ust as wine became popular throughout Folsom and El Dorado County, it seems craft beers are starting to take similar force. Folsom will host its first craft beer event this month, called Tap Folsom. The event will be from 6-10 p.m., Friday, Aug. 15, on the Lake Natoma Inn property. The two-night event will allow beer lovers the experience to share the passion of craft beer with brewers. Read the full story inside. Be sure to also read up on local craft beers highlighted in this month’s signature Laura Newel drink feature. Breweries Associate Editor include Lockdown Brewing Co., American River Brewing Company and Mraz Brewing Company. Local designer Kerry Kelly and Chef Karen Holmes, of Karen’s Bakery, joined forces to help provide outdoor entertaining tips for people planning a summer house party. The story includes ideas on table decorating and easy grilling recipes. If you’d rather enjoy an outdoor patio outside of your home, I’ve explored local restaurants in El Dorado Hills offering live music on the patio. ith craft beer taking the nation by storm, Folsom is joining in the excitement with a new craft beer event this month. People can learn what the buzz is about from 6-10 p.m., Friday, Aug. 15, as Historic Folsom hosts its first craft beer event, Tap Folsom. “Craft beer is booming throughout the country. This is a great chance for the Folsom community to learn more about the craft beer industry and some of the great local and national beers that are making a name for themselves in the beer world,” said Michael Kennett, with the Folsom Chamber of Commerce. “We work very closely and have a wonderful relationship with DBI Beverage Distributing and as they continue to grow their craft beer division, this is an opportunity to help them do so in Folsom.” The event will also include an exclusive beer brewing experience at 5 p.m. on Aug. 14, called the Ultimate Brew Experience, Kennett said. The two-night event will allow beer lovers the experience to share the passion of craft beer with brewers, brew masters and avid home brewers, he said. The package allows people to brew four different styles of craft beer including porter, Belgian, pale ale and a New Experimental IPA, alongside James Murray, brew master for Ballast Point Brewing Company. People can discuss craft brewing techniques with Rick Piccirrilli from 21st Amendment Brewing, David Morrow, former brewer at Sudwerks Brewery. Guests will then receive a bottle of each beer brewed during the event upon the completion of fermentation, Kennett said. “This is truly an event for the ultimate beer geek,” Kennett said. “This is a really cool thing and will really set us apart from other craft beer events.” Thursday’s event includes a hosted dinner and craft beer pairings. Ultimate Brew Experience ticket also includes VIP admission to Friday night’s Tap Folsom event. “There are only 40 tickets available for this exclusive brewing experience,” Kennett said. “So don’t miss out and get your tickets early.” The Ultimate Brew Experience tickets are $100. On Friday, Aug. 15, Tap Folsom will highlight approximately 30 craft breweries, live music and food trucks on the Lake Natoma Inn property. Live music will include Humble Wolf, Thunder Cover and Midnight Players. The party will continue at Powerhouse Pub, Scarlet’s and Hampton’s On Sutter, all on Sutter Street, after Friday’s event. According to officials, there will be free admission for all Tap ticket holders with a wristband. “The craft beer movement is only going to continue to grow,” Kennett said. “It’s something that can no longer be ignored and it’s important for the Folsom community to familiarize itself with this growing trend. Plus, there are a number of great bars and restaurants in Folsom that are embracing the craft beer movement and it helps them to have more knowledgeable clientele that can truly appreciate what they are offering.” Tickets for Friday include $25 for general admission, $50 for the VIP experience and $100 for the Ultimate Brew Experience. he Elegant Evening Feast on Hinkle Creek will give locals the opportunity to spend an evening outdoors on the newly built 80 foot long bridge over Hinkle Creek in Folsom. The outdoor setting will sparkle with party lights and candle-lit tables for two set on the bridge spanning the creek, said Ken Menzer, Folsom City Arborist. The event will take place Aug. 22 and 23. The bridge was constructed by a group of volunteers and spans Hinkle Creek to provide bike and pedestrian access to existing trail segments. “We had 87 different volunteers working on the bridge since November 2013,” Menzer said. “It was completed on May 1. Many of the volunteers worked hundreds of hours over the months. All of the parts including 40 foot long glu-lam beams weighing around 700 pounds and a welded steel yoke weighing about 850 pounds, were all hand carried in by large groups of volunteers.” Hal Scheetz of Scheetz Welding, a local Folsom business, completed the steel fabrication and Brian Harrison was the structural engineer, Menzer said. The initial grant $5,000 was applied for from REI and received by the Friends of

