California Dreaming with
Kathryn Hall
Kathryn Walt Hall, Vintner of HALL, WALT and BACA Wines, was once a visionary with a California dream. Today, her dream is a reality. Deep Connection to the Land “As a kid living with my parents in Mendocino wine country, I always looked to Napa Valley as the place I hoped to live and to grow Cabernet Sauvignon grapes,” Hall stated. Having grown up on her family’s vineyard and always immersed in wine country culture, she felt a deep connection to the land. Hall’s background in wine began right from the start when she developed a lifelong passion for working in the vineyards. In her young adulthood, she helped manage the family vineyard alongside her brother, a time Hall reflects upon fondly. “Back then we were still learning which varietals grew best in which valleys, but we always realized that if you wanted to grow Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa was the place to be,” she said. During this time, her family produced Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon under the WALT Vineyards label. And while she left home following her graduation from high school to earn a B.A. in Economics from UC Berkeley, her time spent getting to know the vineyards, working in the cellar, and helping to oversee WALT Vineyards production with her family ensured that she would return to wine country.
A Storied Career After her time at UC Berkeley, Hall set out on a successful journey of academics that included earning a joint MBA from UC Berkeley & Columbia University and a J.D. from UC Hastings College of Law. With such extensive education, her career path was driven by versatility, and she became a strong and successful businesswoman, attorney, and community activist. Much of her work was focused on philanthropy and agriculture, and one of her first major career achievements was the development and administration of one of the nation’s first and largest affirmative action programs. Hall also served on numerous non-profit and institutional boards, addressing issues related to social care and mental health; she co-founded the North Texas Food Bank; served on the U.S. House of Representatives Hunger Advisory Committee; and was the director/vice president of the Texas Mental Health Association. In addition to all these esteemed achievements, Hall served as the United States Ambassador to Austria from 1997-2001, focusing on issues related to American agriculture. It was following this prestigious four-year role that she realized her heart belonged in wine country and Hall was called back to the land with a deep yearning for living, once again, among the vines.

“I am very proud of this wine and of our cellar and vineyard teams.”
– Vintner Kathryn Hall
Hall reached back to her wine country roots and landed in Napa Valley in 2001 with the founding of HALL Wines. Today, her vast education, strong work ethic, and incredible career experience brings her an immense amount of leadership, skill, and passion in her role as Vintner of HALL Wines, WALT, and BACA Wines. And her philanthropic background serves as an ethos in everything she does at the estates, supporting and giving back across four areas that Hall holds dear to her heart: community, arts, responsible business practices, and entrepreneurship.

Living the Dream No longer a stranger to Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, Hall has become one of the Valley’s most successful women in wine, overseeing several locations across the HALL, WALT, and BACA brands, and producing an incredible selection of highly rated wines. As a vintner, she is respected and loved, and her teams are comprised of longstanding members who have become part of the HALL and WALT wine family. She takes pride in staffing the wineries with good-hearted people who have the same love for the land and vineyards as she does, and together, the team works to craft some of the most distinct wines in Napa Valley. “While I love California wine country as a whole, I have long held a special reverence for the Napa Valley, where we have such a great opportunity to grow and make Cabernet that ranks among the best in the world,” Hall said. And her namesake line of Kathryn Hall Cabernet Sauvignon has lived up to those expectations, with countless accolades and high scores from renowned wine critics around the globe. This fall marks the release of the 2019 Kathryn Hall Cabernet Sauvignon—a wine that “had all the makings for a great vintage,” Hall stated. The 2019 growing season in Napa Valley began with enough rain and infrequent heat spikes, which lent itself to consistent ripening at an ideal pace. The resulting wines from this excellent vintage show a lot of structure with well-integrated acidity and depth. “We blend this wine first to make sure it meets its standard

