editor’s note

myself with Juan, Bianca, and Alessi Elizalde; the BC team with the Elizalde family heading offshore at Tali Beach for the cover shot

Dealing with P.H.S.S. It was the first of November when I put the tree up—much to my husband’s chagrin, because I go all cray-cray during this season. Deadlines are deadliest, due to the limited amount of time before offices/printers close, and everyone else’s brains are floating with their own Christmas stuff. I suffer from what I call “PHSS”—Pre-Holidays Stress Syndrome. Early onset signs of PHSS begin with a frantic search for decor, most certain that one has lost some pieces from last year’s stash, which will eventually emerge from God knows where. Naturally, the figurines, belen, tree, will be dusted off and checked for usability. Lights still complete? Check. Put up said tree and trim it with the kids, while the dog tries to eat some ornaments? Check. Angel for topper (again) located and put. However, watch out for assuming househelpers who may decide to put aforementioned topper on her own, without other’s knowledge, while one is deciding what ornament to place. Ruins the vibe and adds to PHSS, but then, one moves on. You will notice that PHSS escalates when “one” starts to overbuy (regardless of last year’s leftovers) on wrapping paper, gift bags/tags, cards, ribbons, and tape, just so one can (this year, for sure!!!) give out the presents for our clients early enough so that they don’t get drowned with all the others’. While preparing presents for work, the Excel sheets must also be updated with the ages of family, friends’, kids’ classmates, and teachers’ sizes and ages. Decisions: Is money uncouth as a gift, and is the amount too little? It is important to point out that PHSS can be alleviated by shopping early for aforementioned gifts. Yours truly chalked up points, as I was done since November. But of course, last minute giftees pop-up, and one must be ready with the easiest and safest presents so as not to pull one’s hair out due to hike up in PHSS: food gifts. Also, try not to bring one’s children to the mall or shopping, as they will point out items not included in the budget—and they will do it with, “I am so deprived” eyes, so naturally, the ‘parent’ will succumb to spending. Remember this simple equation: Mall + Kids + Christmas Season = PHSS. Unless, grandparents foot the bill, then forget said formula.

8

b c PHILIPPINES { december-january 2014 }

This year, PHSS was made more volatile due to Typhoon Haiyan. Are donations enough? Could I spare more? Do my kids really need this much toys, while other families are still in search for loved ones? This is when one’s heart sinks and eyes start to swell from depression and confusion. Then eventually, one remembers that life is short, and one cannot be made to feel guilty for blesssings. PHSS seems futile when one remembers this. Though watch out, PHSS may be aggravated by children’s practices for school and extra-curricular performances that will all be done in December, making adults’ schedules revolve around the little people’s. However, it is important to point out that this is temporary (and highly anticipated by aforementioned adults so it is not much of a bother). It is also an extra struggle when all kids are attacked by asthma, so take them to the doctor regularly for check-ups. Do not wait until it gets worse, as your PHSS will reach new heights. Towards the middle of December, as traffic reaches epic proportions (the type that one gets surprised how the bladder can hold copious amounts of water), PHSS has been known to reach dangerous levels. To avoid this, one must travel during off-peak hours, and preferably on weekdays. If not possible, wait it out or allot for extra travel time. Do restroom duties for all passengers who don’t wear a diaper, have snacks and drinks on hand, and portable entertainment devices within easy reach. My PHSS was extremely relieved once this issue was printed. We hope to give you a magazine you can be proud to display on your coffee tables. Speaking of amores, I adore the Elizaldes. I call her brood the Brangelina of the Philippines, alluding to their looks and how you hardly see them appear all together in the media. Now here’s the good news, there is a cure-all for the PHSS disorder: LOVE. First, you tackle the most mundane of your tasks, work duties. Everything aforementioned on PHSS becomes frivolous and unnecessary. Dig deep for your love for God, family, friends, country, the departed, and the ones to come. No PHSS can ever overshadow that. The best of the Christmas and New Year to you, and yours!

While she’s not jazzing up presents and creating unique tokens, Via is a stay-at-home mom who manages a small canteen in Far Eastern University where her husband, Jaybee Reyes, is the chief information officer. She spent most of her childhood in the States, and happily recalls her Christmas memories which includes her mom going the whole nine yards to make the holidays

magical. “Wow! [my mom did] the whole gingerbread thing...she used to get garden boots and then she used to dirty it outside so it would be like Santa walked into our house. She would rearrange the logs in the fire place, so it would like Santa fell; melted cookies...” Every holiday, she always had a lot of arts and crafts activities at school. This grew into a hobby (note: she has a

CHRISTMAS PRESENTS FOR KIDS Add personality to Christmas gifts for kids by accenting plain or colored wrapper with colorful ribbons and some cutesy tree ornaments, like Santa, a polar bear, snowman, reindeer, and the like. INSTRUCTIONS 1. For regularly shaped items that come in boxes, simply wrap it with paper and take a ribbon of any color. Tie it around the length of the box (if it’s rectangular) and make sure to pull snugly around the box. 2. Secure the first knot with a finger and create another knot to secure the ribbon. Then create your bow. If your ribbon has a design on one side only, make sure that the side with design is the one seen on your bow. You can do this by inverting the ribbon before making the bow. Tighten the bow and cut diagonally. 3. Take another ribbon (a thinner, differently colored one works best) and an ornamental bell and thread the ribbon through the hole. Take a Christmas ornament (reindeers, Santa Claus, trees, and the like) and thread the ribbon through the string attached to the ornament before tying down the accent ribbon.

very wide array of assorted ribbons) and through the encouragement of her friends, she started The Dotted Pig. Regardless of everything on her plate, she makes sure to have quality time with her family, especially her hubby, making everything look like a breeze, as she generously shared the below tips. Her advice about balancing it all? “Do what you love, and it won’t feel like work.”

