MALBEC Celebrate World Malbec Day, April 17

O

nce referred to as “the black wine of Cahors” in France, Malbec is one of the five Bordeaux varieties that include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Primarily used as a blending grape in Bordeaux blends, it never surfaced as a top French wine due to the grape’s poor resistance to French weather and pests and found it’s main home in Mendoza, Argentina where it was planted by order of the mayor in 1868 by a French botanist. Though presently very popular in Argentina, Malbec also makes its home as a top-rate California varietal. Prior to Prohibition in the United States, Malbec was a significant varietal in California and was used mainly for bulk wine production. After Prohibition, and much later in the mid-1990s, the grape gained more popularity as a component of the American “Meritage” Bordeaux-style blends. Though there are many producers that make single varietal Malbec wines, the grape is still mostly used for blending. In California, the American Viticultural Areas (AVA) with the most plantings of Malbec include Sonoma Valley, Napa Valley, Alexander Valley and the Central Coast. These regions have pockets of hot climates with high elevations where the Malbec grape flourishes the best. Other regions in California with some planting of Malbec include Lodi, El Dorado and Fair Play in the Sierra Foothills, many areas in the Central Coast and Yorkville Highlands in Mendocino to name a few. The best Malbecs have a lifted acidity and smooth tannins and yet, some Malbec can be a bit rough around the edges with it’s added spice and smokey notes which makes it a different wine from it’s elegant and polished Bordeaux brother, Merlot. That being said, Malbec takes a strong position as an excellent wine choice that complements many occasions and food pairings.

16

The five Bordeaux varieties include: • Cabernet Sauvignon • Merlot • Malbec • Cabernet Franc • Petit Verdot Characteristics of California Malbec Malbec from California offers fruit flavors of blackberry, plum and black cherry. The more subtle flavors of milk chocolate, violet flowers, leather and cocoa are o en present. A sweet tobacco finish will depend on the amount of oak aging. Typically Malbec is aged in oak anywhere from six months to a year. The distinguishing quality of Malbec that sets it apart from all other wines is its color. Malbec has a purple color with a magenta-tinged rim. It’s the tell-tale sign that the wine is Malbec. Because of this inky violet color it is o en blended with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon to create the a lovely Claret.

WINE COUNTRY THIS MONTH

Malbec is an excellent wine choice that complements many occasions and food pairings.

Malbec is a big, bold red wine that tips toward the higher end of the scale for alcohol, acidity and tannin content which makes it a very food-friendly pairing partner. The flavor elements of black cherry and blackberry fruits along with fig-like chocolate and a unique smoke, pepper and tobacco spice allows for this varietal wine to pair well with gamey dishes like roasted and stewed beef, braised lamb, mushrooms, herbs and sausage. Malbec holds up well with meats and a recurring theme for pairing Malbec and food absolutely includes meat, as well as spice. For example, an herbed roasted beef tenderloin with black pepper and marjoram spice is a happy marriage of protein, fat and tannin with a strong round and full finish. The fruitiness in Malbec also complements more earthy meat cuts such as buffalo burgers and venison. Malbec is a particularly nice wine to pair with spicy ethnic cuisines and spice-laden sauces. Some tasty examples include the sweet and tangy combination of a South Carolina barbecued pork or a cumin, paprika and chili pepper paste based beef stew or Thai barbecue chicken skewers. Malbec’s acidity offers enough juice to cut the fat of big meats and put a spotlight on the flavors of the spice without overpowering the dish.

