The unincorporated area of Baldwin Lake is located in the eastern end of Big Bear Valley where the original Lake Big Bear, named by Benjamin Davis Wilson, existed. When the Big Bear Lake reservoir was created in 1884, the eastern lake was renamed Baldwin Lake, after Elias Jackson “Lucky” Baldwin. Lucky Baldwin was a gold miner who purchased and operated Gold Mountain Mine in the 1800s. Shay Meadow Ranch is on the south “shore” of Baldwin Lake, and is one of the historic cattle ranches that were in the area in the early 1900s. On the northwest shore of the dry lake is the Baldwin Lake Ecological Reserve. The pebble plains, a unique ecological system, can be found nearby with several plants and wildflowers that can only be found in Big Bear Valley. There have been several real estate ventures in Baldwin Lake throughout the history of the Valley. Baldwin Lake had its own post office not once, but twice, in 1916-17 and 1924-1931. Homes and horse properties dot the landscape today. Baldwin Lake Stables is located in the neighborhood, providing horseback riding along San Bernardino National Forest trails. Baldwin Lake is one of the most rural in Big Bear Valley with each property responsible for much of its utilities, including water and sewer. The Baldwin Lake Fire Department, once a volunteer department, now runs under the Big Bear City Community Services District banner, and provides fire protection services to the community.

With a population of 9,882, Big Bear City is the largest town in Big Bear Valley. Big Bear City is an unincorporated community surrounded east of Big Bear Lake. It’s western boundary is defined by Division Drive. Historically, Big Bear City’s claim to fame was the Peter Pan Woodland Club and Pan Hot Springs Inn in the early 1900s. The Peter Pan Woodland Club was built to promote the new community of Big Bear City in 1930. The entrance to the community was at Big Bear Boulevard and Division Drive, where twin bear statues stood holding an arch over the street. The two bears are still there, but moved to the side at the corner on the Twin Bear Rental property. Primarily residential, Big Bear City’s business district mainly runs along Big Bear Boulevard and around the Big Bear City Airport. The Community Arts Theater Society’s home is located in Big Bear City at the CATS Warehouse. The Big Bear Valley Historical Society’s Museum is also in Big Bear City.

Big Bear Valley was inhabited by the indigenous Serrano Indians for more than 2,000 years before it was explored by Benjamin Wilson and his party. Once the home of California grizzly bears, the area grew rapidly during the Southern California Gold Rush 1861-1912. Grizzly bears were hunted to extinction in the area by 1908. Big Bear Lake lays claim to the world’s second bus line, which went from San Bernardino to Big Bear Valley using White trucks in the early 1900s. As a resort town, Big Bear Lake has long attracted the Hollywood in crowd. Cecil B. DeMille, Shirley Temple, Mel Blanc, Roy Rogers and Ginger Rogers were homeowners and frequent visitors. A long list of movies since the beginning of the industry have been filmed in Big Bear Lake. Big Bear Lake is a year-round resort with boating, fishing, hiking and mountain biking in the summer, fall and spring, and The Village is the city of Big Bear Lake’s downtown shopping district. skiing, snowshoeing and snowboarding in the winter. Big Bear Lake is home to the Big Bear Lake Oktoberfest, the Big Bear Lake International Film Festival, the Big Bear Lake Antique Car Club Fun Run, numerous fishing tournaments and Tour de Big Bear bicycle ride. The Amgen Tour of California pro cycling race is back for its third Big Bear stage in 2015. The shopping district known as the Village area of Big Bear Lake, features restaurants, lodging, unique shops and live entertainment venues. Services are provided by Bear Valley Electric, Southwest Gas, the Big Bear Lake Department of Water and Power, Big Bear Fire Department, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department and the city of Big Bear Lake.
