reached number one on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart. Yoakam had two number-one singles on Hot Country Songs with “Streets of Bakersfield” (a duet with Buck Owens) and “I Sang Dixie” along with 12 additional top-ten hits. He has won two Grammy Awards and one Academy of Country Music award.

Yoakam’s musical style draws from a wide variety of influences including neotraditional country, honky-tonk, Bakersfield sound, bluegrass music, country rock and rockabilly. He is known for his distinctive tenor singing voice, unconventional musical image, the lead guitar work of his longtime producer and bandleader Pete Anderson…and his hip-swinging action.

Yoakam’s success as an entertainment icon has led to his receiving his own Sirius channel named “Bakersfield Beat,” in which he plays his own songs as well as those in the genres of Bakersfield sound, cowpunk and country rock. His music has no doubt had a lasting impact upon American pop music culture.

Interesting facts about watermelon

• Watermelons have been cultivated in Egypt for more than 5,000 years. Egyptians depicted watermelon in drawings on the walls of tombs and even left watermelon with their dead to nourish them as they journeyed through the underworld.

As dismayed as it may be for the “woke” folk among us, the fact is that some 90% of three-toten year old American girls still own one or more Barbie dolls, according to Mattel, the company that introduced the iconic toys 60 years ago. A soon-to-be-released Barbie movie is a sexagenarian tribute to the plaything as is the real-life Malibu Barbie DreamHouse in California, which, for the occasion, is available for a short term via the Airbnb realtors for two-person, two-day stays.

“48N48” These fly boys broke the record

for traversing mainland America, landing in each of the 48 states in less than 48 hours. Delta A350 Capt. Barry Behnfeldt and Aaron Wilson and technician Thomas Twiddy took off in their 1980 PA32R Piper Saratoga and landed in each of the contiguous 48 states from Michigan to Maine. And they made what they called their “48N48” trip not in 48 hours but in a record breaking 44 hours and seven minutes.

An Irish tribute for Dolly Parton In an interview during a visit to Ireland some time ago Dolly Parton declared that she has a love for Ireland. In return, an Irish gathering recently in the town of Listowel in County Kerry drew more than 1,100 participants, all of them dressed up and looking like Dolly. They all wore blonde wigs, cowboy boots and rhinestone-covered costumes. Their aim was to show their love for the Queen of Nashville and to raise funds for Kerry Hospice and Comfort for Chemo Kerry.

Staycation Ideas for Seniors

How do we go on vacation when we can’t afford to travel anywhere? How can any days feel like vacation when we do what we usually do, which is stay home?

The answer lies in that made-up word: “staycation.” The idea is to spend time doing something different without leaving your home area.

One of my favorite ways to unwind and decompress is to unplug the phone and read. I can get 10 free Kindle Unlimited books at a time, more than enough to keep me happy during an unplugged week while I pretend I’m on vacation. With a free-delivery Walmart+ membership ($98 for a year), I can have groceries and snacks delivered to the door.

I’ve already checked the local events calendar, marking off several of interest. That doesn’t mean I’ll go to all of them, but the options are there: a sandwich, no-salt chips and a drink in a chilled to-go-bag and a few relaxing hours at a free local outdoor concert.

One of the events I’m looking for-

ward to is an evening community sing where likely hundreds of people (mostly seniors, I imagine) will get together outdoors to sing the oldies.

On another day I’ll spend some hours at the Louvre in Paris. I won’t actually be there, but close enough with their free virtual tour (www.louvre.fr/ en/online-tours). Do an online search for “museums with virtual tours,” and you’ll find several dozen choices. Zoos, national parks and aquariums have done the same thing.

The opportunities for staycation are many. Want to learn to paint or draw? Order supplies and spend some days hooked up to online art tutorials. Want to write a book? You can get a lot done in an unplugged week. Want to bake a pie? Spend an afternoon first at a pick-your-own fruit farm. A big rule of staycation: Housework and cleaning are not allowed.

