Combines rockabilly and a Bakersfield beat to define his own brand of country music

Country megastar Dwight Yoakam’s new album, “Swimmin’ Pools, Movie Stars…” seems tailor-made for his upcoming show in the Coachella Valley. Audience members are invited to take a journey with songs, sights and stories of country music as depicted by Yoakam live on stage.

The singer-songwriter, actor and film director has sold 25 million albums worldwide. His cool hat-topped visage and confident cowboy-boot shuffle make it apparent why he’s garnered 12 gold albums, nine platinum or multi-platinum albums and nearly 40 singles on the Billboard charts. Hit songs (originals and covers) include “Little Sister,” “You’re the One,” “Suspicious Minds,” “It Only Hurts When I Cry,” “A Thousand Miles from Nowhere,” “Fast As You,” “Please, Please Baby,” “Little Ways,” “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” “I Want You to Want Me,” “Things Change” and numerous others.

He first achieved mainstream attention in 1986 with the release of his debut album “Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc., Etc.”. Yoakam gained greater popularity in the late 1980s onward with a total of ten studio albums. His first three albums, which also included “Hillbilly Deluxe” and “Buenas Noches from a Lonely Room,” all reached number one on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart. Yoakam had two number-one singles on Hot Country Songs with “Streets of Bakersfield” (a duet with Buck Owens) and “I Sang Dixie” along with 12 additional top-ten hits. He has won two Grammy Awards and one Academy of Country Music award.

Yoakam’s musical style draws from a wide variety of influences including neotraditional country, honky-tonk, Bakersfield sound, bluegrass music, country rock and rockabilly. He is known for his distinctive tenor singing voice, unconventional musical image, the lead guitar work of his longtime producer and bandleader Pete Anderson…and his hipswinging action.

Yoakam’s success as an entertainment icon has led to his receiving his own Sirius channel named “Bakersfield Beat,” in which he plays his own songs as well as those in the genres of Bakersfield sound, cowpunk and country rock. His music has no doubt had a lasting impact upon American pop music culture.

Jazz in the Pines concert series builds a bridge between the community and the next generation of jazz artists

The well-respected Idyllwild Arts Academy brings the 29th annual Jazz in the Pines fundraiser with an exciting lineup of live performances and workshops.

Artists and students will entertain on the school’s 205-acre campus as well as select venues in Idyllwild, including Ferro, Middle Ridge Winery, the Grand Idyllwild Lodge, Creekstone Lodge, Harvey House, and Cafe Aroma.

The event is again curated by New York Times-featured jazz vocalist Rose Colella. Headliners include Grammy award-winning trumpeter John Daversa and Marshall Hawkins’ Seahawk MOJO, along with Euphoria Brass Band, Joshua White, Sherry

Williams, Yve Evans, Rose Colella, Tom Hynes, Dan St. Marseille, Bob Boss, Frank Fontaine, Tina Raymond & The Idyllwild Arts All-Star Student Jazz Combo.

The festival features 13 venues hosting 27 public performances, master classes, book readings/signings, and live podcast recordings, as well as an interview by Idyllwild Arts President Pamela Jordan with world-renowned artists for her podcast, “One World. One Idyllwild. The Series.”

The new Jazz in the Pines Festival and Student Clinic restores the original vision of festival co-founder Dr. Marshall Hawkins, the legendary bassist, beloved teacher, and walking treasure trove of jazz.

Palm Springs Rewinds presents Summer of Scorsese, sharing vivid stories and masterclass films

The latest installment in the Palm Springs Cultural Center’s Palm Springs Rewinds film retrospective series is the Summer of Scorsese. This celluloid celebration will screen the must-see movies of legendary director Martin Scorsese whose deep understanding of film history and technique distinguishes him in his craft.

Palm Springs Rewinds is an ongoing series that showcases the definitive work of acclaimed contemporary directors. The Summer of Scorsese follows the highly successful retrospectives of Terry Gilliam, Quentin Tarantino, Wes Anderson, Tim Burton and the Coen brothers. With a career spanning more than

six decades, Martin Scorsese is at the forefront of great American filmmakers and is widely regarded as one of the most influential directors of all time. His films feature unforgettable characters, breathtaking cinematography and groundbreaking editing techniques, making him a master of cinema. From the gritty streets of New York City in “Taxi Driver” (7/1) and “Mean Streets” to the glitz and glamour of Las Vegas in “Casino” (9/16), Scorsese’s films transport audiences to worlds both familiar and foreign, capturing scenes with unparalleled authenticity.