UNUSUALLY-SHAPED GIFT ITEMS Items such as teddy bears, bags, clothing, figurines, and other oddly shaped items are sometimes challenging to wrap, especially with boxes often coming in pre-set sizes. Buckets and containers with lids (which can be bought in department stores, Ace Hardware, or Home Depot) are great alternatives, as they already look presentable. INSTRUCTIONS 1. Take your gift (or gifts—you can actually make a loot bag out of this bucket: toss in teethers, baby bottles, bibs, and other items for an expectant mom, or notebooks, pens, stationery, accessories, and other cute knick-knacks for your daughter) and place them inside the bucket. Seal it with a ribbon, making sure to make two knots—the first to secure the ribbon, and the second to make sure the bow doesn’t come off easily. Create a bow using the previous instructions. Ribbons that have the same design for both sides are useful for this type of gift. 2. Take your accent ribbon and slide it underneath the first bow that you created. Take a candy cane and secure it in place using the accent ribbon. Make a bow. 3. Take a piece of baker’s twine and thread it through the hole of a small ornamental bell. Slide the baker’s twine underneath your ribbons and fasten down. bcmag.ph

Personalized presents are great not just for Christmas, but also for birthdays, baby showers, anniversaries, and other occasions. Personalized items such as a cheese platter need not be wrapped in fancy paper, thus saving you the effort. Instead, accessorize with a ribbon and other knick knacks that can be found at craft stores.

Hol

INSTRUCTIONS 1. For this particular cheese platter, Via chose earthy colors because it’s a food item. Since the initials are in the middle of the platter, place your ribbon to the side, to showcase the design. 2. Take a ribbon and create a crosshair, pinning it down with your finger. Make a knot and proceed to create a bow. 3. Take a clothespin with small blackboard and using chalk, write the name of the recipient on it. If you can’t find wooden clothespins with the blackboard, you can easily create your own by cutting out illustration board and gluing it to a wooden clothespin. 4. Proceed to fasten your clothespin to the ribbon using a glue gun or if you’re pressed for time, just clip it onto the ribbon. BIRTHDAY PRESENTS For birthdays, anniversaries, or any type of occasion, you can accessorize gifts with artificial flowers, leaves, butterflies, and other such decors for your home, which can all be bought in department stores and specialty stores. INSTRUCTIONS 1.

Wrap the gift using your preferred paper. For this item, we used fiber paper, which is not creasy and easy to use. For these types of paper, it’s better to use double sided tape, so it won’t be seen on the outside of the package. 2. Take your thick ribbon and make a knot and bow. Slip your accent ribbon (a thinner one of different color) under the first ribbon. Cut out an orchid from a stem of artificial flowers. 3. Place the orchid on top of the accent ribbon and fasten it down by tying the ribbon.

. Washi Tapes are a great way to decorate your wooden clothespins and gifts. Just tape up the wooden clothespins and cut out the excess and you have a dressed up clothespin for gifts, stationery, and other items. . Use a different pair of scissors when cutting paper and cloth or ribbons. Use heavier scissors for cloth and thick items and lighter ones for paper. Using a cutter will also make cutting paper easier and straighter than using a pair of scissors. . If you’re doing your gift-wrapping as a business, it’s important to source for unique items that will make your final product stand out from the competition and from regularly wrapped presents. Shop online and explore stores that offer one-of-a-kind items that make presents more memorable.

% of people who suffer a heart attack each year in the U.S. are firsttimers, and those individuals may not know what’s happening. Sadly, many people do not get to the hospital on time, says paramedic Dale Hemstalk. “If someone is having a heart attack, for example, they should get to the hospital without delay upon the initial onset of symptoms,” says Hemstalk, who is also a software developer with Forté Holdings, Inc., a provider of health-care software that works closely with paramedics, emergency medical technicians and firefighters to speed delivery of medical services. The company’s newest software, iPCR, takes electronic patientcare reporting in the field to new levels of portability and affordability. “We live in an age in which we should be taking greater advantage of our technology for health purposes—but you have to call for help first!” Hemstalk says.