Lime chicken with corn and poblano salad

Ingredients Lime Chicken:

• 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil

• 1 cup all-purpose flour

• 1 1/2 teaspoons dried garlic powder

• 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper

• 1 1/2 teaspoons salt

• 3/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

• Zest of 1 lime

• 8 chicken thighs

Ingredients Corn and Poblano Salad:

• 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil

• 2 poblano peppers, diced

• 2 garlic cloves, minced

• One 14-ounce can corn kernels

• 4 scallions, minced

• Juice of 2 limes

• 1/3 cup chopped fresh cilantro

• Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Directions:

1. Preheat the oven to 400°F.

2. Heat olive oil in a 9-inch oven-safe skillet over medium heat.

3. In a medium bowl, whisk the flour with the garlic powder, cayenne, salt, pepper and lime zest to combine. Dredge the chicken thighs in the flour mixture to coat generously.

4. Place the chicken, skin side down, in the hot oil. Place the skillet in the oven and roast until the skin is golden brown and the chicken is fully cooked, 30 to 35 minutes.

5. In a medium skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the poblano peppers and sauté until tender, 5 minutes. Add the garlic and sauté until fragrant, 1 minute more.

6. Then, add the corn, scallions, lime juice and cilantro; toss to combine. Season with salt and pepper.

‘Sinatra in Palm Springs’ documentary returns

“Sinatra in Palm Springs,” the popular award-winning documentary from director Leo Zahn returns for a special summer run, every weekend through September 3 at the Palm Springs Cultural Center (2300 East Baristo Road, Palm Springs).

The film captures the spirit of the Sinatra era and pays tribute to the unique lifestyle of Sinatra’s Palm Springs and Rancho Mirage.

The documentary has delighted locals since its premiere in 2018 at Modernism Week fea-

turing more than 50 clips from his movies and television appearances, major sequences dedicated to historic restaurants Sinatra frequented as well as exclusive interviews with Barbara Sinatra, Mel Haber, Tom Dreesen, Nelda Linsk, Bruce Fessier, Trini Lopez, Michael Fletcher and many others who knew and lived and played with Frank Sinatra.

Tenor Maximo Marcuso makes CVRep debut

International tenor sensation Maximo

Marcuso makes his Coachella Valley Repertory debut on Thursday, July 20 in CVRep’s 2023 Summer Cabaret Series. It will be a rare experience to hear Marcuso’s glorious voice in an intimate venue in which he can connect with his audience in conversation as well as songs that have special meaning

to him. His voice and his music continue to resound in our minds as beautiful and heartfelt memories.

On July 13, 1930, France defeated Mexico 4-1 and the United States defeated Belgium 3-0 in the first-ever World Cup football matches, played simultaneously in host city Montevideo, Uruguay. The World Cup has since become the world’s most watched sporting event.

On July 14, 1882, gunfighter John Ringo was found dead in Turkey Creek Canyon, Arizona. Romanticized as a supposedly Shakespeare-quoting fellow of honor and courage whose wit was as quick as his gun, Ringo was not formally educated and came from a struggling, working-class Indiana family, but cultivated the image of a refined gentleman.

On July 15, 1986, Columbia Records dropped Johnny Cash from its roster after a 26-year partnership, due to changing tastes in country music and declining album sales. At the time, Cash hadn’t made it into the Top 10 with a single since releasing “The Baron” in 1981.

On July 16, 2007, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 struck central Japan, killing nine people and damaging hundreds of homes, as well as one of the world’s largest nuclear power plants, which had a small electrical fire and leaked of radioactive air and water into the environment. The incident prompted increased safety in power plants over concern of a repeated scare.

On July 17, 1941, New York Yankees center fielder Joe DiMaggio’s hitting streak of 56 consecutive games ended as 67,468 people watched him at bat against the Cleveland Indians. His record still stands, though Pete Rose came the closest to matching it when he hit in 44 consecutive games in 1978.

On July 18, 1984, 21 people were shot to death and 19 more were injured in a San Ysidro, California, McDonald’s by James Oliver Huberty, who told his wife as he was leaving his house with three guns that he was “hunting humans.” The fatal spree ended only when Huberty was fatally shot by a SWAT team sniper.

On July 19, 1879, Doc Holliday committed his first murder, killing Mike Gordon, who’d tried to persuade a girl working at Holliday’s New Mexico saloon to run away with him. When she declined, the frustrated Gordon began shooting into the saloon from the street, and Holliday returned fire, dropping him with one bullet.
