Fawnskin Once an artist colony in the late 19th century through the early 1900s, Fawnskin is a small village on Grout Creek on the North Shore of Big Bear Lake with a full-time population of 300. There was an early stage stop in Fawnskin in the 1800s. Soon there were several lodges, camps and restaurants lining the road, which at the time was the main way into the Valley. Fawnskin’s trademark downtown landmark is the once-bustling Fawn Lodge, built in 1924 but closed since the 1970s. Other landmarks include the Pedersen Saw Mill and Fawn Park, with a memorial to those who lost their lives at the Twin Towers Sept. 11, 2001. The village is also home to the world’s shortest parade, the Fawnskin Doo Dah Parade.

Moonridge The community of Moonridge encompasses neighborhoods within the incorporated city of Big Bear Lake and unincorporated Big Bear City. Once part of the IS Ranch known as the Upper IS, the property was purchased in 1923 for a subdivision that included the 18-hole Spaulding Golf and Country Club. Early in the project, a contest was held to give a new name to the division. A lot was awarded to the winner for the name, Moonridge. The Moonridge business corridor features lodging and restaurants along Moonridge Road leading to and from Bear Mountain Ski Resort and Golf Course. Moonridge is also the home of the Big Bear Alpine Zoo, a rescue and wild animal sanctuary established in 1959. The Big Bear Alpine Zoo is a rehabilitation and release facility. Animals that cannot be released back into the wild have a home at the zoo.

Sugarloaf An unincorporated community south of Big Bear City, Sugarloaf has a convenience store, fire station, restaurant and post office. Nearby are Baldwin Lane Elementary School and Big Bear High School. Primarily a residential community, Sugarloaf has its own road services special district operated by San Bernardino County Special Districts. The neighborhoods feature small lots and homes in a mostly wooded and hilly area. Sugarloaf Park features a running/exercise trail and a skate park. Sugarloaf gets its name from the nearby mountain Sugarloaf, the tallest peak in Big Bear Valley with an elevation of 9,952 feet.