LOVE YOUR HEART

Whether it’s the holiday season or anytime in the year, make sure you keep your heart’s health in tip top shape through Makati Medical Center’s Heart Station, a one-stop shop center for heart care, diagnosing cardiac conditions, and rehabilitating patients. The center, which is composed of the Cardiovascular Diagnostic Laboratory and Cardiovascular Rehabilitation and Preventive Cardiology Unit, offers an array of high quality services, including ECG/EKG, Treadmill Exercise Stress Test, Two-Dimensional Echocardiography and Doppler Studies (2DEcho), Exercise Stress Echocardiogram, and Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM) among other tests. The Heart Station is located at the 3rd floor of Tower 2 at MMC, and is open from 7am to 7pm, Mondays to Saturdays. Common symptoms to watch out for

Symptoms for a heart attack: Men and women frequently report different symptoms. Men tend to have the “classic” signs, such as pressure, fullness, squeezing or pain in the center of the chest that goes away and comes back; pain that spreads to the shoulders, neck or arms; chest discomfort with lightheadedness, fainting, sweating, nausea or shortness of breath. For women, symptoms tend to be back or jaw pain; difficulty breathing; nausea or dizziness; unexplainable anxiety or fatigue; mild flu-like symptoms; palpitations, cold sweats or dizziness. Triggers tend to be different between the sexes, too. In women, it’s often stress; in men, it’s physical exertion. Symptoms for a stroke: There are clear, telltale characteristics of a stroke, including sagging on one side of the face, an arm that’s drifting down and garbled speech. But there are also more subtle signs from the onset, such as sudden numbness of one side of the body, including an arm, leg and part of the face; sudden

confusion, trouble speaking and understanding; sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes; sudden loss of balance; sudden headache for no apparent reason. Risk factors include diabetes, tobacco use, hypertension, heart disease, a previous stroke, irregular heartbeat, obesity, high cholesterol, and heavy alcohol use. Symptoms for heart failure: This is not the same as a heart attack, which occurs when a vessel supplying the heart muscle with oxygen and nutrients becomes completely blocked. Heart failure is a chronic condition where the heart can’t pump properly, which may be due to fluid in the lungs. Warning signs include shortness of breath, fatigue, swollen ankles, chest congestion and an overall limitation on activities. Just one of these symptoms may not be cause for alarm; but more than one certainly is. Risk factors include various heart problems, serious viral infections, drug or alcohol abuse, severe lung disease and chemotherapy. bc

s a child, one’s fondest Holiday season budg memory is waking up on Christmas morning and rushing to the Christmas tree to open up presents. As parents, nothing beats the look of joy on our precious ones’ faces, but in reality, preparing for those gifts (along with the rest of the family’s, your colleagues, and other individuals you intend to give presents to) can be such a pain in the head—and more so, the wallet.

et

Finding gifts for our loved ones shouldn’t be stressful, but instead be about the joy of giving. However, with all the holiday sale events left and right, and not to mention the army of people with the same agenda, it’s so easy to get overwhelmed and buy more than what you actually need. At the end of the day, we often end up short in cash and have nothing left to gift ourselves with. Not to worry because we offer these suggestions to make holiday shopping easier and more cost-effective:

ways to make holiday shopping easier Make a list. Check it twice.

Make a list of all the people you want to give presents to this Christmas. Classify them according to groups such as family, friends, and co-workers, the lady who does your hair at the salon, and other acquaintances you’d like to give a token of appreciation to. Allocate an amount for each person, and think of what kind of gift you would want to give him or her. Stick to that budget no matter what. Track your shopping as to avoid buying more than what you need. Keep the receipts so you can keep track of your spending. This will also ensure that you don’t buy multiple gifts for the same person. Shop early, if possible.

As the old saying goes, “the early bird catches the worm.” Avoid last minute shopping. Shoppers under pressure end up buying more than they need,

36

b c PHILIPPINES { december-january 2014 }

and not to mention, there are more people shopping at the last minute. Prices of items usually spike up during the Christmas season. Plan ahead, as there are a variety of items that are on sale or clearance before the holiday season. Plan your shopping trips.

Do your mall shopping at off-peak hours such as weekdays, mid-mornings, and mid-afternoons. If you can only shop on weekends, go to the mall as soon as it opens to avoid big crowds. Plan your shopping route for the most convenient and cost-effective ways to go around. You can also carpool or commute together with your friends to save on transportation energy and money. Look out for bazaars and tiangges.

Bazaars and tiangges are havens for

goods that are cheaper, and may be purchased in wholesale. Buying items in bulk can get you a bigger discount. Go to bazaars early on the first day, as there are more stocks available then, or wait until the very end so haggling would be easier, since vendors would want to get rid of their leftover items. Don’t be afraid of asking for an item at half the price. Just negotiate politely with the vendor until you agree on a price for a good deal. Consider handmade gifts or homemade goods.

DIY gifts save a lot of money and may even be more treasured by the gift recipient because of the personal touch. Search online for cool DIY gift ideas or use your hidden talents such as baking or crocheting to make personalized gifts. You can also consider buying from mom-and-pop stores for gifts that are cheaper and more unique. Be bcmag.ph

christmas purchases aware also of shopping drives that benefit the less fortunate, or those who have been afflicted by recent calamities. This way, you not only purchase meaningful gifts, you lend a hand to those who need it the most, and teach your children the value of charity.

credit cards, take advantage of promos that will let you split your bill into installments with no interest, or deals that enable you to purchase for example, P5,000 worth of items, and provide you with a free drink at your favorite cafe or free movie tickets. Be quality conscious.

Shop using cash.

