Red, White & Blue Firecracker Cake

INGREDIENTS • 1 box white cake mix • Water • Oil • Egg whites • Red food color • Blue food color • 1 container (12 oz) whipped fluffy white frosting

DIRECTIONS 1. Heat oven to 325°F. Generously grease 12-cup fluted tube cake pan. Make cake batter as directed on box, using water, oil and egg whites. 2. Pour 1 cup of the batter into small bowl; stir in red food color until well mixed. 3. Pour another cup of the batter into separate bowl; stir in blue food color until well mixed. 4. Pour red cake batter into bottom of pan. Carefully pour remaining white batter over red batter in pan. Carefully pour blue batter over white batter. (Blue batter does not need to cover white batter completely; it looks better if it just forms a ring in the center of the white batter.) 5. Bake as directed on box or until toothpick inserted near center comes out clean. Cool cake 5 minutes. 6. Meanwhile, place cooling rack over cookie sheet. Turn pan upside down onto cooling rack. Cool cake completely, about 30 minutes. 7. When cake is cool, divide frosting evenly into 3 microwavable bowls. Microwave 1 bowl of frosting uncovered on High a few seconds until smooth enough to drizzle over cake. With spoon, drizzle all of white frosting back and forth around cake in a striping pattern. 8. Repeat microwaving second bowl of frosting until smooth. Stir in a few drops blue food color until well blended. Drizzle over cake, scattering frosting back and forth. 9. Repeat with remaining bowl of frosting and red food color, making sure red, white and blue frosting’s can be seen on cake. 10. Let cake stand at room temperature until frosting is set before serving. **Send your favorite recipe to the editor and if published, win a $25 gift certificate to a local restaurant. news@dmhnews.com

ARIES (March 21-April 19). You honor timelines and commitments, and that’s why you’re such an integral part of your team. Without you, the goods wouldn’t be delivered in as timely a fashion.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). Is it easier for you to forgive an enemy or a friend? This is the question you’ll face now, because you realize that to move forward, you’re going to have to forgive someone.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20). Sometimes sighing is an expression of letting go, and other times sighing is an indicator of psychic pain and longing. Right now, your sigh is one of relief. You did the work. Now rest.

SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). You’ll be teaching others, and you have a knack for imparting your knowledge effectively. The trick is to make it as simple as possible but not any simpler than that.

GEMINI (May 21-June 21). You can take appropriate feedback, but you’re not sure the criticism coming at you today fits that description. It certainly doesn’t feel appropriate, and it’s not coming from anyone who knows and has been there. CANCER (June 22-July 22). Regarding a certain female in your life: You have long forgotten the root of your anger. If that doesn’t qualify for a good reason to let it go, what does? LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). You’ll reach your destination as long as you have a specific point to aim for and a crew to help you get there. Today is for making strategic partnerships. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). Listening intently is one of the greatest gifts you can give. You’ll find it easy to do because you are so genuinely fascinated with the person who comes into your realm today.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). When you know you’re right, you stay your course regardless of the danger, though you prefer to avoid peril when possible. When you’re not sure, don’t feel pressured to make a decision. Learn all that you can. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). Intentional or not, when people interrupt or break eye contact, it doesn’t feel good to the other person. Knowing this, you give others a quality of attention that’s stellar. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). Some talk and others do. The person who can deliver on both the conversational and practical levels will be hard to find now, so decide what’s most important to you. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). Keep an open mind, because if you stay somewhat flexible, your plans are likely to give way to something bigger. A well-timed collaboration will yield results and be worth the patience it takes to pursue.
