P

ink Martini, an audience favorite, returns for five performances, January 29 through February 2.

Drawing inspiration from music from around the world, crossing genres of classical, jazz and old-fashioned pop, Pink Martini’s diverse repertoire is a blend influenced by Cole Porter, Duke Ellington, Tito Puente, Xavier Cugat, Argentine tango, Brazilian samba, Italian folk, Asian, and romantic Hollywood musicals of the 1940s and 50s. As band leader/pianist Thomas Lauder says, “If the United Nations had a house band in 1962, Pink Martini would be that band.” In 1994 in his hometown of Portland, Oregon, Thomas Lauderdale was working in politics, thinking that one day he would run for mayor. Like other politicians-in-training, he went to every political fundraiser, but was dismayed to find the music at events underwhelming, lackluster, loud and un-neighborly. Drawing inspiration from music from around the world – crossing genres of classical, jazz and old-fashioned pop – and hoping to appeal to conservatives and liberals alike, he founded Pink Martini in 1994 to provide more beautiful and inclusive musical soundtracks.

Featuring a dozen musicians, Pink Martini performs its multilingual repertoire on concert stages and with symphony orchestras throughout Europe, Asia, Greece, Turkey, the Middle East, Northern Africa, Australia, New Zealand, South America and North America. The band has played with more than 50 orchestras around the world, including multiple engagements with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Boston Pops, the National Symphony, the San Francisco Symphony, the Cleveland Orchestra, and the BBC Concert Orchestra. The band has collaborated and performed with numerous artists, including Jimmy Scott, Carol Channing, Jane Powell, Rufus Wainwright, Henri Salvador, Chavela Vargas, Rita Moreno, Michael Feinstein, filmmaker Gus Van Sant and many more. Singer Storm Large began performing with Pink Martini in 2011 when China Forbes took a leave to undergo vocal cord surgery. China made a full recovery and now both continue performing with Pink Martini. Through the generosity of The Portland Group, Arlene Schnitzer, Linda and Manny Rider, Nancy Stone, Robin and Carlyn Stonehill, and Helene Galen, Pink Martin returns to the McCallum Theatre for five performances. Friday, January 29 through Tuesday, February 2. Ticket prices are $97, $77, $57 and $37, depending on performance and seating and are available at www.mccallumtheatre.com, or by calling (760) 340-2787. The McCallum Theatre, located at 73-000 Fred Waring Drive, Palm Desert.

One year later, Thomas called China Forbes, a Harvard classmate, and asked her to join Pink Martini. They began to write

he Southwest Arts Festival, Indio 2016 will take place at the Empire Polo Club in Indio from Friday, January 29 through Sunday, January 31. Featuring traditional, contemporary, and abstract fine works of art by more than 250 acclaimed artists, categories include clay, drawing, glass, jewelry, metal, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, textile and other arts. Exhibiting at the 30th annual Festival are two Los Angeles area artists with ties to the city’s film industry. The work of artist Stephen Schubert, a former actor whose abstracts on birch panels vibrate with great depth of color and surprising imagery, was prominently featured in the film “Dinner for Schmucks.” David Palmer, a Pasadenabased artist who combines the vocabulary of Pop Art with an Italian Renaissance sensibility, has also created digital effects for feature films, including Spider-Man 3 and the first Harry Potter movie. Elaine Trei uses watercolors and oils to showcase her love of nature and color, creating intensely colorful, engaging and slightly impressionistic paintings at her studio in Big Bear Lake. The works of plein air artists and La Quinta residents Diane McClary and Silvio Silvestri have been influenced by their studies with other painters. Returning from Utah, Sue Kroll primarily created acrylic paintings until she discovered scratch board art, which offers a

promise of detail that is difficult to achieve with paint. The jewelry art of Palm Desert resident Gunn Trigere has also undergone a transition, from sterling silver and handwrought accessories, to colorful glass. California Central Coast artist Georganna Dean, stunning photograph “Agave Temple” was selected as the signature poster of the 2016 Festival, converted from a traditional darkroom to digital photography and printing in 2000. Cathedral City artist Richard Curtner uses an X-Acto knife to cut colors, words and phrases from magazines, which he carefully glues together and varnishes to create detailed collages. Former biologist Mark Doolittle works with hand tools to intricately carve gourds, exotic hardwoods and burls into unique designs and lifelong woodworker Walter Wogee builds ergonomic rockers – each a unique piece of functional art–and other furniture. These artists and many more will be featured at the Southwest Arts Festival. New this year is the popular Objet Trouvé Found Art Festival, representing an artistic style that uses everyday objects and ‘found’ materials to create stimulating visual displays. The three-day family friendly festival is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily and admission is Seniors–$8, General–$10, Three-Day Pass–$12 and Children 14 and under–Free. here’s a solitary feel to this Virgo moon, but make no mistake, none of us are lone travelers on this journey. True, sometimes you do happen to be the only one on a particular road at a particular time of day. Don’t let this unnerve you. Stay the path — it will take you where you need to be, and the others will be there waiting. ARIES (March 21-April 19). Does it feel like you’re living to get a message, phone call, email or word at all from a certain person? Well, that’s no way to live. Take back your power by not caring. TAURUS (April 20-May 20). You are no longer a passive observer in your group. Your opinion matters too much. Your observations are invaluable. Your involvement is immeasurable. From this point on, you are involved, big-time. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). The light conversation and casual questions you ask might satisfy more than just your curiosity; your interest is likely the attention another person has been quietly craving. CANCER (June 22-July 22). There are many ways to be powerful. Stay aware of the more insidious ones. Limit your exposure to anyone who would try to use your fear or weakness against you as a psychological weapon. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). You’ll find satisfaction in hearsay or be captivated in unex-

