Notes from the Editor As I’m enjoying all of the holiday cheer, I am also saddened by the recent tragedies so close to home. Events such as in Paris and San Bernardino should be a constant reminder that life can change in a minute. With that in mind, many of our local charities are in dire need of items for the less fortunate. Often we put so much pressure on ourselves to give money, when even more important might be food, clothing or personal hygiene items that we can donate instead. Contact your local City Hall and find out who is collecting what in your area and please try and help, and don’t forget the children.

Finally cover up your Poinsettia’s at night, why we associate them with Christmas I have no idea considering the fact they are warm weather plants. I learned this the hard way after the first freeze we recently had. Thanks Home Depot for replacing the nine plants I lost the very first night! Imagine if every house in your area put up one string of lights………Françoise

Editor’s Inbox Dear Editor,

Hi Robert,

I read the article about getting ready for El Nino, and at first thought all was fine at my home. But I kept thinking about the rain gutters and decided to get a ladder and check. My rain gutters were full of all sorts of stuff and I don’t even know from where.

Between us, and all of our readers, that is what happened to me. I was reading bits and pieces, here and there about El Nino and started looking around my home. I had major flooding once from rain gutters that were stopped up and couldn’t drain, you can bet mine are clear now.

Thanks for the warning, I hope a lot of people take heed and do some of the simple things you suggested. Sincerely, Robert C., Cathedral City

Thanks for the note and don’t forget the extra hot chocolate for those rainy days! Françoise

HOROSCOPE • DECEMBER 10 - DECEMBER 16 ARIES (March 21-April 19). The unknowable will remain such, but that shouldn’t stop you from reaching out to touch it with your imagination. It’s part of the kind of growing up that can happen at any age. TAURUS (April 20-May 20). Name your limits. Face them and focus on them. This isn’t negative; rather, it’s a realistic way of finding your unique advantage. These days, limits are opportunities. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). To write a letter is to practice a healing art. To send a letter is to flirt with regret or perhaps even marry it. Don’t send. Hold on to it. Think about it for at least a few months. It bears repeating: Don’t send.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). Don’t doubt the power of small things. One small instance of compassion, kindness, creative problem solving, bright thinking or good manners will start a ripple that will touch lives in ways you’ll never know. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). Relationships hit natural highs, lows, hellos and goodbyes. It takes maturity to get comfortable with the cycle of things. You love more freely when you’re not afraid of closing statements. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). Defining your experience will be tricky. Ultimately your happiness depends on the way you frame the picture.

CANCER (June 22-July 22). What is the point in being who they want you to be? You could do it, no problem. But success in fleshing out the role would only bring a victory belonging to the character you created — not to the real you.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). You don’t get a lot of free time these days, and you have many choices about where to invest it. Therefore, the people you pay attention to are very lucky indeed. Do they know that?

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). Get ready. Opportunity is circling like luggage at the baggage claim conveyor belt. The key is in remembering to let go of the moment that’s already passed so your hands are free to grab this new one as it goes by.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). Your best opportunities spring from a chilled-out mood. So close your eyes and conjure up a lazy scene. Your powers of imagination are all you need to relax and enjoy life.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). You might want to get prepared to run into exactly the person, problem or entity you want nothing to do with. This isn’t a curse; it’s a blessing. You’ll be better for having undergone these preparations.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). When you ask for and receive help, what does the other person want in return? If you don’t know, find out. Everything has a cost. Today, the currency is not money.