of flagship,” Hall said. And this year includes some of their most-celebrated vineyards, like their Sacrashe Vineyard and Rainin Vineyard. “Year after year, our Kathryn Hall Cabernet continues to be our flagship and most exciting wine,” she emphasized. The release of the 2019 Kathryn Hall Cabernet Sauvignon comes with a celebration fit for Kathryn Hall herself—a woman with sophisticated tastes; a philanthropic heart that guides her commitment to her community, family, and friends; and a love for California wine country like no other.
Annual Kathryn HALL Harvest Celebration This year’s Annual Kathryn Hall Harvest Celebration will be held on September 10th at HALL St. Helena from 12 to 3 p.m. Three ticket options offer wine enthusiasts an opportunity to taste the new vintage and experience a selection of wine tastings. “This year, we will highlight the delight of living in California,” Hall said. “Not only can we make marvelous Cabernet Sauvignon here in Napa Valley, but we are all lucky to live and work in a state with such cultural richness and diversity.” In addition to the 2019 Kathryn Hall Cabernet Sauvignon—which scored a very impressive 95 – 97+ pointrange barrel rating from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate— guests will get to enjoy other premium wines from the HALL collection. Wines will be shared with local food pairings, special VIP tastings, live music, and dancing. “California has it all and we want to celebrate that,” Hall stated. And this year’s celebration promises to offer special experiences that only California can offer.

Fire up the grill and grab these BBQ-friendly wines all summer long. Sequoia Grove Winery 2018 Napa Valley Merlot, $60 A great Merlot should be silky in texture and exhibit the classic flavors of plum and graphite, and this 2018 Merlot from Sequoia Grove is exactly that. The 2019 expression shows notes of violet and ripe raspberry on the nose. It’s got the quintessential acidity for the varietal, making it a perfect pairing for tomato-sauced pastas, and boasts loads of juicy tart fruit on the

Red Bear Winery 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon, $65 Alexander Valley is known for its Cabernet Sauvignon and for good reason. The varietal paves its own path in this northeastern appellation of Sonoma County, set apart from the styles made in Napa. A combination of Alexander Valley terroir and winemaking style make this Cabernet from Red Bear a beauty from the region. It’s made in a full-bodied style with dark black cherry and blackberry notes, and hints of pepper. It showcases the balanced and restrained style of Alexander Valley Cabernet very well.

