Birthdays, Beauty, and more
Let me start by wishing two people I would give my life to the best birthdays of their lives—my husband, Tom, turns 38 on July 28th, and my second girl, Maxine, will be 7 on July 22nd. We advanced their celebration end of June with some much wanted R&R at the inimitable Discovery Shores in Boracay, and it was a 4-day celebration of sand, surf, plus too much sun and food. They even threw us a surprise cocktail party, apart from the surprise that awaited us when we checked into our room. During the vacation, Maxine and I went “clamming”— meaning we collected small clams that washed up ashore and released them out to sea afterwards. It was one of the highlights of our adventure. Max is of simple pleasures like myself, and this year she actually asked for clams for her birthday (and for the cake design). I explained to her with a heavy heart that clams are mostly for food and that we would have a difficult time caring for them at home. My afternoon with mollusks and Max alone brought me even more insight into her kind heart and wit that I would normally not witness if she’s busy playing with her sister or the iPad. I thank God more than ever for another year with my family as I watch them grow into their best selves. My husband is my rock, my soul, my everything, and I cannot imagine any life without him and our kids. On more natal days, my only boy is turning 1 the day after my birthday (he is a dragon, born August 16th) and I can’t help but be a bit teary-eyed as I type this. This time last year, I was almost going to pop. On the day of Mathis’ birth, I was at a good friend’s son’s birthday party (Kristine and Oyo Sotto’s son, Kiel) enjoying the food, when I had to excuse myself to go to the hospital. I already knew that morning that I was going to give birth, and in fact, even asked my doctor if she would allow me to attend the celebration. How can anyone forget a day like so? At present, my little darling can almost walk, and he is very loud and clear at uttering “Mama,” which I think means anything from calling my attention to, “Get me out of the house!” because this guy is practically allergic to staying home. He absolutely needs to be busy, or gallivanting off to an adventure anywhere (even just to The Farm Resto, which is 5 minutes away from our home), and this is where I’m beginning to see the difference between parenting my girls and him. Case in point: reading a storybook to my girls when they were babies meant having their undivided attention and maybe them trying to pull the book for a closer inspection. For my Mathis, reading begets about 10 seconds of undivided attention followed thereafter by trying to tear the pages or see how far

he can throw the book. Ahhh, uncharted territory for myself as a mom, but the journey is just as exciting. By the way, this mother is growing wiser at 37 on August 15th—not that anyone’s asking, but since we were on the topic… Our cover dad, Coach Luigi Trillo also turns a year older this July 13th (thank heavens for Facebook’s “About” link). It is with pride that I call Luigi my high school batchmate, not just because he is coach of the Alaska Aces (AKA this year’s champion team of the PBA’s Commissioner’s Cup), but also because he is one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet, and matched by none other than his stunning wife with the unfair genetics and eating discipline, TV host, Ria Tanjuatco-Trillo. Ria has always been transparent and kind, and I appreciate that among women, especially. She is straightforward and intelligent, which is why their beautiful children are just a joy to be around, coming from a rare breed of parents. Trillo baby #4, Xabier, makes his debut here—and we are more than delighted to bring you those chubby (his name, coincidentally is said “Cha-bi”) cheeks on our pages. Another special story this issue is our BC Beauty Awards. Let’s face it, there’s too many options in shops, and as mothers, we either have too little time or budget to peruse them all, so we did the editing for you. Some that we chose are oldies but always goodies, and some are the latest offerings from the brands, so I hope this cuts out some of the BS when it comes to helping you maintain your looks. Although I am not very bothered by my extra facial lines and the blossoming white hair, I still do want to help myself out wherever I can. I already accepted the fact that cellulite and stretch marks are my permanent battle scars from three childbirths, and from eating more than my share during my pregnancies—but my face, skin, and hair, I can always give their boost. So again, thank you for adding BC to your bookshelves, and I hope we made some of your reading time worthwhile. To the rest of you celebrating your birthdays, may you all have a healthy, peaceful, wealthy, and joyful one surrounded by loved ones. Hard to ask for more.

“Color is a fun way to add dimension to any room, large or small.”
We know you’re a huge name in the children’s industry, but we’d love to know the lowdown behind the artist.
I’m passionate about my work as a designer, but living a full and balanced life is a priority. Family is at the heart of everything I do—my husband and daughter are my confidantes, inspiration, and support. It was the birth of my daughter that actually motivated me to create my first baby collection as a hobby, and she still is my muse. When it comes to my favorites, I have many—anything coconut, a fantastic rain storm, Bermuda beaches, sleeping babies, unfussy fashion and fresh clean sheets, but not in that order! I strongly dislike a braggart, clutter, tight clothes, and most of all, bad manners.

b c PHILIPPINES { JULY-AUGUST 2013 }
One thing that may surprise people is how much I adore watching NBA basketball! I didn’t expect to hear that! So how and why did you come to be a designer in the kids’ field?
When I became a mom, the industry lacked baby linens that were sophisticated in design. I fell in love with vintage, one-of-a-kind textiles, and began creating designs for the nursery that offered a fresh approach to nostalgia—with a new concentration on modern—all with a mix and match sensibility. I was fortunate enough to turn my hobby and passion into a successful business that has been embraced by parents all over the
country, many of which have become VERY loyal customers. [In 2007,] I was offered an exciting opportunity to design an exclusive collection for Babies“R”Us. My line offers modern parents a complete assortment of colorful baby linens, bold room décor, fashionable clothing, cool diaper bags, and sleek nursery furniture—all designed with the best quality and affordable prices. Your price point is very good. How are you able to balance that, and not sacrifice the high quality of your apparel and products?
Quality is so important to my brand. When creating my collection for Babies“R”Us, my goal was to offer bcmag.ph

great design and high quality at affordable prices. I am working with manufacturers who are experts in their field to source the best fabrics, and produce superior products. Who do you look up to professionally?
I admire any working mother who can juggle her career and family— and succeed in both. It’s hard work, and the balance is a huge accomplishment. Would you say your designs are more traditional or modern, or in between?
My designs have evolved over the years. They are now bright, bold, fresh, and modern.
How long does it take to design a collection?
I am lucky [because] I love my work! I often revisit my archives, and take clues from fashion, textiles, and the furniture industry. Due to the breath of my collection at Babies“R”Us, I spent a year creating my designs, and I am confident it will appeal to modern families. When should a pregnant mom begin to buy stuff for the baby?
Both. I trust my signature style, and love to add functionality—it’s always a welcome surprise.
Shopping for baby is such a personal decision. While babies are joyous and should be celebrated, it should begin when new and expectant parents feel comfortable.
Where do you get your creative juices from?
Over the past few years, a lot of designers have emerged. How do you

