Why senior centers matter
By Peter Rittenhouse If you’re like most folks in the Coachella Valley you came here to vacation, retire, or simply to get away from the cold! Some of us came for jobs and when we retired, we decided to stay. I’d like to make you aware of an often overlooked resource in your own community, the local Senior Center. They are called by many
names, and you’ve probably heard of one or two, but did you know that there are nine here in the Coachella Valley? Each one is unique and offers a varied program of activities. Some are membership organizations; some are pay for services; and some are free, so shop around.

Notes from the Editor
Dear Francoise, Thank you for the recipes. I love to cook and am always looking for something different to try. You had a Caribbean Chicken Salad a couple of weeks back that was very good. If I recall you post recipes if we send them in. I think I’ll wait for my snowbird friends to return and send you an old family recipe. Here’s to good food! Sally B, Rancho Mirage
Hi Sally, I love to eat!!! I’m a “in the mood” type of cook, whereas I can easily eat out instead of cooking. However when the mood strikes, I enjoy being in the kitchen. In response to your question about sending recipes in, yes please send them and when we publish it, you will receive and nice surprise in the mail. Cheers............Françoise Send notes to the Editor to: Françoise Rhodes Editor/Desert Mobile Home News Email: news@dmhnews.com Mail: 41-995 Boardwalk, Suite L2 Palm Desert CA 92211 Fax: (760) 776-5733
Not that I’m trying to repeat myself from last week’s notes, but what a crazy two days of weather. First we start with high winds on Friday afternoon, followed by a white-out caused by a haboob, thunder and lightning all night long only to wake up to a glorious day of rain! This rainstorm we didn’t shy away from. I saw drivers with their windows down, people walking around without umbrellas getting wet as if it was sunny, golfers golfing and the dry desert ground soaking it up……ahhhhhhhh…so nice. Something else I did that was very nice and I am proud that Palm Springs is part of, is the Special Olympics Torch Run. The torch run kicked-off the host city week for athletes from Bahrain and Portugal. Mother Nature does know when to stop, because as the runners took off the skies cleared and the rained turned to a light sprinkle, only to start up again once the runners where inside the PS Convention Center. Please welcome these athletes as they enjoy our valley. It is as exciting for them to be here, as it is for us to be honored with their presence. Have a wonderful week………

Puzzle: You’re on a drug regimen that requires you to take one pill a day from each of two bottles, “A” and “B”. One day you tap one pill into your palm from the “A” bottle and, inadvertently, two pills from the “B” bottle. Unfortunately the “A” and “B” pills are indistinguishable, and taking more than one “B” pill per day is fatal. And the pills are very expensive, so you can’t afford to throw out the handful and start over. How can you arrange to take the correct dose without wasting any pills?

PUZZLES & HOROSCOPE
Answers: Sodoku, p.11, Crossword, p.11
HOROSCOPE • JULY 23 - JULY 29 ARIES (March 21-April 19). It hurts you that you do not possess the magic wand to make your wish happen today, but don’t worry. You will accomplish through perseverance what you couldn’t make happen through power.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). In your current state of ultra-efficiency, there are a few things that will bother you: people who amble, dawdle or have a generally cavalier attitude about time.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20). The spirit of play is awakening inside you. There are certain people who bring it out more than others. The right playmates help you keep your buoyant energy throughout the day.
SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). That you feel so deeply is an asset in many situations; however, today’s situation presents an exception. The more emotionally removed you are from a conflict the stronger your position will be.
GEMINI (May 21-June 21). You’re in the mood to rock the boat. This makes things more interesting. The question: How hard should you rock it? The answer: Hard enough to move it, but not so hard that people will tumble out. CANCER (June 22-July 22). As you lose yourself in the activity that draws up your passion, there will be no wondering about whether you’re doing it right or worrying about how you’ll be received when you’re done. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). Don’t let financial issues throw you off balance. Your current paycheck is merely an income channel, not the source of abundance, which is the universe itself. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). Usually love is a priority, but today isn’t the usual kind of day. Romance may seem an unwelcome distraction, even a hindrance to your quest to better yourself. Paradoxically, this makes you all the more attractive.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). You’ll be drawn to those who have a mind as flexible as yours. Bonus: You’re also open-minded enough to realize that close-minded people have something to teach you, too. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). You’re all on the same team, though it won’t appear that way at first. Let the others know that when you win, they win. Your sense of humor will help to resolve any issues. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). As a rule, you’d prefer that people not make a fuss over you. It’s embarrassing! If they have to do it (and today they probably do), grin, bear it and say thanks. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). Friends don’t see you as you see yourself. They may have a point. Even though you tend to think of yourself in a certain light, stay open to other lighting schemes, too.

BRAIN TEASER ANSWER Solution: Add a second “A” pill to the group and cut each pill in half: Now, regardless of their identities, if you take one half of each pill you’ll be taking the equivalent of one “A” pill and one “B” pill. Tomorrow you can take the remaining halves and then return to the normal regimen.
