At the south end of the valley, your foursome can tee off at Chardonnay Golf Club or Eagle Vines Golf Club, both located in American Canyon. VINEYARD BY ASHLEY CHARLTON How do you define balance in wine? Is it the aromas, the structure, the acidity? You can argue that great wine, and balance is made in the vineyard. This is what you find at Blue Farm Wines. Tucked away on a side road in southwest Sonoma is a picturesque blue Victorian home surrounded by vineyards, willow trees and a pond, a true picture of harmony. Anne Moller-Racke is the owner, winemaker, viticulturist, and wearer of many hats at Blue Farm Wines. She originally moved to California from Germany to work a harvest at the famed Buena Vista Vineyard in 1981. After an incredibly successful career, she decided to purchase seven acres to plant her own vineyard. Those seven acres not only became her home, but the home of Blue Farm Wines as well. “Here in the US, there is such spirit.” Anne said. “In the 1980s and ’90s it was really that new frontier and you could grow any variety, any spacing. As long as you did it well, the market supported it. In the US, we are not as restricted by the laws and rules as in Europe, which gives us more room for creativity.” Anne Moller-Racke is a winemaker who is as comfortable in the cellar as she is in the vineyard. “It’s about balancing the plant and that block within the vineyard. The little touches that you can’t do with a machine. It’s all done by hand. I don’t even like leaf pulling with a machine. It can damage the skin, the berries are so tender at this growing stage. But wine is not only grown in the vineyard, it is made in the cellar. Understanding your site, you know how extractive or gentle you want to handle the fruit. One size does not fit all. We have a tailored treatment in the vineyard and the cellar to achieve balance in a wine. Pinot Noir is fickle, and expresses the work so clearly.” Viticulture can sound romantic, but it is much more than frolicking through the fields. Looking at the biological stage of the grapes in each vineyard is incredibly important to the

final wine. “That is why you want to see where your phenology is. You need to have an idea so you can make better farming decisions. There is so much within that. If each berry is uneven from cluster to cluster, then suddenly all you have is noise instead of them all singing the same note. Once you tune it, then you get concentration in the wine. That is where the work is – in terms of really being committed.” In some regions of the world, winemakers will blend other varieties together to make a finished wine. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are a common example. With Pinot Noir however, it is more common to blend different clones. Throughout history, Pinot Noir is known to naturally mutate. Within one vineyard, you can often find multiple clones. “Blending the clones is to have certain traits. For example, some clones are more perfumed or floral. Whereas the Swan clone is more textural. Some, like the 777 and 667 are more tannic and give structure. I planted my vineyard with the clones to make one wine. Using the clones is similar to paint, it’s all red but different shades of red. By blending the clones, you can create a more complete wine. Sometimes there is just one clone that doesn’t need anything else. It has this clear, beautiful voice and wants to stand alone. Sometimes they want to be part of the orchestra, and sometimes you have a lead opera singer.” It is common to hear of people comparing wines from California to France, and Burgundy specifically. Anne has a unique perspective on this. “Certainly, the home of Pinot Noir is Burgundy. I’ve asked the question: what if California would have made it first? How would the French be making their wine now? I find it interesting that we always look to who did it first, they get to write the first chapter on it.” “I want to make wines that are delicious. I cannot make Burgundy. I can make my wine. What I like about wine is the abstract. I like good acidity, structure and mouth feel. I don’t want my wines to be shrill, but I don’t want them to be jammy or diluted either. We have different soils and a different climate than France. I think we should each have our own identity. It is as if you tried to compare Picasso and Monet. Discover ‘The Taste of Coombsville’ This may be Napa’s hottest new AVA, but it’s also the coolest: literally. BY LAURA NESS