My inspiration includes modern art, ‘60s fashion, and nature. My ideas are endless—whether I’m traveling, reading, or enjoying time at home.

I have always believed in the motto, “Do what you do best.” I trust my instincts and design with confidence. How is your alliance with Babies“R”Us like? We heard that this is their largest product launch by an exclusive designer.
As a designer, [they] gave me the chance to apply my fresh and modern design sensibility to create my favorites for fashionable moms and babies— including layette, plush, and diaper bags, as well as the opportunity to embrace the natural progression of my brand into exciting new categories, including furniture. I couldn’t be more thrilled with our partnership, and I hope moms, grandparents, and gift-givers will adore the collection as much as I loved designing it. Best design tip for parents?
My best design advice? Color! It can easily transform your nursery. Color is a fun way to add dimension to any room, large or small. bc

staying safe from cell phone radiation Find out ways we can keep ourselves and our families safe from the harmful effects of one of the most utilized electronics in our homes—the mobile phone P h o t og r ap h by mike tesi w o r ds by D A V I D O L S E N

or years, the issue of cell phone safety has been a hot topic of debate, but we now know, thanks to years of stringent laboratory research, that cell phones do emit levels of radiation that can negatively affect one’s health. Aulterra, the leading cell phone radiation neutralizer manufacturer in America, is introducing the new Aulterra Neutralizer into U.S. markets. The Neutralizer is a small holographic disc which has been scientifically proven to be significantly effective in reducing and neutralizing the harmful effects of electromagnetic waves. Electromagnetic fields are all around us. In their natural form, they are harmless. When electromagnetic fields are man-made, they have been shown to disrupt the DNA structure of our bodies, as scientific studies have demonstrated.

“Growing evidence suggests that electromagnetic fields E (EMF) can break or nick DNA strands. This phenomenon is known to be associated with cancer,” said Glen Rein, PhD, of the Quantum Biology Laboratories and Stanford University professor whose research demonstrated that with the Aulterra Neutralizer, there is a reduction in the in-Vitro Electromagnetic Field Effect of Cell Phones on Human DNA. In 2011, International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified mobile phone radiation on the IARC scale into Group 2B: possibly carcinogenic. Now the word “possibly” puts things into perspective, as we don’t possibly want to put our loved ones at fatal risk, especially since we are in today’s world, bound to our mobile phones, whether we like it or not.
C LE
In the absence of neutralizing devices, here are some tips on keeping your family safer from the effects of excessive cellphone radiation:
If they would like to play with your mobile (and make sure they are on a padded surface when they do so, as phones tend to fly around when kids are around), turn off your phone or at least keep on airplane mode. Use a headset or a wireless headphone with low power. This removes the phone from being located right beside your brain.
Keep mobile phones away from all babies and children. Easier said than done, so we move on...
Do not use mobile devices in bed if co-sleeping. Not only is the signal very strong around people in close proximity, it could fall and hurt sleeping children.
Everyone who has an inquisitive baby or toddler know that they are drawn to gadgets that their parents mostly use.
Text instead of talking. It uses less power and exposes you less. If you need to talk, use your phone on speak-
er, and keep it further away from your head. If you place it on your lap, use a barrier (like a book or laptop desk) between your phone and your body. Since not much study has been found on the effects in utero, pregnant women should keep cell and wireless phones away from their bellies. Use your phone when/where the signal is good. In marginal areas, it makes up for its power output, so you are exposed to more radiation. Use hands-free earpieces or connect it to landlines via Bluetooth technology. Studies show that the SAR (specific absorption rate) of radio frequencies is limited when the phone is further from your body. bc
HE
FACTS ON CELLPHONE RADIATION
In a study by the University of Washington, Dr. Henry Lai discovered that brain cells are clearly damaged by microwave levels far below the U.S. government’s recommended safe zone and that even small doses of radio frequencies can accumulate over time to cause harmful effects. In a research study conducted by Italian scientists, it was discovered that radiation emitted by cell phones is especially conducive to the growth of cancerous cells. In a study funded by the telecom industry to prove the safety of cell phones, it was revealed that cellular damage and tumor growth can be induced in a laboratory setting using radiation levels one-third of those listed the FCC’s exposure guidelines.
24
b c PHILIPPINES { JULY-AUGUST 2013 }
At the University of Utah, a researcher discovered that the younger the child, the greater the amount of radiation is absorbed by the brain. Because of the intense electromagnetic field produced by most automobiles, Volkswagen of Europe has issued warnings stating that using a cell phone while in a car can be even more dangerous to the health of the individual. Since 1975, the number of cases of brain cancer in the United States has increased by 25%. Studies indicate that using a hands-free headset and earpiece is actually a greater health risk than holding the phone directly against the ear.

