Indian Wells Arts Festival Amid the abundance of attractions in the Coachella Valley this season, the Indian Wells Arts Festival, April 1-3, stands out with its sophistication and diversity, bringing a world of art and culture to the heart of the desert. With more than 200 artists representing more than 30 countries around the world, the festival presents top creative talents in a truly interactive experience, transforming the Indian Wells Tennis Garden into an artisan village and encouraging lively discussion between festivalgoers and artists. Artists will demonstrate their creative processes, with David Falossi transforming massive stones into elegant sculpture, Bruce Freund braving 2,000-degree heat to fashion his one-of-a-kind blown-glass creations and Antonio Mendoza demonstrating millennia-old Zapotec weaving techniques from southern Mexico. Venus Studios will help get visitors’ own creativity flowing with painting lessons. The international flair will be presented by such artists as potter Tatsuo Sagane of Japan, batik and print creator Paul Nzalamba of Uganda, and jewelry designer Hannie Goldgewicht of Costa Rica. Local luminaries include painter Diane Morgan of Indian Wells, stoneworker Russell Mott of Desert Hot Springs, and woodworker Mark Doolittle of Joshua Tree.
Music is woven into the festival’s fabric, with performances on stage and out among the grounds. Independent Music Awards-nominated band Incendio - World Guitar will energize the atmosphere along with organ trio Rumproller featuring vocalist Dawn Bishop; the ever popular trumpeter Steve Madaio and local chamber ensemble Dolce Vita. Youth is another particular focus of the Indian Wells Arts Festival, with its commitment to fostering an appreciation of art for future generations. Festival partners from Rancho Mirage and Cathedral City high schools will foreshadow coming trends and techniques in digital media and performing arts, and the Coachella Valley Youth Ensemble will interpret musical classics.
No event is truly a festival without food and drink, and the lineup is a foodie’s paradise. The Eggs + Champagne in The Garden brunch has been extended to noon on both Saturday and Sunday, along with the enticing and trendy new additions of the RumChata Bar and the Champagne Circle Bar. Underhills’ of 29 Palms Join Ann Congdon, as she recounts the stories of her parents, Bill and Prudie Underhill. Bill Underhill filed for his 160-acre Homestead in 1928. For the next 56 years – until his death in 1984 – Bill was passionately devoted to building the community of Twentynine Palms. He married Prudie in 1941, and together they tirelessly promoted community pride and growth through their businesses and their participation in civic organizations. Not only did they build community spirit, they also built a number of structures that chart the growth
of Twentynine Palms from a scatter of homestead cabins to its incorporation as a City. As an architect, Ann is particularly interested in those buildings, and she will use them as a timeline to illustrate the Underhills’ role in Twentynine Palms History. Lecture is held at the Old Schoolhouse Museum on Friday, April 8 at 7 p.m. Costs $5 per person at the door. Optional dinner with speaker, for more information call (760) 367-5535

The French call this a salad; we call it dinner. Granted, we took some liberties with the traditional salad, adding potatoes to make it heartier. Use a sturdy lettuce Slightly bitter greens, like like frisée or romaine. play off the crisp bacon, creamy eggs, and warm potatoes to create a delicious meal. The salad is popular throughout France, particularly in the small eateries, known as bouchons, in Lyons, a city in the Rhone-Alps region Key to the salad is the poached egg. You can use an egg poacher, of course, but if you don’t have one, go free-style. Bring a pot of salted water barely to a boil. Crack the eggs one at a time into a small cup and slide the egg gently into the water. The freshest eggs work best here, as their whites will hold together better. Cook the eggs for 2 or 3 minutes, then use a slotted spoon to remove from the water.
Salade Lyonnaise • 3 bacon slices • 2 russet potatoes,
• 3 tablespoons olive oil • 3 tablespoons red wine vinegar • 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard • 1/4 teaspoon salt • Freshly ground black pepper • 4 cups frisée or curly endive • 4 poached eggs (cooked about 2 minutes) • Shaved Parmigiano Reggiano cheese (optional) 1. Cook bacon in a large, nonstick skillet over medium heat until done, about 5 minutes. Remove bacon, reserving fat. Add potatoes to the pan; cook 5 minutes. Add leeks and continue cooking until potatoes are done, about 10 minutes, stirring frequently. 2. Combine oil, vinegar, mustard, salt and pepper in a small bowl; whisk well. 3. Toss frisée with dressing. Place on serving plates. Top each serving with potatoes, egg, crumbled bacon and cheese, if using. Serves 4.

Ten days later, on April 13, the westbound rider and mail packet completed the approximately 1,800-mile journey and arrived in Sacramento, beating the eastbound packet’s arrival in St. Joseph by two days and setting a new standard for speedy mail delivery. Although ultimately short-lived and unprofitable, the Pony Express captivated America’s imagination and helped win federal aid for a more economical overland postal system.

HOROSCOPE MARCH 31 - APRIL 6 ARIES (March 21-April 19). Brilliance in any area of life usually comes off as effortless to those who don’t know any better — but you’re not fooled. You know the work that goes into navigating complexities, and you’re willing to do it.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). Of course you prefer to deal with the trustworthy, but sometimes that’s not an option and you have to go forward anyhow. Not today. Today you can’t afford to bother with those who inspire doubt in you.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20). There are planners, and then there are “pantsers,” who prefer to throw themselves in and sort things out as they go. Such people will frighten you today until you join them in their momentto-moment approach.
SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). Usually you naturally connect with like-minded people, but because your interests and values are shifting, you will have to take a more deliberate, conscious approach to finding the people you wish to circulate among.
GEMINI (May 21-June 21). Mental pursuits ignite your energy, though you usually don’t seek them out directly. Today these pursuits will be byproducts of your social agenda, which will center on getting the undivided attention of a certain someone.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). Grudges harm most the one who holds them. For this reason you’ll let your grievances go. Another good reason is that you’re way too busy today to waste time remembering what you’re supposed to be bothered about.
CANCER (June 22-July 22). Even the most exciting, jet-fueled relationships must touch down to earth once in a while to refuel. Don’t take the slowed pace as a personal slight, because it’s actually necessary to the overall momentum of the relationship.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). You’ll be asked to speak for the group, so be sure you know what the group wants to say. You’ll be given full access to a public forum in which to communicate your ideas and start a ball rolling.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). You will simultaneously succeed at more than one important endeavor, making you the envy of your friends and colleagues. In fact, to avoid unwanted complication, you may want to keep your successes to yourself. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). You will privately send your respect, affection and admiration to perfect strangers and this will boomerang back to you, as usual. The way you think about others is the way you think about yourself.
March 31, 2016
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). You find your path to happiness by following the spark of curiosity that ignites in you this morning. Given that pursuit, and your keen awareness of everyday beauty, this day will bring smiles by the dozens. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). The friend who helps you see yourself the way others do is a treasure. If this person also possesses a kind, gentle way of delivering information, cherish this relationship, which is more valuable than gold.
