Hot Air Balloon & Fine Art Fest in Cathedral City

T

he 2nd Annual Hot Air Balloon & Fine Art Festival will be held in the Cathedral City Town Square, a Fine Art Festival, will be held on February 13-14. This year’s event will include more hot air balloons, gourmet food trucks, more activities and now a fine art festival, produced by West Coast Artists! With activities from early morning till late at night, there is something for everyone. West Coast Artists will feature artists presenting their original work in all mediums of two and three dimensional fine art, including paintings in acrylic, oils and watercolors, photography, etchings, sculpture in clay, glass, metal, stone and wood. Each artist will be present to meet with the public and discuss their work. All work is available for purchase. Contemporary craftsmen present unique styles of individually handcrafted functional and decorative pottery, raku, turned wood vessels and gourd art. Many are one-of-a-kind works of sculpture in bronze, clay, blown glass, paper, metal, stone and wood. Gifted artisans present their original custom designed and fabricated jewelry, furniture, stained glass and weavings. There is something for every taste and budget. West Coast Artists’ shows, with over 30 years of experience, are distinguished by their scope of diversity and the wide variety of fine art. Presented are innovative works in differing styles of contemporary, traditional, modern and southwest art for the discriminating individual or corporate

collector. Talented artists, numerous and varied, are proud to personally present their unique work in acrylic, collage, etchings, mixed media, oils, pencil, watercolors, digital and traditional photography. West Coast Artists’ shows are truly unique fusion of art, culture, and living. They are like visiting numerous galleries at the same place and time, in a beautiful outdoor setting. Our goal is to bring to appreciative new audiences a wealth of everchanging art from accomplished artists and craftsmen. Our artists provide their patrons a finer appreciation that comes from sharing time and space with a piece of art, watching the sun color and shade a work over the course of an afternoon. The Hot Air Balloon and Fine Art Festival is located in Cathedral City, right in front of City Hall in the town square park. Right along Highway 111 (E. Palm Canyon Dr).

Lisa Fischer

at McCallum Theatre

T

he McCallum Theatre and Fitz’s Jazz Cafe at the McCallum present Grammy Award-winning R&B vocalist/songwriter Lisa Fischer on Saturday, February 13, at 8 p.m. Lisa Fischer is stepping into the spotlight at last. After four decades of singing background for icons like the Rolling Stones, Tina Turner, Chaka Khan, and Nine Inch Nails, Lisa is finally offering her own heartfelt songs, accompanied by her new band Grand Baton. It’s been a whirlwind, with performances at the Newport and Monterey Jazz Festivals, at the Hollywood Bowl, and all over the world. The unexpected success of the Oscarwinning documentary “Twenty Feet from Stardom” altered the course of Lisa’s musical journey. The film told her story, complete with clips of her 1991 Grammywinning R&B hit “How Can I Ease the Pain,” live footage of her legendary duets with Mick Jagger on “Gimme Shelter,” and glowing testimonials from famous colleagues like Sting, Patti Austin, and Chris Botti. It showcased her virtuosity and vulnerability, opened a window on her sometimes lonely life on the road, earned her a second Grammy award, and left audiences eager to see and hear more. Lisa has found ideal co-conspirators in Grand Baton. The band’s organic fusion of African, Middle Eastern, and Caribbean rhythms, psychedelic soul, and progressive rock awakens and ignites Lisa’s flexibility and freedom of expression. The band has helped her realize her lifelong desire to make music that heals but still rocks the house. In performance, she draws from an eclectic palette of influences, whether putting her stamp on Led Zeppelin and Little Willie John or recasting rock anthems from her tours with the Stones and Tina Turner. While Lisa’s range is legendary, her greatest gift is the ability to connect, to reach the hearts of her listeners. Raised in Brooklyn, Lisa emerged from New York’s studio scene in the early-‘80s and quickly became session singer royalty. She paid

her dues as a member of the Marvelettes before Luther Vandross invited her to sing background with his touring band. He became her mentor and friend, nurturing her talent over a 20-year period until his passing in 2005. Lisa joined the Rolling Stones for their 1989 Steel Wheels tour and has graced their stage for 26 years. Lisa, singing with Mick Jagger, is a quintessential rock and roll goddess, soaring above the band’s earthy groove. In 1991, in the midst of touring with both the Stones and Luther Vandross, Lisa recorded a solo album, “So Intense.” The album featured Lisa’s songwriting collaborations with producer Narada Michael Walden on both the Top 10 hit “Save Me” and the #1 and Grammy-winning single “How Can I Ease the Pain.” Lisa also won the Grammy for “Best R&B Vocal Performance, Female,” an honor she shared with Patti LaBelle, whose award-winning project “Burnin’” also featured Lisa on background vocals. Whether fronting her own band or supporting other artists, Lisa’s passion for music leads her to constant growth and experimentation with different styles. Tickets are priced at $77, $57, $47 and $37 and are available online at www. mccallumtheatre.com or by calling the McCallum Theatre Box Office at (760) 340-2787. McCallum Theatre, located at 73-000 Fred Waring Drive, Palm Desert.