ost know Frank Family for their well-crafted Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, but did you know they also offer a luscious lineup of sparklings? It’s fitting, seeing as how their original stone structure on Larkmead Lane, built as the Larkmead Winery in 1884, once housed Hanns Kornell Champagne Cellars. The story involves WWII and a third generation German immigrant winemaker – Kornell himself – who was determined to establish a new life in America after being freed from the Dachau prison camp. On his way from England to America, though, his ship was torpedoed by the Germans, but he was rescued and landed in New York City with just $2 in his pocket. Kornell hitchhiked to California, where he worked in the wine industry, eventually purchasing Larkmead Winery from Lillie Hitchcock Coit, for whom the Coit Tower on Telegraph Hill in San Francisco is named. Kornell introduced méthode champenoise to California in 1958, and became known for his Riesling-based sparkling, reminiscent of the Sekt produced in Germany. He insisted on producing Champagne style wines while everyone else was making sparkling in vats. But when the big French and Spanish sparkling houses – Taittinger, Chandon, Roederer, Gloria Ferrer – began investing in Napa to expand their sparkling empires, Kornell found himself unable to compete. An overly ambitious, exceedingly expensive and way too late overhaul of the winery caused Kornell to go bankrupt. He promptly lost the winery and died penniless, at age 83. But the spirit of sparkling he began would yet live on. When Disney executive Rich Frank, purchased the property in 1992, he was attracted to the property’s storied history, and the rumor that Marilyn Monroe patronized Kornell back in the day to get her bubbles fix. When winemaker, Todd Graff, with ten years of high-end sparkling wine experience at Schramsberg (where he made sparkling in Portugal as part of a joint venture) as well as Cordoniu, joined the Frank Family team in 2003, it was time to crank up the bubble machine. Now both Winemaker and General Manager of Frank Family WINE COUNTRY THIS MONTH

Wines, Graff uses century-old methods to craft single-vineyard wines entirely in house. He sources all sparkling grapes from the Frank Family’s 86-acre Lewis Vineyard on San Pablo Bay, an ideal spot for growing sparkling wines. Here, 58 acres are planted to Chardonnay, and 10 acres to Pinot Noir. Frank Family currently produces about 5,000 total cases of four distinct styles of sparklings: the current offerings are 1,000 cases each of the 2015 Blanc de Blancs, 2016 Brut Rosé and 2017 Rouge, and 500 cases of 2012 Lady Edythe Reserve Brut. Graff says the Brut Rosé is by far the most popular of all the sparklings sold out of the tasting room. No wonder: it’s beautiful, soft and fruitdriven, with aromas of spring flowers and ripening strawberries, and flavors of raspberry and strawberry sherbet. Fans of Lambrusco style sparklers will appreciate the Rouge, made mostly of Pinot Noir with some generous skin contact for color and texture. It carries on a tradition started by Kornell, although he never used Burgundian varietals. “It’s a Champagne style red,” says Graff. “It’s not a still wine with bubbles in it.” All of the Frank Family sparkling wines are made painstakingly by hand in the méthode champenoise manner, which means secondary fermentation occurs in each individual bottle. It’s like managing thousands of separate fermentations. Each bottle has to be racked and riddled, one at a time. Initially, they used the original wooden riddling racks from the days of Hanns Kornell, but have since moved to mechanical riddling. Graff tells us, “Our Blanc de Blancs, Brut Rosé, and Rouge bottlings each spend three years resting on the lees before disgorgement. Our late-disgorged Lady Edythe Reserve spends six years on its lees.” If you’re a fan of sparkling, you might want to join the Frank Family Bubbles Club. Says Graff, “Our “Bubbles” Club is one of our most popular clubs, and it offers priority access to our Reserve Sparkling wine, released once every five years.”

The original Larkmead Winery, built in 1884, is part of the Frank Family Vineyards property.

a CHANGE of TASTE

Lighter Style Napa Valley Reds: What to Reach For BY MELISSA VOGT

In Napa Valley and beyond, there are dozens of red grape varieties that produce a wide range of wine styles. Looking past Cabernet Sauvignon, the region boasts an impressive selection of red wine varieties planted in local soils. When looking for lighter style reds, there’s quite a few produced locally that are worth seeking.

Pinot Noir finds a place on this list for its truly light-bodied palate and accessibility – there are many local producers crafting this varietal from the cooler, southern region of Los Carneros. For its brightness and acidity, Sangiovese is a favorite by all who seek nuanced flavor and complexity in a lighter style red. And for its classic floral and fruit characteristics, Grenache takes the stage.

