Garagiste Festival Celebrates Explosion of Micro-Winery Movement in Paso Robles, November 11th & 12th More than 50 micro-production wineries pour 200+ wines in the birthplace of the Garagiste artisan wine movement, marking a nearly 80% growth in limited production wineries on the Central Coast since 2010; Festival includes Rare and Reserve Tasting, The Many Sides of Syrah seminar, and Keep it Rockin’ After Party

T

he Garagiste Wine Festival, returns to its home base of Paso Robles to celebrate the continued expansion of the Garagistes, with over200 wines poured by more than 50 of the Central Coast’s most exciting microproduction artisan wineries. Festivities include Friday’s Rare and Reserve Tasting at the Pavilion on the Lake in trendy Atascadero, “The Many Sides of Syrah” seminar, the Grand Tasting, and the festival’s signature Keep It Rockin’ After Party. Tickets are on sale here. Taking place November 11th and 12th, the festival comes at a time when limited-production winemakers are dominating the wine scene in the Central Coast. Home to one in five of the state’s wineries, the Central Coast boasts more than 700 small-production wineries, with San Luis Obispo County leading the pack, according to Wines Vines Analytics. In fact, Wines Vines Analytics reports that the number of very small and limited production wineries in the Central Coast has exploded, more than doubling (61%) to 753, since 2010, with the number of limited production wineries (under 1000 cases) having grown an astonishing 79%. “It is no surprise that, today, Paso’s home county, SLO, leads the limited-production-wine scene. Back in 2011, its rich network of artisan winemakers, hand-crafting wine almost in obscurity, was the impetus for the founding of

6

WCTM1022.indd 6

the Garagiste Festival,” said Doug Minnick, Garagiste Festival Co-founder. “We set out to shine a light on these fantastic artisan winemakers and connect them with others like ourselves who love discovering new wines and wineries. We’re proud to have played a part in helping these wineries – and this movement – grow significantly. Eleven festivals later, we are still introducing extraordinary new wineries and winemakers to a growing and appreciative audience of wine consumers.” Dubbed “tasting nirvana,” “strange and wondrous,” and “one not to miss” by the LA Times, the Garagiste Festival showcases under-the-radar, innovative, commercial winemakers who handcraft 1500 cases or less of wine and is renowned for its diversity of wines, renegade spirit, passionate winemakers, handcrafted wines and rules-breaking, ‘no snobs allowed’ ethos. The Many Sides of Syrah: A Deep Dive into this Classic Grape This year, the festival’s signature tasting seminar, kicking off events on November 12th, revisits one of the most popular grapes among the festival’s garagiste winemakers, Syrah. Moderated by festival co-founder and winemaker, Stewart McLennan, “The Many Sides of Syrah: A Deep Dive into this Classic Grape” features tastings of different interpretations of the grape from

panelists and winemakers Doug Minnick (Hoi Polloi Wines and Garagiste Festival co-founder), Steve Martell (Kaleidos Winery) and Bret Urness (Levo Wine). “Long a favorite of Garagiste Festival winemakers, Syrah has been called the ‘winemakers grape’ because of the range of styles it can make, its ability to express terroir – as well as the winemaker’s personality – and, importantly, because of the excellent wines it can produce,” said Minnick. “It is such a signature grape of Paso Robles’s artisan winemakers, it is hard to believe that, before 1970, there were barely four acres of it planted in California. Today, it is at the heart of some of the greatest wines produced in Paso Robles, and we are excited to share three distinct explorations in our seminar.” Rare & Reserve Tasting The Paso Robles Garagiste Festival kicks off on Friday night, November 11th at 6:30 pm at the lovely Pavilion on the Lake in Atascadero, with a Rare & Reserve Tasting, featuring 50 special wines poured only at this event, as well as a wine country buffet. Saturday’s festivities “The Many Sides of Syrah” seminar begin at 11:30 a.m. for VIP ticket holders. Saturday’s main event, The Grand Tasting, starts at 2 p.m. (1 p.m. for early access ticket holders) and features over 50 winemakers pouring 200+ wines and 20+ grape varieties, as well as a silent auction benefitting The Garagiste Scholarship at CalPoly. Complimentary cheese and charcuterie will be available curated by Vivant Cheese, along with shopping from local artisan vendors. The fun continues with the Keep It Rockin’ After Party from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., featuring live music and local brews. All of Saturday’s events take place at Paso Robles Event Center

