Hershey Felder at McCallum Theatre
H
ershey Felder returns to the McCallum Theatre in a new tour-de-force performance as Irving Berlin. From the depths of antiSemitism in Czarist Russia to New York’s Lower East Side, and ultimately all of the country and the world, Irving Berlin’s story epitomizes the American Dream. With original lyrics and music by Irving Berlin, book by Hershey Felder and direction by Trevor Hay, it is a virtuoso performance that brings to life the remarkable story of Irving Berlin, long thought of as “America’s Composer.” Featuring the composer’s most popular and enduring songs, including “Alexander’s Ragtime Band,” “Always,” “Blue Skies,” “God Bless America,” “Puttin’ on the Ritz,” “There’s No Business Like Show Business,” “White Christmas” and the score of Annie Get Your Gun, Hershey Felder’s masterful creation of character and musical performance will make this evening with Irving Berlin an unforgettable journey in song. Hershey Felder created and performed George Gershwin Alone, which played on Broadway at the Helen Hayes Theatre, in the West End at the Duchess Theatre, and in theatres around the country. His Composers Sonata—George Gershwin Alone; Monsieur Chopin; Beethoven, As I Knew Him; Maestro Bernstein; Hershey Felder as Franz Liszt in Musik; Hershey Felder as Irving Berlin—has been presented at dozens of theatres across the U.S. and around the world. His compositions and recordings include Aliyah, Concerto for Piano and Orchestra; Fairytale, a musical; Les Anges de Paris, Suite for Violin and Piano; Song Settings; Saltimbanques for Piano and Orchestra; Etudes Thematiques for Piano; and An American Story for Actor and Orchestra. As director, he premiered Mona Golabek in The Pianist of Willesden Lane at the Geffen Playhouse in 2012 and, earlier this year, produced and created scenic design for Taylor Hackford’s Louis and Keely ‘Live’ at the Sahara. Mr. Felder has been a scholar-in-residence at Harvard University’s Department of Music and is married to Kim Campbell, the first female Prime Minister of Canada.
Hershey Felder as Irving Berlin Trevor Hay directed the world premieres of An American Story for Actor and Orchestra, Abe Lincoln’s Piano and Hershey Felder as Franz Liszt In Musik. He is Associate Director for Mona Golabek’s The Pianist of Willesden Lane. Mr. Hay went on to various aspects of production on more than 80 presentations, including the Broadway productions of Jack O’Brien’s Damn Yankees, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and Twyla Tharpe’s The Times They Are A-Changin’. Included in his 23 seasons at the Old Globe were eleven seasons of the Summer Shakespeare Festival Repertory, as well as work August: Osage County, directed by Sam Gold, and George Gershwin Alone, Monsieur Chopin and Maestro Bernstein. Through the generosity of Dan and Brooke Koehler, the McCallum Theatre presents Hershey Felder as Irving Berlin for four performances – Tuesday, March 29, at 8 p.m., Wednesday, March 30, at 8 p.m., and Thursday, March 31, at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Tickets prices are $27-$77, depending on performance time and seating and are available at www.mccallumtheatre.com or by calling the box office at (760) 340-2787. oyote StageWorks, the awardwinning Actors’ Equity professional theater company, will present eleven performances of “Art” by French playwright Yasmina Reza at the Annenberg Theater beginning March 25. A 1998 Tony Award winner for Best Play that has been packing in audiences worldwide ever since, “Art” raises questions about art and friendship. In an ironic twist of casting, the comedy will bring together on stage for the first time three original founding members of Coyote StageWorks: Founding Artistic Director Chuck Yates, as well as Larry Raben and David Engel, who are company members and serve on the board of the organization. They have been friends for more than 25 years and the Desert Theatre League has bestowed numerous Desert Star Awards on each. “Throughout the course of the play the characters wonder how they all became friends and whether their friendship is truly worth all the tension,” said Yates. “It’s exciting to me that we have three long-time friends playing three longtime friends. There is shorthand that we as actors can bring to this piece because Larry, David and I know each other very well. I don’t think you can discount the importance of that history. We’re like family.” The play begins with Marc (Yates) telling the audience that his old friend Serge (Raben) purchased a white painting. A

disagreement regarding its artistic value ensues, with each man trying to convince their mutual friend Ivan (Engel) to their point of view. Ivan’s desire to remain neutral angers the two friends instead. The production is directed by famed actor and director Don Amendolia, who is known for his work in film (“Fearless,” “Wayne’s World,” “Boogie Nights”), television (“Seinfeld,” “Frasier,” “Law & Order”), and numerous theater productions on Broadway, Off-Broadway and regionally. “Part of what has made this play such a hit for so many years is that it is just so damn funny,” explained Amendolia. “We all have those important friendships and relationships with people that we love, and also sometimes just want to smack them across the head.” Tickets for Coyote StageWorks’ production of “Art” are $45 – $55 for matinees and $50 – $60 for evening performances, and may be purchased at the Annenberg Theater box office located at the Palm Springs Art Museum or online. A Q&A session with cast members will follow Thursday matinees. For more information about Coyote StageWorks and its 2016 season, please visit www.coyotestageworks.org. Group sales, (760) 318-0024. Film Review
‘Miracles From Heaven’ fully dramatizes near-death experience
to describe when someone’s chronic condition suddenly—poof!—just disappears. But Christy Beam knows what to call it: a miracle. Miracles From Heaven is Hollywood’s latest foray into the faith-based market, a “message” film made for audiences who’ve indicated they’ll shell out and line up to see flicks that uphold and promote Christian values.