20

Pinot Noir Premium bottlings of Napa Valley Pinot Noir harken to their French counterparts with signature California characteristics. Los Carneros is the optimal appellation for growing Pinot Noir because of its cool climate. Situated at the southernmost point of Napa Valley and closely located to the San Pablo Bay, Los Carneros experiences significant afternoon breezes that cool off the vineyards and offer moderate temperatures during the growing season. Rarely breaking 80 degrees, there’s enough sunshine to ripen the grapes but less heat than the rest of Napa Valley. Because of this, Pinot Noir from Los Carneros maintains excellent acidity and freshness. It’s also a great choice for food pairings because its light style is versatile with a variety of seasonings.

WINE COUNTRY THIS MONTH

Sangiovese Sangiovese, a native Italian varietal, is an everyday wine in Italy. The hallmarks of this varietal are its light body, bright fruit flavors, and vibrant acidity. In Napa Valley, there are several mostly small wineries who craft this wine across a variety of appellations. The Valley’s numerous soil classifications and microclimates allow Sangiovese to thrive in the mountainous regions of Atlas Peak to places on the valley floor like the Oak Knoll District. Local expressions pay homage to their roots, with the lighter versions matching in quality to the ever food-friendly Chianti Classico. And many of the local Sangiovese producers have Italian heritage, bringing with them a serious passion for the varietal that undoubtedly shows in the finished wines.

Grenache Rhône grape varieties are more prolific in California regions like Paso Robles and Santa Barbara, but Grenache still finds a home in Napa Valley. Many under-the-radar producers are crafting lovely versions of this varietal. In France, Grenache’s country of origin, the varietal is most blended with Syrah and Mourvèdre to make GSM. In Napa Valley, smaller and more specialized producers are making Grenache with quintessential floral aromas and silky profiles full of bright red fruit. Because Grenache has tannic structure and weight, these wines are beautifully balanced and offer a lot of complexity for a lighter style red.

Wine Recommendations Artesa Vineyards & Winery 2018 Dijon Blocks Estate Vineyard Pinot Noir Classic Los Carneros Pinot Noir, this wine offers an enticing bouquet of cherry and sweet tobacco leaf. On the palate, its silky profile showcases flavors of blueberry and dark red cherry with a long finish. Davis Estates 2019 Davis Estates Pinot Noir This Pinot Noir leads with aromas of baked cherry and cured meat, with notes of cherry, boysenberry, and forest floor on the palate. It’s a lively expression of Pinot Noir with the quintessential earthiness of Los Carneros fruit. Pope Valley Winery 2019 Sangiovese The Pope Valley Sangiovese finds a wonderful balance of fruit and earth on the palate. Ripe strawberry and unsweetened chocolate are coupled with excellent structure, fresh acidity, and a gracefulness that only this varietal can offer. Castello di Amorosa 2018 Voyager Vineyard Sangiovese This wine is quintessentially Sangiovese. Bright red cherry and dried strawberry aromas lead to a red fruit-filled palate with freshness, acidity, and a smooth mouthfeel.

Clif Family Vineyards 2018 Grenache Purple flowers, baking spice, and black cherries grace the bouquet of the 2018 Grenache from Clif Family Vineyards. On the palate, the wine has a full mouthfeel, noticeable tannic structure, and lots of lovely dark fruit. Robert Craig 2018 Côte de Craig The 2018 Côte de Craig is made in a classic Rhône style and showcases a blend of 68% Grenache and 32% Syrah. This is a voluptuous and nuanced wine with savory notes mixed with the bright fruit: black cherry, cured meats, and subtle hints of pepper. David Ramey to Receive Lifetime Achievement Award, Icons and Innovators to be Honored at the Eighth Annual Sonoma County Barrel Auction Sonoma County Vintners in collaboration with presenting sponsor American AgCredit will honor four Sonoma County Icons and Innovators. The Icons and Innovators have been named and will be recognized for their pioneering and forward-thinking contributions to Sonoma County and the wine community. In addition, Sonoma County Vintners will bestow its very first Lifetime Achievement Award to legendary winemaker David Ramey as part of the Sonoma County Barrel Auction (SoCoBA) on Friday, May 6. During the event, a new collection of “never before, never again wines” from Sonoma County’s leading vintners will be auctioned at MacMurray Estate Vineyards, providing trade members with wines for resale to their customers and ultrapremium wine collectors across the country and around the world. This exclusive auction is by invitation only for members of the wine trade and media.