picture perfect “People especially want to look their best when hundreds, or even thousands, of viewers are looking at their photos—we hear it, too,” say Drs. Rick and Arlene Noodleman, the husbandand-wife physician team at Silicon Valley’s Age Defy Dermatology and Wellness. “The good news is that there are now effective, minimally-invasive, low downtime approaches that reduce or even eliminate the appearance of sun-damaged, aging skin,” dermatologist Dr. Rick Noodleman says. Both physicians emphasize that the key to youthful skin is both correction and prevention—and no, it’s never too late to start addressing the latter. “Achieving beautiful, healthy skin is a process, not an event. It’s accomplished by working from the outside-in and the inside-out,” says preventive medicine specialist Dr. Arlene Noodleman. “The link between nutrition and the quality of your skin is also ‘written all over your face.’” To ensure Facebook, Instagram and Google+ users look their best online, the Noodlemans offer this advice, based on more than 25 years of research and clinical experience: Work from the outside-in: “There are a number of corrective and preventive steps you can take to achieve a more youthful look,” says Dr. Rick Noodleman. For all skin types — Protect your face from the sun. Use a sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB light, and wear a wide-brimmed hat. Note that despite the cloudy/rainy weather we have nowadays, the sun’s rays still penetrate the clouds and affect our skin. For older skin — Exfoliant creams remove dead
skin cells that don’t slough off as readily as when we were young. Prescription creams have been shown to reduce wrinkles and “liver spots” due to sun exposure.
For forehead wrinkles — Injected Botox, a brand of botulinum toxin, partially immobilizes the muscles that form expression lines so the skin smooths out, although some deep expression lines may not go away.
For sun damage and acne scars — Lasers can resurface facial skin by stripping away the outermost layers. Some “non-ablative” lasers also stimulate collagen formation, which helps smooth wrinkles.
And from the inside-out: “No matter what your skin type, healthy eating is an essential component of a good skin care regimen,” Dr. Arlene Noodleman says. “And, for some people, eating the wrong foods can actually cause problems.” A natural defense system: Foods rich in antioxidants seem to have a protective effect on the skin. For instance, a 2007 study by the American Society for Clinical Nutrition found that women ages 40 to 75 who consumed more vitamin C, an antioxidant, had fewer wrinkles. Antioxidantrich foods include carrots and other yellow and orange fruits and vegetables, spinach and other green leafy vegetables, tomatoes, blueberries, peas and beans, fatty fish, and nuts. The study also found that women who consumed more linoleic acid—found in nuts and seeds—had a lower incidence of dry skin.
Acne-prone individuals should avoid dairy products, especially cow’s milk; processed foods high in white flour, such as white bread; and white rice and sugary foods and beverages such as candy bars and soda. Foods that cause ‘spikes’ in blood sugar levels can also trigger hormone production, which in turn can boost oil production. Curbing acne flare-ups:
Psoriasis, rashes and other skin conditions:
Certain foods can cause hives and other reactions. Individual sensitivities vary, but common culprits are gluten, dairy, eggs, and additives. People with psoriasis may see improvement by eating a low-glycemic load, Mediterranean-style diet. “Take a holistic approach to your skin’s health,” the Noodlemans say. “Your skin responds not only to what you put in and on your body, it also reflects your overall mental and physical health. Taking corrective and preventive measures that reduce sun-damage, increase exercise, promote healthy eating and decrease stress will help you look your best on social media.” bc

Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see a shadow. —Helen Keller
Best Cleansers & Toners 101: The primary purpose of cleansers is to ward skin off make-up, dead skin cells, oil, dirt, and other pollutants. But you knew that already. The reason we really cleanse is because we know deep down that our late night partying, sleeping with our make on days are far gone, and a haggard skin as a result will bite us back when we least expect it (by the way, they’re called the forties). Toners, on the other hand, are used to further clean the skin and minimize pores, and prepare it for moisturization. As for the face mist, well, let’s just say there are days when even a trip to the bathroom to freshen up is just out of the mom schedule equation. Anyone who’s done their share of school schlepping and fills their kids’ social and extracurricular calendars to the brim knows exactly what we mean.

Best Facial Scrubs Some dermatologists recommend exfoliating once a week (we say do it at least 3x if you get a chance—your skin needs all the help you can provide). Get rid of dead cells that accumulate on the surface of the skin. When washing your face, use lukewarm to warm water and not hot water, as that will remove skin oils that naturally moisturize your skin. Always pat—not rub—your skin dry with a towel. Lather, scrub, repeat.

Best Scents The earliest record of humans creating perfume dates back to 4,000 years ago, but it wasn’t until the late 19th century when modern perfumery began. That was just a brief history so we are reminded that there’s wisdom in age, and that a woman’s scent lingers. If you want to leave a lasting impression with citrus or floral undertones (and mask baby spit-up), arm yourself with eau de toilette or parfum. Or don’t even do it for others, think of it as an instant perk-me-up. A reminder though to nursing mothers, avoid spraying perfume near your chest area to avoid strong smells for baby.

Shown here is a cocktail of facial creams that range from the drugstore kind to decadent ones. Apply these onto clean skin. To create a skincare routine for yourself, first identify your skin type and invest in moisturizers that address your skin problem (oil, acne, sensitivity, dryness, etc—yes, you may be experiencing skin puberty especially during and after pregnancy). Make sure to consult your dermatologist (or OB GYN) for the best options for your skin type.

Best Body Lotions Do we reaallly have to moisturize our body? You sound like your 6-year old, so listen up. Look at your heel, and it should give you a general idea of how your skin will look like years (or gasp, months) from now. So to those who have dry, cracked, peeling soles on your feet, get to a lotion or butter, STAT. For oily skin, it is recommended that you use water-based lotions, while those with dry skin are advised to use oil-based lotions and heavier creams to pack in the moisture. It is also best to apply body lotion immediately after bathing, when the skin is still damp. For expectant moms, there is hope in cocoa butter lotions and oils (many can attest to this) to prevent stretch marks. Although we don’t really mind the battle scars from childbirth ourselves, we could do with a few less stripes.

