Palm Springs International Film Festival announces opening, closing films and more

T

he 27th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival (PSIFF) will launch on Friday, January 1 with Klaus Härö’s “The Fencer.” The Festival’s closing night film will then screen on Sunday, January 10 with the U.S. premiere of “Last Cab to Darwin,” directed by Jeremy Sims. The Festival announced its complete lineup of films including Talking Pictures, Special Presentations and additional programming. A total of 176 films will screen in this year’s festival from January 1-11. To view the entire list of films visit www.psfilmfest.org.

“Bookending the festival are two films from opposite sides of the globe, both of which promise an emotionally stirring film-going experience,” said Artistic Director Helen du Toit. “The Fencer is the ideal opener for Palm Springs – not just because it is a beautifully made film, and a crowd-pleaser, but also because Finnish director Klaus Härö has become a festival favorite over the years. We are equally excited to be wrapping the festival with the US premiere of Jeremy Sims’ Last Cab to Darwin, a road movie/comedy set in the Australian outback and featuring the irresistible Michael Caton as a man who, while trying to expedite his own demise, finally learns how to live.”

Talking Pictures Every year, the Festival presents a series of special programs devoted to exploring the careers and creative choices of the top talents in the world of cinema, including Oscar-caliber actors and directors in conversation with leading entertainment journalists. Each program includes a film screening and an on-stage conversation. Golden Globe nominee Lily Tomlin will attend the screening of Sony Pictures Classics’ “Grandma” and participate in an on-stage interview immediately following, presented by Tribeca Short List. Elle Reid has just gotten through breaking up with her girlfriend when her granddaughter Sage unexpectedly shows up needing 600 dollars before sundown. Temporarily broke, Grandma Elle and Sage spend the day trying to get their hands on the cash and their unannounced visits to old friends and flames end up rattling skeletons and digging up secrets. Director Asif Kapadia will attend the screening of his documentary “Amy,” a sympathetic and revealing portrait of Amy Winehouse which employs the singer’s own candid footage and creative visu-

Special Presentation The Festival will hold three special presentations. The “Brand New Testament” is the Best Foreign Language Oscar submission from Belgium, directed by Jaco Van Dormael and starring Pili Groyne, Benoit Poelvoorde and Catherine Deneuve. The film is a high-concept satire in which God accidentally sets off a panic after his disgruntled daughter leaks the apocalyptic plans stored on his computer. The U.S. premiere of “Eye in the Sky,” directed by Gavin Hood and starring Hel-

Dinner and a Movie The festival will screen the documentary “Cooking Up a Tribute,” directed by Luis González and Andrea Gómez, as part of its Dinner and a Movie program. The film follows famed restaurateurs Josep, Jordi and Joan Roca as they take their renowned El Celler de Can Roca on the road, exploring and incorporating the native cuisines of Mexico, Colombia and Peru in their cooking. And the screening will be followed by a dinner at Mr. Lyons restaurant with a menu by chef Tara Lazar and Masterchef finalist Stephen Lee. “Suicide Dogs” More than 100 original new works were submitted to Dezart Perform’s 2015 Play Reading Festival, and, to her surprise, 22-year-old Jess Honovich had her dramedy “Suicide Dogs” accepted for a staged reading. Not only was it chosen as one of the five finalists, it won the festival’s top honor. As Audience Favorite, she learned it would be fully produced during the 2015/2016 season. And that time has come. The World Premiere of “Suicide Dogs” will be performed Friday evening, January 22, at the Pearl McManus Theater in the Palm Springs Woman’s Club, followed by weekend runs through Sunday, January 31.