Lifetime Achievement Award

David Ramey, Owner and Winemaker, Ramey Wine Cellars “We wanted to honor an individual who has made a significant impact in our wine community, pioneered new techniques with groundbreaking work, elevated Sonoma County and put Sonoma County wines on the world stage,” said Sonoma County Vintners Executive Director Michael Haney. “David Ramey is the perfect person to be our first-ever Lifetime Achievement Award recipient. We appreciate his commitment to the Sonoma County wine region and our local community.” 22

DAVID RAMEY

“I am honored to be considered and selected for this award,” said David Ramey. “I was lucky enough to start making Chardonnay in Sonoma County in 1978. It’s very gratifying to still be making wine here all these years later.” Over the years, David Ramey has helped pioneer traditional, artisan winemaking techniques in California during a period when making wine by the University book was the norm. Hailed as “Professor Chardonnay” by Wine Spectator, David’s efforts have helped shape the way many wines in the United States, and even in France, are made today. His contributions to modernday winemaking include pioneering whole-cluster pressing of WINE COUNTRY THIS MONTH

white grapes; the use of oxidized juice in making white wine; sur lie aging of white wines in barrel; malolactic fermentation of Chardonnay; native yeast fermentations; and bottling without filtration. David’s groundbreaking work with indigenous yeasts, sur lies aging and malolactic and barrel fermentation yielded a new California style that was richer, more lush and silky smooth than previously known. As a result, he created a benchmark style now emulated by many. “I care about the feel of the wine on the palate above all else,” says David. David earned a graduate degree from the University of California at Davis, where his 1979 thesis on volatile ester hydrolysis (translation: how aromas evolve in wine) is still used today to understand how wine ages. But shortly afterwards, a stint working for the Moueix family at the renowned Château Pétrus introduced David to the time-honored methods of winemaking in France. He brought his lessons home and applied them to the grapes he found growing in California’s premier wine regions. Back in California, David helped establish several wineries that would soon become household names. They include Matanzas Creek, Chalk Hill, Dominus Estate (owned by Christian Moueix, of Pétrus) and most recently, Rudd Estate. Ramey Wine Cellars, which David owned with his wife, Carla, was founded in 1996. As of 2021, their children, Claire and Alan, have assumed ownership of the winery and estate vineyard, Westside Farms. To make great wines, he takes chances. Many are hesitant to use native yeast and bacteria and to bottle without filtration. The resulting wines, though, are praised among colleagues, consumers, and the media alike. Most importantly, they are the wines David dreams of, brought to graceful, delicious life. David served as Chair of Family Winemakers of California, is on the executive board of Communicating for Agriculture, which provides visas for foreign students to work harvest in the US, and is on the Board of the Sonoma County Vintners and their government relations subcommittee. In addition to managing Ramey Wine Cellars, David enjoys consulting for a select handful of clients in the North Coast.

Sonoma County Icons and Innovators “This event is an important program in elevating awareness of Sonoma County’s world-class wines for a national trade audience. It’s the perfect time to shine a light on the incredible talent and achievements of iconic and innovative vintners in our local wine community,” said Sonoma County Vintners Executive Director Michael Haney. “These individuals have forged a path for Sonoma County wines to be acclaimed globally and continue to improve winemaking and vineyard care techniques that are widely adopted. We are honored that they continue to care so deeply for their craft and share their expertise with our winemaking community.” Sign up for our email newsletter at WineCountryThisMonth.com