Folsom Parkways, a local Folsom non-profit. According to Menzer, the “Friends” added additional matching grant funds to pay for half of the bridge and the City Parks Department funded the other half. The project was built under the volunteer direction of Menzer and Jim Konopka, Folsom’s senior park planner. “This dirt hiking trail is one of the few non-paved trails in Folsom,” Menzer said. “It has 50 trail markers to explain the natural history including the plants, trees, animals and environment.” Menzer said this was project was especially important for him. “As City Arborist, it is a part of my duty to educate our resident about caring for our trees. This bridge is a glorious path into the woods to experience what is slowly disappearing in our city, quietness,” he said. “The sound of silence is there, but maybe as a fluttering bird or the babbling noise of Hinkle Creek or the bark of a far off dog, it is pretty quiet. This nature setting does not require supplemental irrigation, making this a place to see what naturally grows here.” The “locavore” four-course dinner by Chef Arturo Vargas of the acclaimed “Taste for the Senses” catering firm features an innovative menu of appetizers, salad, main courses and dessert for The Elegant Evening Feast on Hinkle Creek. Main dish selections include vegetarian and gluten-free options. A no-host bar will also offer local wine, beer and hard cider and non-alcoholic drinks. Seating and drinks begins at 6 p.m. with appetizers at 6:30 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m., on Friday, Aug. 22 and Saturday Aug. 23. Each night’s dinner seats 120 people. Tickets are $60 per person. Diane Marshall, of El Dorado Hills, opened the dessert shop with co-owners Michael (Jake) Jackobsen and Dave Roberts. The restaurant carries 24 flavors of ice cream that are all made onsite and have our fresh cupcakes delivered from Cup Cake Craving. Jake’s Desserts are affiliated with Cupcake Craving. “We have so many delicious treats to choose from,” Marshall said. “Whether you want a scoop of ice cream, a specialty milkshake or our famous cow pie ice cream sandwich, you will find a favorite here.” Jake’s Desserts is located at 280 Palladio Parkway, in Folsom. he El Dorado County Ag in the Classroom will be holding a fundraiser, the 20 Mile Taste, on Saturday, Aug. 16. The event will help fund educational programs like Farm Day and Fields of Learning, which promote the importance of agriculture. Every May, El Dorado County Ag in the Classroom hosts hundreds of third-grade students at the fairgrounds for an interactive day of learning. According to Karen Owen, the executive director of Ag in the Classroom, this past May was the 13th annual Farm Day and hosted about 1,000 students from all over the county. Additionally, Ag in the Classroom has a Fields of Learning program, which pairs a school with a local farm, giving kids the chance to gain hands-on experience with agriculture. “Agriculture provides the essentials of life, and it’s important for kids to know where their food comes from,” said Owen. The 20 Mile Taste will feature some Farm Day activities, which will allow attendees to see what the kids learn in one of the Ag in the Classroom programs. It will also feature food and wine sourced from within a 20-mile radius of the event as well as a raffle and a live auction. According to Owen, the live auction will include a bicycle tour of Apple Hill provided by Placerville Bike Shop, a Holly’s Hill Vineyards Magnum of Patriarche and four tickets to their Patriarche party, a Single Leaf Magnum and wine glass basket and a Family Christmas Tree Cutting Adventure. The Caroll Tuttle Trio, a light jazz group, will be providing live music for the event. The 20 Mile taste will be building off of the sold-out success of last year’s event. As a non-profit organization, the El Dorado County Ag in the Classroom depends on the generous support of its sponsors and events like the 20 