With its proximity to the maritime influence of the San Pablo Bay, Coombsville was once considered “too cool” for Cab. Not so, says John Caldwell, owner of one of the largest vineyards in the 11,000-acre AVA, “Cabernet Sauvignon exemplifies the ‘taste of Coombsville.’ Caldwell declares. “As rockstar winemaker Andy Erickson says, ‘Coombsville wine speaks of place.’” Established in 2011, Coombsville sits at the southern edge of Napa Valley, receiving the cooling effects of the wind and fog earlier in the day, bringing down average high temperatures by as much as 10°F during summer months. During the winter, the warmer-than-air water helps reduce the chances of ruinous frost. But the area’s distinctively intense and acid-blessed wines owe much of their unique character to the soils of an extinct volcano. Let’s visit some of the Coombsville winery players and places you should know. Among Coombsville’s biggest fans is the legendary Warren Winiarski, whose winning of the 1976 Judgment of Paris put Napa on the map. His 85-acre Arcadia Vineyards supplies Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes for Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars. “My main focus is getting wines of Coombsville to reach their potential,” says Winiarski. “Coombsville was considered too cool for Cab when I arrived in the 1970s. But that’s the western side of the valley. On the east side, we don’t get the full sweep of the maritime influence.” He’s working with clones and trellising to create more perfect, uniform ripeness from berry to berry. “Uniformity helps you get to the perfect ripeness that creates a complete story.” John Kongsgaard of Konsgaard Wines was called “The Chardonnay Master from Cabernet Country,” a decade ago by Wine Spectator. “When I planted our first Chardonnay

vines in Coombsville in 1975, there couldn’t have been many,” says Kongsgaard, who interned with Winiarski at Stag’s Leap. He admits surprise that his friend and neighbor, André Tchelistcheff, made the suggestion. “Our site has very shallow volcanic soil, which strongly restricts the vines vigor and crop level. Across several selections of Chardonnay that we grow, our clusters are less than half the weight of ‘normal’ Chardonnay.” He makes a single vineyard Chardonnay, called “The Judge,” named for his late father who was the Judge in Napa. “I really only know two sites, ours, on a unique volcanic hill separating Napa from Coombsville, and Warren Winiarski’s, at the base of Mt. George (1877 ft). The two splendid wines are related in intensity. I think the magic boils down to Coombsville having very complex volcanic soil in a very cool part of the valley.” Taste the magic by appointment. Ackerman Family Wines began when high-tech marketing consultant, Lauren Ackerman, purchased the 11-acre Stonehaven Vineyard in 1994 and transformed it into the first certified organic vineyard in Coombsville. In 2010, she acquired a faded Queen Anne in downtown Napa, built in 1888, and restored what is now the Ackerman Heritage House to its former splendor. Here, you can taste wines like the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon (100%) made by Winemaker Leo Tellez, whose grandfather and father worked for Charles Krug and Robert Mondavi respectively. French Laundry chefs serve exquisite meals for private parties and weddings, and hold cooking classes in the kitchen. Book a tasting in the carriage house and courtyard, or enjoy the grandeur of their sumptuous monthly teas, served on Victorian era china and linens. The inhouse tea bend is fittingly called Lady Ackerman. Since 2005, winemaker Dawnine Dyer has made wine from the highly renowned Meteor Vineyard, which was planted in 1999 on the slopes of Mt. George. She sources 20% of the 22-acre vineyard to make Perseid (a mix of Cabernet Clone 4, 7 and 337, 70% new) and Special Family Reserve, 100% Cabernet Clone 7, planted on St. George rootstock, and aged in 100% new French. “The wines are characteristically a deep, bluehued color with concentrated bright red fruits in the aromas and flavors,” says Dyer. “To me, the crowning joy of the wines is the structure. Round tannins with great volume supported by a firm acidity. Rich wines that are proving to have great longevity.” Much of the Meteor fruit goes to other chic brands, like DuMol, Etude, Favia and Arietta.