Best Hard Soaps Still the most common type of soap around, hard soaps are often the go-to for meticulous and convenient bathing (the, “I have to drop the kids to school” type of time involved), without the aid of a loofah or scrub. Skin experts state that bar soaps leave no room for bacteria (hallelujah, all you germaphobes) because it contains no water, compared to its liquid counterpart, which is mostly made of H2O. When choosing bars, look for moisturizing and anti-bacterial qualities to keep your and your family’s skin healthy and cleaner.

Best Face Makeup For the often glam-deprived that we are, we need coverage and color. There are different types of foundation—ranging from sheer coverage (with minimal tint or pigment) to full, which covers birthmarks, blemishes, and other imperfections (hello, sun spots and early warning signs of warts). Use blush sparingly on the apples of your cheeks and the bridge of your nose to achieve (AKA fake) that sunkissed look, and to add contour to your cheekbones.

Best Lipsticks
The history of lipstick is as rich as the colors they are available in today, but the earliest lipsticks of the world were created out of crushed gemstones, dyes, and even insects. Today, the main ingredients of lipsticks include mineral oil, olive oil, emollients, petroleum, and other organic and inorganic pigments. Nice to know, right? But more importantly, lipstick makes us look a bit more Angelina Jolie-esque (and by default, you are now married to Brad Pitt). With the right shade, our faces are brightened and transformed from sweet momma to husband temptress. Imagine you and your pearly whites flashing from your fuchsia or red rouged lips, LOLing over a mock-tail or two with your other mommy girlfriends while the babies play in a nearby Gymboree before the older kids and the hubby come home from school and work, and clacking your high heels with a sexy swagger on your hip while walking to your car. Ahh, the power of lip color—our very own magic wand. A mother can dream, can’t we?

Best Shampoo There is nothing that gives away the kind of day you had more than unkempt hair. I can always tell if one is going on a school or grocery run, or one is just going somewhere familiar with the kids by the effort we mothers put into styling our hair. Treat your tresses to a daily shampoo that isn’t harsh on your hair and scalp. Especially for those who have colored or dyed hair, invest in a shampoo and conditioner that will repair the damage done by various treatments and look for ingredients like proteins, oil extracts from nuts or fruits (they act as moisturizers), and veer away from chemically-charged products that may leave hair dry.

Best Eye Make-up
Eyes are truly the windows to our soul (or at least good eye make up helps you take a better profile avatar on Facebook without having to widen your eyes in every photo opp to make you look like you doe-eyed teenage self). These tools coax your peepers into instant perkiness as if they were done up by pro-make up artists. Depending on the occasion, choose colors that would go well with a PTA meeting or a night out with the hubby. Think: nudie and lighter brown colors for day; darker brown, gray, and black, smokey for night. Eyeliner color and thickness usually dependent again on time of day. Pretty self-explanatory.

We do, however, applaud the whitening effects of these hardworking soaps on places where the sun don’t shine. Let’s face it, we took some major blows to our skin during pregnancy. To counter some stubborn dark spots on your body (elbows, knees, underarms, other joints and hidden ‘corners’), these may be your best bets. INGREDIENTS: Pizza Dough: 1 tablespoon yeast ¼ teaspoon sugar ½ cup cream plus 3 teaspoons lukewarm water 2 cups flour 1 teaspoon salt
f
PREPARATION: 1. Crumble the
yeast into a small bowl and mash in the sugar. Add the 3 teaspoons of water and cream the mixture together. Set aside in a warm, closed off area for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the mixture is puffed up and frothy. Sift the flour and salt into a large, warmed bowl. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture and remaining lukewarm water. Using a spatula or wooden spoon, gradually mix the flour into the liquid mixture. Continue stirring until the flour is incorporated and the dough comes away from the sides of the bowl. 2. Turn out onto a lightly floured board and knead for 10 minutes. The dough should be elastic and smooth. Rinse and dry the bowl and return the dough to it. Cover with a damp cloth and set the bowl in a warm, closed off area. Leave for 45 minutes to 1 hour, or until the dough has risen and almost doubled in bulk. 3. Turn the risen dough onto the floured surface and knead it for a further 3 minutes. You now have pizza dough ready to use and roll out into a crust. Add to the crust: 2 tablespoons of pizza or pasta sauce (if you’re too busy to make homemade sauce, buy ready-made versions like Ragu or Bravo) 1-2 cups of grated mozzarella cheese (depending on how big your crust is) Another kind of cheese: I use slices of individually wrapped American sliced cheese, or you can also use grated Eden cheese Toppings: Vegetables like finely diced tomatoes, mushrooms, olives, zucchini, etc. (the smaller they’re cut up, the faster they cook) Meat like bits of ham, ground beef, bacon, sausage pieces, pepperoni, or even canned tuna Preheat oven to 450°F and bake for 12-15 minutes or until crust is golden brown. Possible combinations:
Ground beef, diced tomato and cheese (crumbled Feta is usually a hit) 2. Ham and cheese 3. BLT: Bacon/Turkey bacon, shredded lettuce and diced tomato with lots of cheese 4. Tuna with finely diced zucchini 1.
With toppings, it’s really up to your family’s tastes and imagination.

Honey Yogurt Crunch Parfaits The perfect after-school snack! Kids love making (and eating) this if you prepare the toppings in small bowls and let them do the layering themselves. Yogurt is great for kids because of the good bacteria and calcium. Start with plain or vanilla yogurt, and create layers with the honey and fruit. For extra crunch, you can also add toasted almonds, crushed graham crackers or cashew brittle. INGREDIENTS: 2 cartons plain or vanilla yogurt Honey 1 cup chopped fruit (strawberries, bananas, mangoes, melon and pineapple work well) ½ cup toasted almonds, chopped finely or graham crackers or nut brittle PREPARATION: 1. Prepare the ingredients
in individual small bowls. 2. Use sundae or parfait glasses if you can, otherwise an ordinary clear drinking glass will do. 3. Let the children do the layering until the glass is full. 4. Experiment with different fruit combinations to see what each child likes best. Tip:
For homemade vanilla yogurt, simply add ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract and ½ teaspoon muscovado sugar or honey to a carton of plain yogurt.

