Fascinating facts about Nursing
• The first nursing school dates back as far as 250 B.C.E. in India and consisted of only men. Today, nursing is one of the fastest growing professional fields in the U.S. and women comprise nearly 90 percent of the demographic.
• One of the most famous nurses was a British woman, Florence Nightingale. Her duties as a nurse during the Crimean War saved many soldiers’ lives. Nightingale changed the way hospitals were sanitized, how food was prepared and served and how to treat wounded patients to prevent the spread of infection.
• Opened in 1873, New York City’s Bellevue Hospital School of Nursing offered a one-year program based on the teachings of Florence Nightingale. Shortly
after Bellevue opened, the New England Hospital for Women and Massachusetts General Hospital opened nursing schools of their own.
• The iconic nursing cap and early nursing uniforms were modeled after a nun’s habit, as a way to pay homage to the role nuns played in caring for the sick before professionalized nursing was reformed.
• Today, the total number of professional nurses in the U.S. is almost equal to the entire population of Los Angeles—nearly 4 million—and nearly 90 percent are women.
• On average, nurses walk nearly four to five miles every 12-hour shift, double the distance of most other professions.

Palm Canyon Theatre presents ‘She Loves Me’
Considered by many to be the most charming musical ever written, “She Loves Me” is a warm romantic comedy with an endearing innocence and a touch of oldworld elegance.
Amalia and Georg, shop clerks in a 1930s European perfumery, don’t see eye to eye. After they each respond to a “lonely hearts advertisement” in the newspaper, they now live for the love letters they exchange, although their admirers remain unknown. When Amalia and Georg discover the identity of their true loves, the twists and turns begin! This love story inspired the hit ‘90s romantic comedy movie “You’ve Got Mail.”
PCT’s production stars Se Layne (Amalia Balash) and Ben Reece (Georg Nowak).
Also in the cast are Neil Badham, Demetria Clemons, Jackson Enzler, Adam Hieter, Denise Rooney, Sheldon Safir, Eric Stein-Steele, Lisa Walters, Tom Warrick, Nick Wass and Sanai Wright. The show is directed by Derik Shopinski with set and lighting design by JW Layne and projections by Nick Edwards.
“She Loves Me” runs May 5-14. Show times are 7 p.m. on Thursdays, 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and 2 p.m. on Sundays. Tickets are $38 for adults; $34 for seniors; $17 for students.
For tickets and info, call the PCT Box Office at 760-323-5123 or order online at palmcanyontheatre.org. Palm Canyon Theatre is located at 538 North Palm Canyon Drive.
The sky’s the limit for these seniors It was a sight to behold at Skydive Perris in Orange County California when 101 freefalling 60-year-old senior citizens jumped from five airplanes in a record-breaking snowflake formation. The next day 95 of them broke another record when they leaped from their planes in a “sequential” formation. The organizers of these events are seeking recognition from the Guinness Book of World Records for these daring old men.
Arnold is back The former “Governator” of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, is still ready to do what is needed to serve the state’s citizens. Most recently, the actor-turned-politician took it upon himself to roll up his sleeves, grab a shovel and fill in a pothole on a road near his home in Los Angeles. And it was all caught on film. As he put it in a Twitter post, “Today, after the whole neighborhood has been upset about this giant pothole that’s been screwing up cars and bicycles for weeks, I went out with my team and fixed it. I always say, let’s not complain, let’s do something about it. Here you go.”
The Heavy Lifting of Pet Ownership
For seniors, there are several questions that arise when we consider whether we should adopt another pet after the death of a long-loved companion. There’s the scary thought of potential veterinary bills or whether we should own a dog that needs to be walked every day. Or maybe we think of adopting a young cat who will likely outlive us or an elderly cat who probably won’t.
I firmly believe, however, that when it comes to deciding about adopting a pet that the biggest potential problem comes down to heavy lifting.
The rule of four, I call it: There are four likely scenarios wherein, without intervention or assistance, heavy lifting is required.
For the economical 40-pound bag of dog chow, I would need to lift it into the shopping cart, put it on the conveyor belt at checkout, get it into the car and once home, get it into the house. That’s four liftings. This applies to even the 20-pound
jug of cat litter. I do the math: 4 times 20 equals 80 pounds I’d be lifting without interventions.
Interventions can take the shape of a strong teenage boy angel who happens to walk by in the pet supplies aisle; a store clerk who gets down cat litter from a very high shelf; checkouts with a radar gun on a stretchy cord that will reach to the cart to scan the bar code; and big neighbors who happen to be strolling by just as I’m pulling in my driveway.
Without luck, however, there have been too many times when all four liftings have been required. I suffer the next day.
I have decided to cut my pet-related lifting down to none. I have signed up for home delivery at two stores, never mind the expense. It’s worth every penny to see other people walk up my driveway carrying the heavy items, fully appreciative of the fact that I don’t have to do any lifting whatsoever.

• My dogs stay outside most of the day now, while the weather is so nice. We bring them indoors when it gets too hot, but for a treat, we will freeze a plastic cup of ice and then chuck the giant “ice block” on the porch. They lick at it and play with it. It’s like a little doggie waterpark
when they are done. --

On May 5, 1865, Decoration Day was first observed in the U.S., with the tradition of decorating Civil War soldiers’ graves with flowers. Later the date was moved to May 30 and included American graves from the first and second World Wars, eventually becoming better known as Memorial Day.
On May 6, 1527, the Renaissance ended with the Sack of Rome by German troops as part of an ongoing conflict between the Habsburg Empire and the French Monarchy. German troops killed over 4,000 Romans, imprisoned the pope, and looted works of art and libraries. An entire year passed before order was restored.

On May 9, 1926, Commander Richard E. Byrd announced that he and his copilot, Floyd Bennett, had made the first flight over the North Pole in Byrd’s Fokker trimotor airplane, the Josephine Ford. While Byrd’s navigational records were verified by the U.S. Navy and a committee of the National Geographic Society, some skepticism still remains about the claim.
On May 10, 1994, serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer was baptized by Roy Ratcliff while in prison at Columbia Correctional Institution in Wisconsin, in a whirlpool type of tub normally used for inmates with back issues.
