The Motorhome Rally Promises a Roaring Good Time attendees can browse through motorhome components, accessories, home products, clothing, and more within approximately 150 vendor spaces. Daily admission to the motorhome show is $10 per person; children admitted free. This fee is good for admission to the exhibits and seminars only; other activities are reserved for rally attendees. Free parking for those purchasing a daily admission pass is available at the Arrival Area on Arabia Street.

To kick off the year 2016, more than 1,200 families in motorhomes will travel to the Riverside County Fair & National Date Festival grounds in Indio for the 28th Annual Western Area Rally. The theme for this year’s rally is “Call of the Wild.” Rest assured that the only wild animals to be found during the event will be decorative, in keeping with the whimsical jungle theme. But it will be readily apparent that attendees are wild

about motorhomes and all things related. A small city within a city will form as the anticipated 3,000 people gather in their homes on wheels for this rally, which is expected to have an estimated economic impact of $3 million to $5 million in the local area. Members of the public are invited to take part in the motorhome show portion of the rally at the Riverside County Fair & National

Date Festival grounds. Display hours for motorhomes are from 1:30 p.m., until 4:30 p.m., on Wednesday, January 6. Hours for motorhome and other exhibits are 9 a.m., until 4 p.m., on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, January 7, 8, and 9. Motorhome dealers from throughout California will participate in the show. In addition to the more than 100 motorhomes that will be open for display (in various types and sizes), show

FMCA members may also purchase a one-day admission that includes exhibits and entertainment (no overnight parking) for an additional $25.

All motorhome owners are invited to join the Family Motor Coach Association, and those who have not yet done so will have an opportunity to enroll during the event in Indio at the FMCA membership booth. For more information visit www.fmca.com or call (513) 474-3622

Happy New Year from the staff of the Desert Mobile Home News

Notes from the Editor It’s here, it’s gone, and I’m exhausted. I’m talking about Christmas. I thought I had the perfect plan in place when it came to gifts. Lists in place – check! Gift bags purchased – check! Gifts purchased – check! What I didn’t realize is that once I started buying gifts, I had forgotten several of the circles of people I work with. This is a sample of the circles in my life, radio staff, television staff, radio show sponsors, newspaper team, magazine team, media colleagues, mailman,

manicurist, hair stylist, favorite waiters, friends, family, and so on. No I didn’t forget my friends and family, just some of the others. However, I caught it in time and all is well. As the New Year approaches I’m filled with excitement, and am certain this year will be the best year ever. With that said, I’m wishing everyone all the best in 2016. Time to open the bubbly! ..........Françoise

Editor’s Inbox Dear Editor,

Hi Annie,

I’m really enjoying the Did you know? column. I’m not sure where you find out all of this information, but I cut them out and then type them in my emails to friends. They think I’m an encyclopedia of knowledge. I’m having fun with this. Thank you.

And I thought I was impressing you with my knowledge, seems like you are beating me at my own game;-) Here is how I really find the Did you know? information. I’m sitting at my desk and all of a sudden a thought about something I didn’t know pops into my head, then I Google it! It’s that simple.

Sincerely, Annie H., Palm Springs CA

I’ll try to keep the topics creative. As for this issue, there is more to champagne than we know, especially when it comes to opening the bottle….whisper! POP!........Françoise

Did you know? Celebrate with Champagne The tradition of drinking champagne to mark celebrations originated in the royal courts of Europe prior to 1789, where the expensive drink was viewed as a status symbol. Royalty loved the novelty of sparkling line. It was said to have positive effects on women’s beauty and man’s wit. However, the bubbly-spraying throw downs that now accompany athletic victories are a much more

recent development. When Dan Gurney and A.J. Foyt won the grueling 24 Hours of Le Mans race in 1967, they ascended the winner’s podium with a bottle of champagne in hand. Gurney looked down and saw team owner Carroll Shelby and Ford Motors CEO Henry Ford II standing with some journalists and decided to have a bit of fun. Gurney gave the bottle a shake and sprayed the crowd, and a new tradition was born.

RV must haves in 2016 Mini Solar Device Charger Keeping our gadgets charged has become an important part of our lives. Products like the Solio Bolt Battery Pack + Solar Charger serve as an inexpensive way to keep devices charged with sunshine. Portable Meat Smoker RV grill chefs without lots of storage space might consider the Cobb Portable BBQ Grill and Smoker. This device grills, smokes, bakes, roasts, fries and boils. The unit measures 14 x 14 x 14 inches, weighs 10 pounds and requires only seven or eight briquettes to get up to temperature. Walkie Talkies (Two-Way Radios) Two-way radios make for a handy RV tool. They can help with parking, keeping in touch at large ven-

ues, (especially if there is no cell service) and they’re fun to use. Micro Blender For RVers short on storage space, a single-serve micro blender is a great addition to even the smallest RV galley. These powerful blenders perform a variety of kitchen tasks ranging from making breakfast smoothies to blending sauces. Some of the best-sellers include Hamilton Beach and Oster. Tankless Air Compressor A portable tankless air compressor is handy for small jobs from filling bicycle tires to topping off a spare tire during a roadside emergency. Look for units that can pump to 150 psi and run on 12 volt and/or 120 volt. Tankless compressors can also be used to winterize your RV.

It Works! it out. Drape the towel over the bottle and hold it securely against the neck, but leave a bit of an air pocket so the cork has room to move. The towel helps you keep a firm grip on the cork and also catches it once it’s released from the bottle. Slowly twist the cork out of the bottle, the moment will come when the internal pressure in the bottle takes over and starts to push the cork out on its own. Let this happen, keeping a grip on the towel, the cork will pop out into the towel. Yes, there is a correct way to open champagne. The only tools you need for this are two thumbs and a kitchen towel. The problem isn’t really getting the cork out, it’s keeping control of the cork so it doesn’t go flying! The towel is not for wiping up the spills, but rather for controlling and containing the cork as you ease

In culinary school, whenever a bottle of Champagne needs to be opened instructors always admonish, “A whisper! The Champagne should whisper when it opens!” Meaning you should just hear the barest puff of effervescence, a mere whisper, when the cork is pulled. Loud pops are met with a grimace and a shake of the head. Apparently, the loud pop is fun, but classy people whisper.