Marvelous Mac and Cheese As easy as it may be to open a box of instant mac and cheese, know that food made from scratch is always better. If you have the time or the help, whip up a batch of homemade mac and cheese for your hungry monsters to take to school or to enjoy at dinnertime. Serves 4. INGREDIENTS: 2½ cups of low-fat milk 2 cups of uncooked elbow macaroni 2 tablespoons of butter 3 tablespoons of all-purpose flour ½ teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon dry mustard (you can buy this in yellow tins from specialty food stores) or 1 teaspoon regular prepared mustard 1 cup grated cheddar cheese plus ¼ cup for topping the mac & cheese PREPARATION: 1. Cook the macaroni. 2.
Heat the milk and butter over medium heat until butter melts. Slowly whisk in flour, salt and dry mustard, and simmer for a minute, whisking occasionally. When sauce reaches a creamy, smooth consistency, remove from heat. Stir in the 1 cup of cheese until melted. 3. Add the drained, cooked macaroni into the saucepan, and mix until noodles are well coated. Transfer this mixture into a square baking dish, top with additional ¼ cup of cheese, and bake in a pre-heated 375°F oven for about 20 minutes or until the cheese melts and the macaroni reaches a bubbly stage. Let it cool for a few minutes before serving. { JULY-AUGUST 2013 } b c PHILIPPINES

in Hong Kong for 10,” she explains in one breath. “At least when we were in Hong Kong, it was more fun—the cousins could come and visit. We’d go to Manila a lot, since it’s so near. Growing up was fun; I always felt very secure and taken care of.” Like Ria, Luigi also has a banker for a parent. “My mom is into banking in BPI,” he says. “She’s been there for 30 plus years now.” But Luigi admits that growing up a Trillo household meant being in a family that was ‘very into basketball.’ He elaborates, “It’s no secret my father has been with Alaska all these years. Before Alaska, he was a commentator and a basketball analyst in the PBA, so I used to tag along with him. In my younger days, he coached La Salle as well, so ever since, we’ve been exposed to basketball and sports. I never thought that I would end up like this. I knew I’d always be attached to basketball in a certain way, but I just feel truly blessed. It’s funny, because even meeting my wife Ria, she also got into sports. She commentated as a courtside reporter, got into talking about sports,

and she’s grown to love the game.” Ria’s confession, on the other hand, came as a surprise. “I had zero interest in sports when I met Luigi. After I met him, l learned to appreciate it, I was able to speak about it, and sort of make a career out of it. That’s what happened. It’s funny though, because people always ask me, ‘Did you play basketball? How come you know basketball?’ ‘Are you kidding me? Come on!’ It’s really because of Luigi, so I actually have to thank him for my career.” But a career in media was not the first thing on Ria’s mind as a young woman. “I remember at one time, wanting to be a flight attendant. I wanted to be an archeologist, and then I wanted to be bcmag.ph
a doctor,” she explained. “That’s what I studied in Ateneo—I was pre-med, BS Psych. And then after my second year, after Comparative Anatomy, I was thinking, well this is probably not my thing. I could do it and I think I got a ‘B’ or something, which wasn’t bad, but I could see my classmates around me—and these are the people who really eventually became doctors. They were so into their dead cats and sharks, and I just wanted to open it, look at it, label it, finish it, and leave—while they would really stay beyond the four hours of lab, to really bond with their cat. And I’m like, ‘That’s probably not for me.’” To this, we let out some snickers. Ria continues, “My dad would say, ‘The best doctors aren’t the smartest, they’re
the most passionate.’ And I really didn’t feel I had the passion for it. So I wanted to switch to Comm, and I was about to, but then when I looked at everything, I was gonna graduate a semester late. I figured, if wanna do media or something related, then I‘ll do it with a Psych degree. So when I graduated, I thought that I would go into advertising and there were some opportunities there, but I ended up on TV, which is not something I really, really dreamt of. I graduated and was like, ‘I’m gonna take 6 months off. It’s like the cool thing to do ‘cause after this, I’m gonna be working the rest of my life.’ Since I didn’t really wanna take on a full-time job at that time, Jude Torcuato, who’s now the country head of FOX—head of the Philippines/the region—Jude was a JULY-AUGUST 2013 philippines

courtside reporter, and I think he was already producing at that time—he was a friend of ours. He said, ‘You know, they’re looking for a female partner for me to cover the UAAP games. You wanna do it? I know you don’t wanna work full time—this is only twice a week. And you’re just gonna be watching basketball games.’ I was already going out with Luigi since sophomore year in college. So I could speak the lingo, could pretty much understand it—not so much like an expert but definitely more than the average girl, so they tried me out. Sev Sarmenta, I think, was at my audition, or he was executive producer. He said, ‘You wanna do this?’ I said, ‘Yeah, let’s do it,’ and then that was that. I did the MBA, which sort of got my foot in the door for ABS, and then after that, I did Breakfast, and I did entertainment for News Central, and then I became the main anchor for News Central, and then I went back to ANC, which is what I’m doing now.” We then ask her how she and Luigi met, and she explains, “Luigi and I met through a sort of blind date. He knew who I was and I knew who he was, but his cousin, who was my friend from Ateneo, set it up. It wasn’t like a one-onone—it was a party in Urdaneta, and I asked Luigi’s cousin to get two other dates for my two friends. I remember at that party, there was a really long line to the bathroom, so I was just standing there and waiting. He said, ‘You’ve been waiting here?’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah, it’s okay.’ He talked to the person at the front of the line, and then all of a sudden, I was the first to use the bathroom [Kariz interjects: “Will you please just let her cut in, ‘cause I’m trying to go on a date with her!”—This elicits laughter from all of us]. So I thought he was very, very nice; very attentive. Not much time in between, and then it was ‘us.’” When asked about her first impression of her now husband, Ria says animatedly, “Wow, he’s so nice. Is he really this nice? Di ba? All guys put their best foot forward, right? I remember he was, ‘Can I get you water? Can I do this? Can I do that?’ I’m like, c’mon!’”