Coachella Valley Rep (CVRep) continues its 2023 Summer Cabaret Series in July. All shows at 7 p.m.

July 13: Flamenco Company Miguel Bernal. In their classic flamenco costumes and dancing to the raw flamenco music, Bernal’s company performs this revered art with heat, passion and seduction. Bernal started his professional dance career as a child, performing for many Latin and Hollywood celebrities. He studied classical and flamenco dance with renowned artists in Spain, Mexico and Los Angeles. In the U.S., he was a featured performer with the Jose Greco and Nana Lorca Dance Company.

July 20: Maximo Marcuso. The internationally acclaimed tenor thrills audiences with his beautiful and diverse repertoire of operatic areas, classical crossovers, Broadway standards and contemporary favorites. His recent engagements include European venues in Berlin, Frankfurt and Rome, as well as New York, Boston, Chicago, Atlantic City, LA and Las Vegas. He also has performed with the LA Philharmonic Ensemble, Pasadena Symphony and Pops Orchestra, Santa Monica and Nevada symphonies, to name just a few major musical organizations. July 27: Christia Mantzke. This Broadway performer and Billboard Award-winning EMI recording artist sings some of her favorite songs from productions over her past 30 years as an entertainer. PCT’s Summer Camp

More than a dozen theatre professionals will mentor youth in performing and stagecraft for Palm Canyon Theatre’s annual Summer Kid’s Camp on a weekly basis through July 21, Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. $150 per week.

The camp includes instruction in acting, singing, dancing, makeup, set design, props, costuming, stage combat, improv and more.

Participants will be divided into age-specific groups. Each week has a special theme, including Western, Halloween, Princess, Super Heroes and more.

Summer Conservatory Classes

Coachella Valley Repertory’s Conservatory has announced the 2023 summer schedule of classes, running through August 29.

The summer session curriculum includes Acting Technique, Going Solo: The Art of the One-Person Show, The I Hate Shakespeare Shakespeare Workshop, Empowered Improv, Improv Essentials, Acting Pro: Mastering the Audition, Movement for Actors: Athletes of Emotion and Improv FUN-damentals.

The instructors include Broadway veteran and a featured artist in CVRep’s 2023 Summer Cabaret Series, Alix Korey, Jeanette Knight, who has appeared at CVRep, Melanie Blue, who has directed at CVRep, CVRep Company Manager Kudra Wagner and Howard Shangraw.

Classes are offered in two age categories, young people ages 8 through high school and adults 16 and above. Scholarships are available.

Celebrate red, white, and blue with these local events and activities for Fourth of July in the desert. A Fourth of July PreParty will take place July 1 & 2 at 7 p.m. exclusively at Agua Caliente Casino Cathedral City. A hot dog eating contest will take place July 2, and a roller-skating rink will be available both days from 7 to 9 p.m. for all ages, and 9 p.m. to 12 a.m. for 21+ only. Pricing per session is $10 per skating session and $5 skate rental.

This pre-party leads to an epic Fourth of July at Agua Caliente Casinos, where guests can celebrate with DJs, giveaways, promotions, and mouthwatering dining specials. Don’t miss the 9th Annual Fireworks Extravaganza at Agua Caliente Rancho Mirage on July 4. Parking opens at 3 p.m. and the drive-in experience starts at 7 p.m.

A Fireworks Spectacular will also take place July 1 from 6 to 10 p.m. at Mission Springs Park in Desert Hot Springs. Fireworks start at 9:15 p.m. and the free event features food and music.

The City of Coachella will hold an Independence Day Celebration at Bagdouma Park on July 1, from 6 to 9 p.m. Festivities include fireworks, games, local food vendors, live music, and fun for the whole family.

The City of Palm Desert will mark July 4 with a festive celebration highlighted by a concert and fireworks at Civic Center Park. The evening’s events officially kick off at 7:30 p.m. at the park’s amphitheater with a free concert of pop favorites. At 9 p.m., the sky will light up with a spectacular 20-minute-long fireworks display synchronized to patriotic-themed songs.

Tortoise Rock Casino in Twentynine Palms will host a 4 th of July Spectacular at 6
