The Peking Acrobats

at McCallum Theatre The Peking Acrobats’ ability to perform the astounding is rooted in centuries of Chinese history and folk art. Records of acrobatic acts at court can be found as early as the Ch’in Dynasty (221 B.C. to 207 B.C.). According to Fu Qifeng, author of Chinese Acrobatics Through the Ages, acrobatics originated from daily lives, drawing experiences in work, war and sacrificial rites. Acrobatics became widespread during the Warring States Period in China (475 B.C. to 221 B.C.). During the Han Dynasty (207 B.C. to 220 A.D.), acrobatics flourished and were incorporated into court entertainments The Peking Acrobats have played to sold-out houses around the world and earned rave reviews during their previous twenty-eight theatre tours. Their engagement on Broadway in New York City made headlines with three sold-out weeks.

As an added treat, the Acrobats are joined by drum and percussion virtuosos, Jigu! Thunder Drums of China. The Palm House

a great match of music and menu By Lucinda Sue Crosby For Desert Entertainer

O

n December 4, long-time (and colorful) Coachella Valley restaurateur Wayne “Woody” Woodliff softopened what promises to be a hot new eatery – the Palm House. Besides a total renovation of the building formerly occupied by Tony Roma’s, Woody also expanded and refit the kitchen and spruced up the décor, doing much of the physical labor on his own. “Who better to realize my vision than me?” He asked with a laugh. “Especially since I’ve had a lot of reno experience and feel capable of building things exactly as I see them in my head.” The style is rustic contemporary with interesting touches like lamps and sconces created by local artist Susan Dorazo, expansive booths, recycled brick and tables dressed to please in white cloths and black napkins. A spacious patio near the entrance propels you through French doors into a large dining room anchored

Grilled Rack of Lamb served with cremini mushrooms, onions, spinach and garlic drizzled with Cabernet sauce by a stage and then on into a separate bar area. The effect suggests casual fine dining in a relaxed atmosphere – a perfect setting for a night out in our gorgeous desert … all pulled together by an obviously savvy owner/designer/manager. Indeed, Woody comes by his handson mojo honestly as he is also the successful proprietor of Woody’s Burgers, which was borne of an object lesson he sketched out to educate his sons. “They had an easier road growing up than I did and I thought laying out a detailed business plan for a restaurant was an impactful way to share some practical knowledge.” Weeks later, when an interesting space just happened to come available in downtown Palm Springs, Woody’s background in property flipping combined

with his training at the American Institute of Baking ensured he was prepared to take advantage of a unique opportunity. He pulled the trigger on Woody’s Burgers and has never looked back. It’s not surprising then that, several years down the road, when an additional space with a great location and history presented itself, Woody recognized the potential and dove in. “I loved the Palm House space the minute I saw it,” Woody said. As you know, restaurants face fierce competition here. When it comes to enticing and keeping customers, Woody’s long-haul philosophy has been proved true: quality ingredients that are supplied by local vendors whenever possible coupled with an upscale All American

menu and a welcoming and friendly staff – that’s the secret of creating repeat business. “I believe in serving great food at an affordable price,” Woody said. “I want to demonstrate to my guests how much I appreciate their patronage.” Which is why, for the price of an entrée, you will enjoy a complete meal. The Palm House specializes in steaks, seafood, chops and pasta – a simple yet satisfying menu I characterize as elegant yet familiar. Standout entrees would include the meaty Rib-Eye steak (a value at $22) and the Grilled Salmon and Asparagus (flaky, delicate and moist salmon and al dente spears finished with citrus butter and lemon sauce). If you’re a fish lover, I recommend this dish.