When it comes to the marriage proposal, Ria admits that it was “no big do, or anything.” She proceeds, “He proposed in my mom’s house, when he was coaching Adamson. I think he had sort of told himself he would propose to me after his first win, and I guess it looked like that season, he wasn’t gonna win—this draws more chuckles from the room—“so he proposed to me in my mom’s den. We came home after the game, and then he wanted to watch the replay. So we were watching and I said, ‘You know, I’m really tired. Can you watch this at home?’ And he went, ‘No no, no! Wait, wait, wait,’ and then he had this whole speech, and he proposed.” Luigi is quick to acknowledge how fortunate he is to have had his wife’s unfailing support through what he calls “darkest days”.
“I was very lucky I had a patient wife with me, because she was very dear to me in terms of my toughest times,” he says candidly. “Those were my darkest days in terms of, ‘Did you wanna keep on with basketball, or did you wanna go somewhere else?’ I didn’t give up on my dream. I realized I had a passion for what I was doing. I was very blessed to have a supportive wife who did not leave my side. My wife and I were looking at what I was earning—nowhere near anything to look forward to. Started out in Alaska, took anything there. It wasn’t like I was spoiled or anything there. The pay was not the priority; I think the investment [was] on my becoming a better coach. I think people don’t realize you need to invest. And that investment, I think, is paying off now, because [I] coached everywhere—high school, MBA, PBL, D-League. Those things gave me my toughness right now.”

Luigi also talks about working alongside the legendary Tim Cone, saying, “His knowledge for the game is unparalleled. He was a devoted coach, and he had so much passion. Realizing now, I’m a young coach, I’ve been in the league as an assistant 14 years, 13 years. This is my first year as a head coach. But for him to do it that long and be successful—it was just a joy to watch. I really treasure those moments that I was his assistant helping him. I loved our brainstorming in terms of scouting, and decision-making in improving teams. I thought it would never end. Things happen, but I look at those times when we worked together as fond memories, and I learned a lot. Obviously, I’ve learned from Mr. [Wilfred] Uytengsu [Jr.]. With Fred, I’m very thankful and I feel blessed that he’s the guy mentoring me now. He’s very corporate. I was also fortunate to have my time with Tim. I don’t think a lot of guys would be in this situation I’m in. I was the youngest assistant coach at 22, and I feel blessed that I’m the youngest coach right now in the PBA.” Luigi points out that being a coach brings with it a unique set of challenges his wife and kids have to face. “A coach’s

life is not the best,” Luigi admits. “It’s nice when you’re winning, but it’s not all the time. You’ve got other teams vying for that. There are so many opportunities to win, and there are also so many opportunities to fail. It’s how you deal with those failures. It’s really communication. It’s letting them know before things happen. Forewarned is forearmed. You gotta make sure that ‘Hey, this is what happens, it’s an important time for me; I need you guys not to be an extra problem; I’m gonna be a little bit on the edge this next 3 weeks. You need to know that, so you know where I’m coming from.’ When the communication lines are open, the relationship is stronger and the understanding is better. But if there’s no communication, then there’s no understanding. Another thing also is the love that goes with that, because you have to be patient. If you’re a coach’s wife, you have to be patient, because you become second.” He is quick to add though, that bcmag.ph

once basketball season is over, he turns his attention completely to his family. “When I don’t have basketball, I drop everything,” the champion coach says. “It’s funny how I’m the one looking for it. I’m the one looking for my family, to bring them out, to go to movies. I’ve tried to stay away from the limelight. So if Ria goes to work at night, instead of going out, or trying to be seen and stuff, I’ve realized as I grow older and I’m more mature, there are things that are important to me: time with my kids. I’d rather go to the mall and make sure that if it’s a chance to get them something they like, watch a movie, or experience something—that’s something I cherish. Even with Ria, I try to find quality time. Quality time doesn’t mean us as a family.
I think it’s important that it’s just her and myself. Even she doesn’t understand that. But I think now, she gets it a bit. You have time for you and your family. You also have time for her side, and then I have time for my side. You need time alone. You need time with friends. But there also has to be balance, so to me that’s important. Even if it’s corny, even if it’s you being tired because you’re so used to a routine, I think it’s nice once in a while that you can do something— go to a fancy restaurant, go to a new place, experience something together. I think those bonds really solidify us as a couple. Even my trips, sometimes we’d say, ‘How are we gonna budget this?’ Priorities—we have to pay for the house, the bills, and everything, but sometimes you just have to be bold and say this is important to us as well. Just last week, we budgeted. I’ve got a month before the next practice, but I said this is an opportunity to go with her family to Oslob in Cebu—whale watching. We were thinking Donsol and everything, but Oslo was nice. It was a little bit pricey, but I said, ‘When are these times gonna happen again?’ And I said, ‘Let’s do it!’ And we did.” When it comes to dividing parenting duties, Luigi explains,“It’s been a process for us—who wants to be the disciplinarian. I think at the end of the day, we’ve agreed that we don’t contradict each other in front of them. I think kids have the tendency to play each other, you know [if] you can’t get one on one side, it’s the other one. We’ve had our mistakes as well, early on, ‘How can you say no to your only daughter at that time?’ This is always about communication. It’s about discussing it not in front of them, and then having rules and trying to stick by them. As you grow older, you realize you get more familiar with those rules. I think we’ve done a good job overall. I may want something, my wife may not agree on that. The first one that comes in, we don’t, right there, contradict. I think we’ve built a good foundation.” However, Luigi admits that he is a bit of a spoiler at times. “I feel my weakness