pected ways by a story - fun, but don’t trust it or act on what might turn out to be false. Small-town intrigue will likely amount to nothing more than trivial gossip. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). The theme carries over (and will for the next few days). Hopefully, you can find a way to delight in the slight insufficiency you are experiencing, because others certainly will. You’ll go straight to their hearts! LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). You’ll delight in contemplation. You can turn an idea over in your mind so many different ways that you are certain to find a way of looking at it that no one has ever thought of before. Share your talent. Your point of view is needed. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). You do not often give your unqualified approval, but there is something you’ll experience today that unfolds in such a spot-on, perfect way that you cannot find a single thing to judge negatively about it. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). Your imagination is strong now. Steer it well. You can fantasize your way out of a harsh, emotional desert and into an oasis lush with love, beauty and excitement. Or you can dwell on your fear and be miserable. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). To commiserate with someone doesn’t always automatically gladden them, but today it works just fine. Your manner of connecting with others could even inspire a miraculous healing. You have the touch today, so use it! AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). There’s something you’ll do strictly for money. It doesn’t conflict with your values, necessarily; it’s just that you really wouldn’t bother if money weren’t involved. You have bills, after all. Get in there and get it done. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). People do strange things when they feel cornered. Sometimes they issue a preemptive strike. Avoid all that by giving everyone a graceful out, keeping things easy breezy and letting go of certain expectations.

Sonny Bono approached Ric Janie and Rosene Supple to partner with Hughes him in making his vision of a Film Festival become a reality. The 27th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival generated much buzz in media with more than 2.5 billion in print and electronic impressions for Palm Springs. Stars, Directors, Producers and film makers began their awards campaign, as the Palm Springs International Film Festival is the first awards show on the campaign trail for the Golden Globes and ultimately the Academy Award’s coveted Oscar. With the 174 films from over 60 countries, there have been four other theaters added to the screening locations. Camelot Theater screened 67 of the films with stars, producers, directors and film makers showing up to meet the fans and viewers. Added to the lineup of other Film Festivals on the Camelot Theater calendar is the Documentary Film Festival which was started by Oliver Stone, Film Noir, Short Film Fest, Cinema Diverse Festival and the latest Sci-Fi Festival. Included in the excitement of the Film Festivals is special screenings like Wednes-

day Classic Film Night. The Camelot has a Sustainable Saturday Free Film Series. Saturday is a good time to shop at the Farmers Market and take in a free film. This boutique theater always has a line up of interesting films that are scheduled between the Film Festivals and special showings which are enjoyed by the attendees and visitors who come to this resort destination for a unique experience. Melvyn’s Restaurant was at one time a two-acre estate in the 1920s that was transformed in 1935 by Ruth Hardy into a 20-room hotel with a restaurant added to accommodate dining for the hotel guests. In 1975 Mel Haber purchased the Ingleside Inn and that is when Melvyn’s Restaurant was born. The decor is upbeat elegance with just enough color to set a romantic mood under the chandelier lighting. Table side food preparation of special menu items is served by staff in linen jackets who are eloquent and well versed on menu selections. The 1895 carved oak and mahogany bar is inviting and magnificent and has been the meeting place of many celebrities whose photos and artist renderings adorn the walls where Mel has shared a glass of wine and gathered memories that are chronicled in his two books. Robin Leach featured Melvyn’s more than twice in “Life Styles of The Rich and Famous” and it has been written up many times in travel and glamorous publications. Mel has become the “go-to person” by journalists both stateside and internationally who want to gather information about stars like Frank Sinatra. Of all the female celebrities and stars Mel Haber has met over the years he was quick to provide me the name of his favorite - Dinah Shore - “she was so sensuous and soft you just wanted to hug her.”

The 1895 carved oak and mahogany bar at Melvyn’s Another one-of-a-kind fixture at Melvyn’s is the old landline pay phone, that still work, in the men’s restroom. The shiny black grande piano is perfect for the musicians who play everything from classical, to jazz, or rock ‘n roll.

reunion at Azul’s, the party takes place upstairs where they slept between shifts. George and Paris roll out the red carpet for these cast of characters who still complain “the downfall of the business was when Verizon bought GTE.”