Curtain Time

‘Sordid Lives’ at Palm Canyon Theatre By Gary Walker For Desert Entertainer

I

f anyone doubts why Palm Canyon Theatre is presenting their fifth production of Del Shores’ “Sordid Lives,” its regular run was sold out before I started writing this column. Palm Canyon Theatre has now added two additional performances this weekend, February 12-14.

With much of the same cast from previous shows, “Sordid Lives” deals with the shenanigans that happen when three generations of a small-town Texas family gather for a funeral and all the sad and trashy secrets are laid bare. Award-winning actress Judith Chapman heads the veteran cast that includes Joey English, Mike Hadley, Shirley LeMaster, Mary Ewing, Dan Graff, Terry Huber, Cheryl Hunter, Alex Enriquez, Brad Vickery, Morgana Corelli and PCT Co-Artistic Director Se Layne. Curtain Time: “Sordid Lives” by Del Shores, 8 p.m. Friday; 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday; 2 and 8 p.m. Sunday, February 12-14, Palm Canyon Theatre, 538 North Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs. Info: (760) 323-5123 or www.palmcanyontheatre.org.

“The Producers” Mel Brooks’ record-breaking musical “The Producers” takes the stage at McCallum Theatre for five performances Friday - Sunday, February 26-28. Jessica Ernest and Richard Lafleur lead the roadshow company in the hilarious spoof of Broadway “success” when a scheming producer and his mousy ac-

Valinor Quartet, the second concert presented by The Palm Springs Community Concert Association countant concoct a “foolproof” plan to create the biggest flop on the Great White Way and walk away with the oversubscribed investments. The original film version starred Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder, with Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick taking the original Broadway roles of the conspiratorial Bialystock and Bloom. The stage version won a record 12 Tony Awards. This is truly a “boffo” hit. Curtain Time: Mel Brooks’ “The Producers,” 8 p.m. Friday, February 26; 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday, February 27; 2 and 7 p.m. Sunday, February 28, McCallum Theatre, 73-000 Fred Waring Way, Palm Desert. The rest of the weekend performances in February are the following: • 5 p.m. Sunday, February 21: Foghat, featuring boogie-rock and the dynamic use of the electric slide guitar. • 5 p.m. Saturday, February 27: ”Broadway Show Stoppers,” featuring

Broadway stars and students from David Green’s Musical Theatre University. Curtain Time: Collin Raye, 5 p.m. Sunday, February 14, Music in the Park, Rancho Mirage Community Park, visit www.ranchomirageca.gov for more information.

T

reat your sweetheart (and yourself) to a fun day of Art Under the Umbrellas at Old Town La Quinta to select the Perfect Valentine’s Gift from one of the 80 marvelously talented artisans and craftspeople setup along Old Town’s streets. You will discover an incredible array of jewelry, paintings, ceramics, sculptures, mixed media, photography, wood and more. To complement the various artist exhibits, patrons in town will be entertained by the Steve Madaio Band as they explore the artist booths and visit Old Town’s selection of trendy boutiques. A fabulous lunch is definitely in order at one of the local restaurants. Featured artists on February 13 are: Dorothee Naumburg, master goldsmith - German born Naumburg is renowned for her bold, sculptural designs created in 18K gold, 14K gold and platinum, interwoven with the rich colors of fine gemstones and the muted hues of rare pearls. Dorothee continually strives to create a sculptural feel for her jewelry. How the pieces visually flow from all angles is key to her designs. Dorothee’s artistic passion evolved from drawing and sculpting in her early childhood to an intense desire to become a “goldsmith” in her later teenage years. Nurtured in that quest by her painter mother and engineer father, she embarked on a three year goldsmith apprenticeship under a Master jeweler near Frankfurt, Germany, learning traditional goldsmith techniques of fabrication.

Zebra by Dorothee Naumburg the area that really sets him apart from his peers is Aldrich’s novel style and technique of Abstract Photo-Painting. This process combines his original abstract paintings with photography, providing an unusual tool for Bart to paint with photography, creating inventive landscapes of color, texture, shape, form, depth and emotion. Additionally, his striking digital images are dye infused directly onto aluminum panels, integrating the image with the framing, producing a stunning shimmering effect that creates added depth and texture to the artwork from different angles. ‘Hail, Caesar!’