Mile Taste to continue providing educational opportunities for kids. he Cameron Park Community Foundation and the El Dorado County Food Bank will partner up to present the first Cameron Park Family Concert. It will be held from 5-8 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 2, at Cameron Park Lake. The concert is free for all residents and features music and dancing. Free food will also be provided by the El Dorado County Food Bank. The lagoon will be open for swimming. According to officials, people are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets and their own food and drinks for a picnic at the park. The Cameron Park Family Concert will showcase local musicians, Late for Dinner. The eight-piece El Dorado County band combines the sounds of Rastamerican Blues, Caribbean Pop and Reggae. According to one of the founding members of Late for Dinner, Dave Hamblen, the band has been together for almost 30 years. The music is described as up-tempo with a positive message, Hamblen said. “It’s about enjoying your life and being kind to one another,” said Hamblen. While it is the first year of the Cameron Park Family Concert, the organizer of the event and the president of the Cameron Park Community Foundation, Mark Harris, said they hope to make it an annual occurrence. The concert is a family friendly event for all ages and is a “thank you” to all of the residents of Cameron Park, said Harris. ne Way Productions is presenting an encore performance of the popular play, “The Hiding Place,” on Friday, Aug. 8, at the Harris Center in Folsom. This one-night only production will reunite the original cast under the direction of Ingrid Wilson, who is also the founder of One Way Productions. “I never bring back the same production two years in a row, but I had so many people in the audience who wanted to bring it back,” said Wilson. Talia Vlaovich, an Elly Award nominee for best actress in 2013, will be returning to the role of Corrie ten Boom, a woman who along with her father and sister hid persecuted Jewish families in her home during World War II. “I’m super excited to play this role again. It was a wonderful experience the first time around, and this time I am learning so much more about my character. I can connect with Corrie on a more emotional level this time around because I am able to look at her from a different angle,” Vlaovich said. “This is a true story of a Dutch family in Holland during WWII. It goes through the life of my character and shows how her life prepared her to survive the concentration camps and help other Jewish people along the way.” Today, Vlaovich works as a private music teacher at Vov Alta Studio, in Folsom. “My goal is to help my students learn some of the techniques that I have learned

spiritually and technically over the years,” she said. “I want to help pass my experience and information down to the next generation of performers.” Jim Shuler will also be reprising his role as Caspar ten Boom, Corrie’s father and a man with incredibly strong faith. “They (the ten Boom’s) trust very much in their faith and that they will get through any ordeal in life,” said Shuler. “I’ve learned you can face a lot of adversity in your life and you can’t really do it on your own. You have to rely on your family and faith.” According to Shuler, because this is the second time the play is being performed, the cast had time to more fully develop the characters. The play is based on a true story and was adapted from the book written by Corrie ten Boom and Elizabeth and John Sherrill, which was first published in 1971. Wilson was greatly inspired by the message of Corrie ten Boom’s story. “The Hiding Place is a story that needs to be told,” said Wilson. “It’s about doing the right thing despite the cost, and for me that is a great life lesson.” Because of the mature theme of the production, the play is not recommended for children under 11. he renowned classical performers, Di Wu and Adrian Daurov, will be featured in a special night in Folsom at the annual Classical Masters Music Festival at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 27. Wu had her professional debut as a classical pianist at 14 years old with the Beijing Philharmonic and went on to perform with orchestras in the U.S. and abroad. She also was a finalist at the 2009 Van Clibum competition, which is partnered with the Classical Masters Music Festival. Daurov made his debut at age 15 as a cellist with the St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra. He then went on