like what your friends or companions like. Not everyone likes the same things. This is about you – not them. • Enjoy yourself! Please be respectful of all conditions and procedures. Wineries have had challenges to adjust their normal procedures due to Covid-19. Everything they do is to insure your safety, pleasure and that you have a great time. Covid-19 has had many positive effects for wine tasting: More intimate, less crowded, more time to really talk to your winery host. With this is mind ... let’s go tasting and have fun!