Cupid’s arrow has been very active over the years at Melvyn’s and topping off the evening with champagne and dancing has led four of my friends down the aisle. Mel himself admits that he found his love over two years ago just sitting in his usual seat at the end of the bar. At a birthday party that I recently attended it was announced that Mel had been responsible for a very unusual gift, a piece of furniture that resides in the couple’s living room, a bar stool where he courted his current wife and two previous ladies he married.

In 2005 George salvaged the old vacated building and turned it into a party facility and a location locals and tourists dine and enjoy. One of their famous friends who visits when in town is the writer/producer/director Del Shores. This City that encourages diversity ran “Sordid Lives” for two years and all of us enjoyed attending those special Sordid Lives parties. Leslie Jordan has been a visitor and everyone at Azul’s would be happy to help this incredible comedic character up to the bar.

Azul’s aka George’s Alibi was the site of the old Palm Springs fire and police station in the early ’30s and later became the GTE Telephone Company Office. Yes, these old fashioned operators gave Lily Tomlin the material to develop one of her characters, “one ringy dingy” we all know. Every year these ladies have a

For the month of February - the month of love and romance and the celebration of Modernism Week - you may want to stop by for a drink with George and Paris. Visit their gift shop and look for the special T-shirt that reads “Do you believe in love at first sight or do you need another drink?” Excitement and fun is always in the air.

Film Review

‘Ride Along 2’

gets laughs but covers recycled comedic ground anyway, but I really think it was just to get a cheap chuckle by turning Cube’s character into a pixelated, gun-popping passenger. The yapping, hyperkinetic Hart’s a funny guy, and Cube, the “grumpy,” grounded straightman, somehow still gets his share of the laughs. But most of the banter-y jokes are lame, the writing unimaginative and uninspired, the plot thinner than a thong bikini and the performances so limp and lazy they seem to evaporate in the Florida heat. And too much of Ride Along 2 simply isn’t funny enough—or anything enough—to justify the trip. This jaunt to Miami feels like a quick cash-dash coasting on recycled comedy fumes.

Kevin Hart, Ken Jeong and Ice Cube By Neil Pond

T

he first time rapper-turned-actor Ice Cube and comedian-turnedactor Kevin Hart teamed up for a cop-comedy caper, Ride Along in 2012, critics mostly turned up their noses. But audiences turned over their dollars, making the moderately budgeted movie Neil a substantial boxPond office hit.

So of course—the mismatched duo is back for more comedic crime shenanigans in Ride Along 2. This time around, hardboiled Atlanta vice detective James Patton (Cube) heads to Miami to investigate an interstate drug pipeline. He wants to bring along dweeby rookie officer Ben Harper (Hart), who’ll soon marry his sister (Tika Sumpter), just to prove once and for all that Ben doesn’t have the right stuff to be a cop. Ken Jeong (from the TV series Dr. Ken) plays a computer hacker who becomes a

shrill, shriek-y and squeaky third wheel on this careening comedy tricycle. Olivia Munn’s Miami police detective has some swaggering self-defense mojo that can bring any tough guy to his knees—but the movie doesn’t miss an opportunity to show her sweaty-’n’-sexy in a sports bra, and have Hart’s character make a wowza crack about it. Veteran TV and movie actor Benjamin Bratt walks the line between smooth and sinister by sprinkling some Scarface sauce onto his role as a shady businessman.

climax at a shipping-container yard. At least the movie sometimes seems to wink at its own clichés. “Classic!” Ben says. “Something always goes down in a container yard!”

‘Ride Along 2’

Starring Kevin Hart and Ice Cube Directed by Tom Story Rated: PG-13

In one scene, Ben evades a car of bad guys by imagining it’s a game of Grand Theft Auto. I’d like to think director Story wanted to make a “meta” statement about how many action scenes in today’s blockbusters are little more than multimillion-dollar build-outs of videogames

Coachella Valley Premier of ‘Already Tomorrow in Hong Kong’

Director Tom Story, whose resume also includes Fantastic Four, Barbershop, Taxi and Think Like a Man, was also in the driver’s seat for the original Ride Along. Maybe that’s why it feels like we’ve ridden by everything before, in the previous Ride Along and in almost every other buddy-cop comedy.

esert Film Society presents the Coachella Valley premiere of “Already Tomorrow in Hong Kong.” Showing is on Saturday, February 6 at 9:30 a.m. Doors open at 9 a.m. with film introduction at 9:20 a.m.

There’s a frantic foot chase, a wild car chase, a bootylicious nightclub party and a lavish bash at a millionaire’s mansion, where Ben screams, stumbles and scampers as he’s chased by an alligator. (It’s about as funny as you think it is—or isn’t.) There’s gunfire, explosions and a
