‘Escape to Margaritaville’

By Crystal Harrell

• Believe it or not, cows can be potty trained -- and, it is said, with less trouble than toddlers. It’s called MooLoo training, and involves not a toilet, but a special pen with artificial grass. But why bother? The practice helps the environment by reducing air and water pollution and even planet warming. • The J.W. Westcott II is a boat that delivers mail to ships at sea. Operating out of Detroit, it’s the only floating zip code in America. • In 1931, German engineer Richter Raketenrad built a bike with 12 rockets mounted to its back wheel and reached a speed of 90 kph before his invention exploded and threw him off. While that was, sadly, the end of the rocket bike, Raketenrad himself suffered only a few scrapes. • Kintsugi is the Japanese art of putting broken pottery pieces back together with gold. • For over a year in the mid-2000s, members of the group Untergunther broke into the French Pantheon to repair a clock that had been broken for four decades. They later received court time for the effort but were somewhat vindicated when member Jean-Baptiste Viot, a clock restorer, was hired to repair it in 2018 after further neglect. esert TheatreWorks will be presenting an upbeat and energetic new show featuring the audience’s favorite Jimmy Buffett classics including “Volcano,” “Fins,” “Cheeseburger in Paradise,” and of course “Margaritaville.” With a tropical island theme, “Escape to Margaritaville” is a heartwarming musical and the party you’ve been waiting for at the Indio Performing Arts Center. “If you’re looking for an escape, look no further than DTW’s “Escape to Margaritaville.” The combination of Jimmy Buffett’s music and insanely talented cast of singers/dancers is the perfect recipe for the party show of the season! If you’re searching for your lost shaker of salt or dreaming of a cheeseburger in paradise, you’ll find it in this fun-filled talent-packed musical,” said Rebecca McWilliams, Director of “Escape to Margaritaville.” Desert TheatreWorks is pleased to announce that singer/songwriter Steve Knill will be starring as Tully in DTW’s production of “Escape to Margaritaville” this Spring. Steve most recently appeared on Kelly Clarkson’s team on season 17 of NBC’s “The Voice.” He has always wanted to expand his horizons and explore musical theatre, but wasn’t sure if there was a place for him in this genre. When Steve heard about the opportunity to appear in a musical featuring the music of singer/songwriter Jimmy Buffett, he felt he’d found his place.

1. FOOD & DRINK: Which U.S. city is known for its square pizzas with crunchy corners? 2. TELEVISION: Which character became a fugitive in the final season of “The Office”? “Desert TheatreWorks is extremely honored to be one of the few small theaters in America to be granted theatrical rights for Jimmy Buffett’s “Escape to Margaritaville.” And not only is this show infectiously fun, but it’s filled with so many of Mr. Buffett’s signature tunes. Audiences can expect a tropical party from the moment they enter the theater. All attendees are asked to wear their tropical best. The show features a live band (including a steel drum) and stars Steve Knill from NBC’s The Voice Season 17 leading a wonderfully talented cast. This is a must-see theatrical event!” shared Lance Phillips, artistic director of “Escape to Margaritaville.” The show is held March 10-31, Thursday-Sunday at the Indio Performing Arts Center, 45175 Fargo Street, Indio. Tickets $40 general admission, $38 seniors and students. Visit dtworks.org for tickets and curtain times.

Fascinating facts about daylight saving time • It wasn’t implemented for farmers In fact, the agricultural industry lobbied against daylight saving time after it was introduced in the United States. Many farmers continue to oppose the practice, which can disrupt farmwork. For example, dairy cows expect to be milked at the same hour each day — regardless of what the clock says. • Germany was the first country to implement daylight saving time Germany implemented daylight saving time in 1916 to save fuel during World War I. The United States adopted the

practice in 1918, but daylight saving time wasn’t standardized across the country until the passage of the 1966 Uniform Time Act, which gave the federal government oversight over the time change • It has an impact on your health Losing an hour of sleep each March can take a serious toll on your well-being. The shift to daylight saving time has been linked to an uptick in heart attacks, strokes, traffic fatalities and workplace injuries — and some sleep experts have called for an end to springing forward altogether.

‘Kafka’s Joke’ at Desert Ensemble Theatre Desert Ensemble Theatre presents the World Premiere of the West Coast Original play “Kafka’s Joke,” by Rich Rubin. The place is Prague in 1924. On his deathbed, 40-year-old Franz Kafka begs his best friend, Max Brod, to burn all his unpublished manuscripts. Brod, however, thinks his friend is an unappreciative genius and

refuses to carry out Kafka’s wishes. Despite Kafka’s lack of interest in his works, Brod makes it his life’s work to raise the world’s estimation of the writer. “Kafka’s Joke” by Rich Rubin: 7:30 p.m. Friday-Saturday; 2 p.m. Sunday, March 10-12 & 17-19. Talk about your tongue twisters It’s official: Nick Stoeberl who hails from Salinas, CA has the longest tongue of any man on earth. The folks at the Guinness World Records confirm that it measures nearly four inches -- 3.97 inches from teeth to tip, to be precise, and he uses it to paint pictures. His paintings have sold for as much as $1,200 and have earned him the nickname, Likasso.

A sad keepsake So, how did a Polaroid photo of President John F. Kennedy on the day of his assassination wind up in the Souls Harbor Thrift Store in Ferris, TX? George Rebele, who hails from Ferris, mysteriously found it when he opened a CD case containing a cassette he had purchased. It’s a mystery that is not likely to be resolved anytime soon. JFK historian Farris Rookstool says the photo appears to have been taken as President Kennedy’s motorcade was traveling from Love Field to downtown Dallas that sad day -- November 22, 1963.