to win top prizes at three international competitions in the U.S. and Europe. He performs in both recitals and orchestras as well as with pop artists such as Alicia Keys, Josh Groban and Sigur Ros. He has also been featured on Regis and Kelly Live, Good Morning America, The View and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. There is also a competition element to the festival, in which kids of all levels are given the opportunity to learn. It is open to the public on Sept. 27 and 28. There is no charge to watch the competition, but there will be a fee to attend the concert with Wu and Daurov. All competitors, teachers, parents and festival attendees also have the opportunity to attend one of the two masters classes. The Piano Masters Class will be taught by Wu and the Chamber Music Ensemble Master Class will be taught by Daurov. According to Ed Lee, president of the festival, Wu and Daurov

are remarkable not only for their musical talent, but also for their motivations behind coming out to the event. “They are all about helping the kids,” said Lee. Wu was a featured performer last year and wanted to show her continued support by coming out again. While the festival has only been established for four years, the event impacts numerous musicians. All of the funds earned support musicians in the community, including providing scholarships for kids. “It’s all about the community, it’s all about the children, it’s about providing them with a great opportunity…and whatever we get goes right back to the community” said Lee. The Classical Masters Music Festival concert featuring Wu and Daurov will be at the Harris Center at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 27. Tickets range from $19-$39 if purchased by Aug. 31 and range from $25-45 starting Sept. 1. There is a $5 discount on full priced tickets for students and seniors. BURRATA WITH GRILLED SUMMERTIME PEACH SALAD AND GRILLED BREAD

Serves two-increase the yield as needed prep-to-table time: 20 minutes Ingredients: 2 just-ripe peaches 1 piece of burrata cheese (a very soft specialty form of mozzarella cheese) A sprinkle of Aleppo Pepper, or just regular black pepper 1 baguette, or your favorite loaf of bread A handful of mixed greens, arugula, or any salad greens that you like Coriander vinaigrette (recipe follows), vinaigrette of your choice, or just oil and a lite vinegar Directions: Fire up the grill. Let that preheat while you get the food prepped. Prepare the dressing, set aside. Cut the peach in half, removing the stone. Brush each half with a little neutral oil (grapeseed, canola or ricebran oil). Set aside on a tray headed for the grill. Cut four slices out of the baguette. Cut them long, long, long on the diagonal, so the slices are very long. Cut a large garlic clove in half and rub each piece of bread very lightly with the cut garlic. Then brush the bread with the same oil you brushed on the peaches. Put the bread onto the tray with the peaches. Take the burrata out of the paper it came in. Drain any liquid. Tear it in half with your hands (it’s better when there are rough edges of the cheese exposed, more places for the good juices to creep into). Put it on a plate on your countertop to temper a bit while you do the grilling. Recipe continues on following page

To grill the peaches: Make sure your grill is clean. Scrub with a grill brush if necessary. Spraying with non stick spray is a good idea. Place the peaches face down on the grill. Don’t move them. Let the peaches sit on the grill until they easily release. That means the sugars in the peaches have caramelized and they will have a naturally sealed exterior, releasing from the grill easily. If you like, you can give them one quarter turn and let them grill again. This will give you a nice cross-hatch pattern, pretty for presentation, but not necessary for good eating. To grill the bread: Don’t take grilling bread lightly. Properly grilled bread is a delicious thing. Put the bread down on the grill and let it sit still, just as you did with the peach. If the grill catches fire, or there is excessive smoke, you want to remove the bread as it will make the bread grey from the smoke. Otherwise, just leave it until you have nice solid, sturdy grill marks. Now all you have left to do it plate the dinner: Keep it all pretty tight and close together (it looks prettier). Burrata in the middle, sprinkle of Aleppo Pepper over the cheese, two peach halves per plate, bread down and overlapping, and a little pile of nicely dressed greens on the plate.

