Concert series builds a bridge between the community and the next generation of jazz artists

The well respected Idyllwild Arts Academy brings the 29th annual Jazz in the Pines fundraiser with an exciting lineup of live performances and workshops. Artists and students will entertain on the school’s 205-acre campus as well as select venues in Idyllwild, including Ferro, Middle Ridge Winery, the Grand Idyllwild Lodge, Creekstone Lodge, Harvey House, and Cafe Aroma.

The event is again curated by New York Times-featured jazz vocalist Rose Colella. Headliners include Grammy award-winning trumpeter John Daversa and Marshall Hawkins’ Seahawk MOJO, along with Euphoria Brass Band, Joshua White, Sherry Williams, Yve Evans, Rose Colella, Tom Hynes, Dan St. Marseille, Bob Boss, Frank Fontaine, Tina Raymond

The festival features 13 venues hosting 27 public performances, master classes, book readings/signings, and live podcast recordings, as well as an interview by Idyllwild Arts President Pamela Jordan with world-renowned artists for her podcast, “One World. One Idyllwild. The Series.”

The new Jazz in the Pines Festival and Student Clinic restores the original vision of festival cofounder Dr. Marshall Hawkins, the legendary bassist, beloved teacher, and walking treasure trove of jazz.

Idyllwild Arts Jazz in the Pines runs through July 15 at various locations in Idyllwild. Tickets range from $25 to $500 (several events are free). For more information and tickets visit idyllwildarts.org.

Interesting facts about the blueberries

• The modern blueberry is a 20th-century invention. Prior to this time, the only way to enjoy blueberries was to scavenge for them in the wild!

• Early colonists boiled blueberries in milk and made gray paint out of them.

• Blueberries are native to North America, and the highbush varieties were not introduced into Europe until the 1930s.

• Blueberries are ripe when they are plump and colored a deep blue with a dusting of gray. Any glimmer of red means the berry is still tart, not sweet and not ready to be picked.

• Blueberries like their soil acidic so surround them with organic matter (pine needles) that will decompose and nourish the roots.

• Naturally free of sodium, blueberries also contain potassium, calcium, and magnesium which all help to lower blood pressure.

• Blueberries look adorable grown in containers. And they love that environment! The Top Hat in particular looks so sweet.

• Blueberries have only 84 calories for each one-cup serving and numerous studies have linked them to the loss of stomach fat. So they help with weight loss.

Desert Films Summer Heat Film Series

The Palm Springs Cultural Center’s Historic Camelot Theatre and Deserted Films, presents the Summer Heat Film Series, a curated collection of movies where the heat is practically a character. Sit in air-conditioned comfort and behold a series of films set against the weather we are all seeking relief from.

Each screening will feature a live introduction and thematic film ephemera provided by Deserted Films.

On July 9, the heat moves south to the French Quarter with Elia Kazan’s “A Streetcar Named Desire” (1951). With literal and metaphorical temperatures rising, Tennessee Williams’ characters simmer in tense and heartbreaking scenes that helped catapult Marlon Brando’s career.

Billy Wilder’s “The Seven Year Itch” (1955) is up on July 23. A cartoonish look

at midcentury marriage, Wilder’s film finds its characters cooling off in a variety of ways. That notorious image of Marilyn Monroe is just one of them.

Tickets and a full schedule are available at https://tinyurl.com/26ysmj3e. Located at 2300 E Baristo Rd, in Palm Springs.

“A Streetcar Named Desire”

Are We Seniors Yet?

When do we actually become seniors? That varies, depending who we ask.

Is it age 50, when all the AARP ads come to our mailbox? Maybe it’s age 60, when we can get food assistance through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or receive Meals on Wheels deliveries. Is it 62, when we can start to collect some of our Social Security? If we’re taking a Gallup Poll, 65 is the starting senior age.

How about age 65, when we need to sign up for Medicare or pay a penalty later if we don’t? Or is it 66 or 67, when we can collect more Social Security, or age 70, when we can collect even more? Are we finally seniors at age 73, when we need to take out some of our IRA or pay a penalty on our taxes?