as a father is I try to spoil, because you always want to be with them, buy them stuff, and I’ve realized it’s not the best thing. And the grandparents, I’ve realized also, on both sides—they’ve tried to spoil. So tough love is in session, and I think it’s gonna come soon as the growing years come up. But I’m enjoying this time right now. With a 2-year old, 5-year old—how can you not spoil?” Ria seconds this, saying, “He’s probably the good cop. There’s no defined role, but most of the time, he’s pusong mamon. Like when he’s gotten mad, and that’s out, then he’ll be all soft and mushy, ‘Oh okay, let’s go, do what you want.’ That’s really just the way he is. Even when he fights me, he’s like that. He loves spending time with the kids, and he does like a lot of the roughhousing and the play, which is great—really important for kids—I mean not just boys, but the girls also. He likes taking
them out, to movies, to the mall. When he has a game, he wants everyone there. It was nice because this conference was over the summer, so the kids were there almost every game. And Mikel is like, he cannot miss a game. During the summer, he was going to a lot of practices with Luigi. It’s really cute. I forget that he goes to practice with Luigi so much, ‘cause we go to the game and he’s there, and all the Alaska players are giving him high-fives.” As parenting styles do differ in married couples, Ria explains that she prefers being hands-on in terms of the deeper, more important things in life, like teaching her children lessons. “I’m hands-on, and I’m not hands-on,” she tells us. “I’m very dependent on the yayas for the feeding, the bathing, the diaper changing, and all that stuff. But when it comes to school work, or discipline, or a life lesson,
or even just spending time together, then definitely, that’s where Luigi and I are.” She admits she shares this trait with her husband, saying, “Luigi’s not a diaper-changing dad either. I think very few are, unless they’ve lived in the States and had no choice. I guess you could say I’m not a diaper changing mom either (which gets everyone giggling anew). I’m still breastfeeding—I breastfed all of them. Rocio for about 6 months; Mikel for 5 ‘cause we left; Raquel—I told Luigi when I was pregnant with her, ‘We’re not going abroad. We’re not going on any trips. I’m not leaving this baby anymore,’ because that’s how I stopped breastfeeding the first two, because we always had somewhere to go. So I breastfed her pure ‘til maybe about 7, 8 months, and then she was mixed until about one, almost oneand-a-half. But you know, when they’re just comfort sucking at the end? It was sort of like that. Yun pala I was pregnant na with Xabi, so we really had to stop. Xabi, hopefully we do a year.” What Ria has found to be of immense help in how she deals with their kids are the principles of Kabbalah. “Kabbalah’s connected to all aspects of your life, but I think as a parent, it sort of helped me see the bigger picture,” she explains. “You know, it’s really easy to snap at your kids, but then when you’re interacting with your child reactively, there’s no way that that could be a productive or helpful thing for either of you. I find that speaking to them as an adult is really effective. For young children, what I learned is that, when you speak to them directly, it’s not so much the words that you say, but it’s the energy you’re giving [with] what you say that makes them understand. It’s everything. It’s like your whole consciousness behind what you’re saying. People are put in your life—especially your children and your parents—to teach you something. So oftentimes, if you see something in your child which is annoying, or something you think they shouldn’t be doing, usually that’s something you’re doing that you need to change, otherwise you wouldn’t see it in your child. Like sometimes Rocio

will talk to someone in a way that’s probably not so respectful, and then I’ll be like, ‘Hay, why did she do that,’ and then I’m thinking, ‘Hmm, do I speak to people like that sometimes?’ (Laughs) It makes you see the bigger picture.” With Ria not only studying and practicing the Kabbalistic method, but teaching it as well, she jokes that her mom thinks she’s already Jewish. “There’s a little, sort of a baby Kabbalah course, which I’m teaching,” she relates with a smile. “It’s called Spirituality for Kids. Kids or parents don’t have to be studying Kabbalah to take the class. We do lots of games, and artwork, and stories, and stuff like that, which really help bcmag.ph
teach them lessons, which are basically spiritual lessons that will help them throughout their whole life.” And on the topic of other aspects of being a parent, our editor Kariz asks Ria, “Why are you so fit? Can you please tell me it’s genetics?” to which we share a round of laughter. Ria replies, “I think it’s partially luck. I‘m just naturally not a big eater, put it that way. I don’t exercise a lot, which is why I try to eat the right things, ‘cause I feel like you have to do at least one. If you don’t eat healthy, you should work out. If you don’t work out, then at least eat the right thing. We started juicing, and try to do a lot of salads and stuff like that. I really like the ‘healthy types’ of food.
I like Japanese, Mediterranean—those are naturally healthy foods. I started working out maybe a couple of weeks ago, doing TRX. I don’t really like exercising, and I feel like I have to take a class, ‘cause if you’re gonna send me to the gym on my own, forget it. And of course, breastfeeding helps a lot.” For her own children, Ria’s hope is simple, but profoundly beautiful. “I think that all people come to the world with a particular purpose, and not everyone achieves that purpose,” she says. “My wish for them is to achieve whatever their spiritual purpose is supposed to be. As long as they’re connected to a power that’s higher than them, then I’m happy.” bc

