Notes from the Editor Are you still full from Thanksgiving? I certainly am, but that’s not stopping me from trying the Leftover Stuffing Pie recipe in the previous paper…yummy! Within one week the CV has immersed itself in holiday spirit. From tree lighting’s to this weekend’s annual Festival of Lights Parade in Palm Springs, it’s going to be a busy holiday season. Decorations are everywhere and each year store fronts get more and more creative, drive down El Paseo and enjoy the window displays, lovely.

Hi Cherryl,

My neighbor Carolyn just gave us a piece of the best Pecan Pie Bar I’ve ever had, they even have a version of the recipe for sugar-challenged people. I’ve convinced her to send it to you so I can get the recipe. You’ll love it, wait for it!

We are all still delighting in your Fudge Krinkle Cookies and can’t imagine it getting much better than that! However, Carolyn did send in the recipe and I’ll feature it in the next issue. I can’t wait, nor can our readers, to be tantalized by another delicious treat!

Thanks so much, Françoise

The Magic of Mistletoe protection against poison; and an aphrodisiac. The mistletoe of the sacred oak was especially sacred to the ancient Celtic Druids. It was gathered at both mid-summer and winter solstices, and the custom of using mistletoe to decorate houses at Christmas is a survival of the Druid and other pre-Christian traditions.

From the earliest times mistletoe has been one of the most magical, mysterious, and sacred plants of European folklore. It was considered to bestow life and fertility; a

BRAIN TEASER A person can carry sufficient food and water to travel four days in the desert. The planned trip will last six days, alone, no one can succeed. Question : How many people will it take to lead the first person to their destination and to allow the others to return to the starting point? ANSWER ON PAGE 13

In the Middle Ages and later, branches of mistletoe were hung from ceilings to ward off evil spirits. In Europe they were placed over house and stable doors to prevent the entrance of witches. It was also believed that the oak mistletoe could extinguish fire. The traditions which began with the European mistletoe were transferred to the similar American plant with the process of immigration and settlement.

Community Garden Reopens in Palm Desert Following an extensive fourmonth renovation project, Palm Desert celebrated the reopening of the City’s first community garden on November 30. Located on the southwest corner of Guadalupe and San Pablo avenues, the City’s Guadalupe Community Garden was the only such garden in the region when it opened in 1999. On August 1, the facility was closed for a much needed makeover that included removal of the existing garden boxes and installation of a brand new irrigation system. The redesigned layout has created space for three additional garden boxes, which translates into spots for three more community gar-

4

deners. The new 4-foot by 10-foot boxes are made from concrete and recycled glass, the same material found in the new benches and trash cans on El Paseo. A new irrigation main line has been installed as well as a drip system in each box, eliminating the need for soaker hoses and making the garden more water efficient. Wood chips have been spread over the bare area around the boxes to minimize dust. Palm Desert residents who would like more information about Palm Desert’s Community Gardens or to add their name to the waiting list are encouraged to call (760) 346-0611, ext. 468. Curb Appetites in Style with an Edible Centerpiece Create a palatable centerpiece as a practical, yet pretty addition to the table with these steps: • Wrap the base of a candle with plastic wrap to prevent direct contact with your filler material. • Nestle the candle into a bowl and surround it with small apples, cranberries or coffee beans. • Take your centerpiece to new heights by painting a decorative stripe or pattern around the bowl.

Keep Cocoa Warm with DIY Chalkboard Mugs Serve guests in style with customizable chalkboard mugs -- here’s how: • Tape around the top of a porcelain mug and handle, creating a straight line to paint beneath, using painter’s tape, such as FrogTape. Paint the taped-off area with porcelain chalkboard paint. Remove the tape when you finish painting and allow the mug to dry for 24 hours. • Bake your mug according to your paint’s directions. Allow it to cool. The paint will be as permanent as baked enamel -- and dishwasher and microwave safe. • Personalize the mug with festive phrases for visitors.

It Works!

Keeping Veggies and Fruit Fresh Keep potatoes, onions, and tomatoes in a cool, dry place, but not in the fridge. The cold will ruin their flavor. Store unripe fruits and veggies like pears, peaches, plums, kiwis, mangoes, apricots, avocados, melons, and bananas on the counter. Once they’re ripe, move them to the fridge. Banana peels will turn dark brown, but it won’t affect the flesh.

Store salad greens and fresh herbs in bags filled with a little air and sealed tightly. Citrus fruits such as oranges, tangerines, lemons, and limes, will do fine for up to a week in a cool, dark place, away from direct sunlight, but you can lengthen their lives by storing them in the fridge in a mesh or perforated plastic bag.