Not all stores accept payment through credit card and discounts are usually higher for purchases using cash. It is more tempting to buy more items and go over budget when using a credit card. It is easier to allot money for each gift recipient using cash than using a credit card so ditch the plastic. If you cannot avoid

With the big crowds, it’s easier to just grab an item and rush for the counter. Don’t sacrifice quality for price. Carefully check items for any defects to avoid having to go back to the store for an exchange or refund. Think carefully about the person receiving the present. Will he/she appreciate receiving this type of gift? Why or why not?

When it comes to finances, it’s always good to be transparent with your partner, especially during the season of increased spending. According to a recent survey done by the McGraw-Hill Fed-

eral Credit Union, not only do today’s couples experience anxiety over holiday shopping, but many partners also lie to each other to cover up just how much they’ve spent or plan to spend.

According to McGraw-Hill Federal Credit Union President/CEO, Shawn Gilfedder, “The holiday season amplifies the anxiety that couples can sometimes feel, especially during uncertain economic times. We find that some couples go into ‘defense’ mode and avoid difficult yet necessary financial conversations. Avoiding money talk can create tension in relationships that only honest communication and financial education can heal.” bc

“THE HOLIDAY SEASON AMPLIFIES THE ANXIETY THAT COUPLES CAN SOMETIMES FEEL, ESPECIALLY DURING UNCERTAIN ECONOMIC TIMES.” For couples who will do their shopping, Gilfedder offers these concrete holiday spending advice.

Use your debit card rewards points to purchase gifts and gift cards. Depending on the rewards program, items are often reduced right before the holidays start. Household your credit card and debit card points together for greater purchasing power—don’t forget about points you may have on an old card. Know your credit card spending limits and current balances, so you can plan and not exceed. Check your overdraft protec-

bcmag.ph

tion. Make sure you have enough funds in your checking, savings, or money market account so you don’t overdraft and incur unnecessary fees. These can really add up. Make sure that your savings account and debit card are linked as overdraft protection to avoid costly fees in case of an overage. Consider short-term loans. Talk to your credit card customer service representative about a low interest, low balance, and short term personal loan or credit card to get you through the holidays. Not only will you build your credit,

but you’ll feel free to make the necessary gift purchases for your loved ones, allowing you time to pay it off in increments, after the holidays are over. Create a gift that keeps on giving! Open a custodial share savings account for your children, nieces, nephews, or other special young people in your life. Or, you can teach your children the value of saving money by opening them an account for Christmas, and letting them deposit their monetary presents from ninongs, ninangs, and other relatives.

INFANTS AND FRAGRANCES Sure, we all love the scent of a baby, but for those who like to pamper their kids with colognes, make sure to choose one that does not cause irritation or will hamper your child’s breathing. Choose scents that are light and hypoallergenic. Check for any allergies or respiratory issues before using any type of cologne, and make sure it’s pediatricianapproved. Same goes for room mists, linen sprays, and the like—make sure these products used on your child’s beddings and nursery won’t pose any health risks.

SCENTS AND THE PREGNANT BODY If you’re having a baby, expect your sense of smell to be heightened during the gestation period, all because of the estrogen hormone. Studies have shown that expectant mothers who experience extreme reactions to different smells are those who also experience bad cases of morning sickness. Nonetheless, sensitivity to scents varies from one pregnant woman to the other, so it’s up to you to decide what types of home and personal fragrances to use, as your favorite perfume might not smell as lovely as it used to, due to aforementioned pregnancy hormones. Good news is, this too, shall pass.

DIRECTIONS 1. Open

the brown paper bag and make around 4-inch cuts on every corner at the top of the bag. Fold each side outward. Create semi-circles using a pencil on the shorter sides of the paper bag. Cut them out, these will serve as the ears. 2. Deconstruct your used brown envelope until it’s flat. Cut out the curved corners of the deconstructed brown envelope. Paste these under the ears you created earlier on the bag. 3. Using the rest of the brown envelope, draw on a pair of antlers with a pencil. Cut these out, making sure one side is long enough to be inserted and pasted under the ears of the reindeer. 4. Take your brown paper bag and fold the top to one side. Draw a semicircle and cut the excess. This will become the reindeer’s face. 5. Using your scissors’ handle as a stencil, draw circles on your black art paper. Cut them out and paste it on the reindeer’s face. Paste on the googly eyes. 6. Make a small circle using red art paper. Dampen it with glue before sprinkling it with little red stars or red glitter. Draw two curved lines under the nose.

Cut out rectangles the shape of each side of the paper bag and stick them using glue. 2. Take your black art paper and measure a square that can go around the sides of the paper bag. Make sure your hat is tilted, as shown in the photo. Fold the edge of the black paper to simulate the rim of your snowman’s hat. Fold in the sides of the black paper into the sides of your paper bag and fasten with glue. 3. Take a strip of red art paper and put a little glue on the back. Slip it into the rim of your hat. Take your plastic gems and attach 3 to 4 of them in different sizes on one side of the hat. Accentuate with different colored sequins and tiny stars. 4. Attach a pair of googly eyes on the snowman’s face. Cut out a triangle out of orange art paper and attach it to the face. Pack as much as you can inside before sealing and sewing it off completely. 6. Take some sequins and attach them to one side of your stuffed ball craft. Lay it out to dry before hanging on your tree.

