“There are 30 different soil series across the Paso Robles AVA,” said Gary, who received his Enology degree at U.C. Davis following his college football heyday at Penn State under Joe Paterno. “That quality, combined with the long growing season, large diurnal swing, and different microclimates, affords us the ability to create a multitude of different wines that cannot be pigeonholed into one definable category.”

Mondavi’s Mentorship

EBERLE WINERY THE LEGACY CONTINUES EBERLE WINERY 1979-2019 CELEBRATING 40 YEARS OF FINE WINEMAKING

A Paso Robles ‘Legacy’ Gary Eberle was awarded the Robert Mondavi Hospitality Award. The distinction, established in 1999, recognizes pioneers in all aspects of the hospitality industry. The award carries with it special meaning for Eberle, as it shares company with its first honoree, Robert Mondavi. The accolade coincides with Eberle Winery’s 40th year and helped to kick off “Legacy,” a conglomeration of awards, seminars, wine tastings and dinners to celebrate Gary’s 46-year vision and tireless work in support of the Paso Robles wine industry. Libbie Agran, director of the San Luis Obispo Wine History Project, spotlighted Gary’s achievements at the celebration and announced other events, including museumquality installations and insightful, educational seminars. To commemorate Gary’s 40th year, 2019 will also feature “Legacy” Eberle Cabernet Sauvignon and a July 13 Gala at the winery. Among Eberle’s premier vintages are the Cotes-du-Robles

I’m so proud of him and his legacy.” In Gary’s economy, business is built on relationship. True to form, Gary can be found at the winery on any given day, immersed in cheerful conversation about the region in which he’s invested his life. “Paso Robles doesn’t have to play second fiddle to anyone,” Gary said, with a smile. “We can be really proud of what we make.” 1322 Park Street, Paso Robles, CA 93446 Tasting room open: Thur - Sat 1-8, Sun - Mon 1-5 805-369-1092 | www.HoytFamilyVineyards.com

Always a Team Effort In the 1970s, Gary not only established Estrella River Winery, the first commercial winery in Paso Robles, he was the first winemaker to create California’s first Syrah varietal wine. Together, Gary and winemakers Tom Meyer, Vic Roberts, and land developer-turned-grower Herman Schwartz combined their expertise to develop the Paso Robles AVA in 1982, and they debuted Paso’s first Wine Festival the following year. Visitors from all over who visit Eberle Winery who meet and chat with Gary not only learn a lot about wine, they leave pleasantly surprised to find the most accessible, gracious and unpretentious winemaker around. Gary’s hospitality is wellknown, and he freely gives away the credit to fellow vintners when talking about the wine Gary and Marcy Eberle appellation he helped develop.

Eberle Dinners and Celtic Travels At Eberle winery, elegant winemaker dinners, brunches and wedding receptions are often held inside the 16,000-square-foot wine caves and outside deck, which offers sweeping views of the Paso Robles countryside. Meanwhile, new plans are developing to create cozy cave alcoves that seat 10 to 20, along with a secondstory level to host VIP and Cellar Club members. Gary and Marcy often host fun-fueled ocean cruises. From September 13-20, 2020, they will pair wines with fabulous food prepared by Michelin three-star chef, Alain Ducasse. On Eberle’s eight-day Ponant cruise aboard the state-of-the-art French yacht, Le Jacques Cartier, guests will discover the beauty and mystery of Celtic culture on visits to Connemara, Galway, Donegal, Killybegs, Cornwall, Penzance, Stonehenge, and Saint Malo, Brittany. AWARDS

BRICK BARN WINE ESTATE New Kid on the Block Brick Barn Wine Estate, “the new kid on the block,” (opening spring of 2018), is making quite a splash in the local wine country community. Located on the CA246 (Buellton exit), about 1.5 miles west of the 101 freeway, Brick Barn sits on the westernmost fringe of the Santa Ynez Valley AVA. So, when exiting the freeway, ‘”Go West young man (or woman),” you will be pleased you did. The refurbished winery and tasting room is in the original, architecturally designed 50 year old “brick barn” which was once used as an Arabian stud farm and breeding facility. Walking up the path from the parking area to the entrance, you can’t help

but be impressed by the overall elegance of the building, the surrounding vineyards, and Sta. Rita hills that are part of the pastoral vista. Approaching the open door you will experience a “wow, this is beautiful” moment, looking into the tasting room with its impressive chandeliers, expansive bar and winery. After a friendly greeting, sample the initial release (already award winning), enjoy the ambience, personable staff and glimpse the future of what is becoming a destination winery.

