Thanks Mom! The official Mother’s Day holiday arose in the 1900s as a result of the efforts of Anna Jarvis, daughter of Ann Reeves Jarvis. Following her mother’s 1905 death, Anna Jarvis conceived of Mother’s Day as a way of honoring the sacrifices mothers made for their children.

Here in the Coachella Valley it’s easy to offer Mom the ultimate Mother’s Day of Days. From our fabulous spas to a day on the golf course, the possibilities are endless. Surprise her with maid service for a day, or have a limousine service driver her and her friends around town for a day of shopping, lunch and finish it off with a movie. For some a simple card and flowers is all Mom needs. Whatever you decide, do it with love and while you are at it, impress her with your Moth-

er’s Day knowledge. Mother’s Day is observed in different forms throughout the world. The American incarnation of Mother’s Day was created by Anna Jarvis in 1908 and became an official U.S. holiday in 1914. While dates and celebrations vary, Mother’s Day most commonly falls on the second Sunday in May and traditionally involves presenting mothers with flowers, cards and other gifts.

Tee-Off Golf Tournament - pg.5

Following the success of her first Mother’s Day, Jarvis - who remained unmarried and childless her whole life—resolved to see her holiday added to the national calendar. Arguing that American holidays were biased toward male achievements, she started a massive letter writing campaign to newspapers and prominent politicians urging the adoption of a special day honoring motherhood. By 1912 many states, towns and churches had adopted Mother’s Day as an annual holiday, and Jarvis had established the Mother’s Day International Association to help promote her cause. Her persistence paid off in 1914 when President Woodrow Wilson signed a measure officially establishing the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.

In the years before the Civil War (1861-65), Ann Reeves Jarvis of West Virginia helped start “Mothers’ Day Work Clubs” to teach local women how to properly care for their children. These clubs later became a unifying force in a region of the country still divided over the Civil War. In 1868 Jarvis organized “Mothers’ Friendship Day,” at which mothers gathered with former Union and Confederate soldiers Happy Mother’s Day! to promote reconciliation

Huell Howser Exhibit At Chapman College The joy that the late Huell Howser shared with generations of Californians infuses a new permanent exhibit, sponsored by the Automobile Club of Southern California, housed in Chapman University’s Leatherby Libraries. The exhibit includes images, text, and artifacts, which outline Howser’s career and legacy in California. For most of three decades Howser traveled throughout California in search of the inspiring and offbeat, the wonderful and amazing. The university holds all of Howser’s art collection, books, the unedited tapes used to create 900 to 1,000 TV episodes, DVDs of all his shows, and at Huellhowserarchives. com are all of the shows in digital and searchable formats.

May 7, 2015

The exhibit features photos and text that tell the story of his life, from his boyhood in Gallatin, Tenn. to his early TV news career at WSM-TV in Nashville to his ultimate landing at KCET-TV and PBS stations everywhere. Other parts of the exhibit include time lines of his varied TV series, including “California’s Gold”; a re-creation of his office; and a memorabilia display that includes items such as the Olympic torch he once ran with. The floor of the exhibit features a massive map of California with spots where Howser filmed episodes, an expanse that stretches from the Imperial Valley to the northernmost coast. Fresh Fruit and Mint Salad

INGREDIENTS • 1 papaya or mango • 1 cup strawberries • 2 kiwis • 1 banana • 2 navel oranges

• 3 tablespoons honey • 1 tablespoon Grand Marnier, optional • 3 to 5 sprigs fresh mint • 1 cup raspberries or blueberries

DIRECTIONS 1. Peel and dice the mango or papaya, and put in a medium bowl. Trim the strawberries’ stems and half or quarter, if large. Add to the bowl of fruit. Peel and dice the kiwi, add to bowl. Peel and slice the bananas, add to bowl. 2. Cut the top and bottom off the oranges just deep enough to expose the inner fruit. Following the curve of the fruit cut the skin and pith off the orange in panels. Holding the orange over the bowl cut between the membranes to free the citrus segments. Let them fall into the bowl as they are cut free. By hand, squeeze all the juice from the remaining membrane over the fruit, then discard. Repeat with the other orange. 3. Lightly stir the honey and Grand Marnier, if using, into the fruit. Strip the mint leaves off the stem, tear, or chop into smaller pieces, and stir into the fruit salad. Add the berries and set aside for 10 minutes or up to 2 hours. **Send your favorite recipe to the editor and if published, win a $25 gift certificate to a local restaurant. news@dmhnews.com