AUDREY STERLING

Sonoma County Icons are individuals who have had a significant impact on the evolution, development and perpetuation of Sonoma County wine and have helped raise the global perception of Sonoma County wines. Sonoma County Innovators are visionaries, who are introducing new methods, ideas or products. They provide fresh insight and new ways of thinking about wine and Sonoma County that help shape the future of our wine region and industry. All previous Icon and Innovator honorees are listed online at SoCoBarrelAuction.com. Audrey Sterling, Co-Founder, Iron Horse Vineyards Icon Audrey Sterling is the matriarch and standardbearer of Iron Horse Vineyards, which she and Barry Sterling founded in 1976. Iron Horse was their vision and they were full partners in everything they did. In the early years, Audrey ran the winery and vineyard while Barry commuted from Los Angeles. It is hard to remember how pioneering it was to put down roots in western Sonoma County in the mid-1970s. The Sterlings knew the value of a cool climate for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from their years in France and Audrey was familiar with the area from childhood summers on the Russian River. They were the pioneers of the Green Valley appellation. In 1983, the name of the applicant for federal recognition of Green Valley as an American Viticultural Area (AVA) was Audrey M. Sterling with her attorney of record, Barry H. Sterling. 23

Randy Ullom, Winemaster & Senior Vice President, Kendall-Jackson Icon A legend in Sonoma County winemaking, Randy Ullom is known as a pioneer in the California Chardonnay movement. Prior to his time as Kendall-Jackson’s Winemaster, Randy was Vice President, Winemaker at DeLoach Vineyards for more than 12 years where he helped grow the brand from four thousand cases to about 80 thousand cases of Chardonnay as well as Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Sauvignon Blanc and White Zinfandel. Randy is now entering his 29th year with the Jackson family, spearheading all winemaking operations for Kendall-Jackson and the signature Vintner’s Reserve Chardonnay, America’s #1 selling Chardonnay since 1992. He has been a fixture in the Sonoma County wine scene for years, and his success stems from his deep-rooted passion for winemaking, hard work, and dedication. Randy is responsible for creating some of the most industry-leading initiatives in the wine space today, such as barrel-fermenting almost every drop of Chardonnay, an unprecedented commitment to artisanal winemaking techniques for a winery of considerable size. efforts, every wine in their portfolio carries a thirdparty certification of green farming practices. Created with the help of environmental experts, their certified-sustainable vineyard program is one of the most comprehensive in the country. The program, which emphasizes environmentally sound growing methods such as biodiversity, soil revitalization and Integrated Pest Management, shows growers how to cultivate grapes with more character, flavors and aromas with the goal of making better, genuinely distinctive wines. Benziger Family Winery was the first winery in Sonoma to be certified biodynamic and all four of the Benziger estate vineyards still hold the Demeter Biodynamic certification, the highest level of organic farming designed to focus on natural processes for minimal human intervention. The Benziger family uses their experience and insight to mentor a network of growers interested in farming in a way that cares for the land while producing quality wine. Ames Morison, Co-founder, Medlock Ames Innovator Ames Morison is the Co-founder of Medlock Ames winery. He spent three years in the Peace Corps in Guatemala which solidified his desire to be a vocal supporter of organic farming. Ames planted most of their 55-acre Bell Mountain vineyard site as well as supervised the winery’s construction. He is a pioneer in the area by farming organically and promotes healthy, living soil that nurtures, feeds and protects the vines and embraces age-old, low impact farming methods like crop diversity, which allow the vineyard to shine through in the fruit. Preservation of the land is the driving ethos for Ames, as well as educating his customers and the public about organic farming. Medlock Ames’ new Bell Mountain Immersive Sound Experience gives winery visitors another way to learn about sustainability and organic winemaking practices. Sonoma County Barrel Auction (SoCoBA)

Sustainability is Catching On Throughout Sonoma County BY JODY PURDOM

Steeped in agricultural history and long a bastion of environmentalists, the author Jack London among them, Sonoma County is today waging a valiant battle to retain its rural charm. Widely prized as a topnotch vacation destination, and courted by the area’s wineries, restaurants, shops and inns, the visitors that arrive throughout the year are at the crux of Sonoma County Tourism’s new sustainability pledge. As a new member of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization dedicated to establishing and managing global standards for sustainable travel and tourism, Sonoma County Tourism is working hard to encourage mindfulness toward and responsible stewardship of the county’s gorgeous yet fragile ecosystem. Sustainability in the Wine Industry Claudia Vecchio, President and CEO of Sonoma County Tourism, is excited about the new partnership and confident that visitors will jump onboard. “From a sustainability standpoint, Sonoma County has a rich history with local wine growers working to make us the first fully sustainable wine region in the world,”