From Snowboarder to Winemaker Rob DaFoe has had an interesting journey, leading him to be head winemaker at Brick Barn Wine Estate. “Back in the

day” (being the 1990’s), this Santa Barbara born native had a wanderlust about him, a need for exploration and adventure. Athletic, adventurous, and loving to “push the edge,” Rob found himself in the world of professional snowboarding way before snowboarding became a popular competitive and professional sport. Spending time on the European circuit, Rob became enthralled with the “lifestyle of wine,” and knew one day-this would be his calling. Fast forwarding, Rob returned to the United States, became involved in video production, and in 2006 produced a video, “From Ground to Glass” which premiered at the Santa Barbara Film Festival. The rest is (almost) history, as Rob morphed into a winemaking career, producing a single vineyard Cabernet, collaborating with Jeff Tanner (Tanner DaFoe label) and starting his own label, Rake. These successes led to his position as head winemaker for Brick Barn. Rob’s love of adventure and artistry translates into his vision of winemaking. Passion, mixed with romanticism, Rob refers to himself as a “winegrower,” taking and nurturing the grapes from the ground, so they may be enjoyed in your glass. Looking forward, Rob’s wine creations will be edgy, enticing, sophisticated, creative, full of energy, and will push boundaries in winemaking, just as he did on the slopes. How much fun is this going to be!

From The Beginning The earth is part of Niels Udsen’s being. His father, a successful farmer and businessman, immigrated to America in the late 1940’s, returning to visit his Native Denmark frequently with his son. It was on one of those trips that Niels (age eight) met Bimmer (who was six); that is when the story of Castoro Cellars truly began. Six years later, at the age of 14, on another visit to Denmark, Niels’ (future) father-in-law began to teach him how to make wine. Niels studied Agribusiness at Cal-Poly SLO, and trained in Italy. Returning to the Central Coast (Paso Robles), Niels worked at Estrella Vineyards Winery. Eventually he and Bimmer purchased property, launching their own brand in 1983. Niels and Bimmer loved the outdoors, respecting and being committed to preserving the earth. Their values and way of thinking became their guidepost and mission statement: “Sustainability, the act of incorporating environmental responsibility, social equity and economic viability in all aspects of the winemaking process….. ensuring future generations will enjoy the fruits of the land.” Castoro Cellars practices this philosophy in all aspects of their life: Farming, community involvement, charitable giving, family, fun and of course: DAM Fine Wine!

Come for the Wine – Return for Unequalled Experiences The first time visitors may come for the wine, but quickly discover there is much more to Castoro Cellars than just

12

sampling award winning wines. There is a feeling of tranquility, friendship, family – and a special “state of being” that comes over you once you relax, sip and experience some of the exceptional wines from grapes grown on the estate vineyards. You may also be treated to a glass of Castoro’s “bubbly,” learning this is one of the few Paso Robles wineries producing a California Champagne, using the traditional “méthode Champenoise.” Castoro is committed to always “go the extra mile” in everything they do to assure quality. You will find this is not only a winery with a great tasting room, but also a visionary – a trendsetter and innovator.

The New Family Dream When Niels trained in Italy decades ago, it was his dream to one day produce quality Italian style grappa. Now that dream has become a reality, with the opening of Bethel Rd. Distillery in January, 2019. The distillery is located just across the road from Castoro Cellars. Keeping the tradition of a family operation and looking to the future, Bethel Rd. Distillery is run by Max and Luke Udsen, Luke’s wife Lauren and Max’s girlfriend, Malina. Currently there are two Italian Grappas, two brandies and a gin being produced, and available for tasting. Visit this newest, exciting adventure, sip and feel the spirit, enjoy entertainment and a cool vibe in a beautiful setting, as the Udsen family continues to expand their, and your horizons.