Favia is the brand of rockstar winemaker, Andy Erickson (Screaming Eagle, Ovid, Delle Valle) and his wife Annie Favia, a viticulturist originally from Connecticut, who trained under John Kongsgaard, Cathy Corison and David Abreu. In 2014, they resurrected an old stonehouse built in 1886 by Antonio Carbone, an Italian immigrant from Genoa, who established Coombsville’s first winery. It is now their home and production facility, surrounded by fruit trees, olive groves, and vineyards. They produce a 100% Cabernet from Coombsville, and taste by appointment Monday through Friday. Faust wines are a testament to the concentration, yet lifted nature of the estate vineyard planted by the Huneeus family in 1998 on the site of a former dairy. The Pact is pure 100% Cabernet aged in 40% new French for two years, exhibiting intense blue and black fruit and a daring acid profile that typifies Coombsville. Taste Thursday through Monday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the 19th century Victorian Faust Haus in St. Helena. Winegrower John Caldwell of Caldwell Vineyards tells us what makes Coombsville special. “Location, location, location. I have nine red varieties and every one makes wonderful wines. My favorites are CS, CF, Merlot, and Carmenere. But some years, like 2019, the Petit Verdot and Tannat stand out. Cabernet Sauvignon exemplifies the ‘taste of Coombsville.’ As Andy Erickson says, ‘Coombsville wine speaks of place.’” Unique experiences at Caldwell include tastings in the cave ($130pp), which features 24 unique wines paired with cheese and charcuterie, and unforgettable tales: some of them mostly true. Arietta, founded by famed auctioneer Fritz Hatton and Caren Frutig Hatton, in partnership with winemaker John Kongsgaard and his wife Maggy in 1996, is based on a love of fine wine and classical music. Andy Erickson crafts the musicthemed Bordeaux-style blends, including the Arietta “88 Keys” Cabernet Sauvignon, a two-barrel lot from Meteor Vineyard that sleeps a bit longer in oak and wakes up to rave reviews. Their Generations Tasting is oriented to “next gen” family members (over 21) of subscribers interested in wine.

The wine labels of Porter Family Vineyards draw inspiration from the fossilized footprint of a sandpiper discovered in the volcanic ash-covered former shoreline of their 14-acre vineyard while digging the winery cave. Primarily focused on Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, they also produce a Sandpiper Red (Merlot & Cab), a 100% Merlot, and a Cave Dweller’s Blend. Private experiences are offered mostly to club members and their guests; however, tastings can be arranged by calling 707-927-0765. Scalon Cellars is a partnership between Jesus Espinoza, Vineyard Manager, and Cruz Calderon, who met at Caldwell Cellars when Calderon was building the famous Caldwell cave. Julien Fayard crafts wines in that very cellar from the vines Jesus planted, among them a pure Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Tastings by appointment. Palmaz Vineyards has one of the largest caves and vineyards in Coombsville, with plantings ranging from 300 feet above sea level, to the top of Mount George at 1,400 feet. Tour the multilevel cave and then enjoy a seated tasting of wines paired with gourmet delicacies.

California Artisan Cheese Festival Held March 24-26, 2023, the festival offers many ways to enjoy local cheese including farm tours, pairing and tasting seminars with world-class cheese experts, a cheese crawl and the ever-popular Marketplace California’s premier cheese festival, taking place March 24-26, will host the Marketplace at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds, seminars at various wineries, a cheese crawl at The Barlow in Sebastopol, farm and cheese producer tours throughout Sonoma and Marin Counties, and beyond. For the first time since 2019, the beloved Festival is back for three full days of cheese tasting, education and celebration, bringing together artisan cheesemakers, farmers, chefs, brewers, winemakers, distillers and cheese enthusiasts. Throughout the weekend, guests will have the opportunity to experience new, limited-production, and rare artisan cheeses, and learn about the art of making cheese — all while supporting California farmers and cheesemakers. These public events include farm and producer tours, cheese tastings, pairings, educational seminars and demonstrations, a cheese crawl, and the Sunday Marketplace. This walk-around tasting event will be similar to a bar crawl, but focused on cheese pairings with local sips and nibbles from restaurants, distilleries, breweries and more. Sunday’s Artisan Cheese Tasting & Marketplace will take place at the vast Grace Pavilion at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds. For those who’d like to get the inside track and early entry into the Marketplace, the Bubbles + Bites is a pre-marketplace light breakfast with author and radio personality Clark Wolf. Wolf will be giving tips on how to best experience everything the Marketplace has to offer as attendees enjoy breakfast bites and local bubbles. NAPA VALLEY MUSTARD CELEBRATION Legend has it that the first mustard plants arrived in Napa Valley in the 1800s when Jesuit priests traveled through California and scattered the mustard seeds throughout the valley.

