1921 Coachella Valley Water Tower Restoration Project

The Coachella Valley History Museum opened in 1984 with a dual mission of educating the public and preserving the region’s history. Recently the museum launched a fundraising campaign to restore its historic M.H. Whittier Company water tower and the museum’s collection of antique farm implements.

“The water tower is an iconic piece of local history,” said Coachella Valley History Museum Board Member Gloria Franz. “It’s a monument to the ingenuity and determination of our desert pioneers, and a reminder of what life was like here in those early days. This project will ensure that we’re able to share that heritage with generations for years to come.”

The water tower was erected in 1921 on the M.H. Whittier Ranch, located at the southeast corner of Avenue 48 and Jackson Street in modern day Coachella. In 1993, the family of local date grower Hurbert Richert moved the tank to the Coachella Valley History Museum. The restoration project began in November 2015 and is expected to be completed by January 2017.

Tax-deductible contributions can be made via the online payment system, PayPal. The museum’s goal is to raise $50,000.

For more information about the water tower project, visit http:// www.cvhm.org/water-tower. html or call (760) 342-6651.

Notes from the Editor 2016 is here; notice I didn’t say finally because for me 2015 flew by. What does this new year have in store for us, I’m excited to find out. One new thing I do know for the paper is more articles about pet events (read the Editor’s Inbox), and helpful tips. Ask and I shall try to make it happen! Champagne and strawberries anyone! If you have leftovers there is a fun jello recipe on page 9.

I was surprised to find so many recipes for leftover champagne, frankly who has any left over? Brrrrrr….I’m having a hard time equating the desert and freezing cold weather. One morning it was so cold a picture of a snowflake popped up on my dashboard of my car warning me that it was below freezing……I never knew how much I loved my seat heater until this last month! Champagne anyone……….Françoise

Editor’s Inbox Dear Editor,

Hi Roland,

My pets are my children. I read the paper weekly and am suggesting you offer us some helpful hints about pet care, pet training, or anything related to pets. I’m always interested in the It Works column, maybe in there?

I’ll admit that you caught me off guard with your suggestion, but you’re right. I will work diligently to find more events or stories in the valley related to pets, and I’ll see what type of helpful hints I can discover.

Much appreciated, Roland B., Desert Edge

***Pet lovers, send me a photo of your pet/pets (with a caption) and I’ll post it in the paper. Regards, Françoise

The Forgotten Gold Rush Old Schoolhouse Lecture Series Join author and historian, Paul Smith, as he recounts “the Forgotten Gold Rush”. While the California Gold Rush of 1849 was well known throughout the world, little was written about the “forgot-

ten gold rush” of the desert areas of Southern California. Colorful characters left the “easy pickings” up north and filed mining claims in what is now

the Joshua Tree National Park. Come learn about the Old Dale mining district and mines within the park.

The lecture is held at the Old Schoolhouse Museum, 6760 National Park Drive, Twentynine Palms, January 8, 7 p.m. This lecture is open to the public and costs $5 per person at the door. For more information call (760) 367-5535.

HOROSCOPE JANUARY 7 - 13 ARIES (March 21-April 19). Usually, whether or not you get what you want you take it in stride. Today you’re more invested in seeing things go your way, as you should be. This one is important and worth fighting for.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). You’ll be there to catch the soul who is floundering to catch balance. Your discreet assistance will be much appreciated, though perhaps privately, so as not to draw attention to the fall.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20). You want to improve the world; we all do. Maybe that’s why you’re turned off by political rants that either preach to the choir or alienate the opposition. A break from intense sharing is what’s needed.

SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). You’re not exactly in uncharted territory, but, without guides around, you might as well be. Call out to tell people where you want to go. Trying to get there without a map will be a waste of time.

GEMINI (May 21-June 21). It’s nice to feel self-contained, and you very well may be able to fulfill any need that comes up today all on your own. However, accepting a bit of help may also be the most gracious thing to do. CANCER (June 22-July 22). Relationships will thrive as you give enough to let others know you’re interested and admiring and then pull back enough to allow them to reach for you. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). You care. You give. You get. You care even more. This is the cycle that sums up the day. Tonight will bring an important meeting of the minds. Capricorn and Aquarius are two minds that should be included. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). Your current vision is enough to drive you to the next waypoint, but a broader vision is probably needed to sustain your motivation through the miles and miles that follow. Brainstorm, discuss and research.

January 7, 2015

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). You will accomplish your top priority as long as you state what it is and keep paying attention to it throughout the day. Loved ones seem to need you, but if you’re busy they’ll do brilliantly on their own. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). Go ahead and step into that fresh scene. You’ll get attention because you’re the new person, and you’ll become fast friends with someone who can show you around. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). Your help is so subtle that some don’t even realize they are being assisted. You’ll gently nudge people into the right groove and all goes smoothly from there. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). Preferring to keep things light, you may not set out to tell your friend what’s really going on with you, but you’re likely to reveal it, anyway, because the time you spend together has a way of opening your heart.

Did you know? Fireworks – in the beginning Many historians believe the explosive form of entertainment originated in China, which continues to produce and export more fireworks than any other country in the world. It is thought that, as early as 200 B.C., the Chinese had already stumbled upon a sort of natural firecracker: They would roast bamboo, which explodes with a bang when heated due to its hollow air pockets, in order to ward off evil spirits. At some point between 600 and 900 A.D., Chinese alchemists— perhaps hoping to discover an elixir for immortality—mixed together saltpeter (potassium nitrate, then a common kitchen

seasoning), charcoal, sulfur and other ingredients, unwittingly yielding an early form of gunpowder. The Chinese began stuffing the volatile substance into bamboo shoots that were then thrown into the fire to produce a loud blast. The first fireworks were born.

ANSWER ON PAGE 13

Soon, paper tubes came to replace the bamboo stalks, and the Chinese discovered that their fiery sticks could be used for more than just scaring away ghosts and celebrating special events. By the 10th century, they had developed crude bombs and begun attaching firecrackers to arrows that rained down on their adversaries during military engagements.

How to make fresh flowers last longer Don’t throw away those last drops of soda! Pour about 1/4 cup into the water in a vase full of cut flowers. The sugar in the soda will make the blossoms last longer. Note: If you have a clear vase and want the water to remain

clear, use a clear soda, like Sprite or 7-Up. A penny for your flowers: The copper can act as a natural antibacterial agent, so drop a penny in the water on the first day.