Setting the Bar High From the beginning, whether it’s related to conservatorship of the land, producing the best wine possible, contributing to and being a viable part of the community or setting an example for the next generation, Niels and Bimmer Udsen have always set the bar high – for themselves, their family and the community. The Udsen’s are always striving to make everyone’s lives better and more fulfilling. Visit Castoro Cellars Vineyards & Winery for a DAM Fine Time and an experience that will touch and change you. Vineyard Cabins Hoyt Family Vineyards offer guests a Paso Robles countryside getaway on their property at 2110 Township Road. Constructed by Paso Robles brothers John and Ron Daniels, the project was featured on the pilot episode of the Cabin Brothers reality television show. Two charming cabins mix elements of both beach and countryside. Among nearby pistachio trees, the Vineyard View and Cowboy Cabin each offer barbecues, hot tubs, starlit nights, and sleep five to six people. Make your reservations by calling (805) 369-1092. Malibu Strong In Malibu, Hoyt Family Vineyards was established and thriving. Tragically, however, in the 2018 Woolsey Fire, their home front was literally consumed.

HOYT FAMILY VINEYARDS From trial-and-error beginnings, to creating award-winning wines, to withstanding a devastating fire, Hoyt Family Vineyards thrives as “the little engine that could.” “I’ve always liked to cook, experiment with food and blend flavors,” said winemaker Carol Hoyt, who owns Hoyt Family Vineyards with husband Stephen Hoyt. “While visiting Paso Robles, we fell in love with the cool little tasting rooms there and the romance of winemaking.” For Carol, that “romance” took the form of crushing a hundred pounds of Cabernet grapes in her Malibu kitchen. With a picture of a vineyard stuck to their wall as inspiration, Carol and Stephen nurtured their seedling of an idea into fruition. “At first, we didn’t know what we were doing,” laughed Carol. “We initially planted Malbec, Merlot and Chardonnay but soon learned that Chardonnay does much better in our area of Malibu, so we planted more vines and grafted the others to Chardonnay. People love this wine. We call it ‘the drink it all day Chardonnay.’” Aged in new French oak, Hoyt’s Malibu Estate-grown Chardonnay is taken through a maloactic conversion process

16

that lends a creamier, more buttery texture without sacrificing the aromas that Chard fans enjoy. In 2003, Carol knew she was soon to have her first crop. To gain experience of what to do with all the grapes that she and Stephen planted, that “romance” took the form of crushing a hundred pounds of Cabernet grapes in their Malibu kitchen to make Carol’s first wine. By 2004, the couple harvested yields from their Malibu Estate. Then came custom crushes that led to working with quality winemakers in Buellton, Santa Maria and Paso Robles.

From Malibu to Paso Robles Warmer weather grape varieties were added to the palette after the purchase of a vineyard on Paso Robles’ westside. The property is eight miles from the Hoyt’s Park Street tasting room, managed by Carol’s friend, Nancy. Together, they prepare long table dinners during the harvest season. A popular choice of guests is the 2013 Petite Sirah, a flirty wine that swirls deep like ink on the sides of the glass. Hoyt’s Cabernet-based blend, Dylema, was named after Carol and

Stephen’s children, Dylan and Emma. Originally created to pair with the Malibu Chili cookoff, Dylema has won Gold and Silver at the San Francisco Wine Competition. Hoyt Family Vineyard’s 2017 Pinot Noir Rosé won 99 points and secured Double Gold and Best of Class at the California State Fair. Another Best of Class winner by the San Francisco Wine Chronicle is Hoyt’s 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon, a fruit-forward red that is among Carol’s personal favorites. In 2012, Hoyt also won Microwinery of the Year. “Our tasting room is a place to chillax and talk. There’s no pretense here,” said Carol. “And we have fun. We’ll talk wine, have live music on Friday nights, or enjoy our wine with a little karaoke.” “The Paso tasting room used to be Corrigan’s Barber Shop,” said Carol. “We removed eight layers of linoleum to reveal beautiful wood flooring underneath. It is a bit crooked, so if things start looking level, you know you’ve had too much to drink.” Hoyt Family Vineyards Tasting Room is open Thursday– Saturday from 1-8 p.m., and Sunday–Monday. from 1-5 p.m. in Downtown Paso Robles. Wine Country This Month: Central Coast

The 97,000-acre inferno destroyed 1,500 structures, damaged 341 structures, injured three firefighters and killed three people. Within the 45,000-acre Malibu Coast wine producing region, the wildfire effectively crippled the wine industry and vines that receive years of tending. Ironically, vineyards also serve as firebreaks that can protect adjacent properties and help prevent erosion, particularly on hillsides. “We lost our house,” said Carol matter-of-factly, “but we’re moving forward to rebuild and replant.” The very optimism that helped conceive Carol and Stephen Hoyt’s Malibu vineyard not only sustains them in adversity, it is what makes their guests feel right at home in Paso Robles.

SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY

More than 200 wineries produce critically acclaimed vintages in Paso Robles, Edna Valley and Arroyo Grande Valley. Visitors can head out along the gorgeous country roads to sip their way through the vineyards.

San Luis Obispo’s unusual natural beauty, along with its gentle climate, first attracted the Spanish padres to the area in the 1700s. In 1772, they built the fifth of California’s 21 missions Too Paso Pas aso Robles Ro s (26 m mi miles )

here, on the banks of San Luis Creek, and named it Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa. Today, many consider this the most beautiful of the Spanish missions.

t’s no wonder the people here call it SLO. No one is in any hurry in the cafes or on the sidewalks, and certainly no one is in any rush to leave. Strangers are genuinely friendly, always ready to talk about their favorite hiking trail or barbecue joint, or to point the way to the winery with the best Pinot Noir. It’s all part of the SLO life, that combination of good stuff that makes visiting here so nourishing to the soul.

Tickets for Paso Robles Wine Country’s marquee events are now on sale at www.pasowine.com. The annual celebration of Paso’s heritage variety, Vintage Paso: Zinfandel Weekend is scheduled for March 15-17. Paso Robles’ signature wine event, the Paso Robles Wine Festival celebrates its 37th year on May 16-19. Now is the time to plan, for Paso Wine, in 2019. Vintage Paso: Zinfandel Weekend begins on Friday, March 15 with Zinposium, a Zin-focused seminar in downtown Paso Robles at the Paso Robles Inn Ballroom. Moderated by iconic winemaker, Neil Collins, owner and winemaker of Lone Madrone, a panel of winemakers will discuss dry farming Zinfandel and Zin blended wines. This seated tasting is guaranteed to be educational and entertaining. In the evening, the ballroom transforms into a lounge atmosphere for Z After Party. Join up to 20 Paso wineries for a savory walk-around Zinfandel tasting, complemented by a fantastic selection of desserts and live jazz. This intimate tasting is sure to sell out with 80 seats for Zinposium and 175 tickets for Z After Party. Advance purchase only. Zinfandel Weekend continues on Saturday, March 16 and Sunday, March 17 with more than 100 wineries holding their own individual events throughout Paso Robles Wine Country. Visit www.pasowine.com to search by winery, activity or day to plot a course for Zin. The Paso Robles Wine Festival returns May 16-19 with the 37th annual celebration of everything Paso Robles wine. Wine Fest kicks-off Thursday, May 16 with Winemaker Dinners, each featuring multiple winemakers at the table with their wines paired with the cuisine of two iconic Paso Robles restaurants, Thomas Hill Organics and The Hatch. On Friday, May 17, RESERVE delights a limited gathering of wine and food lovers with Library, Reserve, White/Rosé, and Barrel Sample wines, complemented by fresh and local gourmet bites. The following day, Saturday, May 18, begins with a Winemaker Seminar. The topic is under wraps for now but promises to be a fun discussion and tasting. The day culminates with the Wine Festival Grand Tasting in the Paso Robles Downtown City Park. This unique outdoor tasting features 70+ wineries arranged by “regions” (Bordeaux-style, Rhône-style, Zinfandel, Burgundianstyle, Italian varieties, and Other Wild Wines) with wineries pouring their best. In the picnic area and gazebo, live music will provide the perfect atmosphere to enjoy a beautiful summer day sipping Paso Robles wines. Back by popular demand, the 2019 Wine Festival will feature complimentary food tasting from the region’s best chefs and caterers. Visit www.pasowine.com often to see updates on who will be sampling their delicious creations. Creativity abounds with the return of a limited lineup of handpicked artisan merchants. These entrepreneurs will offer a selection of unique local and wine country themed products. Sunday, May 19 of Wine Festival weekend encourages people to travel beyond the Park to explore more than 100 winery events throughout the weekend including winemaker dinners, live music, barrel samples, and so much more! RIVE