Ingredients: 1 tablespoon coriander seeds 1 tablespoon Cumin Seeds 1 tablespoon Fennel Seeds Directions: Add all seeds to a small skillet and toast them. They are ready when the seeds become very aromatic. Remove from the skillet to a cutting board. Let cool. Begin to chop the seeds, and as they begin to go to powder, press them with the side of your knife to grind them into the cutting board. Keep scraping them together, and then mash them again. Soon you will have a lovely powder. Set aside. Whisk 1 cup of neutral oil or very light olive oil, 1/3 cup of white wine vinegar together. Whisk in 2 tablespoon’s of Dijon mustard. Then the toasted and ground seeds. Season to taste with Salt and pepper. Voila, vinaigrette.

fter a successful premier show last year, the Hot Jazz Jubilee returns to the Marriott Hotel in Rancho Cordova this Labor Day weekend with a full lineup of mostly traditional jazz performances running from Friday, August 29, through Monday, September 1. Festival Director Ken McMurray said ticket sales are ahead of last year, when 1,100 badges for the Saturday performances were sold. Attendance Friday, Sunday and Monday totaled “900 to 950, somewhere around there.” “We’re doing fine,” he said. “Last year, August was our busiest ticket sales month as more and more and more people found out about the Jubilee. We’re tracking ahead of last year.” Besides the draw of its scheduled performers, the festival also attracts trad jazz lovers by having a single major venue at the Marriott off Highway 50 and Sunrise Boulevard at 11211 Point East Drive. No long walks from venue to venue to catch acts. Added this year is a large tent set up in the Marriott parking lot, “just outside the hotel’s entry doors,” McMurray said, for the expected crowd overflow. It will have a capacity of 300 and will feature a stage and dance floor. Also new this year will be a jam session room across the street at the Hyatt Hotel, where performing musicians can sit in and play. Because of last year’s high turnout, the Marriott is reserving all of its 265 rooms for festival guests and offering special rates. Phone (916) 267-6713. The expo will help veterans find jobs, get small business/ Disabled Veteran Business Enterprise certification, get business training and find other veteranâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s services, including medical assistance. There will also be representatives from the Project Management Institute, the

International Institute of Business Analyses, local corporations and companies that will talk to veterans about job opportunities and local businesses offering free services for veterans. According to Jack Smith, veteran and 24 Entertainer

event organizer, two of the biggest challenges that veterans face are the lack of structure and dependability in civilian life and finding a job that is comparable to their previous military position. “In the military, everything is very ordered and the outside is not that way,” said Smith. “For those who had a defense type role, there isn’t really a comparable civilian position.” Veterans have to find a way to use the skills and tools they learned in the military, such as discipline and leadership qualities, and apply it to their new jobs. The Veteran’s Expo aims to help veterans with this transition to civilian life. “I’ve made a pretty graceful transition…and I really enjoy being able to share that with my fellow veterans,” said Smith. There will also be a country-themed barbecue following the expo on Saturday evening. All proceeds earned from the meal will be donated to the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars’ various children’s scholarship funds. The Veteran’s Expo will be at the Folsom Veteran’s Hall from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Aug. 22 and 23. The event is free for all veterans. The barbecue will be from 5 p.m.-11 p.m., Aug. 23. It is $12 for adults and $5 for children 6-12 years old. All members were animators at the Disney Studios. “We’ll open the Jubilee with a short parade, about a quarter of a mile, with an antique fire truck the Folsom Fire Department is providing,” McMurray said. “We’ll have local musicians, the Crescent Katz, on board dressed like the old Firehouse 5 and bring them down to the Marriott to make a grand entrance. They’ll play in the hotel portico to open the festival then move into the ballroom,” he said. The parade will begin at 1:30 on Friday and the Jubilee kicks off at 2 p.m. Two bands will play between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. at a wine and dance party. Music is scheduled Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to midnight and from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Special sets are booked for Saturday and Monday and there will be a Patron’s Lunch from noon to 1:30 p.m. Among the marquee trad jazz performers on the Jubilee program are the Bob Draga