2019 KELLER ESTATE BLANC DES BLANCS Keller Estate Winery, Petaluma This is a tribute to Keller’s original chardonnay block planted in 1989. After the 2019 season, this 30-yearold block was pulled out and is nwo being replanted with new vines. The last vintage of "La Cruz Vineyard" was a gorgeous season, with good rain, perfect temperatures, and a cool fall. This delicious sparkling wine was made by the Methode Champenoise from 100% chardonnay. While this wine can be enjoyed by itself as an apéritif, it is also perfect with fresh oysters and other shellfish, crab cakes, ceviche, and grilled sea bass. bASH Returns to CIA St. Helena on April 1 12th year for Appellation St. Helena's Wine Tasting & Food Pairing Competition Appellation St. Helena (ASH) invites guests to its 12th annual bASH on Saturday, April 1 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at The Culinary Institute of America Greystone (2555 Saint Helena Highway, St. Helena). bASH is an annual wine and food pairing competition where the wines from twenty ASH member wineries will be paired with savory bites prepared by teams of “rising star” students at the CIA and professional chefs. Tickets are $150 per person and must be purchased in advance. The participating wineries are Battuello Vineyards, Calafia Wines, Corison Winery, Denali Estate Vineyards, Ehlers Estate, HALL Wines, Lithology, Mending Wall Winery, Pellet Estate, Raymond Vineyards, Revana Family Vineyards, Salvestrin Winery, Spottswoode Winery, St. Helena Winery, Taplin Cellars, Vineyard 29 and Young Inglewood. Attendees will vote with tokens and ASH will be awarding the PEOPLE'S CHOICE BEST PAIRING to the top three student teams and a professional team. “Each year bASH is a sell-out event. Appellation St. Helena St. Helena has the distinction of being the birthplace of Napa Valley’s commercial wine industry with Dr. Crane’s cellar founded in 1859, David Fulton’s in 1860 and Charles Krug’s in 1861. The St. Helena American Viticultural Area, or appellation, was officially approved in 1995 and in 2004, the vintners who had worked together to get the AVA approved established a group to promote the growing region, today called Appellation St. Helena. The group focuses on promoting the quality of grapes grown and wines produced in the St. Helena AVA. Appellation St. Helena is comprised of roughly 12,000 acres, of which approximately 6,800 are planted to grapes, more than any other AVA in the Napa Valley. More than 400 different vineyards are located within the appellation and the Association has 64 members. The boundaries form an hourglass shape, and the middle section represents the narrowest width in the Napa Valley, where the Mayacamas and Vaca Mountain ranges nearly meet. The AVA is a mosaic of alluvial fans and 21 different soil types. The soils here are created from centuries of erosion of run-off from mountain hillsides and the Napa River and its ancient tributaries. Grape growing in the St. Helena appellation dates back to the Mexican land grants in the 1840s when General Vallejo gave Edward Bale a wedding gift of property. Bale and his bride promptly planted vineyard on their property. By 1880, over 100 people were making wine in St. Helena. While many types of grapes excel in St. Helena, the most frequently cultivated are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah, Zinfandel, and Sauvignon Blanc. Sip-worthy whites for almost-spring weather. Papapietro Perry Winery 2021 Peters Vineyard Chardonnay, $58 This 2021 Chardonnay from Papapietro is highly aromatic with notes of green apple, crushed almonds, and ripe stone fruit. True to the Peters Vineyard, this expression offers excellent acidity on the palate with notes of juicy peach and baked apples. The wine sees 11 months in new and one- to twoyear-old French oak barrels, bringing with it a subtle nutmeg character. It’s a beautifully balanced Chardonnay thatremains rich and crisp all at once.