LA

Located near the coastal town of San Simeon, the Riboli family’s estate vineyards are focused within the renowned Paso Robles appellation. Steep hillsides and ideal soils produce grapes with concentrated flavors and aromas. The Sauvignon Blanc and Grenache thrive in the unique climate of Paso Robles with warm days and cool nights. During 2018, the weather was ideal with a long growing season that provided great “hang time” for the grapes. Winemakers Anthony Riboli and Arnaud Debons employ traditional techniques in their careful crafting of these fine wines. Both the San Simeon Sauvignon Blanc and the Grenache Rosé were fermented in stainless steel tanks at 55°F for several weeks. This long, cold fermentation preserves the delicate flavors and aromas of these varieties.

2018 San Simeon Sauvignon Blanc was recently awarded 93 points by Tastings.com. It is a bright, refreshing wine with intense flavors of citrus and pear. The nose reveals bright aromas SEE C ANYO N RD of white peach and lime zest. Mineral notes express the rocky terroir of the vineyard. This structured and well-balanced wine shows a lengthy finish. Enjoy with grilled swordfish and basil pesto linguine. The San Simeon 2018 Grenache Rosé is grown specifically to be made into Rosé and is handcrafted in small lots. Grenache grapes are harvested and gently crushed. The skins and juice remain in contact for several hours resulting in a lovely salmon-pink color. Ripe red berry, cantaloupe and rose petal notes pair well with tuna tartare, prosciutto and melon, and a wide array of appetizers. “Our passion for winemaking and providing people with the best hospitality and service has been our mission for over 100 years,” said fourth generation winemaker Anthony Riboli, “and we hope to continue to create memories for years to come.” The Riboli Family of San Antonio Winery tasting room is conveniently located just off Highway 46 East at 2610 Buena Vista Drive in Paso Robles and is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The bistro serves a delicious selection of appetizers, pastas, pizza, sandwiches and more from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. There is also a gift shop where you can find unique gifts for yourself or your favorite wine lover! Stop in to discover why Riboli Family of San Antonio Winery was recently named American Winery of the Year by Wine Enthusiast. For more information call (805) 226-2600.

ZACA MESA

WINERY & VINEYARDS SINCE 1972, WRITING SANTA BARBARA COUNTY WINE HISTORY A family-owned and operated estate property with historic roots in Santa Barbara’s wine country, Zaca Mesa Winery & Vineyards has proudly produced hand-crafted wines since 1973. As only the third winery in the area, they helped pioneer the Santa Barbara Rhône movement and paved the way for future winemakers. With 45 years of history, Zaca Mesa became the training ground for many of the area’s great winemakers. Names like Ken Brown (Zaca Mesa’s first winemaker), Jim Clendenon, Bob Lindquist and Daniel Gehrs, all got their start at Zaca Mesa, continuing to begin their own labels, and grow the reputation of the Santa Ynez Valley wine industry.

Looking to the Past to Define the Future

Zaca Mesa’s Tasting Room is located in the original 1978 barn, surrounded by a beautiful pastoral setting. As you sample award winning wines, your host will impart some of the history of Zaca Mesa, the area and the changes that have occurred over the years. In the beginning, Zaca Mesa originally planted common varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Riesling and Pinot Noir. As one of the first wineries in the area, it took years to conclude that this micro-climate was most adaptable to growing Rhône varietals. Since 1997, Zaca Mesa has focused exclusively on producing exceptional Rhône wines. Included in their production is a very special Syrah: the Black Bear Block Syrah. Originally planted in 1978, the Black Bear Block is the oldest block of Syrah on the Central Coast. When visiting Zaca Mesa, sit back and enjoy your tasting, or if inclined, delve deeper into the history of the wines and winemaking process. The winery offers a variety of fun and interactive learning opportunities, including winery and vineyard tours.