RELA X AN D U N W IN D Now Eat This! Diet (Rocco Dispirito, 2011)
In this book, #1 New York Times Bestselling Author Rocco Dispirito offers a revolutionary lifestyle program that lets us eat more food while losing weight quickly. The best part is that we don’t have to starve and deprive ourselves of the food we love to eat. We still get to eat 6 meals a day. Losing weight has never been so delicious and easy, especially for busy moms like us. “You can use this book every day of your life to take care of the most precious thing that you have ever inherited: your body. When you take care of your body, your body will take care of you.” Other Books Mother Nurture (Stephanie Hirsch, 2008) “Children have to have boundaries, but do not knock the poetry out of the soul.”
An inspiring collection of essays and stories that brings together wisdom and advice from the mothers of America’s most successful stars in different industries, this read is a testament of the power of motherhood in molding the children of today into the successful adults of tomorrow. This book pays tribute to the special bond between a mother and her child.
Griffin and Sabine: An Extraordinary Correspondence (Nick Bantock, 1991) “The threads of circumstance that lead to tomorrow are so tenuous that all the fussing and worrying about decisions is futile compared to the pure randomness of existence.”
As the first installment of a fantastical trilogy, Griffin and Sabine follows the quiet, solitary artist Griffin Moss, who begins a correspondence with a woman in a tropical island thousands of miles away. Their story is chronicled through postcards and letters in the book, which are drenched in fascinating artwork in a format that is unique as it is effective. bcmag.ph
Outliers: The Story of Success (Malcolm Gladwell, 2008) “We prematurely write off people as failures. We are too much in awe of those who succeed and far too dismissive of those who fail.”
This insightful book teaches readers of all walks of life to look at success (and successful people) in a new light, and learn why exactly do some people succeed and ultimately become an “outlier”. The story explains that more than just IQ and opportunities, some people achieve success because of their culture, family, generation, and other details of their background.
Tuck Everlasting (Natalie Babbitt, 1975) “For some, time passes slowly. An hour can seem like an eternity. For others, there was never enough. For Jesse Tuck, it didn’t exist.”
This fantasy children’s novel inspired the 2002 Disney film of the same name, that starred Alexis Bledel and Jonathan Jackson. This novel, which was repeatedly lauded as one of the 100 best books for children by several organizations, speaks about the concept of immortality, and how it can be both a blessing and a curse.
Toilet Training without Tears (Charles E. Schaefer, Ph. D. & Theresa Foy DiGeronimo, 1997)
“A warm smile, a hug, a few kind words when your child uses the potty are all that’s necessary to let him know that you are pleased with his progress.”
Potty training is one of the biggest milestones in a child’s development and it is no easy feat. Thankfully, child care expert Dr. Charles E. Schaefer wrote this practical guide book to make the experience easier for everyone through different approaches. With this read, potty training your little one will be no tears and no trauma.
Alchemy of Forever (Avery Williams, 2012) “People are always looking for magic, when the natural world holds true miracles.”
When Seraphina’s boyfriend, Cyrus perfects a method of alchemy that lets them live forever, they spend the next 600 years inhabiting the bodies of other people. But when she realizes that stealing lives was wrong, she runs away from him, only to inhibit Kailey’s body and fall in love with Kailey’s neighbor, Noah. others and babies came together in a one-of-a-kind interactive exhibit held by the number one brand recommended by moms, Philips Avent on strategic locations, at SM Southmall on April 20, and SM Megamall on May 18. The event featured a variety of activities celebrating the different stages of motherhood through three exhibit areas–Baby Bump for expecting moms, New Baby for mothers with young ones aged 0 to 18 months, and Growing Baby for those with toddlers. Baby Bump featured a Belly Cast art exhibit by Mimsy Jundis of Mamaste Art, and the belly cast included Neva Santos, Chiara Datu, Isobelle Camacho, Barni Alejandro, Ayse Trifyllis, and Polly Fong. The New Baby exhibit featured a breastfeeding area with an educational booth that talked about parts of the breast and lactation. Parents and their children also enjoyed making wonderful bib art. Meanwhile, the Growing Baby featured makeovers from Philips and Goody’s beauty experts, while parents enjoyed fruit and vegetable smoothies from the juice bar. Parents were also treated to discussions by pediatrician and breastfeeding advocate Dr. Anthony Calibo of St. Luke’s and Medical Center, Dr. Georgia Roa-Remulla (who talked about proper oral care for babies), and Michelle Aventajado of YogaKids (who talked about yoga for kids), Teacher Jeannie Castillo of Kinder Musik, and Philips Avent brand ambassador, Maricel Laxa-Pangilinan. This event was presented by Philips Avent and Baby Company, and was sponsored by Aprica, BC Magazine, Goody, Chef’s Classics, Mamaste Art, Philips and Stanley Ong Photography.

celebrating creativity and endless possibilities
h
eld at the Rockwell Tent from May 3 to 5, the annual Make Your Own Havaianas (MYOH) event, which is now on its 8th year, showcased the innate artistry in everyone as it kicked off the brands biggest design collaboration open to the public—You + Havaianas. Moreover, 20 entries will be uploaded online for public voting and the winning entry will be featured as a Limited Edition style of the muchloved brand’s 2014 Collection. Because creativity has always been one of the brand’s distinct values, Havaianas has collaborated with creative icons worldwide, including Australian surf star Luke Stedman, Italian fashion house Missoni, and celebrity moms Courtney Cox, Nina Garcia, Rebecca Romjin, and BC US’ cover mom, Tori Spelling. The event was attended by several celebrity moms such as Bianca Valerio and Tessa Prieto-Valdes (BC’s Most Beautiful Moms), Rissa MananquilTrillo, Lexi Schulze, Maricel Laxa-Pangilinan, and Delamar Arias, among others.

ost look at Australian actor Russell Crowe as a macho man. Having starred in action films such as Gladiator, L.A. Confidential, and American Gangster, plus the reputation of a bad temper (see ‘flying telephone’)— it is difficult to imagine him being anything but a guy’s guy. We’ve witnessed him swashbuckling in a remake of Robin Hood, with director and pal, Ridley Scott in 2010, and as Inspector Javert in the star-studded Les Misérables last year, and in the recently-released, Zack Snyder-directed Man of Steel, in which he plays Superman’s biological father, Jor-El. However, all those controversial perceptions disappear when one is reminded that he is a loving dad to Charles (who turns 10 this December) and Tennyson (who turned 7 this July), his sons with Australian actress and singer Danielle Spencer. Looking at the photo above, the Academy-award winner shows us a softer side, and doesn’t mind looking wacky as Tennyson puts a dog beanie on his head. Are you not entertained? bc
