The Gift of Unconditional Love Can the recipient afford it?

Gifting a pet to a senior seems like the perfect idea, especially after their spouse or partner passes away. However, this loving idea can go awry if the person cannot afford the pet resulting in neglect for the animal, as well as frustration for the owner.

tant to research the pet’s behavioral, care and health history. Keep in mind that average pet costs, not counting additional spending for toys, treats or nonroutine veterinary care, can be daunting. For example, the ASPCA currently estimates that a large dog may cost roughly $1,800 in his or her first year and $780 a year afterward. That doesn’t include potential bills for major illness or accident care that might run into the thousands. If that dog lives eight to 10 years, that means spending a minimum of between $7,260 and $8,820 over a lifetime.

Just as sad, there are documented cases where the tables are turned and the pet owner forgoes food in order to feed their new companion, simply because they can’t afford both. The Coachella Valley is teeming with organizations that will help you adopt a cute and cuddly companion that has been spayed or neutered, vaccinated and micro chipped. This perfect furry friend you’re sure will please the recipient, but can they afford it? Or do you plan on supporting the pet?

and advanced medical options for American pets have pushed U.S. pet industry expenditures to almost $60 billion in 2014, nearly double the amount in 2004.

Many homeowners and renters should also check with their insurers for potential pet restrictions that may raise their premiums or risk voiding their coverage. Certain types of breeds may be considered higher-risk among some insurers, so before a pet purchase or adoption, prospective pet owners should check their home or rental policies to see how the animal will affect the pricing or availability of coverage.

Dear Françoise,

Sometimes I’ll be reading news items on the web or browsing the

I thought you did a great job with the cover story Coffee with a Cop. Being married to a police officer for over 30 years, the stories I heard about how people treat police officers was alarming. It takes a certain type of individual to be a policeman, and I’ll admit there are some bad officers out there, but overall the majorities are hardworking individuals who put their lives on the line daily (especially in this day and age).

numerous press releases I receive when a sentence or two will strike

I appreciate everything our police officers do, and hope readers will take advantage of the meet and greet.

For those of you rocking out to Coachella Fest;-) I hope you’re hav-

me funny. I started thinking about the people I know that recently adopted pets, and it made me wonder…….did they do the math to see if they can afford the pet? Poof!! That is how the cover story was born. I hope it sheds some light on the expenses of unconditional love……that truly is priceless!

Dear Annick, I totally agree with you and thank you for the compliment. I’m sure life was very interesting being married to a police officer, as I remember it was being the daughter of one. Regards, Françoise

The weather is gorgeous, enjoy yourselves and please spread the word that the paper is now online at www.desertmobilehomenews.com Peace & Love……..

Sand Dabs with Warm Garlic, Parsley, and Red Wine Vinegar Dressing

INGREDIENTS • 4-1/2 oz. (1 cup) all-purpose flour, for dusting • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper • 1 – ½ lbs., filet of sand dabs, sole or flounder fillets • About 1 cup extra-virgin olive oil • 12 garlic scapes, small heads green garlic, or small scallions, trimmed to about 4 inches • 20 medium morel mushrooms • 1/4 cup chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley • 6 Tbs. red wine vinegar • Lemon wedges, to serve

DIRECTIONS 1. Put the flour on a large plate and season with salt and pepper. Pat the fish dry and dredge lightly in the seasoned flour, shaking off any excess. 2. Heat 2 Tbs. of the oil in a 12-inch, heavy-duty, skillet over medium-high heat until shimmering hot. Cook the fish in batches without crowding until golden and crisp, 2 to 3 minutes a side for fillets, and transfer to paper towels to drain. 3. Wipe the pan clean and add more oil between batches as needed. 4. Heat 3/4 cup of the oil, the garlic scapes, green garlic or scallions, and morels in a saucepan over medium heat until the green garlic is just starting to color, 3 to 4 minutes. Transfer the morels to a small bowl. Add the red wine vinegar and cook 1 minute. Return the morels to the pan, remove from the heat, and season with salt and pepper. 5. Place the fish on a serving platter, and spoon over the skillet dressing. 6. Serve with the lemon wedges. **Send your favorite recipe to the editor and if published, win a $25 gift certificate to a local restaurant. news@dmhnews.com April 16, 2015

It Works! Toilet Bowl Calcium Deposits Vinegar - cheap, natural, white vinegar - is the best tool you can use to combat those every day hard water spots that keep your surfaces from gleaming. Prepare a 50/50 mixture of water and white vinegar in the container of choice. •Be sure to use regular white vinegar. Apple cider vinegar and other types of vinegar won’t do the trick.