Prager Wins Gold! As the largest and most prestigious competition for California wines, the Orange County Fair Commercial Wine Competition has been an annual tradition since 1976. Judges are comprised of industry experts from wine critics and writers to winemakers and winery principles. The evaluations are serious business, making a “win” a big deal. Taking home five gold medals is an even bigger achievement, which is exactly what Prager Winery & Port Works did, and they’re thrilled with their placements at this year’s show. The Prager brothers (Peter, Jeff, and John) began their fascination with fortified wines back in 1997, and today, their winery is one the valley’s top must-taste destinations. Prager purposefully produces ports which are drier than most on the market, with meticulous attention paid to the levels of sweetness and acidity. This skillful balance yields multidimensional ports with a signature roundness on the palate.
GOLD MEDAL WINNERS ~ 2022 Orange County Fair Commercial Wine Competition 2018 Royal Escort Port: Thanks to an abundant rainfall in late 2017, followed by even and consistent temperatures in the 2018 spring and summer growing season, the Petite Sirah for this port saw a near perfect vintage. Slow ripening developed balanced and complex flavors. As a result, this port shows a dark, vibrant garnet hue with aromas of blueberry and ripe cherry. Currants and more cherry flavor on the palate and a 750ml, silky texture. Rich layered tannins and a clean finish. $80.00
2016 Prager Port: Their namesake blends Tinta Roriz, Petite Sirah, and Cabernet Sauvignon grape varieties for a dark garnet colored port. Extended aging in neutral oak barrels for 32 months leads to heady aromas of cherry and plum which are backed by even more ripe cherry and dark plum on the palate. Hints of dark chocolate and currants round out the flavor. A lively finish with bright acidity balances the inherent 750ml, $60.00 sweetness. Noble Companion 10-Year-Old Tawny Port: A blend of four vintages, this dark amber colored port showcases complex
22
aromas of caramel and dried fruits with a hint of vanilla. The flavors of dried orange rind, caramel, and toffee are framed by this well-structured port’s acidity. A favorite with dried fruits and nuts, cheese boards, and custard-style desserts like bread pudding, crème caramel, and flans. Or, simply sip sans food with a fine cigar. This tawny-style port is best enjoyed within 3-4 years of purchase. 750ml, $80.00 2018 Aria White Port: Using 100% Chardonnay fruit grown in Napa Valley, this white port developed a lovey amber color from its three and a half years in neutral oak barrels. Aromas of sweet vanilla bean and caramel fill the nose. A rich creamy texture coats the palate with lush flavors of more vanilla and caramelized sugar ending with a slight nuttiness. It’s like 750ml, $60.00 crème brûlée in a glass! 2014 Petite Sirah Wine: Beautiful clusters of Petite Sirah grapes were grown at the winery’s Paladini Vineyard located in St. Helena. Barrel aged for two and a half years, and an additional five years of bottle aging makes this wine sing with lush aromas of raspberry and sweet oak opening to flavors of cherry, cedar, and vanilla on the palate. Well-integrated tannins give this wine plenty of runway for a long, fruit-forward 750ml, $48.00 finish.
TASTE THE WINNERS Taste these award-winning wines under the covered crush pad at the winery. BARTOLUCCI FAMILY
MADONNA ESTATE WINERY Celebrating
100 YEARS in Winemaking F
ounded in 1922, Madonna Estate celebrates 100 years of winemaking this year. The Bartolucci family has planning underway for an old-style Italian open house at the winery on August 27, 2022. As an immigrant from Rimini, in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy, Andrea Bartolucci left his wife and unborn child in the old country and passed through Ellis Island in 1913. He earned his living in construction work after arriving in San Francisco, helping to build structures for the Panama-Pacific International Exposition among other jobs. By 1918, he had earned enough to reunite his family in the new world. The Madonna Winery and Vineyards “date of date” is June 1, 1922, when family members Giuditto and Andrea Bartolucci bought a single acre in Oakville, just south of Oakville Grocery. In 1923, Giuditto and Andrea Bartolucci purchased another 24 acres to create the first Madonna Vineyard. Vineyards and wineries were on their heels in Napa Valley in 1922. The onset of Prohibition in 1920 dramatically shrank the market for wine. A fire destroyed the original Madonna Winery building in 1924. The Bartolucci’s bounced back, and like many of their peers, earned their income by selling grapes in San Francisco for homemade wine, which was still allowed under the Volstead Act. Despite Prohibition, the Great Depression, and World War II, the family business grew dramatically over the years. The

