Notes from the Editor I did it! In fact many of you have now done it, and that is to have turned off the air conditioner and fired up the heater. Our snowbird visitors are probably laughing at us desert locals at the mention of having the heater on. Little do they know (in good fun) that we are laughing at the snowbirds who wear shorts no matter how cold our desert winters get.

However, what I have found to be the most exciting for valley goers is all of the free events. Yes FREE. I have several posted in the paper, and you’ll always find a boat load in our sister publication the Desert Entertainer. So go out and have some fun, isn’t that what the resort lifestyle is all about! Cheers………Françoise

Be on the lookout for a variety of inaugural events this season. The barbecue festival on the cover is one of them, and the beer festival on page 11 is another. Both sound like a lot of fun. Remember to stop by your local library as many are expanding their seasonal events to include an assortment of lectures, concerts and family fun days.

Editor’s Inbox Francoise,

Dear Joan,

Thank you for running the memorial. It was judiciously edited. His friends here will be very pleased. This was the last piece of the puzzle for me, so now on to the rest of my life.

It was our honor to memorialize your late husband Ray Carroll. As you both have been, and you continue to be a huge supporter of the DMHN, I and the rest of the staff can’t thank you enough for all of your contributions and the great fun that you have with them.

Joan Carroll

Sincerely, Françoise

The first indigenous tribes Christopher Columbus encountered on the island he named Hispaniola had developed a unique method for cooking meat over an indirect flame, created using green wood to keep the food (and wood) from burning.

Reports indicate that the Spanish referred to this new style of cooking as barbacoa: the original barbecue. As the Spanish explorers who

www.desertmobilehomenews.com

followed Columbus turned their expeditions north, they brought the cooking technique with them. In 1540, close to present-day Tupelo, Mississippi, the Chicksaw tribe, in the presence of explorer Hernando de Soto, cooked a feast of pork over the barbacoa. Eventually, the technique made its way to the colonies, traveling as far north as Virginia.

It Works! Other ways to use Beer Stain removal: Instead of pulling out a chemical cleaner on clothing or rug, soak the stain in beer. Let the beer sit for a while then dab with a clean cloth. Wash well with soap and water once the spot has soaked. Always spot-test the fabric first. Spruce up wooden furniture: Rub flat beer gently onto furniture using a soft cloth. The beer will help restore some of the polish and color. Clean gold jewelry: Similar to how you would use commercial gold-cleaning chemicals, just place gold jewelry in a dish of beer. Let it soak, then remove, rinse, and gently polish with a dry cloth. Polishing brass pots: Using a soft cloth, gently rub beer onto the pot.

November 12, 2015

Let the pot sit for a while, rinse, and dry with another soft cloth. The acids in beer work wonders on most metals. Loosen rusty bolts: Using beer to loosen bolts is a bit “Macgiver-ish, but the acids in the beer may dissolve enough rust to allow you to get them loose.

Desert Bighorn Sheep Lecture

HOROSCOPE • NOVEMBER 12 - NOVEMBER 18 ARIES (March 21-April 19). You know better than to move just to look busy. Your activities have to mean something to you or you’re unlikely to carry them out. TAURUS (April 20-May 20). Your sense of justice is aligned with that of the great forces of the universe. It will all work out in a way that you think is fair. This is especially satisfying when it has to do with your love life. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). Happy things will happen. Upbeat people will assist you, friendly advice will prove sound, and, best of all, the one you are attracted to will give you evidence that the feeling is mutual.

The Desert Institute at Joshua Tree National Park in partnership with the Twentynine Palms Historical Society is presenting the Old Schoolhouse lecture series on Friday, November 13. Mark Jorgensen, retired park superintendent at Anza Borrego State Park will be discussing his new book, “Desert Bighorn Sheep: Wilderness Icon”.

November 12, 2015

This event takes place at 7 p.m., at the Twenty-nine Palms Old Schoolhouse Museum and the admission is $5.00. Seating is limited. A dinner with the speaker is at 5 p.m., at the 29 Palms Inn located at 73950 Inn Ave, Twentynine Palms, CA 92277. (760) 367-3505 for more info.

CANCER (June 22-July 22). There are those fascinating people you’d like to follow around, just to see how they do it. Actually, you might be surprised by how many people feel that way about you. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). It feels good to get positive feedback, but it’s not nearly as helpful as complaints are. When your ego is small, your ability to take negative criticism and transform it into a winning edge is huge. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). Your roles today will tend toward the extreme, such as the sweetest friend on earth, and the world’s greatest romantic. But beware: once you’re known in a certain way, you’ll be expected to keep it up.

www.desertmobilehomenews.com

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). Expect some inner turbulence, likely triggered by one who has no idea what your triggers are. Remind yourself with a loving action that you are an important and cherished member of the human race. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). Act on your sensational ideas and you’ll debunk the myth of the tortured artist. You live the life of a completely sane, happy and productive creative dynamo. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). As usual, Lady Luck plays a key role in the good fortune that befalls you over the weekend. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). As you continue along this path, certain landmarks will look suspiciously familiar to you. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). You treat them like royalty and they adore you right back. That’s what makes the next 24 hours lovely, though it’s possible you won’t totally appreciate this until you look back on it several months from now. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). Unlike some people, you don’t need an hour’s notice to leave the house. Hear a good idea? You’ll be ready in a flash! Your organized and methodical nature makes it possible for you to be spontaneous.

Caring for Fall Grass in the Desert The drought in the West has taken a serious toll on lawns throughout the region; here are a few tips to help you keep your yard in top form. Tip #1: Let your grass go brown. Grass grows in cycles, “turning on and off,” based on the resources it gets. As water becomes less available, grass will slow down, go dormant and turn brown. Tip #2: Don’t Over Water. It may be tempting to give your thirsty

lawn a heavy duty drink, but stick with what the experts recommend. Grass gets lazy if you water it too much and sends its roots horizontally. With little water, grass will send its roots deeper, vertically, seeking water. Tip #3: Plant the Right Grass. Fall can be a good time of year to transition to a more drought-friendly grass variety; hundreds of varieties of turfgrass exist. Tip #4: Add Pollinators. Your lawn

is an ecosystem, and pollinators are a key part of its life cycle. Even in the desert, a host of plants flower. Add pollinator plants for bees, butterflies, and humming birds. Tip #5: Mix Native Plants and Drought-Resistant Adaptive Species in Your Lawn. Tip #6: Educate yourself on the benefits of your landscape. Living landscapes provide you and your community with a host of benefits. Turfgrasses, like those found

in your lawn, dissipate radiant heat through a process called evapotranspiration, helping to cool urban “heat islands.” A turf area 50’ x 50’ will produce enough oxygen to meet the daily needs of a family of four. Grass also captures and filters water run-off and rainfall too, removing harmful pollutants.