Then there are those instances that vary by state or industry or location to determine if we are seniors yet: auto insurance, retirement homes or communities, cellphone service providers, restaurants, grocery stores, train travel, motels, senior low-income programs, museums,

theaters and DMV in-person renewals.

Most disturbing, however, of all the senior-related numbers were the results of a poll that asked: At what age should women stop wearing jeans?

Stop wearing jeans? What kind of person even comes up with ideas like that?

It was decided, as a result of that poll, that age 53 is when women should hang up the denim.

I don’t mind being asked if I’d like the senior discount in a restaurant. I don’t mind being told I should apply for the local seniors electric bill help.

But I fear the day is coming when the pendulum swings in the other direction and we might have to prove we’re young enough to buy a pair of jeans.

Summer recipe - easy pasta salad

Ingredients:

• 1/4 lb. sliced bacon

• 1 small onion, chopped

• 2 garlic cloves, minced

• 4 ears corn, kernels cut off and cobs discarded

• 1 large fresh jalapeño chile, seeded and finely chopped

• 1 (10-oz.) package frozen baby lima beans, thawed

• 1/2 lb. okra, cut into 1/3” thick slices

• 3/4 lb. cherry tomatoes (1 pint), halved

• 2 Tbsp. cider vinegar, or to taste

• 1/4 cup chopped fresh basil

Directions:

1. Cook bacon in a large skillet over moderate heat until crisp. Drain on paper towels, leaving fat in skillet.

2. Add onion to skillet and cook over moderate heat, stirring, until softened. Add garlic and cook, stirring, 1 minute. Stir in corn, jalapeño, lima beans, okra, and tomatoes and cook, stirring, until vegetables are tender, about 7 minutes. Stir in vinegar, basil, and salt and pepper to taste.

3. Serve with bacon crumbled over.

A recruitment agency had to take down its internet want ad that read: “Our returning client is seeking an exceptional and high-

ly experienced Dog Nanny to provide toptier care for their two beloved dogs. They are truly looking for someone at the top of their field who can ensure the overall wellbeing, happiness, and safety of their dogs.” The agency said it was overwhelmed by applicants. Perhaps it was because there are too many dog lovers out there. Or, maybe, it was that applicants were moved by the offer of the tidy sum of $127,000 a year.

• “When my sisters and I get together (there are five of us), we each bring a flash drive with about 50 good, recent family pictures. One sister is a technical whiz, and she put all the pictures together and loads them back on the flash drives, labeled with the date. And then we all watch a picture slideshow together and share our stories.” — G.B. in Georgia

• “My mother-in-law has a digital photo frame, and about every six months we send her a new flash drive to plug into the back of it. In the 130-year theatre tradition of Summer Stock, 30 students from a multitude of theatre programs across the valley are coming together to stage “Mean Girls, High School Version.” The production is a collaboration with Palm Springs Unified School District (PSUSD) and Palm Canyon Theatre (PCT).

Cast members from 10 valley schools range in age from 13-19. Sets and costumes will recreate the fictional North Shore High School where Cady Heron (Tori Mendoza) transfers after years of being homeschooled on the African Savanna. Trying to fit into “normal” teenage life in suburban Illinois, Cady finds herself caught in the popularity hierarchy of high school. With a plan to dethrone the Queen Bee, Regina George (Kaiya Treash) and her minions known as The Plastics, Cady is conflicted between enjoying the benefits of status and changing the status quo.

Based on the 2004 “Mean Girls” movie, written by Tina Fey (30 Rock & Saturday

Night Live), the musical made its way to Broadway in 2018, where it was nominated for 12 Tony Awards. “Mean Girls” (Musical) was also written by Fey with music by Jeff Richmond and lyrics by Nell Benjamin. This production is directed by Green with choreography by Se Layne, PCT co-artistic director. With musical direction by Jaci Davis and costume design by Derik Shopinski.