winery was renamed Mont St. John and by 1948, under the management of Andrea’s son Louis and brothers Lino and Henry Bartolucci, and it was found to be the 12th largest winery in California. In 1970, the family sold the 300 acres they had accumulated in Oakville, Yountville and Oak Knoll, and Louis and his son Andrea “Buck” Bartolucci chose to invest in Los Carneros. Buck purchased 160 acres and planted Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in 1970. From the start, the Madonna Vineyards produced 100% organically grown, dry farmed wine grapes, and the Bartolucci’s decided to produce only single varietal wines with no blending. These beliefs, farming techniques and procedures are still in effect today. The current cellar and tasting room on the corner of Highway 12 and Old Sonoma Road was built in 1977 by Louis and Buck Bartolucci. The first vintage of Pinot Noir was produced in 1979, and shortly thereafter in 1981 the tasting room officially opened to the public. As they celebrate 100 years in 2022, the Bartolucci’s have the second-longest record of continuous family winemaking in Napa Valley. (Only the Nichellini Family has been producing longer.) Madonna Estate produces 10 wines with minimal intervention and winemaker influence, reflecting the vineyard, the vintage, and the varietals. On a daily basis you can find Buck Bartolucci, his wife Susan, and their two daughters Brette and Taylor Bartolucci working at the winery in the office, cellar, tasting room and vineyard. They continue the tradition of dry farming and organic grape growing, and in 1991 became one of the earliest members of California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF). As the second oldest winemaking family in the Napa Valley, the Bartolucci’s look forward to the next 100 years, with a dedication to farming naturally, while preserving and refining the winemaking traditions of their past. BACCHUS LANDING Healdsburg’s beautiful new winery enclave where wine lovers flock to experience micro-bottlings from newcomers in the industry to the most iconic names in wine. Opened in March 2020, the unfortunate coincidence in timing with pandemic restrictions kept this place under wraps for a bit. Now that wine tasting is back, and bigger than ever, the secret of Bacchus Landing’s curated collective of world-class wineries is out and waiting for you to explore. Located next door to the Healdsburg Humane Society and minutes from downtown Healdsburg, the threeacre Tuscan-styled tasting cooperative has incredible wines with sampling available indoors or al fresco on the patio. Reservations are not required for the wineries (with exception of The Setting Wines) so guests are encouraged to spend a full day exploring the venue at their leisure. The site also boasts a café & boutique, bocce courts, picnic tables, live music once a month, and an outdoor central piazza. The wineries are also dog-friendly so bring (leashed) Fido and spend the day relaxing, people-watching, and wine tasting. Additional property amenities included semiprivate and private rooms for weddings, conferences, and meetings. Their Wine Lab room can accommodate private tastings/blending seminars and a roof-top terrace makes for the perfect social gathering spot for a cocktail reception or community event. Founded by Al and Dina Lopez, their children Francisco and Monica run the day-to-day operations at Bacchus Landing. The family’s vision of creating a warm and welcoming destination for wine experiences was born from Al’s entrepreneurial spirit and passion for wine. After moving the family to Sonoma County from Los Angeles in 1998, Al’s hobbyist estate Cabernet Sauvignon soon became a fullfledged brand with Aldina Vineyards. Their wines, along with Dot Wine and 13th & Third Wines can be tasted in the shared tasting room.
SUPPORTING OUR FOUR-LEGGED FRIENDS If you’re a wine AND dog lover, then these two wineries are for you. Montagne Russe Founded by Frenchmen Kevin Bersofsky, an electrical engineer who builds rollercoasters, the collection of wines at Montagne Russe (French for “Russian Mountains” which rollercoasters were believed to be named after), are small-production wines from coolclimate regions such as the Petaluma Gap and greater Sonoma Coast AVA. Their BirchBark Pinot Noir gives 10% of each bottle sale to the BirchBark Foundation, a nonprofit that saves animals’ lives during veterinary emergencies when their owners are unable to afford the necessary care. Tastings Thurs-Monday from 10am-5pm. $25 per person Smith Story Wine Cellars Recently relocated from Anderson Valley to Sonoma County, husband-and-wife-owned Smith Story Wine Cellars began with travels to faraway places drinking wines they love. The power-palates of Ali Smith and Eric Story, both alumni of K&L Wine Merchants in San Francisco, believe simply respecting the land and guiding the fruit in the cellar allows the ultimate expression of the vineyard. Their Lord Sandwich Wines fund Socks for Sandwich (named for their beloved Goldendoodle) provides new socks for those in need across the world as well as angel medical services for the Humane Society of Sonoma County. Seated tastings on Thursday-Monday at 11am, 12pm, 1pm, 2pm & 3pm; $25 per person; allow 45 minutes