Cover the top of the stocking by folding in the white felt over the top. Hold together using a clamp. 3. Begin sewing around the stocking, making sure you also sew in the white felt on top. 4. Hard to imagine a brood more picture perfect than our cover family. Its two gorgeous heads, Juan and Bianca Elizalde, almost look as if their marriage was pre-arranged because they are that achingly well-matched in looks and personalities. Although there is a decade that separates their birth, you would never guess because they seem to move and even speak alike. To me, anyway. Theirs is an obvious union of souls, one we hardly witness in but a span of spending a few hours together.

he may have had a winning streak as one of our top models and as a host, but Bianca's current work 'project' makes her an even more perfect and timely center piece for our holiday cover. In early December, the headturning, timeless beauty launched and co-penned (together with our previous month's cover mom, Amanda Grtiffin- Jacob) a manual-slash-directory on parenting. uan may be familiar to you as the restaurateur behind Aria, Hama, and Café del Sol, among others—but behind all that entrepreneurship is an impressive business lineage. You’ll learn about this more in his interview. Presently, he also serves as VP of Operations for his father’s company, Manila Broadcasting Company (MBC), as he helps watch over the highest-rated radio stations in the country. He may have been born into ‘society,’ but he is as enthusiastic in discussing the more mass-audienced stars of their radio programs, like bcmag.ph

Behind Juan’s handsome face, smarts, and boarding schooldemeanor is a guy who is down-toearth and easygoing. One memory that stuck out is how Juan wanted to shave off some stubble that was bothering him, and Bianca playfully tells us, “He thinks he’s the star of the shoot.” It’s that kind of playful banter that endeared this brood to us even more.

Their three darling girls (Isabeli, Alessi, and Siena, born in that order) look like they came straight out of a children’s catalog (and behave like ones you know are raised watchfully by hands-on parents). To say that they are lovely is not gonna cut it, because more than the physical, what makes them extra precious is how wellmannered and sharing they are. I know, because I brought my own kids with me to the shoot, and they were generous and welcomed my little ones with open arms. In between their playful torrents of swimming, playing on the iPad, and watching TV, it was as enjoyable a day for my children as it was for our team—all props to our cover family.

JUAN ELIZALDE Kariz: Tell us about growing up in the Elizalde clan. Your parents set the bar pretty high. I read that your mom and dad used to hang out with the likes of The Beatles. That’s pretty awesome, if you ask me. J: It is. We were given a lot of opportuni-

My father and his brother are both Harvard graduates, so they excelled very highly in their scholastic achievements. My dad was a swimmer and competed in the Olympics. We were all made to swim also, and my older brother and I were competitive swimmers. My father set the bar pretty high for us, like you said. He really taught me the importance of being focused on business and what the goals and objectives are, so I’ve followed that ever since.

K: I can see that. Even after just spending an afternoon with you. Is it true about The Beatles? J: Yes, that is true. They were on the

boat, and The Beatles were supposed to be in Malacañang, for the official engagement party with Marcos and Imelda. When they found out that they were instead partying on this yacht, getting drunk all night in the middle of the ocean, the Palace went fuming mad.

K: That’s interesting, like it skipped you. J: I guess I’ve been able to just accept

K: Wow, so the stories are true. Okay, so you were reportedly raised by your mom and grandfather after your parents separated. How did that impact you? How old were you then? J: My dad and mom separated when I

K: I heard you kind of took advantage of the situation. J: Yeah, yeah, yeah. And so since I

But I missed my flight the day I was supposed to leave, and my brother stayed behind another day so I decided to stay late, but I had to go home later on that night. So my brother was like, “Don’t worry, I’ll take you to the airport.” Well, he never took me to the airport. When we got to his hotel, he sees Juan coming in and Juan’s like, “Dude, I’m getting ready, I gotta go to the airport.” My brother was like, “Can you take my sister with you?” So I wind up riding with him to the airport. Tropical Holidays and challenging, to say the least. I’m fortunate though, because in the companies that I’m involved with, I have good teams working with me. We have good management teams in place, which really allows me to delegate and to sort of step back and not micromanage so much. That’s one thing that I’ve been so blessed with, but also we set it up to that point. K: You have to work to that point, right. J: I get to work from home a lot, and then

I go to the various offices of the businesses that I’m involved with and have meetings with the respective teams at least once a week. We spend a couple of hours meeting, and then the rest of the time, I’m available via email or via phone, so I’m always connected. Even when I go on holiday, even in the States, I’m always connected. But that’s another disadvantage, though, with technology today, you’re constantly connected.

K: True. How did you know Bianca was “the one?” J: Bianca, you’d wanna hear this. You know, I’ve

had a couple of long relationships in my life and one thing’s for sure—my relationship with Bianca is, or has been the easiest, where we get along really well. I feel so at home with her and she’s really just a nice and easygoing person to get along with, and she’s not high maintenance. She’s just a good, simple person, you know?

K: Kind-hearted person. J: [Coughs; Talks to Bianca]

I’m talking about you. When we had our first daughter, I also saw a different side of her…

K: Her nurturing side. J: Her mother side, so

that really sealed the deal. I guess when you see a woman turn into a mother, you get to see a totally different side. When I saw that, I was just so— K: Fell more in love. J: Yeah. I never really

even thought about having kids.

K: That soon? J: I’m late, actually.