Coen Brothers deliver spoof of movies’ golden era By Neil Pond

P

eople don’t want facts—they want to believe!” says Eddie Mannix (Josh Brolin), a 1950s Hollywood studio “fixer” in the new Coen Brothers comedy Hail Caesar!, a sprawling, star-studded spoof of the golden age of moviemaking. “

What people believe, and what they make-believe, are the building blocks of Hollywood itself. And they’re certainly the cornerstones of the Coens’ lavish, multi-tiered parody that takes satirical shape around the production of a fictional studio’s major new movie, Hail, Caesar!, A Tale of the Christ, a Bible-based saga a la Ben-Hur, Spartacus and The Robe. When the film’s lunkheaded leading man, Baird Whitlock (George Clooney), is kidnapped, Mannix has to find him and get the money-train movie back on track.

pregnant with an out-of-wedlock child. Capitol’s prissy British prestige-picture director (Ralph Fiennes) is at wit’s end trying to wrangle the company’s riding, roping singing cowboy (Alden Ehrenreich) into more refined roles. And a tapdancing song-and-dance hotshot (Channing Tatum) glides across the set of a new musical, but his light-on-his-feet moves may be hiding heavier secrets. Look: There’s Jonah Hill, Frances McDormand and the guy (Wayne Knight) who played Newman in Seinfeld! Even if you don’t know anything about Hollywood’s “Red Scare,” you’ll still get a chuckle out of a boatload of Commies bobbing off the California coastline. And Ehrenreich’s young sodbuster charming his studio-arranged dinner date (Veronica Osorio) by twirling a strand of spaghetti like a lariat will rope your heart, too.

But in the meantime, he’s also got his hands full with other problems, and other films. His job is keeping the machinery of Capitol Pictures Studios whirling, keeping its numerous stars in line and out of trouble, and keeping the whiff of scandal away from prying gossip columnists, particularly twin sisters Thora and Thessily Thacker (Tilda Swinton).

For many viewers, the quirky movies of writer-directors Joel and Ethan Coen have always been a bit of an acquired taste. Sure, most everybody now falls in line to applaud the genius of Fargo, No Country For Old Men, True Grit, The Big Lebowski and O Brother, Where Art Thou. But where was the box-office love for The Hudsucker Proxy, Barton Fink, The Man Who Wasn’t There and Inside Llewyn Davis?

But you’d be hard-pressed to find many filmmakers who love movies, and making movies, more than the Coens. And that love is evident in every carefully crafted frame of this gloriously goofy homage to the glory days of big studios, big stars and the big wheels that churned out the spectacles of Hollywood’s dream factory from a bygone era.

somehow disappointed. Not me, and not a chance. Strike up another win for the Coens, I say. I’m a believer. Hooray for Hollywood, and “Hail, Caesar!”

While Hail, Caesar! is looking backward with such comedic affection, however, it’s also making a sly, playfully subversive statement about our “need” for entertainment, the importance of escapism and how movies have always been— and hopefully will always be—a “potion of balm for the toils of all mankind.”

ost people will find that the mind likes to be in charge, and the heart likes to let it think that is definitely the case. However, the harmony between Venus and Jupiter suggests that hearts won’t go where they don’t want to go. Furthermore, hearts have sneaky ways of getting where they do want to go, regardless of what the mind dictates. ARIES (March 21-April 19). Focus exclusively on positive, desirable options. If it’s not a win for everyone involve it’s not good enough for you, either. This bold approach will eventually lead to your promotion. TAURUS (April 20-May 20). Sign up. Volunteer. Say yes. It doesn’t matter if you know how to approach the task at hand, as you’ll learn along the way. Your attitude makes you a perfect fit for anything that sounds fun to you. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). While most compliments are nice to hear, they are not all created equal. Someone will elevate verbal admiration to an art form. You’ll love how it feels to receive these kudos, and you’ll learn to give as such. CANCER (June 22-July 22). If you’re wondering what keeps someone coming back and back and back to you, it’s all that fresh excitement, kindness and tenderness you give. You never give your attention the same way twice. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). You’ll appreciate the ones who keep their correspondence short and to the point. You tend to accept calls and visits from this type because you know it’s not going to drag out. You’d do well to emulate this succinct style going forward.

much responsibility — that’s because you know deep down that you’ll give yourself fully to it! SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). Many want to be in your “club,” whatever that means to you these days. For some it’s a professional situation. One warning: Make sure the ones you take on are really ready and qualified to play at your level. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). The negative emotions needn’t be shoved aside; nor should they be obsessed over. Acknowledge these feelings as natural and acceptable. They will flow through you and dissipate. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). Inaction frustrates you. What are they waiting for? The truth is, they are waiting for an invitation from someone like you. Go on now; throw the doors open and encourage them to walk through. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). You see right through the sad people putting on a good face. You also see through marketing ploys, ulterior motives and anyone trying to achieve an end through the act of pretending. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). Someone may be pressuring you, but don’t rush to make a choice. When you do make up your mind, you’ll strongly lean toward the option that gives you the most space and possibly an escape hatch.

CROSSWORD ANSWERS

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). Unlike zoo animals, people often get to design their own cages. It sometimes takes them a while to realize this, though. You have more freedom than you think. Current boundaries are either illusory, self-imposed, or both. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). Your soul is searching for someone to nurture. At the same time, it scares you to take on too