MORE TO TASTE Aldina Vineyards Proprietor Al Lopez and Winemaker Belen Ceja (daughter of renown winemaker Armando Ceja) focus on small-lot Cabernet Sauvignon using minimalist, traditional, and new wine making methods. Subtle touches of oak coupled with their estate fruit grown in volcanic soils high up on a mountain top in Santa Rosa in the newer Fountaingrove District AVA creates exceptional expressions of this classic varietal. Indoor and outdoor tastings available Thursday-Monday $40 per person; Small Bites Pairing featuring locally curated meats and cheeses additional $15 per person. AldenAlli Legendary Pinot producer Dan Kosta of the famed Kosta Browne Winery has partnered with philanthropist Alden Lagasse, Co-founder of the Emeril Lagasse Foundation, to craft cool-climate, terroir driven wines of the highest quality. Two wine flights are available: The Classic Flight of three signature wines from AldenAlli portfolio or the Limited Pinot Flight showcasing a curated selection of limited single vineyard/designate and library Pinot Noir wines. Tastings on Thursday- Monday from 11am-5pm; reservations suggested, visit aldenalli.com

Dot Wines In art, the Dot is the purest unit of both form and function. Dot wine is the direct translation of vineyard to bottle. Wife and husband team Lise Asimont (veteran viticulturist) and Shawn Phillips (veteran published gardener) use their love of the land and a “less is more” approach in the cellar to craft exceptional ultra-premium Rosé, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir. Tastings Thursday-Sundays from 11am- 5pm. Reservations at dotwinerocks@gmail.com. 13th & Third It all began on 13th Street & Third Avenue in New York City. Owners Gregg and Julie Rothburg met there by happenstance through a mutual love of cycling, wine, and life…and the rest, as they say, is history. Organic and sustainably farmed fruit from Paso Robles is crafted into small batch Rhône style wines balanced to pair with inventive foods. Tastings Thursday-Monday, 10am-5pm. Reservations recommended, walk-in’s subject to availability. The Setting Wines Co-founded in 2014 by famed Winemaker Jesse Katz and friends Jeff Cova and Noah McMahon, The Setting Wines gives back in meaningful ways while encouraging the appreciation of where you are and whom you’re with…“the setting” if you will. Their collection of luxury Bordeaux-styled wines and private barrel programs for select clients showcases his terroir-driven viticultural pursuits yielding wines of elegance, balance, and intensity. Tastings are by-appointment only Thursday-Monday, 10am-5pm. The Appellation Tasting: a selection of four wines of appellation-designate from Oakville, Coombsville, Rockpile Ridge and Alexander Valley. $50 per person, allow 60 minutes. By Tanya Seibold

The Setting Wines Co-founded in 2014 by Winemaker Jesse Katz and friends Jeff Cova and Noah McMahon, the quest with The Setting Wines is to give back in meaningful ways while encouraging the appreciation of where you are and whom you’re with… the setting, if you will. Their collection of luxury Bordeauxstyled wines showcase not only Jesse’s extreme winemaking talents but the precision of terroir-driven viticultural pursuits which yield wines of elegance, balance, and intensity. Private Barrel Program As part of their philanthropic mission, The Setting Wines collaborates with two clients each year to create a private barrel program which will support that organization’s ethos and charitable goals. Many of the clients are well-known sports and entertainment personalities such as Shep Gordon, Tony Hawk, Los Angeles Lakers, Ellen Degeneres, and more.

Impressive When experiencing these critically acclaimed wines, it’s easy to understand why ‘The Setting Wines Glass Slipper Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon’ (6L) bottle has become the stuff of which dreams are made of. Its recent record-setting sale at the Emeril Lagasse Foundation’s annual charity wine auction was the first-ever recorded $1 million price tag for a bottle of wine sold at auction. But many will say Jesse’s most notable accomplishments to-date are producing not one, but two perfect 100-point score wines; receiving a 90+ rating from Robert Parker, Jr. on every bottle produced while at Roth Estate; and producing a bottle designated as ‘Top 100 Wines’ by Wine Spectator. And all before the age of 35. Impressive. Jesse and his team make The Setting Wines according to each site. First, evaluating the varietal then tannin expression and phenolic ripeness, and finally vintage conditions. Jesse’s