26

said Vecchio. “Despite that, we noticed that certain types of visitors – novice travelers, if you will - weren’t following suit. In particular pandemic visitors who came to enjoy the area but left trash and litter in their wake.” Changing the Equation Vecchio said the new partnership with GSTC in conjunction with the Sonoma County Regional Parks and the national Leave No Trace (LNT) organization provided an opportunity to say “enough is enough” and craft a marketing campaign that leaned toward responsible travelers. “Travel and tourism used to be a numbers game” said Vecchio. “But now, we worry less about the numbers and more about promoting to the type of traveler who will protect and preserve our precious natural resources.” Global Rallying Cry As pandemic-media images of dolphins returning to the canals of Venice and coyotes roaming Los Angeles streets went viral, this idea caught on and has become a rallying cry across the world and more and more vacation destinations are looking to embrace travelers who have moved over to the responsible side. “Whether you live in Sonoma County or are just passing through on a visit, it’s important that as an organization, we provide people with practical solutions to help protect and preserve this stunningly beautiful place in the world.” Earth Day There are lots of great ways to celebrate Earth Day on April 22 in Sonoma County this year and Sonoma County Tourism has big plans. mong them, the launch of a new program that will incentivize visitors to do good CONTINUED NEXT PAGE

deeds like picking up and disposing of trash properly. Further, a newly developed app will also launch that will help people be more responsible stewards of the land. Visit their website at SonomaCounty.com and click on “Sonoma County Now” to know more. A sustainability powerhouse, Benziger Family Winery has for years celebrated Earth Day with planned activities for wine club members as well as nonmembers (no kids or pets, however). Biodynamically farmed for the past 20-plus years, Benziger is a front-runner in environmental stewardships of the land. Vineyard manager Jerry Mackling oversees nine vineyards throughout Sonoma County and says that in his 37 years of vineyard management, he’s never seen as many beneficial insects as he has than at Benziger. “Biodynamic farming is taking things a step further than organic farming,” said Mackling. “We follow the farming practices created by Rudolf Steiner who was the founder of the biodynamic approach to agriculture.” Using this method, the winery incorporates plant “preps” from the surrounding area and combines it with manure from grazing sheep and cattle. The vineyards are sprayed with this mixture to encourage microorganisms in the soil. The plant preps include cover crops like dandelion and yarrow as well as grape pumice and green waste like sheep bedding and manure, all ground together and incorporated back into the soil. “It’s an all organic process and it creates an incredible insectory for the vineyard,” said Mackling. To combat California’s never-ending drought, Mackling and Chris Benziger are constantly assessing each vineyard’s water needs and reducing irrigation as a result. “We practice deficit irrigation where we ask how much water did a plant use and lose. From there, we don’t water back at 100 percent in order to stress the vineyards which produces better grapes. And we are trying to dry farm as much as possible, nursing the vineyards along to ripen each crop.” To celebrate Earth Day this year, Benziger staff members will volunteer for trail work and park clean up at Jack London State Park. At the winery, things take a bit more of a festive turn with Earth Day activites taking place on Saturday, April 23 with two hikes planned at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Complimentary for wine club members and just $35 for nonmembers, the hour-long hikes will be led by Chris Benziger and each will take in the beauty of the winery’s Sonoma Mountain Estate property and include insights into biodynamic farming practices, family stories, and details about the winery’s many award-winning wines. Both hikes include wine tasting throughout the property. Reservations are required and comfortable shoes and a (reusable) bottle of water are recommended. For information visit Benziger.com.