Throughout its history, Zaca Mesa has always pushed the envelope and experimented in order to produce exciting wines. Kristin Bryden, Winemaker since 2016, is continuing the tradition of looking to the past to create future award-winning wines. Breaking away from some of the more traditional winemaking techniques, Kristin is using different vessels such as concrete tanks, clay amphorae (which date to ancient Greek and Roman times) and neutral oak barrels, in order to highlight the true character of the grape. The new GSM blend, Inceptive, uses a distinct blend of concrete and neutral oak aging, showcasing intense purity of fruit with elegant balance. This wine has already received 93 points from Wine Enthusiast Magazine. You may say this is the “new Zaca Mesa,” reinventing themselves and setting the trend for the future. Zaca Mesa is a destination winery. It is the history of the Santa Ynez Valley wine industry, the past, the present and the future. You will find the grounds and winery a perfect place to relax with a fine glass of wine and picnic, while visiting a historical setting. >> DON SONDERLING

Santa Maria Costa de Oro Tasting Room Costa de Oro Tasting Room is located right off of Highway 101 in Santa Maria. This site pays tribute to the history behind Costa De Oro — it was the strawberry stand for Gold Coast Farms, the parent company of Costa De Oro, which has been farming Santa Maria since 1978. Gold Coast Vineyard was planted to 20 acres of Pinot Noir and 10 acres of Chardonnay in 1989, and these grapes were sold to the area’s best wineries — including Au Bon Climat. Gary Burk, Costa de Oro co-owner and winemaker, was fortunate to work in the winery with Jim Clendenen from 1994-2002, and during this time he began to make his own wine. Gary started with just one barrel of Chardonnay and one barrel of Pinot Noir. Today, Costa de Oro produces more than 6000 cases featuring Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from the estate — Gold Coast Vineyard. At the 2017 Central Coast Wine Competition their Estate Chardonnay won “Best of Show” and their Estate Pinot Noir received a “Gold Medal.” The best place to experience the wines is at the tasting room, where guests can taste five wines for only $10.

Live Music In addition to their regular tasting room hours (normally 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily), they have music three nights a week...Thursday

5-7 p.m. (Classical), Friday evening, “Friday Night Wine Downs” featuring live music from local musicians & $12 food plates available. Then on Saturdays they have acoustic music 3 to 5 p.m.

Kegs Another facet to the Costa de Oro portfolio is their “Wine on Tap.” Kegged wine, wine stored and shipped inside five gallon kegs instead of bottles, has been gaining popularity throughout the past several years. Costa de Oro started kegging wine for high-end accounts, like Roy’s Hawaii. Now these wines, a white and a red, are available in the tasting room by the glass and by the growler (these can be refilled). Costa de Oro wine club members receive discounts on keg wines, bottled wines and merchandise. To Sa San Luis Obispo (32 miles )

Los Olivos Small Town Charm Where History is Alive Reminiscent of a Norman Rockwell painting, Los Olivos is a step back in time, with its flagpole in the city center, to the vintage store fronts that beckon you to have a seat and enjoy the scenery. Dating back to 1860, when it was a stop on the western stagecoach route, the town is full of history from its Victorian homes to the many locals with pioneer ancestors. Now a hub for visitors to the county, Los Olivos has a variety of local restaurants, which complement the wine country experience, with their acclaimed wine lists paired with seasonal menus. Encompassing just five blocks, the downtown is very pedestrian friendly, filled with wine tasting rooms intermingled with craft brew tasting, art galleries and boutiques filled with home décor, gifts and apparel. Pack a picnic and head out for the day to the Foxen Canyon Wine Trail! Start your journey at Zaca Station Road, just off of Highway 101 as you head toward Los Alamos on Highway 154. With close to a dozen wineries on the trail, you can leisurely meander throughout the country roads as they wind through an idyllic setting of vineyards, pastures and farm animals. You’ve definitely come to the right place to indulge in the perfect SAN MAR COS PASS RD afternoon of wine tasting! 154

Don’t be put off by the petite, under 200 square foot tasting room, where you will sample some of the most esteemed wines in the area. In fact, Robert Parker has referred to the Larner (Ballard Canyon) Vineyard as a “Californian Grand Cru” that ultimately leads to world-class wines. Michael Larner is a true craftsman, specializing in Rhone varietals. However, also grown on the property is an Italian varietal, Malvasia Bianca, which has a special meaning to Michael. But, to get that story, you’ll have to visit the tasting room, and while you are entranced by this enticing wine, you may find out why it is so special to Michael.