superpower is harnessing, in complete synchronicity, each of these factors within a given block (or row) thereby mastering exceptional expressions of site-specific winemaking. The Setting Wines sources fruit from prestigious sites across Sonoma County and Napa Valley focusing on the aspect, elevation, soils, and micro-climates to select and cultivate vineyards which are the highest expressions of the sum of its parts. The wines are produced at Aperture Cellars, a stateof-the-art facility in Healdsburg owned by Jesse and his father, celebrated photographer Andy Katz. The site takes full advantage of its topography showcasing the natural beauty surrounding it as well as been designed for an optimum winemaking flow from start to finish. The crush pad was built facing toward the wind to act as a natural cooling mechanism for the grapes during the hot days of harvest. Tanks can be regulated offsite with a touch of a phone button for maximum control over every step of the fermentation process. But Jesse prefers to do punch downs by hand for a gentle pressing to prevent bruising and over extraction. Custom made barrels from the finest French cooperages line the cellar to gracefully age the wines.

Guests can choose to taste indoors or al fresco on their private patio. Sonoma’s Newest AVA:
“The West Sonoma Coast”
T
he West Sonoma Coast Vintners announced the TTB’s approval of the newly established West Sonoma Coast American Viticultural Area (AVA). The West Sonoma Coast AVA is located within the westernmost portion of Sonoma County, holding approximately 50 vineyards planted with varieties ranging from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay to Syrah. The approval of the AVA recognizes the region’s unique maritime growing conditions that are clearly expressed in the wines and give proper distinction to the growers who farm this cold, marginal viticultural region. West Sonoma Coast is the 19th AVA in Sonoma County. The AVA is located on the furthest western sliver of Sonoma County encompassing the steep, rugged mountainous terrain along the Pacific Ocean coastline. The AVA comprises three sub regions from north to south: Annapolis, the Fort Ross-Seaview AVA and Freestone-Occidental. The Pacific Ocean forms the western boundary of the AVA, and the shared Sonoma-Mendocino County line forms the northern boundary. The eastern boundary follows a series of elevation contours within 5 to 7 miles of the Pacific Ocean while the southern boundary is marked by the northern boundary of the Petaluma Gap AVA. The growers in West Sonoma Coast are pushing the boundaries of what is possible in this marginal climate. Erin Brooks of Ernest Winery summarizes the significance of the new appellation noting, “A great deal of effort from our winegrowing community has been devoted to getting this AVA approved. We are excited for West Sonoma Coast to be recognized as the true coastal region within the greater Sonoma Coast appellation, a distinction that will inform the wine consumer on a unique style that is dictated by coastal proximity.” Elevation of the West Sonoma Coast AVA ranges from 400 to 1,800 feet with vineyards planted on steep ridge tops along the San Andreas fault line up against the consistently cold Pacific Ocean, both above and below the fog line. As a result, temperatures are at least 10 or more degrees
40
Occidental Wines
cooler than the rest of the Sonoma Coast AVA. Due to the immediate proximity of the Pacific Ocean, cold marine air and heavy fog create challenging conditions for grape growers, while offering distinct advantages for wine grapes. The maritime conditions moderate the temperature in the vineyards – daytime highs are cooler, while nighttime lows are warmer than just a few miles inland. This modest diurnal temperature swing allows the fruit to ripen slowly throughout the day and the night, a phenomenon experienced only in a truly cold-climate, maritime environment. This slow, steady ripening promotes the development of fruit that reaches true physiological maturity at lower sugar levels with pronounced acidity. The climatic characteristics of West Sonoma Coast guide the style of the wine produced in the AVA. Bright acidity, moderate alcohol, and pure flavors are the qualities that are often associated with the wines from the West Sonoma Coast. The newfound status of the region as an AVA provides clarity for the consumer who can expect a wine labeled ‘West Sonoma Coast’ to have these defining qualities that differentiate its wines from those grown on warmer sites farther inland in the Sonoma Coast AVA. The area comprising the West Sonoma Coast AVA has a long agricultural history dating back to the 1880s, with the earliest vitis vinifera vines planted as early as 1817. In addition to wine grapes, the area still produces commercial apples and supports a lively dairy and ranching industry, as well as many nature parks, conservancy efforts and environmental projects. The West Sonoma Coast Vintners is an association of wineries and growers who are passionate about farming along the mountainous coastline of western Sonoma County. Their goal is to promote and preserve the character and complexity of the rugged West Sonoma Coast region — its wines, culture, history, natural landscape, and cool, maritime climate. For a list of members of the West Sonoma Coast Vintners and to learn more, visit westsonomacoast.com.