ne of California’s most highly anticipated events, the Santa Barbara Vintners Festival, returns for its 38th year on Saturday, Oct. 8, from 1 to 4pm. The first wine festival ever held in Santa Barbara County, the Vintners Festival will take place at the Old Mission Santa Inés in Solvang, featuring more than 70 wineries and gourmet offerings from over 30 regional chefs, restaurants, and food producers. Visitors can meet winemakers and winery owners to learn first-hand why Santa Barbara County was named 2021 Wine Region of the Year by Wine Enthusiast Magazine. Guests can also enjoy samples of the region’s best sparkling wine in the Bank of Marin Bubble Lounge, along with live music, and culinary and viticulture demonstrations. An Early Entry Admission ticket grants access to the festival at noon – one hour prior to General Admission tickets – providing the opportunity to interact more personally with winemakers, owners, and chefs in a more open and relaxed environment. Located in downtown Solvang, the festival is a short walk from many local accommodations, and onsite parking is available for those traveling from outside the area. Attendees are encouraged to walk, carpool, take advantage of local rideshare options, or take the train, to ensure safe and convenient transport to and from the festival. “Santa Barbara Wine Country has been internationally recognized as the Wine Region of the Year because it produces globally competitive wines from one of the most diverse growing regions in the world. But education, experience, passion, and wisdom the winemakers pour into every bottle is what really sets us apart,” said Alison Laslett, CEO of the Santa Barbara

Doug Margerum has been Nominated as Winemaker of the Year by Wine Enthusiast

D

oug Margerum and the Margerum Wine Company .announced Doug’s nomination as Winemaker of the Year for the 23rd anniversary of Wine Enthusiast’s coveted Annual Wine Star Awards, which honors individuals and companies that make outstanding contributions to the wine and alcohol beverage world. Winners will be announced in the magazine’s Best of Year Issue in December 2022. This is a terrific personal recognition and professional acknowledgement for Doug and the decades of contributions he has made to the Santa Barbara culinary and wine scene. Since his 1981 opening of the legendary Wine Cask restaurant, to his launching of the infamous Wine Cask Futures program in 1984, to his partnership with Bob Lindquist (Qupé) and Jim Clendenen (Au Bon Climat) in 1986 for Vita Nova Winery, or to his starting of Margerum Wine Company in 2001 and Barden Winery in 2012, Doug has been an instrumental part of Santa Barbara’s success as a global food and wine destination. This point was further cemented last year by The Wine Enthusiast as they named Santa Barbara Wine Country as the Region of the Year for the same Annual Wine Star Awards for 2021.

Margerum Wine Company Doug Margerum’s winemaking philosophy is to return to winemaking’s previous form of production – handcrafted and personal – and produces limited quantities of wines made from grapes grown at the Estate Vineyard in the Los Olivos District and at top vineyards from around Santa Barbara County. The wines are made at their state-of-the-art winery located in Buellton. Margerum primarily produces the M5 wines (Rhône varietal white and red blends); a co-fermented Syrah called Über; Sybarite Sauvignon Blanc; Riviera Rosé and other single varietal Rhône wines. In 2014, Doug released the Barden wines, which focuses exclusively on the terroir of the Sta. Rita Hills, sourcing fruit from top vineyards in the appellation and makes limited amounts of world-class, cuisinefriendly and age-worthy wines. Margerum sells a significant portion of their small production wines Direct to Consumer via their beautiful Santa Barbara Tasting Room at the Hotel Californian, which offers an array of curated wine flights, private wine experiences, dinners and cuisine. The upstairs in the Mezzanine is also available for private bookings and events. Doug also consults and produces wines for several local Santa Barbara wineries including Happy Canyon Vineyards and Paradise Springs Winery. Additionally, he has created several vibrant Private Label programs for restaurants and retail groups all over the country along with the negociant labels Valle de Inez, Riviera Wine Company and Diseño Wine Company.