Imagery Estate 2021 Winemaker’s Palate, $32 The 2021 Winemaker’s Palate from Imagery Estate is a lovely white blend of 52% Sauvignon Blanc, 31% Viognier, 9% Albariño, and 8% Muscat. The Viognier and Albariño comprise an intoxicating bouquet of honeysuckle, peach, and white flowers. On the palate, the Sauvignon Blanc shines bright with flavors of lemon zest mixed with ripe stone fruit. It’s a fun blend with lots of food-pairing potential.

Gary Farrell Winery 2019 Bacigalupi Chardonnay, $60 Bacigalupi is a much-loved vineyard in Russian River Valley and for good reason. The site produces fantastic expressions of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir with quintessential varietal characteristics. The 2019 Bacigalupi Chardonnay from Gary Farrell shows off a medium-bodied palate with notes of white peach, green apple, and Meyer lemon. There’s a minerality here that can’t be denied, and the texture strikes an agreeable balance of fullness cut by bright acidity.

Far Niente WInery 2021 Estate Bottled Chardonnay, $73 When it comes to Napa Valley Chardonnay, Far Niente is an iconic estate upon which Chardonnay lovers can always rely. The 2021 Estate Bottled expression comes from the Coombsville appellation and gives classic Napa Chardonnay vibes with its ripe fruit framed by crisp acidity and round texture. Heady notes of sweet Meyer lemon and toasted almonds abound on the bouquet, while the palate dishes up flavors of citrus, ripe melon, and wet stones. It’s a lovely, well-made Chardonnay with a lot of character.

Tips on Wine Tasting Guidelines and Etiquette to Enhance Your Experience Visiting a winery tasting room may sometimes be intimidating, especially if you are not used to wine tasting and aren’t quite sure what to expect. Following the guidelines and etiquette tips below will help enhance your experience as you travel through wine country. Due to Covid-19, there have been changes to the wine tasting adventures. So please before you go: • Plan in advance. Most wineries are now by appointment and in some cases “as space is available” (should you not have made reservations). Don’t be shy to ask at the last minute, but understand they may be full or be reserved. • Understand that there may be a time limit • A sk about the different tasting experiences and costs. • If you plan to “share” a tasting, ask if it is okay. You may still be charged per person. • If this applies, ask if the winery is dog/child friendly. • Be sure to adhere to individual, local and state guidelines in place at the time (i.e. mask wearing until seated, etc.) • Be flexible • Don’t be self-conscious to share a tasting (*if appropriate) with your companion – it’s not looked on as being cheap, in fact, it’s smart.

• Don’t worry if you think you don’t know good wine. “Good wine” is what you like. Period. • You don’t have to finish the glass. You are tasting, not drinking – use the dump bucket. Those little sips add up fast. • You don’t have to like everything poured. The reason you are tasting is to see what you do and don’t like. • Take time to smell the roses, or wine! Swirl the wine in the bowl of the glass then take your time, put your nose into the bowl of the glass … and inhale to experience the bouquet. See what fragrances you can identify: Earthy? Lemon? Honeysuckle? Cherry? Tobacco? It’s okay if you don’t identify any of those things, with time and tasting you will! • Remember the five “S’s” of wine tasting: See (the wine in the glass), Swirl, Smell, Sip and Savor. (Take a small sip. Let the liquid surround your taste buds, what flavors can you identify)? • A sk questions! Remember … there are no stupid questions. You are there to enjoy and learn, and your server is there to help. • Don’t feel pressured to buy a bottle or to join a wine club, (however, if the tasting is free, or if you have a private tasting with a winemaker, it is good form to purchase a bottle). • Leave a tip if you have had a nice experience ($5-$20 is a general rule, depending on the type of tasting). • Don’t wear scents into a tasting room (cologne or perfume), and best not to wear white! • A sk your server to recommend their favorite wineries to visit. • Seek smaller, out-of-the-way, boutique wineries. • Eat breakfast before you leave for the day and … hydrate – hydrate – hydrate! Hint: Drink one glass of water for each glass of wine.

