Noteworthy happenings around the desert Joshua Tree National Park asks visitors to watch out for wildlife Joshua Tree National Park is asking visitors, specifically those driving in the park, to look out for wildlife on the roadways and in parking lots. In the past week, three desert tortoises have been killed by vehicles. Two of the tortoises were run over by vehicles in a campground. Two main factors are contributing to these latest incidents. Sheer numbers of visitors to the park have greatly increased over the last couple years, causing more traffic and, with the park in bloom, animals like the desert tortoise are out enjoying the bounty of food available in the desert. Please drive with caution and be on the lookout for not only tortoises but any and all wildlife in the park. Objects that may look like a rock or branch on the road could be one of the park’s resident critters. Slow down, look out and please help reduce these senseless wildlife fatalities.

n a lifetime of unexpected twists and turns, 2017 has already proven no disappointment for Alfie Pettit. His fans across the Coachella Valley and beyond couldn’t be happier about it. Coming off a spectacular 2016 which saw the performer honored with a star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars, Pettit has launched a brand new project with the Hard Rock Hotel Palm Springs for a new collaboration called DRG BRNCH. Pettit’s drag persona, Arial Trampway, is wowing sold-out audiences every Sunday with a stellar show served up over a brunch menu complete with bottomless mimosas. “Each week, we bring together an exciting mix of drag performers both from inside and outside the Coachella Valley so the show is always fresh and new,” says Pettit.
desertentertainer.com
A desert resident for more than a decade, Pettit is continuing to produce his brand of entertainment at DRG BRNCH. But as important as the show is, he says that he also uses the weekly event as a vehicle to continue giving back to the community. Each week, Pettit includes “Pass the Purse,” raising money for local charities. “I think it’s just so important to give back to the community you love and I feel so fortunate to be in a position to be able to do something meaningful for the causes closest to my heart,” Pettit says. He also believes this is a pivotal time for Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley communities. With major investments and construction underway with even more on the horizon, Pettit is doubling-
down on the desert as a destination for recreation and entertainment. “And the Valley’s full-time residents continually demonstrate they celebrate a wide variety of high quality entertainment options,” Pettit says. “What better place to be a performer than right here? says Pettit. “Palm Springs is white-hot right now! I’m excited to be bringing new entertainment opportunities to a city that boasts it’s like noplace else,” Pettit adds. “What we’re creating here really is unique.” DRG BRNCH happens every Sunday at Hard Rock Hotel Palm Springs. Seating opens at 10:30 a.m. The show begins at 11:30 a.m. For reservations, call 760-325-9676. The hotel and restaurant are located at 150 South In- dian Canyon Dr. in Palm Springs.

The Mike Wofford/Holly Hofmann Quartet brings the finest level of jazz to Pete Carlson’s Jazz for Jazz Lovers Series
P
ete Carlson’s Jazz for Jazz Lovers Series continues to bring world-class musicians to the Coachella Valley. This week, The Mike Wofford/Holly Hofmann Quartet will take the stage at 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 8. The quartet inlcudes Mike Wofford on piano, Holly Hofmann on flute, Marshall Hawkins on bass, and Duncan Moore on drums. Wofford, was in Shelly Manne’s jazz group for 16 years, and worked with Lee Konitz, Harry “Sweets” Edison, and Benny Carter. He was musical director for Sarah Vaughn, and Ella Fitzgerald. Wofford has worked with dozens of other jazz greats, has led his own trio, quartet, and has arranged the music of Jobim, and Ellington and Strayhorn for string orchestras. He is a
musicians’ pianist who inspires as he plays, and as he absorbs what he hears, he develops his own sound. This is the very definition of a jazz musician. Hofmann has played in the San Diego area since the late ’80s and booked a National Jazz Series at the Horton Grand Hotel. In 2001 Hofmann married Wofford, and has played in different musical formats. Holly’s playing has been described as having note perfect accuracy, and in the moment fluidity. Hofmann is the standard by which the jazz flute is judged. Hawkins is a multi-instrumentalist who also plays piano, organ, and drums. Since 1985 He has taught at the Idyllwild School of Music and Arts Academy.

Since its inception Hawkins has been the jazz department head and director of the Three Day Jazz in the Pines festival held in August. Moore is a percussionist who plays a wide range of music that includes jazz, Latin, rock, and R&B. Duncan has worked as a studio musician and recorded jingles, soundtracks, and various projects. The concert starts 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 8. Tickets are $25, students and active military are free. Non-profit concert proceeds support music education for young musicians in the Coachella Valley. Music of the World
Husband and wife international piano duo, The Latsos, light up Palm Springs
T
he Coachella Valley Repertory Theatre (CVRep) in association with The Marquee Academy of Performing Arts is presenting a classical concert featuring the international piano duo, The Latsos. The entire program of music written by local composer, Joe Giarrusso representing music of America, France, and Italy. Giarrusso is not saying, but there will be a special surprise performance at the end of the evening. The performance will feature a “Meet the Artists reception, with refreshments, after the concert. The Latsos have been performing primarily in Europe and currently reside in Vienna, Austria, with their son, Luca. Husband (Giorgi Latso/Latsabidze) and wife (Anna Federova-Latso) are interna-
tional piano artists who met at a concert where Anna was soloist and Giorgi fell immediately in love. Seeing that there are not too many classical piano duo teams (and there is an abundance of music written by composers throughout history), they both decided to pursue a career of performing music for two-pianos as well as music for one piano, four hands. Of course, they still play solo, chamber and concerto repertoire throughout the world. The Latsos perform at 7 p.m. Friday, April 7 at the Marquee Academy of Performing Arts in Palm Springs, 441 South Palm Canyon Drive. Tickets can be purchased through the CVRep Box Office at 760-296-2966 or online at cvrep.org.

