5 things to avoid when booking vacations online

By Françoise Rhodes, Editor Americans spend a significant portion of their income on summer vacations. A recent study shows the average vacation expense per person in the United States is $1,145, or $4,580 for a family of four. Forty-three percent of all trav-

el in the United States is now booked online, with leisure travelers frequently booking their own travel, however what they don’t know about booking online can cost them money. Savvy Traveler Tips: 1. Relying Upon Low Price Guarantees. Shoppers should scru-

tinize the wording of the guarantee. In most cases, the online travel agency (OTA) guarantees only that the traveler is getting the lowest advertised price. However, many of the best prices for hotel rooms and flights are secured by private agreements, with the stipulation that these discounts cannot be advertised to the public.

2. Assuming OTA Sites are Competitors. Users of online travel agencies have a great many travel sites to choose from, yet most seem to have the same rooms and flights at similar prices.

Can you believe this July weather we are having! I recently was in Laguna Beach for the Pageant of the Masters, (fabulous show this season) and by the end of the evening there was a slight chill in the air. I drove home that same night and at midnight we had a slight chill in the air here in the desert, it was lovely. For all of you Lake Turtle aficionado’s I had a turtle lay eggs over by my air conditioner. She laid the eggs at the end of April and

covered them up. I had a hutch built so when the babies hatch the crows and such won’t eat them before they get to the lake (quite a ways away for the little guys.) The ground seems so hard, is there anything I should do to soften it up? The internet says not to keep it damp. Please help. Gotta run, need to check on the hutch………..

Summer heat precautions for hikers As summer temperatures heat up and hiking enthusiasts continue to hit the local trails, the Palm Springs Fire Department is recommending residents and visitors take extra precautions to ensure everyone comes home safely. Here are a few important tips for residents and visitors hiking in the heat: • Start Early. It’s best to hike between 5:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. when it is cooler. • Hike with a buddy. In case of emergency, it’s always best to have a friend with you. • Cover Up. Long sleeves are your friend. The more your body can shield from the sun, the better. Wear a wide-brimmed hat and remember to shield your eyes with UV-blocking sunglass-

es and apply sunscreen. • Stay Hydrated. Bring more water than you think you’ll need and drink often! • Bring snacks. • Remember to rest. Take frequent breaks and find shade so your body can cool down. • Know the signs of heat stroke. Common signs are headache, dizziness, muscle cramps, nausea, disorientation. If you experience these symptoms turn back or call for help. Don’t hesitate to call 911. • Take your cell phone. Make sure it is fully charged.

PUZZLES & HOROSCOPE

Answers: Sodoku, p.11, Crossword, p.11

HOROSCOPE • JULY 16 - JULY 22 ARIES (March 21-April 19). Superstitions may not be scientific, but they are an integral part of your experience, and something about them fits the way your mind works. Connections can be precarious. If you believe it, you’ll see it. If you don’t, you won’t. TAURUS (April 20-May 20). A lot of serious developments come out of silly things. So don’t be afraid to be a bit silly. Also, anyone who brings out this side of you is bringing out something essential and good. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). Some say there is no cure for curiosity. You almost wish there were some kind of exciting distraction to divert your attention from the thing that captivates you against your will. CANCER (June 22-July 22). You were at least partially formed in the small struggles of youth. They prepared you for the bigger challenges. Alas, it’s not time for that. This is the period of smooth sailing. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). You’ve already chosen the task. Now all you want are powers that are equal to or greater than it. You will get what you want in time. Today’s exercise will help. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). Untrustworthy people will say whatever they think will get them out of a bad situation or into a desired one. Trustworthy people will say what is, and they also will live it.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). Maybe you’re emotionally fragile now, so it’s good to have people around you who agree with you. Otherwise, you prefer opposition. It is, after all, much more useful. It’s how you become great at what you do. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). Relationships are important. Material possessions remind you of relationships, and that’s why you find them so important. Without meaning, this property has no value to you. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). Every day you wake up to a new day. But you’re not always as excited about the possibilities as you are on this day. You are practically vibrating with potential. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). Lately you’ve been questioning your lifestyle. Do the things around you really add value to your life, or are they just taking up space? It turns out you need a lot less than you think you do. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). Some of your favorite people are those who know how to temper your dreams with a healthy dose of reality. It’s the earth signs who help you keep realistic expectations when your eyes are bigger than your budget. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). Sometimes the bad ideas go undetected for a while, and you wind up putting a fair amount of work into them before you realize the problem. Once you realize it, though, stop immediately. Don’t throw good efforts after a bad idea.

“Look-Out” for desert tortoises on roadways With an early monsoon season upon us, visitors may be seeing Desert Gopher Tortoises on the roadways in and near Joshua Tree National Park as they search out puddles from which to drink. Because of their presence on the roads, tortoises are extremely vulnerable to being hit by cars. In order to educate the public, the park has produced a video on, “when and how”, to safely move a tortoise out of the road. Keep

in mind; they should only be handled in emergency situations. The URL for the video is https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=QmLfl_yAERY . This video also marks the official launch of the park’s new YouTube channel. There are already several videos uploaded and the park intends to continue to create more.