• Bring something to snack on such as crackers, breadsticks or a baguette, (but inquire in advance if outside food is okay to bring in). Take time for lunch. When picnicking at a winery, never bring wine from another winery

GOOD TO KNOW •A cidity: The level of natural acids in a wine that give it freshness and crispness on the palate. • American Viticultural Area (AVA): A governmentapproved wine-growing region whose geological and climatic conditions create wines of distinction. A specific appellation of origin. •B ody: A term used to describe the weight of a wine on the palate. •B ouquet: A term for the fragrance of a wine developed after it has been aged. Sometimes used interchangeably with “aroma,” which is technically the fragrance of a wine before aging.

•B rix: A grape ripeness scale, used primarily in the U.S., that measures solids (sugars) inside the juice of a grape.

• Don’t try to do too much. In general, three to four wineries will fill your day. • If possible have a designated driver (or use a driving service). If staff feels you have had enough to drink they may refuse service, it’s for your own well-being. • Trust your palate. Don’t worry if you don’t like what your friends or companions like. •C ap: The top surface of the must, where solids accumulate and are then pushed back down (punched down) into the juice to increase skin contact. •C rush: Harvest season that starts with picking grapes and ends months later with the transfer of wine to barrel. •C uvée: A Champagne house’s best offering, usually made from the first pressing of grapes; A •E state-bottled: The wine was under the control of the producer, start to finish.

•F ermentation: The transformation of grape juice into wine as sugar plus yeast convert to alcohol and carbon dioxide (and heat). • Finish: The impression a wine leaves on the palate after swallowing or spitting. •L ees: Dead yeast cells from fermentation that settle at the bottom of a barrel or tank. When stirred in the wine, as done during the aging of Chardonnay, lees add body and creaminess. •L egs: Streams of wine that run down the inside wall of a wine glass. Narrow, fast-moving legs generally indicate low alcohol content and light body, while wide, slow legs usually mean richness and higher alcohol. •M aceration: A time period that allows grape skins to make contact with grape juice, usually before fermentation begins, in order to develop deeper color in the finished wine. •M eritage: The unique American term for a Bordeaux-style blended red wine made in the U.S. from two or more of the five classic red grapes of Bordeaux. Not more than 90% of a single grape can make up a wine labeled as Meritage. •M ust: The mixture of unfermented grape juice with the solids from skins, stems and seeds of the grapes. •N ose: A term to describe how a wine smells, sometimes used in place of “aroma.”

• Reserve: Term used by a producer that usually indicates a wine ranked among their highest tier of quality. •S ediment: Residue accumulated during extended aging of a bottle of wine. Red wine sediment is formed by color pigments, tannin molecules and tartrates. White wine can sometimes show sediment of tartrates that appear as crystals. •S ulfites: Chemical compounds of sulfur that act as a preservative in wine.

•T annin: A primary component in red wine, it is a chemical compound (phenolic) developed in wine when fermenting juice makes extended contact with skins, seeds and stems; also added to wine as it ages in contact with oak. At an elevated level, tannin gives wine a dryness on the palate and causes the mouth to pucker (astringency), but when balanced with other components it provides the necessary structure that gives texture and grip.