When I had my first daughter, I was 37. I never really wanted to have children for some reason. Maybe it’s because I came from a broken home, and that I wasn’t really thinking about the “mom and dad” thing.

K: The whole system. J: It just so happened

that we got pregnant, and we have this beautiful child and my life has changed ever since. It was just completely, 180-degree turn, and my life had gone in a completely different trajectory ever since, which is fantastic. It’s the best.

K: Tips? J: Tips

for making marriage work, I guess just always be willing to compromise. Be as close friends as possible, because at the end of the day, when you’ve grown old—physical beauty is not anymore an issue or an importance, the friendship, the sharing, and what you have together is gonna be the one that’s gonna carry you both through.

K: Yeah. Do you guys ever fight hard? Or it doesn’t get to that point? J: We have arguments, obviously, but

no—

K: It never escalates— J: This is not a relationship

like that. We wouldn’t have lasted this long if we were fighting constantly because I had previous relationships where that was the case, that’s why I didn’t last. I’m not one to put up with that crap.

K: So what’s it like being a dad to three girls. You are outnumbered. Do you have any plans on adding more? J: (Laughs) I’m really outnumbered

K: Absolutely. Funny first time dad memories? Do you change poopy diapers? J: Yeah, of course. I did that. You know,

I never expected that I would be the stroller-pushing, minivan-driving, diaper-changing dad. I never ever thought that that would ever be me. That actually did become me, singing Sesame Street, Elmo songs, Barney songs with my kids.

K: And memorizing it too, by the way. J: I didn’t know the names of all the

Disney princesses until I had my daughters, and I didn’t know all the songs of Barney or any of that, but now I know them all. But you know, as a first time dad, one of my most incredbcmag.ph

ible experiences actually was in the delivery room. I didn’t know what to expect. Bianca was there, giving birth via Caesarian section, and I had my video camera with me, so I was filming the whole time. It was pretty graphic, the doctor sticking her arms inside the stomach to pull Isabeli out—but after that when she pulls the baby out, Isabeli comes out, that was really a moment. The biggest moment to me was when the pediatrician wrapped her up in a blanket and gave her to me to hold for the first time in my life. That was truly a moment that just—not to be cheesy—it really changed my life forever. That specific moment, when I held her in my arms. It was like she was warm and breathing and crying, and this was like a new life. K: And she’s yours. J: She’s my baby, this is my responsibil-

ity now.

K: This is my life now. J: I mean not to sound

cliché but that was really the moment that my life changed. And I guess some people don’t get that reaction, but it really hit me.

K: Did you cry? J: Yeah, of course.

It was a beautiful moment. And for Alessi and Siena, I also teared-up when I held them in my arms.

K: Lastly, what do you think are your biggest successes and regrets so far? J: Having a wonderful family with just

a great wife, who I’m so blessed to have found, and to have our three wonderful daughters to me is the greatest success in my life. There’s no question about it, that family for me equals success. My father had a farm at Calatagan, and he would take us [there], and I think my fondness for animals came from him. I’d go horseback riding, climb up a haystack, and balance on the fences. I wouldn’t call it horrific by any standards. K: How many siblings do you have? B: I’ve got an older brother, Paolo,

and a younger brother who lives with my father. He’s more ‘quiet.’ I think the best memories would be out of town, spending time with my family abroad. We were always in the States, [since] my parents always had a house there, and that was for the summer getaway. K: Much like the one now, right? B: Right now, we rent the properties.

I wanted to be an animal trainer at Marine World. I wanted to be like Tarzan. I had all these pets and I had this dream of being able to really communicate with them, right? Maybe it’s from watching all these Disney cartoons, and there’s Snow White and Cinderella, and they’re talking to the pets? I didn’t care about the prince. I was like, ‘Hey! I want to talk to the pets.’ That was my thing. I recall really wanting to work or have a zoo. So since that didn’t pan out, I remember wanting to convert our house into a zoo—so I did by just buying as much pets as I could possibly, as allowed. My mom gave up and was like, “Please, no snakes.” K: Like what animals? B: I had a goat. I had

15-20 dogs. We had ducks, guinea hens. My dad’s chickens were there. I adopted all these cats. I had bunnies all over the garden. I had hamsters, guinea pigs, horses, parrots, birds, fish, salamanders. I had three tanks. One was my reptile tank. I had fish, and a little crayfish—like a bcmag.ph

she was in preschool, whenever they would have their musical numbers in school, she would just stand out, absolutely like a sore thumb. From the way she moves, her mannerisms, her expressions. All her music teachers have