Recommended Newly Released Wines

Robert Biale Vineyards 2021 Rosato, $37 The 2021 Rosato from Robert Biale Vineyards is a beautiful Rosé of Sangiovese. Tropical aromas of guava and candied watermelon abound, with zesty lime, poached pear, and bright strawberry flavors on the palate. There’s a hint of minerality that lines the backbone of this fresh Rosé and it’s got excellent freshness and acidity. This is a lovely expression of Rosé and a truly unique wine, given that it’s craµed from the estate’s exclusive Sangiovese fruit. Get your hands on this bo le before it’s gone. Gary Farrell Vineyards & Winery 2019 Russian River Valley Pinot Noir $45 This is a classic Russian River Valley Pinot Noir from Gary Farell. The provenance speaks for itself with fruit from the renowned vineyards of Rochioli, Bacigalupi, Hallberg, and more. It’s aged 10 months in 30% new French oak, giving just the right balance between fruit and oak influence on the palate. Quintessential aromas of raspberry and forest floor lead the way. It’s a pure expression of local Pinot Noir with ripe red cherry and hints of baking spice. The mouthfeel is voluptuous, and the acidity is fresh—everything you expect and crave in a great Pinot Noir.

Head High 2021 Chardonnay, $22 When the weather starts to warm, less-oaked expressions of Chardonnay are an excellent choice. The 2021 Head High Chardonnay is made from vineyards planted to Robert Young Chardonnay clones. It’s full and welcoming on the palate with bright tropical flavors, and notes of Meyer lemon zest and green apple. The wine is stainless steel fermented for three months and sees no oak or malolactic fermentation—leaving those heavy bu ery notes behind for a fresher and more fruit-forward expression of this classic varietal.

Banshee 2021 Rosé, $28 The 2021 Banshee Rosé is comprised of Pinot Noir, Sangiovese, Syrah, Black Muscat, Carignan, Muscat, and Zinfandel—with Pinot Noir (50%) and Sangiovese (32%) making up the bulk of the wine. It’s a wonderfully unique bo ling that showcases a lot of complexity. What’s more, the varietals are harvested across seven different Sonoma County appellations. While there’s a lot going on here, that’s exactly what makes this Rosé worth seeking. White flowers and fresh strawberry aromas give way to a palate with mouthwatering acidity and juicy notes of strawberry and watermelon. It’s light, bright, fresh, and perfectly dry. This is a great choice for pairing alongside a bountiful charcuterie plate. 33

WINESONG

This calendar itself is a celebration, because most, if not all of these festivals are returning aµer a muchtoo-long, COVID-inspired break. From the Anderson Valley to Monterey and everywhere in between, California is gearing up for 2022 with dozens of upcoming wine-related festivals. Some are centered around a specific appellation like Stags Leap District’s Vineyard to Vintner Weekend and Discover Coombsville. Others are all about one varietal such as World of Pinot Noir or ZinEx. Love Riesling, Gewürztraminer and Pinot Gris? Don’t miss the Anderson Valley White Wine Festival in February. Curious about what wines taste like fresh from the barrel? Spend a couple days along Sonoma County’s Wine Road in March. Looking for a more indulgent culinary event? Don’t miss the Big Sur Food & Wine Festival This year’s wine festivals feature wines for every palate. Let’s raise a glass to toast their return!

The series can be viewed exclusively on Amazon’s Prime Video, with the Town of Yountville as the eighth episode in the series. Yountville’s episode focuses on how art takes many forms, included history, culinary, winemaking and hospitality. The combination of these forms paired with traditional arts, results in a unique episode that could only happen in Yountville. The artists featured in the episode include vintner Jean Charles Boisset, Chef Michael Chiarello, hospitality veteran Stephanie Leavitt of Bardessono, historian Liz Allesio, along with 50

fine artists James Moore (sculpture) and Ivy Yountville Paperie (watercolor). “We are thrilled Yountville has been recognized for its artistic nature,” stated Yountville Chamber President & CEO Whitney Diver McEvoy. “The arts, as it appears in many forms, is critical to our diversity as a destination in Yountville and the Napa Valley.” The Story of Art in America won the “Best Series” Award at the Venice Shorts Film Festival and has been garnering rave reviews since its debut. Wine Tasting

