lassic car admirers can start revving up their proverbial engines in anticipation of McCormick’s Rare Auction #74, where, once again, nearly 400 featured vehicles will cross the auction block. Attendees will see roadsters, convertibles, muscle cars, trucks, wagons and more. Prizes up for acquisition will include a 1987 Rolls Royce Corniche, a 1960 Ford Thunderbird, a 1959 Austin Healey 100 6, a 1936 Packard 1400 Touring Sedan and dozens of others that are sure to attract attention from bidders. Vehicles from the last auction included a 1959 Volkswagen Beetle which sold for $24,380, a 1976 Cadillac Eldorado
convertible for $15,476, a 1928 Ford Roadster pickup for $19,928 and even a 1930 Ford Model A for $24,645. Opening day Friday is free and open to the public with complimentary champagne happy hour at 11 a.m., and on Sunday guests can sip free mimosas and bloody marys from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. For a preview of some of the most impressive vintage autos in the country, guests are invited to stop by McCormick’s year-round show room at 244 N. Indian Canyon Drive in Palm Springs. The auction takes place February 24-26 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Palm Springs Convention Center located at 277 N. Avenida Caballeros, Palm Springs.
Fascinating facts about Strawberries • Biologically speaking, strawberries belong to the Rosaceae family and the subfamily Rosoideae, which also includes roses. Plants that belong to the Rosoideae subfamily have at least two pistils that are not connected and develop into achenes, a feature that roses and strawberries share. • In addition to red, strawberries can be white, pink, yellow, and golden-hued. These varieties are created by crossing wild strawberries and saving the seeds from the different hued plants. • Ancient Romans believed strawberries help alleviate various ailments, including melancholy, fainting, inflammation, and fevers. This is perhaps due to
to the fact that strawberries contain a high amount of vitamin C. • You might think that an orange has the most vitamin C out of any fruit, but strawberries actually contain more. One large sweet red berry contains 10.5 mg, compared to 70 mg of vitamin C in an orange. • Strawberries are one of the first fruits to ripen in the spring. Their harvest season also is pretty short, clocking in at just about three weeks, so it’s important to harvest them early and quickly. • 10 million baskets of strawberries are shipped daily during harvest time in California.

Ron Coronado Shares ‘Confessions of a Character Actor’ Local character actor, Ron Coronado, will bring his one-man show Confessions of a Character Actor to Palm Canyon Theatre on March 1 for one night only. Through song, stories, and visuals, Coronado will share secrets of the stage during a night that promises to enlighten your soul, touch your heart, and make you laugh. Coronado has performed throughout the country on stage, television and in film. He is known to completely embody his characters and transform himself to the point where he is unrecognizable, even to those who know him well. As an actor who loves the process of character development and research, Coronado is excited to share stories of his journey that started in Michigan
at age 12 and led to performances in Los Angeles, New York, and now Palm Springs. Best known locally for his performances in Priscilla Queen of the Desert (Bernadette Bassenger), Hairspray (Edna Turnblad), La Cage Aux Folles (Jacob), and The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (Melvin P. Thorpe), Coronado shares his memories of becoming these characters. Through laughs (and maybe some tears), Coronado opens up about how these characters spoke through him and how they remain a part of him, even after the curtain closes. “I’ve always considered myself a storyteller, and I’m excited to share what it takes to develop the character and everything else that leads up to opening night,” said Coronado.
During Coronado’s confessions, he also plans to reveal some “theatre magic!” How is it created? What goes into making a witch fly over the audience? And how do they make a Hollywood mansion levitate on stage? How did they fly a helicopter on stage? The theatre is where “seeing is believing,” but what you see is not always “reality.” Coronado plans to answer the question asked by so many theatre patrons, “How did they do that?” Confessions of a Character Actor begins at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 1. After preparing my own taxes annually for over 40 years, I’m about to have someone else do them for me for the first time. This is not without concerns, of course, but the people who volunteer to prepare taxes at the senior center are trained. They’re part of the AARP income tax assistance program, which means they’re IRS-certified and therefore will know about any recent changes to tax law ... which will be handy at this point. As of this writing, the IRS is telling people to hold off sending in their tax returns for 2022. The reason: So many states handed out so many types of money during the pandemic that the IRS isn’t sure yet what is and isn’t taxable. For example, checks designated as “rebates” might or might not

be taxable. A Covid disaster emergency relief check is not. However, in some cases, the issue is complicated by whether you do or do not itemize. People in at least 22 states are caught in this dilemma. If you haven’t done your taxes yet and want help, or if you want to make a note for next year, do an online search for “AARP Foundation Tax-Aide Locator.” Once on the site, scroll down and enter your ZIP code or town in the search field to find the locations near you. Be sure to ask about the forms you’ll need to pick up and fill out before your appointment, and whether you’ll be going inside or waiting in the parking lot. The other good news is that this AARP service is free. For me it means I don’t need to spend $50 once again to buy the computer software and do it myself and hope I haven’t made an error somewhere ... perhaps with guessing wrong about whether that state check I received is or isn’t taxable.

Creamy strawberry french toast bake Ingredients • 3 cups sliced fresh strawberries, divided • 2 tablespoons sugar • 1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese, softened • 1/2 cup confectioners’ sugar • 1 tablespoon grated orange zest • 1tablespoon orange juice • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1 loaf (1 pound) cinnamon bread, cut into 1-in. pieces • 5 large eggs • 1 cup half-and-half cream • Sweetened whipped cream Directions 1. Toss 2 cups strawberries with sugar. In another bowl, beat the next 5 ingredients until smooth. Place half the bread in a greased 13x9-in. baking dish. Spoon cream cheese mixture over bread. Layer with
strawberry mixture and remaining bread. Whisk eggs and cream until blended; pour over top. Refrigerate, covered, overnight. 2. Preheat oven to 350°. Remove casserole from refrigerator while oven heats. Bake, uncovered, until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean, 40-45 minutes. Let stand 5 minutes before serving. Top with whipped cream and remaining 1 cup strawberries.

A funny lady with a funny story Diana Shulman, also known as D’yan Forest, is a multi-talented performer; she sings and plays several musical instruments. But, says the Association of Mature American Citizens, the Guinness Book of Records picked her for being the world’s oldest professional comedienne. At the age of 88, she’s been at it for more than 20 years. When is she going to retire? As she put it in a recent TV appearance, “it ain’t over until the fat lady is dead.” Woodpeckers love acorns Exterminators were called in when the owners of a home in Sonoma County, CA started seeing maggots and mealworms coming out of a
www.DesertMobileHomeNews.com bedroom wall. At first the pest control technician assumed that a small animal may have found its way into the wall. But he discovered that woodpeckers had been poking holes in the home’s chimney stack to stash acorns. So, he went back inside and cut a hole in the wall and, sure enough, out came a lot of acorns-- an estimated 700 pounds of acorns. He figured the pesky woodpeckers had been at it for several years. It was a horse, of course Donna Bevan made a double take when she pulled up into a drive-thru lane of a MacDonald’s in New South Wales, Australia recently. There sitting in the back seat of a car in the next lane was a horse. Donna wasted no time saving the encounter on video-- including a brief conversation with a passenger in the car who explained that the horse was excited because he knew he was going to have his ice cream.