What did I get myself into?” Anyway, it worked out. I got the Ivory campaign. It was great, and not good at the same time, because it actually became a problem for me with modeling later on. Tropical Holidays other brand wanted to touch me after, even if I didn’t have any lockout anymore. So you know what actually broke that mold big time? Doing the UNO cover. [Note: Kariz and Bianca worked together in that cover shoot that the Favises used to co-own, which was Bianca’s first foray into men’s magazines as a cover model] K: People saw you in a different light. B: That was my Miley Cyrus moment. K: I was there. B: It’s all your fault. No, but seriously—

obviously, it wasn’t a career choice. K: It just sort of happened. B: I’m one of those people

who have a hard time saying ‘no,’ right? I mean, there are certain things I’d say, “No, I’m not gonna do this,” but then you were like, “It’s a new magazine” and all that, so I didn’t see a reason to say no. I was really nervous about it, but it actually worked out. K: Let’s fast forward to you and Juan. Did you always find him cute? B: He’s 10 years older than me. I mean

when you’re 15—25 is like, whoa! He seemed ancient. K: I feel ancient to my children. B: There’s something very

funny, strange, or sweet about this relationship. Juan is one of those guys I would meet or bump into on random occasions. Very strange, but I remember every single time I did, every conversation we had. You know how you feel that way when you have a crush on someone? I did not have a crush on him, but for some reason, I did. We started dating and I was like, “Yeah don’t you remember I saw you at a concert?” I don’t know maybe in my subconscious? K: But you never acted on it, right? B: Not at all. He was in a relation-

ship, and I was in a relationship. At the time, I was doing an outreach program for kids that I would hold around Christmas time. I think it was in 2002, I needed a venue to have the Christ-

mas party for them and somebody had mentioned, “Why don’t you hold it at Star City?” [Editor’s note: The Elizaldes own the theme park] K: And he owns it. B: Yeah, but I didn’t

know about it. I was really young then, early 20s. So people were like, “Why don’t you just ask Juan?” I knew him socially. I got his number, called him and we met up. He was like, “Oh, okay. Come meet me and let’s talk about it.” He takes me to Sofitel or something like that, and it was sunset. K: What a weird “Star City” meeting, haha. B: I know, right? Apparently, his

office is nearby, so we were there and we hung out and had a really great time. Because of that event, we started texting each other a lot. Then he left for the States, but came home just before the party. I guess something

was developing already by then… “Developing”—gross, haha! Disgusting! Anyway, he actually won me via text. He comes home and that’s kind of how we started dating. It’s not like he asked me, “Will you be my girlfriend?” No! So baduy! (Laughs) K: Haha! And on to the moment he proposed to you at the cliff overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge. That was after how many years of being together or months or days? B: That was in ’06, four years later. We

already had Isabeli, so we were with her and she was a little baby. We were going hiking and stuff. Biggest surprise, because we didn’t talk about it. That wasn’t really in the plans, so he caught me by surprise. It was a great moment, you know? To have our daughter with us during that time. K: That makes it even more special. B: Definitely! I was in tears. It was

“I wanted to have a zoo. So since that didn’t pan out, I remember wanting to convert our house into a zoo, so I did by just buying as much pets as I could possibly, as allowed.” —Bianca, on her love for animals another child to take care of, I felt so useless. I couldn’t move but deliverywise, it was great. My third pregnancy was fine, although I was always so worried that I would get placenta previa again, right? I was on the wrong pain killers, so I had a harder time recovering from that one. K: Biggest changes you’ve experienced as a mom? B: Patience is tested everyday, right?

Not just that. I find that I am more at ease with myself.

K: Same here. B: I think being in the modeling indus-

try just put a lot of pressure on me. K: Unnecessary, sometimes. B: Absolutely, it’s not really

great moment. I even remember thinking that I didn’t see this one coming. What else am I not seeing here? When did he have time to buy the ring? To plan all of it? K: Makes you think! Can you describe your three pregnancies? I know Isabeli is 7, Alessi is 4, and Siena is 2. B: My first was a breeze as a pregnan-

cy, really. I could do jumping jacks. Everything was perfect—but the delivery was difficult. I was gunning for Lamaze, all natural, no epidurals. We did birthing classes, but I didn’t dilate. I was induced. She was overdue—my amniotic fluid started dropping really quick that we had to do an emergency C-section. Recovery was fine. My second pregnancy was a disaster. I was placenta previa. I was bleeding profusely, so I thought I lost her. I was put on bed rest, which wasn’t fun—cabin fever. I was going through ups and down, just being so unhappy emotionally. Having bcmag.ph

for everyone. I remember always feeling like, I just have to lose weight, lose weight, lose weight. It was a lot of pressure. I just didn’t feel comfortable in my own skin, which is weird, right? That’s the one time of your life where everyone was praising your physical looks, but yet I was so unhappy. K: You always felt like you could improve… B: Exactly! Like it just wasn’t great.

Right now, I am way over—weight wise—yet I’m just so content. I don’t put pressure on myself to lose all the weight. I’m much more comfortable and happier with myself.

K: So you have a new project, “Project Mom.” What urged you to co-author it? B: Amanda [Griffin-Jacob] and I wrote

this book together. The idea actually came, maybe 2 years ago. My partner and I at Eden, Buding [Aquino-Dee], put an event together. Amanda had just started Glam-O-Mamas at this

time, so I was like, “Why don’t we get her?” Maybe get another mom to come in and help us with this project just to make it stronger. There was a lot of plans with it. Mainly, it was an event. Together with the event, we would produce a book, but the plan for the book was more of a directory with some info. Ideas were tossed in the air, and as we started planning the event, it became a logistical nightmare because there was no venue. It was so expensive, all the sponsors. Then, our other partner gave birth and Amanda moved to Hong Kong, so we shelved the idea. Then Amanda approached me earlier this year and was like, “Biancs, why don’t you and I just write a book instead of doing the whole thing?” I said, “Okay, why not?” We had no idea on what we were gonna do. I think since she was doing Glam-O-Mamas, she was thinking of something along those lines but I was like, “Why don’t we do something completely different? Let’s do a separate book. Let’s make it like a manual.” The only thing that I was very particular about was I had a very particular style of parenting… K: Attachment parenting. B: …where I breastfeed for so long. I’m