Wayne “Woody” Woodliff Tasty appetizers abound, with the Spinach Artichoke Dip (a creamy classic accompanied by crusty, warm French bread – easily enough for four as a starter) and Pan Roasted Shrimp (with coconut rum and pineapple flourish) both particularly flavorful. The late night Bar Menu best-sellers include the Pan Roasted Blue Mussels (ocean fresh, served with a sun-dried tomato/basil/garlic/lemon sauce) and the New York Steak Sandwich (succulent beef, thinly sliced, smothered in sweet onions and drizzled with melted cheese). And we haven’t even discussed the coolest thing about the Palm House – the live music seven evenings a week! Woody, who LOVES music and has dabbled in bass guitar for decades alongside luminaries like high school friend Brad Gillis of Ozzy Osbourne fame, invites you to grab a table and dine while listening to the smooth sounds of supper club jazz from 5:30 to 9 p.m., when the tunes are often provided by David Ring’s quartet. oody Woodliff is vigorously entrepreneurial. His other desert eatery, the 1950s retro-themed Woody’s Burgers, is located at 317 N. Indian Canyon, Palm Springs. A great place to dig some classic tunes and bring to mind mid-century memories, the food also happens to be great – his burgers have won a slew of awards to prove it. And the onion rings! How fragrant and crisp! As the sun sets, more delights are in store. Even without knowing the password, you are guaranteed entry into an intimate speakeasy-type back room known as Woody’s After Dark where top jazz and blues artists make their musical magic. Film Review

Daddy’s Home high-spirited co-parenting comedy By Neil Pond

W

hat do families need more — fathers or a dad?”

That’s the question posed at the beginning of Daddy’s Home by Brad (Will Ferrell), who wants more than anything else to be a dad — because he can’t become a father, at least biologically. Since an unfortunate snafu in a dental office years ago rendered him sterile, stepdad Brad is working hard to become part of the household — and the world — of Sarah (Linda Cardellini) and her two young children. It’s not easy. And it certainly gets harder when the kids’ real father, Dusty (Mark Wahlberg), shows up — and sets up the “good, old-fashioned dad-off” hijinks of this high-spirited holiday comedy. Motorcycle-riding Dusty is scuffed boots, big belt buckles and bulging biceps. Minivan-driving Brad is button-down blue Oxfords, neckties and the smooth jazz of the middle-of-the-road radio station at which he’s a mild-mannered middle exec. Her ex is “crazy and wild: like Jesse James and Mick Jagger had a baby,” offers Sarah. Ever-optimistic Brad is unfazed — at first. “He sounds like a rascal,” he says. “But I don’t think he’s anything I can’t handle.” That’s before Dusty takes over Brad’s home-improvement projects, his home and even his job, triggering all sorts of comedic shenanigans — dueling bedtime stories, a gonzo backyard tree house, a visit from “Santa” in April, a fertility-clin-

Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell ic fiasco and a wild motorcycle ride that turns Brad into a wall-piercing projectile. Ferrell and Wahlberg, who worked together previously in the shoot-’em-up cop comedy “The Other Guys,” are two very funny guys. It’s nice to see them both back in a PG-13 setting, especially after Wahlberg’s raunchy excursions with his furry, foul-mouthed teddy-bear friend Ted 2, and Ferrell’s crude 2015 prison-comedy with Kevin Hart, “Get Hard.” And it’s good to see them in something this funny. Much credit goes to director Sean Anders and his tight, bright screenplay collaboration with Brian Burns and John Morris, which keeps the laughs coming and works many gags for “overtime” payoff later. Keep your eyes peeled as well for L.A. Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant, actor-comedian Paul Scheer, and a cameo at the very end that puts the ideal capper on all that’s come before. But there’s a soft, sweet spot in “Daddy’s Home,” too, about parents and kids and the realities of divorce — about how it takes teamwork to make a family, how parenting is hard work and no two dads are the same. Brad tries to see beneath Dusty’s tough exterior. “I think, in here,” he says, pointing to his heart, “there’s a creamy center.” Daddy’s Home has one, as well, and it gives this rollicking co-parenting comedy a burst of sweet, flavorful feel-good that could make it a new seasonal repeat long after its theatrical run is done.