Wine Tasting
Helpful Tips
Visiting a winery tasting room may sometimes be intimidating, especially if you are not used to wine tasting and aren’t quite sure what to expect. Additionally, Covid-19 has made it necessary for some changes and adaptations. Following the guidelines and etique e tips below will help enhance your experience as you travel through wine country. Due to Covid-19, there have been changes to the wine tasting adventures. So please before you go: • Plan in advance. Most wineries are now by appointment and in some cases “as space is available” (should you not have made reservations). Don’t be shy to ask at the last minute, but understand they may be full or be reserved. • Understand that there may be a time limit • Ask about the different tasting experiences and costs. • If you plan to “share” a tasting, ask if it is okay. You may still be charged per person. • If this applies, ask if the winery is dog/child friendly. • Be sure to adhere to individual, local and state guidelines in place at the time (i.e. mask wearing until seated, etc.) • Be flexible • Don’t be self-conscious to share a tasting (*if appropriate) with your companion – it’s not looked on as being cheap, in fact, it’s smart.
• Ask questions! Remember … there are no stupid questions. You are there to enjoy and learn, and your server is there to help. • Don’t feel pressured to buy a bo le or to join a wine club, (however, if the tasting is free, or if you have a private tasting with a winemaker, it is good form to purchase a bo le). • Leave a tip if you have had a nice experience ($5-$20 is a general rule, depending on the type of tasting). • Don’t wear scents into a tasting room (cologne or perfume), and try not to wear white! • Ask your server to recommend their favorite wineries to visit. • Seek smaller, out-of-the-way, boutique wineries. • Eat breakfast before you leave for the day and … hydrate – hydrate – hydrate! Hint: Drink one glass of water for each glass of wine. • Bring something to snack on such as crackers, breadsticks or a bague e, (but inquire in advance if outside food is okay to bring in). Take time for lunch. When picnicking at a winery, never bring wine from another winery • Don’t try to do too much. In general, three to four wineries will fill your day.
• Don’t worry if you think you don’t know good wine. “Good wine” is what you like. Period.
• If possible have a designated driver (or use a driving service). If staff feels you have had enough to drink they may refuse service, it’s for your own well-being.
• You don’t have to finish the glass. You are tasting, not drinking – use the dump bucket. Those li le sips add up fast.
• Trust your palate. Don’t worry if you don’t like what your friends or companions like. Not everyone likes the same things. This is about you – not them.
• You don’t have to like everything poured. The reason you are tasting is to see what you do and don’t like.
• Enjoy yourself!
• Take time to smell the roses, or wine! Swirl the wine in the bowl of the glass then take your time, put your nose into the bowl of the glass … and inhale to experience the bouquet. See what fragrances you can identify: Earthy? Lemon? Honeysuckle? Cherry? Tobacco? It’s okay if you don’t identify any of those things, with time and tasting you will! • Remember the five “S’s” of wine tasting: See (the wine in the glass), Swirl, Smell, Sip and Savor. (Take a small sip. Let the liquid surround your taste buds, what flavors can you identify)?

Be respectful of all conditions and procedures. Wineries have had challenges to adjust their normal procedures due to Covid-19. Everything they do is to insure your safety, pleasure and that you have a great time. Covid-19 has had many positive effects for wine tasting: More intimate, less crowded, more time to really talk to your winery host. With this is mind ... let’s go tasting and BY DONALD SONDERLING have fun! (It’s prudent to double check your planned visit, if possible, the day of your visit.) WINE COUNTRY THIS MONTH