The story revolves around what happens after the death of a well-known golf professional in Florida. When the golf pro’s sister Amelia and her family arrive in Miami to prepare for her brother’s funeral, she struggles with the intentions of a prying neighbor, a daughter who’s increasingly out of control and an inflexible sister whom she doesn’t know very well. Adding to the chaos is the discovery that she must now take care of her brother’s very famous and very sick dog Driver. Co-starring are Rob Hubler, Stan Jenson, Rachel Silverman, Denise Strand and Yo Younger. The production is directed by Dezart Perform’s Artistic Director Michael Shaw and co-produced by Clark Dugger,

‘Sisters’

Fey and Poehler launch into comedic orbit By Neil Pond

I

f you’re looking for a popcorn alternative to Star Wars, here’s something that will send you sailing into a different kind of movie orbit. In Sisters, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler play a pair of grown-up siblings who try to recapture their younger days by staging one final raucous, riotous house party. Poehler is Maura, the helpful, respectable, responsible younger-sis do-gooder nurse. Fey is Kate, a little older, a good deal wilder and much brassier—but “not a hothead!” as she continually reminds folks. When they find out their mom and dad (James Brolin and Dianne Wiest) have decided to downsize, they return to their childhood home to do everything they can to ward off the potential buyers.

“Sisters” Tina Fey and Amy Poehler Directed by Jason Moore Rated: R Theaters: UltraStar Mary Pickford, Regal Cinemas Rancho Mirage Stadium 16, Cinémas Palm D’Or, Regal Cinemas Indio Metro 8 & Regal Palm Springs Stadium 9, Century Theatres La Quinta.

Kate’s teenage daughter (Madison Davenport) thinks her jobless-cosmetologist mom is an embarrassment, and she doesn’t want to live with her anymore. Can one night of abandon help Maura break free of her dull, nice-girl past—and a lifetime lived in the shadow of the more adventurous, more daring Kate? And will stopping the sale of their home solve their problems—or create bigger ones? Fey and Poehler, of course, worked together on TV’s Saturday Night Live before going on to even greater heights in various other projects, including solo stardom in Parks and Recreation and 30 Rock. Sisters is their first full movie collaboration in seven years, since Baby Mama (2008), and once again they strike comedy gold. Not only are they funny, they know that things get even funnier by surrounding themselves with funny people and letting them do their stuff. Working from a script by former SNL writer Paula Pell, and under the direction of Jason Moore (Pitch Perfect), they generously fill the talent pool with current SNL players (Kate McKinnon, Bobby Monynihan), fellow alums (Maya Rudolph, Rachel Dratch), rising stars (Samantha Bee, whose new TBS show, Full Frontal, premieres in January) and a cavalcade of supporting players (John Leguizamo, WWE superstar John Cena, Matt Oberg).

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler Even Brolin and Wiest, the two veterans of the cast, get plenty of opportunities to joist and jab with their funny bones. But the movie belongs to its two costars, who rock, roll and rule with a crackerjack chemistry that fuels everything, firing on all cylinders from start to finish. Some of it is raunchy, although well within bounds of today’s R-rated comedy sandbox. And it’s all brisk, bright, some of it even quite sweet, and very, very funny. Somehow grownup jokes Christmasgift-wrapped by these two smart, classy leading ladies makes the dirty seem merely naughty. There’s a giant phallus painted on the wall—and Tina Fey’s taking suggestive selfies with it! Haha! What are they pre-

tending to do with those majorette batons? Teehee! Are they really talking so much about sex, drugs and private parts? Hardy-har-har! The humor is rapid-fire, especially when the banter is zipping, zapping and zinging between Fey and Poehler, whose timing, sense of teamwork and ease around each other suggests that they really might be Sisters, after all. And they’re great dance partners, too—they bust a righteous move at their party to the 1993 rap-dance song “Informer” (“a licky boom-boom down”) and end the movie with a sweet slow-dance groove that becomes a joyously goofy send-off. The (comedy) Force is definitely with them.

nyone can become a person of extraordinary character. It doesn’t require good looks or remarkable talent. In the end, extraordinary character is what earns lasting respect from others and ourselves. Mercury square Mars urges us to stop focusing on what makes us special and unique and start focusing on doing the right thing.

brief and possibly indirect. A pointed implication may get the message across.

ARIES (March 21-April 19). Having trouble letting go of old baggage? Don’t force it. One of the best ways to rid yourself of the heaviness is to seek new, lighter luggage. Get out there and make a replacement memory for the one you’d rather forget.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). Avoid making sweeping generalizations about yourself. You’re made up of many parts. Focus on one aspect at a time. Highlight the thing you like, and work on the thing you don’t.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20). Tired people and hungry people are often grumpy people. Whatever you can do to make sure the basics are covered for you and yours will go a long way toward keeping the vibes positive at home.