Wine Tasting

Helpful Tips

Visiting a winery tasting room may sometimes be intimidating, especially if you are not used to wine tasting and aren’t quite sure what to expect. Additionally, Covid-19 has made it necessary for some changes and adaptations. Following the guidelines and etiquette tips below will help enhance your experience as you travel through wine country. Due to Covid-19, there have been changes to the wine tasting adventures. So please before you go: •P lan in advance. Most wineries are now by appointment and in some cases “as space is available” (should you not have made reservations). Don’t be shy to ask at the last minute, but understand they may be full or be reserved. • Understand that there may be a time limit • Ask about the different tasting experiences and costs. • If you plan to “share” a tasting, ask if it is okay. You may still be charged per person. • If this applies, ask if the winery is dog/child friendly. • Be sure to adhere to individual, local and state guidelines in place at the time (i.e. mask wearing until seated, etc.) • Be flexible • Don’t be self-conscious to share a tasting (*if appropriate) with your companion – it’s not looked on as being cheap, in fact, it’s smart. •D on’t worry if you think you don’t know good wine. “Good wine” is what you like. Period. • You don’t have to finish the glass. You are tasting, not drinking – use the dump bucket. Those little sips add up fast. • You don’t have to like everything poured. The reason you are tasting is to see what you do and don’t like. • Take time to smell the roses, or wine! Swirl the wine in the bowl of the glass then take your time, put your nose into the bowl of the glass … and inhale to experience the bouquet. See what fragrances you can identify: Earthy? Lemon? Honeysuckle? Cherry? Tobacco? It’s okay if you don’t identify any of those things, with time and tasting you will! •R emember the five “S’s” of wine tasting: See (the wine in the glass), Swirl, Smell, Sip and Savor. (Take a small sip. Let the liquid surround your taste buds, what flavors can you identify)?

Wine Country This Month: Central Coast

WCTM1022.indd 23

• Ask questions! Remember … there are no stupid questions. You are there to enjoy and learn, and your server is there to help. • Don’t feel pressured to buy a bottle or to join a wine club, (however, if the tasting is free, or if you have a private tasting with a winemaker, it is good form to purchase a bottle). • Leave a tip if you have had a nice experience ($5-$20 is a general rule, depending on the type of tasting). • Don’t wear scents into a tasting room (cologne or perfume), and try not to wear white! • Ask your server to recommend their favorite wineries to visit. • Seek smaller, out-of-the-way, boutique wineries. • Eat breakfast before you leave for the day and … hydrate – hydrate – hydrate! Hint: Drink one glass of water for each glass of wine. • Bring something to snack on such as crackers, breadsticks or a baguette, (but inquire in advance if outside food is okay to bring in). Take time for lunch. When picnicking at a winery, never bring wine from another winery • Don’t try to do too much. In general, three to four wineries will fill your day. • If possible have a designated driver (or use a driving service). If staff feels you have had enough to drink they may refuse service, it’s for your own well-being. • Trust your palate. Don’t worry if you don’t like what your friends or companions like. Not everyone likes the same things. This is about you – not them. • Enjoy yourself! Be respectful of all conditions and procedures. Wineries have had challenges to adjust their normal procedures due to Covid-19. Everything they do is to insure your safety, pleasure and that you have a great time. Covid-19 has had many positive effects for wine tasting: More intimate, less crowded, more time to really talk to your winery host. With this is mind ... let’s go tasting and have fun! BY DONALD SONDERLING

(It’s prudent to double check your planned visit, if possible, the day of your visit.)
