hen desert morning temperatures tend to be cooler the Agua Caliente Cultural Museum offers fascinating guided hikes with leading experts in the fields of entomology, geology, botany, and ornithology. The location, time of day, and duration of these explorations vary with the focus of hikes which are normally limited to 20 participant. Most hikes are moderate with minimal elevation gain. Recent hikes discovering the wonders of the Indian Canyons of Palm Springs have focused on the geology of Palm Canyon where hikers can learn about the natural processes that helped form the Canyon; plants and bugs of Tahquitz Canyon where you learn about bugs that

prefer certain plants….and why; and a close-up look at the scenic landscape of the seldom-hiked Murray Canyon. For bird watcher enthusiasts, the Museum’s early morning bird watching expeditions have been especially popular – whether they be at the nearby Tahquitz Canyon, at the Whitewater Preserve, or down Valley at the Salton Sea – where over 400 species of birds have been sighted. Part of the Pacific Coast Flyway, sightings have included American avocets, burrowing owls, merlins, sandhill cranes, and black-necked stilts. The final bird hike of this season will be held on Sunday, April 24 at 6:45 a.m. The Museum will offer a bird hike in Big Morongo Canyon with Kurt Leuschner, Ornithologist and Professor of Natural Resources at College of the Desert. This hike in the Eco zone elevation of Morongo Canyon offers opportunities to see a variety of species of birds not encountered at other mountain elevations of this region. Advance registration is required. For registration and more information, call (760) 833-8169 or e-mail cvictor@accmuseum.org.

A

ward-winning Coyote StageWorks presents John Peilmeier’s theatrical mystery “Agnes of God” April 20-May 1 at the Annenberg Theater in the Palm Springs Art Museum.

The Tony Award-winning play tells the story of a novice nun who gives birth and insists the child is the result of a virgin conception. The play was the basis of the hit movie of the same name, directed by Norman Jewison and starring Jane Fonda, Anne Bancroft and Meg Tilly. It was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Musical Score, Best Lead Actress (Bancroft) and Best Supporting Actress (Tilly), who also won a Golden Globe. Presented for ten local performances, there will be Q&A sessions with cast members after Thursday matinees. Directed by Don Amendolia, the cast includes Marsha Waterbury, Valorie Armstrong and Britt Adams. Curtain Time: “Agnes of God,” 2 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, Sunday; 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and Friday; 8 p.m. Saturday, Coyote StageWorks, Annenberg Theater, Palm Springs Art Museum, 101 Museum Drive. Desert Chamber Orchestra Award-Winning Additions Christian Chalifour has added some interesting elements to his already mixed programming for Desert Chamber

Orchestra’s concert “I Know That One” this Sunday afternoon, April 17, at the Indio Performing Arts Center (IPAC). “I’ve done some crazy things in my concerts, but this one is even more so. I’ve added a short audience-oriented game show, featuring snippets from Beethoven, Bach and Mozart. I’m branching out into the community.” Local award-winning pianist Derrik Lewis joins special guests Lawrence Spector (guitar) and Marissa Reinhagen (alto), who will perform a potpourri of classical and popular music. Spector has replaced “Cavatina” (the theme from “The Deer Hunter”) with the popular “Recuerdos de la Alhambra” (Memories of the Alhambra), composed in 1896 by Spanish guitarist Francisco Tarrega, highlighting the difficult “tremolo” technique usually reserved for advanced players. Curtain Time: “I Know That One,” Desert Chamber Orchestra and special guests, 3 p.m. Sunday, April 17, IPAC, 45-175 Fargo St., Indio. Tickets and information call (760) 775-5200 or visit www. indioperformingartsceenter.org.

“In the Heights” at CVHS One of Wayne Abravanel’s missions in life has been to support music in the schools, which he continues to demonstrate with the blockbuster Broadway musical “In the Heights,” running Thursday - Saturday, April 21-23 in Coachella Valley High School’s newly refurbished theater. Abravanel, an award-winning musical director and Broadway conductor, said, “This piece really resonates with my Latino cast members. They come from similar backgrounds and situations as many of the characters in the play. The music of the show is a mixture of Rap, Hip Hop and Latin pop music, which is

Astrology

Horoscopes April 14 - April 20

I

f you’ve ever been teased by a kind uncle or friend who is obviously on your side, you know how teasing, when very specific and lightly toned, can make a person feel loved and cared for. Furthermore, those who help us to laugh at ourselves are often our favorite people. This is the sort of social mischief that the Gemini moon is up to today. ARIES (March 21-April 19). When you play, you play hard: You leave it all on the field; then you move on and don’t look back. You can bet that the good you leave behind will grow on without you. You’re a force for happiness.

SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). What a difference an outfit makes — a considerable difference, indeed, today. Dressing the part will help you get comfortable in your role, not to mention the many practical reasons to put effort into sartorial appropriateness. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). Everyone notices the obvious opportunities, but you’re interested in the rare ones. This quest is what will alert you to the opportunity sitting quietly in the corner, not doing anything special to draw attention to itself.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20). Between the someone you want to be and someone you’re glad you’re not, there’s you, just as you are. And if you can spend the day being fine with that, it will be a day well-spent.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). Usually when you make a list, you feel more organized. Don’t be surprised if the first list you make today has you overwhelmed instead. Don’t give up though. This can all be sorted through.

GEMINI (May 21-June 21). You may feel like you don’t want to make your move; maybe you’re tired or just unsure. Don’t worry. This is happening, regardless of your feelings about it. You’ve an ally in fellow air signs Aquarius and Libra.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). When you’re in the shower, you’re solving problems. When you’re driving, shopping, talking to friends, even when you’re sleeping, your keen mind never stops solving and resolving all along the way.

CANCER (June 22-July 22). Freedom is precious. Savor it where you find it. You are free in so much of your life now, even though you’ve felt trapped. Push through the restrictions and you’ll see that they were mostly illusions.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). Hoping, wishing, forcing: None of it works on the flower, which opens in its own sweet time. You’re the same. No matter how they might prefer you to move, your internal clock is stronger and perfect for you.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). It’s been suggested that there’s no such thing as an ordinary cat. There’s also no such thing as an ordinary Leo, which you will illustrate so aptly in the day’s extraordinary accomplishments.

CROSSWORD ANSWERS

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). Seeing your loved ones prosper will give you pleasure far beyond what can be derived by your own successes now. This is just how your generous heart works at the moment. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). Your excellent attitude puts you in line for financial good fortune. Quite simply, you’re not afraid of the hard work, and the mess doesn’t scare you, either. You’ll welcome what others dread.

Film Review

The Boss

is laughing all the way to the bank By Neil Pond

S

teeled and shaped by a childhood of rejection in an orphanage, Michelle Darnell grew up to become a she-wolf of self-made business savvy. Now she’s a superstar investment titan and motivational-mojo guru who descends to the stage of frenzied fan events atop a giant golden phoenix in a spray of dollar bills, celebrating her brazen, competition-crushing excess like a carrottopped combination of Donald Trump, Suze Orman and Richie Rich. But the bigger they come, the harder they fall. And Michelle (Melissa McCarthy) tumbles with a titanic thud when she’s arrested for insider trading, loses her company and her home and has to serve a stint of white-collar jail time. When she’s released, with no friends and no family to call on, she bullies her way back to her former assistant, Claire (Kristen Bell), and her young daughter, Rachel (Ella Anderson). Since making her film breakthrough as part of the ensemble in Bridesmaids (2011), McCarthy moved confidently into the lead for Identity Thief, Tammy, The Heat and Spy, proving her comedic bravura and her raucous adaptability for broad physical humor. She’s a cherubfaced spark plug who’ll go to just about any lengths for a laugh. The Boss is the second of her movies directed by her husband, actor-comedian Ben Falcone, who also makes a brief appearance (as he’s done in several of her films). Hollywood has always loved a good rags-to-riches tale, and McCarthy and Falcone (who also collaborated on the screenplay, along with Steve Mallory) wring this one for raunchy, R-rated guffaws and give it some crisp contemporary pops that seem deliberately, satirically timed and tuned for the Age of Trump. But it’s also a bit of a flopping mess, a hammy hodgepodge of crude jokes, awkward slapstick gags and sometimes mean-spirited, vulgar humor that just isn’t funny. As Michelle plots her comeback, she poaches Rachel’s Dandelions scout troop to spin off her own group, Darwin’s

Kristen Bell and Melissa McCarthy Darlings, and creates a bustling new enterprise—built on Claire’s homemade brownies—to compete with the Dandelions’ cookie sales. Forget Batman v Superman. When it’s Dandelions v Darlings, things get really ugly. If you ever wondered what a Quentin Tarantino-inspired, Kill Bill-esque tween cookie-brownie street brawl might look like, well, The Boss has it. Peter Dinklage (from TV’s Game of Thrones) gets chuckles as Michelle’s spurned lover, now himself a preen-y mini-mogul obsessed with samurais. Saturday Night Live’s Cecily Strong plays Claire’s quirky supervisor at her depressing new office job. Kathy Bates has a scene as a wealthy mentor from Michelle’s past. There are underlying themes about family and belonging, about rebuilding and reconnecting, about trust and ethics. But mostly The Boss is about laughing— all the way to the bank.