Christy (Jennifer Garner) on the front porch of their house in Miracles From Heaven By Neil Pond
C
hristy Beam didn’t believe in miracles—until one smacked her over the head.
Well, actually, it was her preteen daughter who got smacked. It’s all in Christy’s 2015 book, Miracles From Heaven, now a movie starring Jennifer Garner as the mom and Kylie Rogers, a 12-year-old veteran of more than 20 small-ish movie and TV roles, as her youngest of three girls, Annabel. The setup: Annabel suffers terribly from a chronic, incurable disorder that blocks her bowels, distends her belly, causes her awful pain, restricts her diet
to liquids and sends her shuttling with Christy between their home in Texas and a treatment center in Boston. But one day, as she’s climbing the big old, dead cottonwood in her family’s yard, Annabel falls, headfirst, some 30 feet into the tree’s rotten trunk. There she remains, trapped and unconscious, until paramedics and firemen can free her. At first, everyone fears the worst; they think she’s dead. But then Annabel wakes up in the hospital with only a mild concussion—and, apparently, completely cured. One of her doctors admits that medical science has no proper term
Director Patricia Riggen—whose previous project, The 33, was based on another true event, the 2010 Chilean mining disaster—has an eye for drama and a feel for character, and she treats the Beams as real people with real lives. Garner is believable as a frustrated, fiercely loving mom wrestling with her own crisis of faith. Queen Latifah provides comic relief as a Boston waitress.
her near-death, out-of-body experience. “Miracles are everywhere,” Christy ultimately tells her church congregation, alluding not just to her daughter’s recovery, but to smaller, everyday acts of goodness, kindness, generosity and forgiveness. There’s a graceful, lovely scene mid-movie where we watch as Annabel gazes at a modern art painting, looking into the colors and the swirls, and we see a close-up of her face as something transcendent happens; her soft blue eyes fill with tears, and she smiles. If you can find a miracle—or whatever you want to call it—in the bottom of a hollow tree, why not in the brushstrokes of a painting? And a lot of other places, too.
The movie does dwell for a l-o-o-o-n-g time on Annabel’s suffering—it sometimes feels like a bit of a preteen Passion Play—and you have to wait for what feels like an eternity for the Big Event. The movie counterbalances the faith of Annabel’s dad, Kevin (hunky Martin Henderson, who plays Nathan Riggs on TV’s Grey’s Anatomy), with Christy’s doubts and worries about why her prayers are going unanswered—or unheard. But it really trowels on the gospel goo in the home stretch, when Annabel shares details of

Don’s famous solo cadenza on Buddy Rich’s “Channel One Suite” as the jazz tenor chair utilizing circular breathing has become known as a classic among music educators and musicians. Performing Friday evening April 1, is Don Menza, saxophonist, arranger, composer, jazz educator, and his quintet which includes Don Rader on trumpet, Theo Saunders on piano, Chris Conner on bass, and Dick Weller on drums. Menza’s quintet will play the music of saxophonist Stan Getz who was considered a pioneer of cool, bossa nova, and modern jazz with “The Sound” that had an unmistakable warm, lyrical tone that was influenced by the whispy, mellow timbre of his idol Lester Young. Like Stan Getz, Don Menza reaches for perfection in the playing of the saxophone.
Saturday evening, April 2, the Gary Foster Quintet will perform a musical tribute to Shelly Manne, arranged by Mark Masters of the American Jazz Institute. The quintet includes Gary Foster on woodwinds, Steve Huffsteter on trumpet, Putter Smith on bass, Ed Czach on piano, and Kendall Kay on drums.
