Honoring Dad By Françoise Rhodes, Editor Since we gave Mom her due for Mother’s Day, Dad it’s your turn. Families tend to look at Father’s Day just a little different, instead of flowers for Dad we think of tools, instead of a day of pampering we think of a day of sports. Any way you look at

it, it’s all about a special day for the father figure in our lives. So how did Father’s Day begin?

Scholars believe that the origin of Father’s Day is not a latest phenomenon, as many believe it to be. Rather they claim that the tradition of Father’s Day can be traced in the ruins of Babylon. Records show that a young boy called Elmesu carved a Father’s Day message on a card made out of

clay nearly 4,000 years ago. Elmesu wished his Babylonian father good health and a long life. Though there is no record of what happened to Elmesu and his father the tradition of celebrating Father’s Day remained in several countries all over the world. Modern version of Father’s Day originated in Sonora Dodd’s mind when she per chance listened to Mother’s Day sermon in 1909. Fairly mature at the age 27, Dodd pondered if there is a day to honor mother then why not for father? Feeling strongly for fathers because of the affection she received from her own father Mr. William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran, Dodd’s mother died while at childbirth when she was just 16. Mr. Smart raised the newborn and five other children with love and care. Inspired by Ms. Anna Jarvis’s struggle to promote Mother’s Day, Dodd began a rigorous campaign to celebrate Father’s Day in US. Continued on page 12

Notes from the Editor

Hi Francoise, I don’t know if anyone has sent you get well wishes, so I thought I would. I had a summer cold also, but in spring, and it was awful and took a long time to get rid of the cough. I drank a lot of hot tea and it seemed to help, and I went to the doctor.

Dear Readers, First and foremost I’m wishing Father’s everywhere, in every capacity a Happy Father’s Day! Note the Father’s Day mentions throughout the paper. So now that I think you have heard enough about me not feeling well, I’ll tell you about something I did during the week sick and all, and that was go to the Pageant of the Masters Media Night.

Get well soon, Doreen

Hi Doreen, Thank you so much for the well wishes, and thank you to everyone to told me to go to the doctor and not to goof around with this (all suggestions were in my best interest.) I’ll be frank, I didn’t go to the doctor and this thing keeps hanging on. So, if in a couple of days I’m not feeling at least 95% of my normal self I’ll be dialing

If you’ve never been, this coincides with the Festival of the Arts and the Sawdust Festival in Laguna Beach. It was very exciting to see how the Pageant of the Masters is accomplished, the behind the scenes showed us from set design to costumes, makeup and finally getting the figures in the set and ready for the reveal. Such a time consuming task for 90 seconds on stage, however it’s well worth it for the audience. The theme this year is The pursuit of Happiness and starts in July and runs through August.

Riddle: A teacher named Ms. Goodwin asks her third grade class if it’s anyone’s birthday that day and, to her surprise, even though there are 30-something kids in the class, no one raises their hand. Ms. Goodwin then asks, “Well, is there anyone here who has a family member whose birthday it is today?” And little Katie raises her hand and says, “As a matter of fact, today is my father’s birthday, and it’s also my grandfather’s birthday.” The teacher says, “Oh really, how interesting.” Little Katie goes on to say, “And they’re the same age.” The teacher says, “Oh, no, no, Katie, that can’t be.” And Katie insists, oh, yes, they are the same age. So the question is: Can it be and, if so, how?

Retirement - No Thanks! For many retirement is an option, an option that soon becomes boring. If retirement isn’t for you, mentally or financially, here are a few suggestions that might bring both money and excitement back in your life. • Cruise ship employment. This is an ideal way to combine a part-time job with pleasure. The ships provide room and board and the use of their facilities when the workers are not plying their trade. Possible jobs onboard cruise ships include golf instructors, scuba diving/water sports instructors, bridge instructors, arts and crafts instructors, caricature artists, dance instructors and photographers.

The main purpose of a virtual assistant is to assist busy business executives who do not have inhouse staff to attend to various administrative functions. The duties of an assistant include making travel arrangements, sending out letters and providing other support services, which are easily handled remotely via email and telephone.

PUZZLES & HOROSCOPE

Answers: Sodoku, p.15, Crossword, p.15

HOROSCOPE • JUNE 18 - JUNE 24 ARIES (March 21-April 19). The saying is that “no news is good news,” and yet more often “no news” is neither good nor bad; it just doesn’t involve you. Go where the communication naturally flows back to you.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). You started at your goal and planned backward. Now you’re finding that several of the steps took longer and cost more than expected. Adjust the plan; don’t abandon it. This will still work.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20). You have many friends, but sometimes it seems like you lack that one who gets you. That’s why it’s wonderful today when you tell your story and it is met with the response you were going for.

SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). You don’t have to whack your way through the weeds, because there’s a path. Ask around to find out where it is. Someone would love to guide you.

GEMINI (May 21-June 21). You’re not a shallow thinker, but it’s often more efficient to make assumptions based on the surface evidence. Make an effort to doing some research that you believe will be a waste of time. Tonight, it won’t be.

June 18, 2015

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). When you say “yes” to one thing, you are closing yourself off to all the other options. It’s scary, but it’s right. Make a commitment. Instead of restricting you, the decision will liberate you.

CANCER (June 22-July 22). You can’t be everywhere, and even if you could be, it wouldn’t do you any good. As the Roman philosopher Seneca said, “To be everywhere is to be nowhere.”

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). Usually, you get a better perspective by backing off of your problem. Today is different. Getting closer will help you more. Bring your emotional magnifying glass to the situation and figure out what’s really going on.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). Think about what you are creating. When you find yourself focusing on what you need and want instead, correct your brain by gently telling your mind to go back to building on what you have.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). The people some consider to be lost souls look more like free spirits to you. You’ve always been drawn to nontraditional thinkers, and that’s why you’ve amassed such an eclectic group of friends.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). The confusion is strong, and it comes from having too many choices. What would please you the most? What would do the most good for those around you? What feels right? Trust your answers.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). Don’t be fooled into thinking you’re getting the inside scoop. What you’ll hear is the world according to the person speaking. There are many different truths to a situation. Listen without judgment.

Other Theories of Father’s Day Origin: •Some believe that the first Fathers Day church service was held in West Virginia in 1908. •Others opine that the ceremony was first held in Vancouver, Washington. •The president of Lions’ Club, Chicago, Harry Meek is said to have celebrated the first Father’s Day with his organization in 1915 to stress on the need to honor fathers. He selected third Sunday in June for celebration, the closest date to Meek’s own birthday. In appreciation for Meek’s work, the Lions Clubs of America presented him with a gold watch, with the inscription “Originator of Father’s Day,” on his birthday, June 20, 1920. •Some historians honor Mrs. Charles Clayton of West Virginia, as the Founder of Father’s Day. •In 1957, Senator Margaret Chase Smith wrote Congress