One life event we don’t want to think about having to do for a loved one is planning a funeral. But sometimes we must, and it can be stressful and loaded with the potential to be scammed in some way. A small amount of help is coming. The Federal Trade Commission wants online funeral pricing. And it makes sense. When you need to organize a funeral, emotions are running high. You won’t be at your best when it comes to thinking about pricing and services. Back in 1984, the FTC created the Funeral Rule, but it only requires funeral homes to show lists of the prices of caskets and any outer burial containers, such as a grave liner. And it was only required that a potential customer be given those prices in person, certainly not by phone. To make it worse, funeral homes

only had to show pictures or the item itself after the prices were disclosed. By then, of course, you were at the funeral home, unhappy and sad and stressed. The last thing you wanted to do is treat it like a car purchase and shop around. So you signed the paperwork on the spot, possibly paid too much and maybe didn’t get the items and services you wanted. There are a few ways to ensure that your vulnerability at that time isn’t exploited. Before you leave the house to organize a funeral, go online to check local funeral home websites. They might be among the very few to actually post pricing and services. Take someone with you. Get the price list (in writing) of what the funeral home offers. Before you sign any paperwork, contact the Funeral Consumers Alliance (funerals.org) and get their advice. There’s a group in every state. On their website, click on “Consumers” and scroll down to “Don’t Know Where To Begin? Start Here.” Remember: Take your time.

into 3 or 4 pieces (they don’t have to be even). Add to the boiling water and cook, stirring frequently to prevent sticking, until tender, 8 to 10 minutes. Reserve 1 cup cooking water and then drain. 4. Add the butter and parmesan to the sauce and stir until it’s all combined and melted. Throw in the cooked lasagna noodles and ½ cup of the reserved cooking water; stir to combine, adding the rest of the reserved cooking water as needed so the noodles are well coated and a bit saucy. Add the mozzarella and stir until softened but not fully melted. 5. Remove the skillet from the heat and dollop the ricotta all over the top. Sprinkle with basil leaves.

The history of St. Patrick his life, known as “Confessio” and “Epistola.” In “Confessio,” Patrick responds to the fact that he was on trial for mysterious reasons, although he never names the crimes for which he was accused. Historians surmise that he took bribes because Patrick mentions returning or paying for gifts given to him.

St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated each year on March 17. St. Patrick was a larger-than-life figure who has been ingrained in Irish culture and was the catalyst for a holiday celebration that now stretches around the world. Much of what is shared about St. Patrick is based on folklore and exaggerated storytelling, according to historians. Snakes famously banished from Ireland? Snakes have never existed on the island to even be banished! Getting to the truth of St. Patrick the man takes a little digging through the fanciful tales. St. Patrick wasn’t Irish St. Patrick was born to a wealthy family in modern-day Great Britain near the end of the fourth century. There is no evidence that Patrick came from a particularly religious family, and History.com says it was likely Patrick’s father became a Christian deacon because of tax incentives and not religious devotion. Patrick only arrived in Ireland after being taken prisoner by a group of Irish raiders who attacked his family’s estate. He spent ages 16 to 22 in captivity and was likely held in County Mayo. Finding religion Patrick spent many hours working outdoors as a shepherd during his imprisonment. Being afraid and likely lonely, he found comfort in his religion and became a devout Christian. As Ireland was largely pagan at this time, he began dreaming of converting the Irish people

What is a stout?

St. Patrick didn’t introduce Christianity Although Patrick played the most influential role in spreading Christianity to Ireland, he wasn’t the first to do so. However, he did organize the followers who already existed and converted kingdoms which were still pagan. St. Patrick also connected Ireland with the Church of the Roman Empire.

to Christianity. Even though Patrick escaped imprisonment, believing it was the voice of God telling him it was time to leave, once he returned to Britain, he had a second revelation that he should return to Ireland as a missionary. It was then his religious training began, and it lasted more than 15 years. Eventually Patrick was ordained a priest and began ministering to Christians already living in Ireland and converting others. St. Patrick wrote an autobiography Much of what is known about St. Patrick comes from two works that he wrote about

St. Patrick helped the shamrock become a symbol of Irish nationalism The shamrock, also known as a three-leaf clover, and formerly the “seamroy” by the Celts, was a sacred plant that symbolized spring. St. Patrick, according to legend, used this familiar plant as a visual guide to explain the Holy Trinity of Christianity. By the 17th century, the shamrock had become a symbol of emerging Irish nationalism, according to History.com. St. Patrick is well known in Ireland and elsewhere in part because of the legends about his days on earth. The true history sheds even more light on the man behind the legend.

Stout is one type of beer that has an extensive following, and is frequently consumed on St. Patrick’s Day and at Irish pubs. Stout is described as a dark style beer. Stouts are typically rich and dark in color. Their flavor is described as coffee-like or chocolately. Stouts have a distinctive smooth, creamy texture that differs from most other beers. Stout was first documented in the 17th century and was a term used to describe a very strong beer. Dark beers called porters were very popular at the time and brewers began experimenting with porters of different strengths. Those containing roughly seven or eight percent alcohol by volume, among the strongest porters, were known as stout porters. However, it would take quite a while for these porters to be known only as stouts. Even one of the world’s most recognizable stouts, Guinness, was once called a porter. Stouts are distinguishable from porters in their ingredients. Porters use roast malted barley, according to Renegade Brewing. Stouts are made from black patent malt. Stouts are further classified into “milk” or “dry” stouts. Milk stout is a stout sweetened with lactose. Dry stouts are more bitter. Stouts also may be named as chocolate stout, oyster stout or oatmeal stout, depending on the ingredients used in the brewing process. Stouts are dark, rich and potent beers. Many people toast with stouts on St. Patrick’s Day.