Quartet; Wally’s Warehouse Waifs; The Professors (instructors for a youth jazz camp); an old favorite, the Night Blooming Jazzmen; the Au Brothers; the Tepid Club of Cool, based in the Sierra foothills; and one of the few non-trad jazz musicians, Tom Rigney and Flambeau; Sister Swing; Yve Evans & Company and Blue Street JB. “The emphasis is on traditional jazz but we have one country group coming in, the Stardust Cowboys out of the Auburn area,” McMurray said. There will be six local area youth bands performing. “We have a big focus on providing youth musicians a venue and a chance to perform in public,” he said. A four-day entry badge is priced at $90 until August 1, then $100 thereafter; a Saturday badge is $50 and badges for Friday and Monday are $35. Student badges are $20. A Patron All-Event badge, which includes preferred seating, is $230. All badges may be picked up at Marriott Hotel festival booth beginning at noon on Friday and continuing through the weekend. hat started out as a way to recognize the work put in by members of the football team has also turned into a fundraiser for the Folsom High football program. On Aug. 22, the ninth annual Meet the Bulldogs event will be held at 6 p.m. at the Folsom Community Center. The event includes dinner, live auction, silent auction and dessert auction as well as the introduction of the football teams. “When we first came up with the idea, it was to bring the community together and recognize the football players for all their hard work,” said Kelly Richardson, wife of co-head coach Kris Richardson. “The varsity players are recognized individually, and that can be motivating for kids on the younger levels and encourage them to work for what they want (to some day be on the varsity team).” As the event evolved, it has become the program’s largest fundraiser. More than 400 people attend the event annually and many attend the event every year, even if they don’t have kids in the program. Last year’s event sold out. Parents and businesses donate items for the auctions, which help bring in funds for the program. “It’s a huge fundraising event to support the program,” Folsom varsity co-head coach Troy Taylor said. “Secondly, it brings the families together and we recognize the kids. It helps to get the people excited about the upcoming season. It’s become a big, fun event.” The players and parents enjoy the event. “It’s a social event for the parents,” Folsom quarterback Jake Browning said. “They enjoy it. At the end of the day, it’s a fundraiser.” Folsom lineman Cody Creason added, “I like it a lot. It helps raise money for the program and people seem to enjoy it. Meet the Trojans For the fifth year, Oak Ridge High will introduce their football teams to the El Dorado Hills community at the Meet the Trojans event on Aug. 9 The event begins at 4 p.m. at the Steven Young Amphitheater at Town Center. The event not only includes the players on the varsity, junior varsity and freshman teams, but the Jr. Trojans youth football and cheer program is also involved, as well as the high school cheer squad. receive schedule cards, the cheer squad will perform and there will also be a hot dog eating contest and a raffle, as well. “What’s good about it is that it brings the entire community together from the youth football players all the way up to the varsity team and the cheerleaders,” Oak Ridge assistant coach Mark Watson said. “It’s just a way to kick off the football season. It’s a well done affair and everyone gets into it.” Ryan Sullivan, a senior tight end and defensive end, enjoys the event. “Personally, and as a team, we love it,” Sullivan said. “It’s a great opportunity for the team to come out and show the community the new Trojan teams. This year it will be really good because we only have 19 seniors and a lot of new faces. We have a very young team and this is a great way to introduce the team to the community.” One of the best parts of the event is the enthusiasm shown by the community. “At the end when the entire team is standing out there and you see how many people are there and the support they give us, you realize how much we mean to the community,” Sullivan said.

My wife, Linda and I, try to have our “catch up on the week date” here every Friday evening for happy hour. We enjoy the Folsom location of Chops and are treated like family by Katie who greets us so warm and friendly, Randy, and his staff always make us feel special while we wait for our drinks (I recommend ‘Dead Guy’ IPA) and appetizers. When you do come for dinner or happy hour be sure to say hi to Jose, Luis, Chloe, Janelle, Sarah... oh and Scotty has yet to beam us up. I’m sure I missed someone but to date we have been treated like family by all! Everything we have tried has been awesome! LOVE this place! You can taste in the food that it is prepared with passion. I love the green curry with scallops and my bf does yellow curry with chicken.