Helpul Tips

Visiting a winery tasting room may sometimes be intimidating, especially if you are not used to wine tasting and aren’t quite sure what to expect. Additionally, Covid-19 has made it necessary for some changes and adaptations. Following the guidelines and etique e tips below will help enhance your experience as you travel through wine country. Due to Covid-19, there have been changes to the wine tasting adventures. So please before you go: • Plan in advance. Most wineries are now by appointment and in some cases “as space is available” (should you not have made reservations). Don’t be shy to ask at the last minute, but understand they may be full or be reserved. • Understand that there may be a time limit • Ask about the different tasting experiences and costs. • If you plan to “share” a tasting, ask if it is okay. You may still be charged per person. • If this applies, ask if the winery is dog/child friendly. • Be sure to adhere to individual, local and state guidelines in place at the time (i.e. mask wearing until seated, etc.) • Be flexible • Don’t be self-conscious to share a tasting (*if appropriate) with your companion – it’s not looked on as being cheap, in fact, it’s smart. • Don’t worry if you think you don’t know good wine. “Good wine” is what you like. Period. • You don’t have to finish the glass. You are tasting, not drinking – use the dump bucket. Those li le sips add up fast. • You don’t have to like everything poured. The reason you are tasting is to see what you do and don’t like. • Take time to smell the roses, or wine! Swirl the wine in the bowl of the glass then take your time, put your nose into the bowl of the glass … and inhale to experience the bouquet. See what fragrances you can identify: Earthy? Lemon? Honeysuckle? Cherry? Tobacco? It’s okay if you don’t identify any of those things, with time and tasting you will! • Remember the five “S’s” of wine tasting: See (the wine in the glass), Swirl, Smell, Sip and Savor. (Take a small sip. Let the liquid surround your taste buds, what flavors can you identify)?

WINE COUNTRY THIS MONTH

SONOMA COUNTY RECOMMENDED WINERIES ★ BACA WINES AS WITH LIFE, BACA IS BEST EXPERIENCED FIRST HAND. • Award-Winning Wines • Panoramic Vineyard Views • World-Class Artwork Open daily; 707 433-2222; 2201 Westside Road, Healdsburg

★ BREATHLESS WINES Celebrate your breathless moments with award-winning sparkling wine! • Sparkling & Still Wines • Cheese & Charcuterie • Caviar Picnic • Sabrage Experience 707 395-7300, 499 Moore Ln, Healdsburg

★ CLINE CELLARS • Ask questions! Remember … there are no stupid questions. You are there to enjoy and learn, and your server is there to help. • Don’t feel pressured to buy a bo le or to join a wine club, (however, if the tasting is free, or if you have a private tasting with a winemaker, it is good form to purchase a bo le). • Leave a tip if you have had a nice experience ($5-$20 is a general rule, depending on the type of tasting). • Don’t wear scents into a tasting room (cologne or perfume), and try not to wear white! • Ask your server to recommend their favorite wineries to visit. • Seek smaller, out-of-the-way, boutique wineries. • Eat breakfast before you leave for the day and … hydrate – hydrate – hydrate! Hint: Drink one glass of water for each glass of wine. • Bring something to snack on such as crackers, breadsticks or a bague e, (but inquire in advance if outside food is okay to bring in). Take time for lunch. When picnicking at a winery, never bring wine from another winery • Don’t try to do too much. In general, three to four wineries will fill your day. • If possible have a designated driver (or use a driving service). If staff feels you have had enough to drink they may refuse service, it’s for your own well-being. • Trust your palate. Don’t worry if you don’t like what your friends or companions like. Not everyone likes the same things. This is about you – not them. • Enjoy yourself! Be respectful of all conditions and procedures. Wineries have had challenges to adjust their normal procedures due to Covid-19. Everything they do is to insure your safety, pleasure and that you have a great time. Covid-19 has had many positive effects for wine tasting: More intimate, less crowded, more time to really talk to your winery host. With this is mind ... let’s go BY DONALD SONDERLING tasting and have fun! (It’s prudent to double check your planned visit, if possible, the day of your visit.)