Expect the musical to do that locally at the Palm Canyon Theatre, whose production will focused on celebrating Fosse’s style. Choreographer and stage veteran Stephanie Eley delivers her expertise in this show via dancers from various studios across the valley and many College of the Desert students, too. Eley was in the original Broadway cast of “Dreamgirls” and “My One and Only,” and performed in the national and international tours of “A Chorus Line” from 1977-1980. A
ward-winning actress/singer Gloria Loring stars in the warmhearted and witty comedy/drama about Ann Landers as she prepares for her most important column in Coyote Stageworks’ “The Lady with All the Answers,” April 1423 at Palm Springs’ Annenberg Theater. Artistic Director Chuck Yates says, “Playwright/writer/ actor/producer David Rambo gives us a chance to get up close and personal with ‘Eppie’ Lederer, better known to the world as Ann Landers. “This folksy, funny and straightforward one-woman play is set in Eppie’s plush, traditionally furnished living room on a late night in 1975…Like many another journalist facing a deadline, she insists on exhausting all forms of procrastination before settling down to crank out her ‘most important column of my career.’ “Instead of rapping out those few momentous paragraphs, Eppie entertains the audience with cozy tales of her colorful history, interspersing these with readings of some of her favorite letters, including questions about nude housekeeping, sex in a motorcycle helmet, sibling rivalries, addiction, religion and wandering spouses.” Loring gained famed on the afternoon soap ”Days of Our Lives,” going on to successful cabaret concerts, stage work and recordings. Yates also notes that Loring “blew away audiences” with her award-winning performance in the Coyote Stageworks production of “Love, Loss and What I Wore.” Curtain Time: “The Lady with All the Answers,” starring Gloria Loring, April 1423, Coyote Stageworks, Annenberg Theater, Palm Springs Art Museum, 101 Museum Drive. This is the area’s only Forever 21 fashion presentation showcasing spring festival wear and plus sizes. “It’s very exciting for The River to be selected as the area’s only location for a fashion presentation by Forever 21 featuring their latest festival looks and plus sizes,” says Ungar Kung, principal at CL Asset Management, owners’ representative of The River. “This is a terrific way to kick-off a month of music festivals here in the Coachella Valley. Forever 21 is a valued tenant and a must-stop destination for teens, their families and friends.” The Forever 21 fashion presentation at The River will be curated by Palm Springs Life fashion editor and trend expert Susan Stein, who will also be responsible for creating the looks worn by the runway models and providing commentary during the show. Out of Her Shell Scarlett Johansson puts flesh on
live-action remake of ‘Ghost in the Shell’
By Neil Pond
T
he big “news” about “Ghost in the Shell,” though, is that it’s the long-awaited live-action remake of a groundbreaking, classic 1995 Japanese anime film of the same name. The original “Ghost in the Shell,” based on a series of popular Japanese “manga” comics, spawned a television series, several video spinoffs and a 2004 sequel that became the first animated film ever to compete for the grand prize at the Cannes Film Festival. Scarlett Johansson stars as Major, a sexy, futuristic fembot who’s basically a human brain with cyber body parts. She’s been salvaged from a horrific incident and recommissioned by a robotics corporation in cahoots with the government and the military. New Port City, the punk-goth future world in which the movie is set, has all sorts of people walking around with all sorts of no-big-deal cyber enhancements. But Major is touted as the first of her kind, a successfully transplanted human brain inside a 100 percent robotic casing—her “ghost” identity in a humanoid, hightech, super-duper “shell” of hydraulics, wires, circuitry, gridwork and tubing. Her motherly surgeon is thrilled, but the head of the robotics program is a bit more pragmatic and bottom-line: “She’s a weapon, and the future of my company.” So Major is assigned to a team of cyberwarfare operatives, and you can guess what happens next—a lot of run, run, bang, bang, boom, boom. Major’s mission is a bit murky—there’s someone out there named Kuze who’s got to be stopped before he…oh, whatever.
Some of the sequences are eye-popping, even gorgeous—like the geisha robot assassin that turns into a wall-crawling “spider,” and the stunning backgrounds that seem almost alive. The movie brings up issues of consciousness, artificial intelligence, memory, mutations and just how far corporations (or governments) could, should or would go into the lives of people who can’t stop them. If it seems kind of familiar, it’s because we’ve been there before in “Blade Runner,” “The Matrix,” “Robocop,” “Ex Machina,” “A.I.” and “Minority Report.” “Ghost in the Shell” gets in some nice, more subtle touches, however. In a movie full of far-out sights and explosive action, a quiet, subdued scene when Major goes to the apartment of a grieving mother is filled with understated sorrow—and loaded with deeper clues. A scene where Major gently engages a prostitute just to remember the feel of human flesh is heartbreaking. But overall, this Ghost seems a bit late in the game. It’s got a shiny, great-looking shell, but the ghost inside isn’t really anything new.