also a very eco-friendly mom. I wanted to have a green box in every chapter, to inject a green element. I didn’t want to produce anything that wasn’t in line with my philosophies in life.” She was like, “Yeah. That’s no problem. Let’s do it that way.” It did wind up a lot greener than what we had anticipated, but it was also because we practice the same things, so it’s very true to our nature. K: Top three values that you’re instilling in your daughters at this point already? B: Kindness. Strong sense of family, if december-january 2014 philippines

that’s a value at all. Honesty, I’d say. K: What do you never leave home without? B: My cell phone is like a third ap-

pendage. And in my bag right now, I have two cameras. K: Scariest moment as a parent, and how did you overcome it? B: Isabeli must’ve been about 2 years

old. We were in Boracay, it was 12 midnight, and she was in bed with us. We were still awake, watching TV. I don’t know why she was awake. I remember she got the empty container of Berocca, she was biting the cap and then all of a sudden, I look at her and I’m like, “What is in her mouth?” I see something like sand all over her mouth coming out. We realized that the desiccant was within the cap and that she cracked it, so the desiccant was all over her mouth. She started crying and I was freaking out. It looked like sand from the beach, all over her mouth. K: It’s a good thing you mentioned that... B: Because nobody knows—techni-

cally, these things supposed to have to have a silica jar, right? So I grabbed

her, brought her to the bathroom, induced vomiting. This was at 12 midnight. There were no doctors. If there was an emergency and we’re thinking, “We’re in freaking Boracay. Flights were not until a few hours.” We were panicking, so Juan was calling the poison control center. Good thing it’s not poisonous. It’s not toxic, right, but it certainly... K: Can give you something gastrointestinal, maybe. B: Yeah, but I made her

vomit it all out. I recall Juan getting desiccant and putting it in his mouth just to test if there’s a burning sensation and what is the taste? Just to see what the hell was going on. He did it on impulse. Like, what the hell? And it was fine. She was fine. It was the first bad experience with a kid, major scare in Boracay. No access to hospitals, calling up doctors. They were like, “Don’t worry. Don’t panic. Do this. Do that.” It was a nightmare. K: Crazy. B: And in

the States one time, her finger got ipit on the bathroom door and again, it was midnight and there were no doctors. We had to drive to

an emergency room. But everything was just fine. For some reason, with her, it always happens at midnight at night—so it’s just like, can you just sleep early? (Laughs) K: As a mom, what have you found to be true? B: Definitely that there is no greater

love than what you have for your kids. I don’t know if you had to worry about this with your first child, pregnant with your second, you worry like how could I love anyone as much as I love my first? K: I already love to my full capacity. B: Exactly. You feel that way, right?

You worry that, what if I don’t like this baby as much as I like the first? I worried about that, but after I had my second—on day one—you just feel it without forcing anything, right? Maternal instinct and love is super strong. K: Like you would die for your children in a heartbeat. B: I think it’s a concept that not a lot of

single women who are non-moms understand, but you just get there. You don’t even have to try to. bc

The late Italian tenor had more than the opera on his mind. He was a father, a husband, humanitarian, and a classic style icon

“Nothing that has happened has made me feel gloomy, or remain depressed. I love my life.”

a

–– Luciano Pavarotti, 1935-2007

s the holidays are time for merriment and celebration with good music, we remember one of the greatest tenors that lived to inspire many worldwide. On September 6, 2007, the world remembered, and mourned over the passing of one of music’s biggest legends of all time–opera singer Luciano Pavarotti. At the age of 71, the “King of High C’s” successfully crossed-over musical divisions, winning love and admiration from people of all walks of life with his commanding “perfect pitch,” and irrefutable take on songs performed inside packed theaters and concert venues, generating standing ovations from mesmerized audiences. A philanthropist behind the famous “Pavarotti and Friends” annual charity concert for a cause (he also helped raise $8.2 million for the war children of Bosnia), the tall, robust, and outgoing Pavarotti can be recognized also for his grand costumes (remember the scarf he wore in, “La Boheme?”), even having a trademark handkerchief that he would use when he waves at the audience. And since Christmas is the time for giving, we also look back at this United Nations Messenger of Peace (and father of four daughters, and a son, whose life was taken due to complications during birth), who was a strong advocate for children’s rights and poverty. In some photos with his first wife and children, the three girls would be impeccably dressed to match one another. Called ‘Papa’ by all four daughters— Lorenza, 50, Cristina, 48, Giuliana, 46, and Alice, 10 (from his marriage in 2003 to his assistant, Nicoletta Mantovani)— Luciano gathered thousands of admirers. His loved ones, friends, co-artists, and fans all over the world acted as one family to pay homage during his funeral in Italy. The sensational singer had united his “children” for the last time, but his voice will continue to resonate in our hearts. P hotograph by splash n e w s . com
