Thrilla in Manila There is nothing more exciting than planning a party for your loved ones, so imagine getting to plan a shindig for your firstborn’s birthday during Halloween season?

It’s like Christmas, two months in advance. Which it is, in the eyes of my family, at least.

On October 28, I get to have a child with double digits for her age. What a big number it must be for her. With a little luck, Sabina will still be her child-like self for a few more years—here’s hoping I won’t ever have to drag her off a wrecking ball while she’s singing her heart out in the buff, or…twerking. Even just typing that word gives me a migraine. And so, birthday wishes are in order: Sabina, remember that we, your family, will always be lurking behind you. We love you too much, and will try to protect you always. May you always have the tenacity to pursue your dreams. Remember that each step of reaching that goal may not always be exciting (oftentimes, it’s a hard and dull climb) and that you may need to be pushed back sometimes in order to get ahead in life—this will make sense in the future.

Our unanswered prayers are usually the ones that mean the most—God really knows what we want and need more than what we think we do. I always thought having a thrilling career in New York would be my ultimate goal—but God knew what would make me happiest is seeing the three of you grow up, everyday.

May you be blessed with enough good fortune that you never have to sell neither your soul, nor your body, nor your principles. If you decide to become a baker, artist, or whatever, be the best you can be. You have to start practicing now, and if you don’t get it right, remember there is always another chance while you are alive, even when you think you’ve run out of chances.

On the topic of loved ones, to say our cover brood is my friends is sincerely an understatement. The Sottos are family to us, and I could not be prouder to have

them on our pages. This is the second part of our shoot— the first was when our goddaughter, Ondrea, was still in her mom’s tummy. Today, she is walking, talking, and so full of charm and beauty that you can’t help but want to squeeze her. Kiel is a sweet big brother, and ever so handsome as when we first photographed him. Kristine is even more lovely and svelte than ever (that leather skirt is a size small, and looked to be 6 inches bigger so we had to clip and tape it in the back!). Motherhood is really Tin’s calling as she is happiest around her little ones. She is kind, generous, and intuitive. Oyo is her equally dashing counterpart—always quiet but extremely funny and principled when you get to know him. He is the perfect man for their household, and is always either at home, work, the gym, or at a prayer group with his family.

I hope you see the effort we put into our Halloween DIY foods and costumes. I made my first ever cake on the fly during the photo shoot. It turned out delicious, and was a good centerpiece for the spread. Our team (and my girls) had a blast shopping, prepping, and creating every single labor of love here. In fact, we love it so much that we are going to re-create it for our Halloween Kidstock! Stay tuned for that, as we would love to have a freak-fest (GP, naturally) with all of you.

This month is also geared towards breast cancer and ADHD Awareness, and I hope we are able to shed some light on these topics through our stories.

Since it’s our anniversary issue, please let me also thank everyone we’ve worked with and read BC that has made our 3 years in the Philippines a glorious ride. We look forward to making more memories with you all.

“you never know where your style is from. But in one moment you can become a prisoner of your own style, because your style is more powerful than you.”

How did you start out?

Before becoming a designer, I wanted to be a painter. My father used to be a contemporary art collector in Spain, so I think that contemporary art has influenced me a lot. And one day, I decided to become a designer, and when I began to work in Spain, it was the period of La Movida. It was a very, very fine time to work in Madrid after the death of General Franco. It was a very active, and very free movement. There was a lot of nightlife. So I decided to become a designer. I began with the women’s collection.

When was this?

In the beginning of the ‘80s. People thought I was a little bit loco, a lot crazy, because I was doing dresses with wings and strange forms—like having hula hoops. But little by little, they got used to my style. A very big department store, El Corte Ingles, decided to make a contract with me, and I began to work for El Corte Ingles, which is one of the most important department stores in the world. And suddenly they said to me, “You have to do a children’s collection.”

Just like that?

Yes, so I said that I was not happy at all. I was thinking that they asked me to do that because they did not believe in my women’s collection. So we did a little collection for the children’s department in El Corte Ingles, and it was the most tremendous success I’ve had in my life. The other nice thing at that moment was that I had a daughter who was 3 years old. So it was very good for me, because it was much more fun when you have a daughter when you design things for children.

I tried a lot of the dresses I did on her.

People in Spain then were very afraid of my things. They wanted them, but

they were afraid of them—because of the colors and shapes. But they always want the best for their children, so that’s why they bought an extraordinary amount of dresses. We would come in with racks in El Corte Ingles, and they’d disappear in one week. In the history of El Corte Ingles, they never saw a phenomenon like that. In Spain, even if a woman spends very little on herself, she spends a lot on her children, and the big concurrence of Spain was always Italy. Italy is a very Catholic country with lots of children.

So, we began to go to a fair called Pitti Bimbo in Italy. The first time we went to Pitti, we were already invited to do a

job, is the job itself. It’s not about becoming a multimillionaire. Everyday, you have lots of problems, but the only thing you have to realize is that problems are not the end of the world.

And it’s always positive when you have a problem and you can work past the problem.

But this wasn’t under El Corte Ingles anymore?

Why did you choose hearts and clouds, and all these bold prints?

No, it was always Agatha Ruiz. Only the clothes collection was an exclusive at El Corte Ingles. From the very first moment, it was always in my name.

So it was a success in other countries in Europe, but now we are coming to the United States, and it’s quite difficult because, I don’t know, maybe they think it’s really strange. I don’t think it’s so strange.

I think I have a very personal style, and you never know where your style is from. But in one moment you can become a prisoner of your own style, because your style is more powerful than you. Sometimes when you build a style then you no longer have the power to decide.

fashion show. Little by little, it became a big success. Now we are selling perhaps more in Italy than in Spain—we are in 600 different shops. We also have all kinds of different things for babies—from shoes, socks, swimwear to cribs. We even did a little collection of books.

It’s picking up a lot now.

I know that [in the U.S.] the baby’s press is helping me a lot. But apart from the press, I have spoken with some of the department stores and they think that it’s very crazy. I don’t think it’s crazy, because babies and children need a lot of color. I think everyone needs a lot of color.

That’s wonderful. Because even in countries where I don’t sell a lot, they say, “That’s Agatha Ruiz de la Prada’s style.” In Spain, we had a big problem with copies, some years ago. They even put my name and the logo.

Very true. Looking back, how much money did you have to start with for the business?

Yes, because the first 10 years or more are always about building. And sometimes a lot of people in business are not so patient.

I believe in a lot of partnerships. I have had more than 200 different partnerships with companies or other designers, architects, or painters. And I think you always learn something, no? Now they call it “co-branding,” which is one of the most interesting things you can do as a designer. About the Absolut people, I think they approached me, and Swatch is one of the best companies ever—they can do a product with as much creativity and technology at a democratic price. And that’s what I would like to do with my products—to be very avant-garde, very creative, and innovative from a technical point of view, and very democratic in the prices.

Were there ever any low points in your career?

Who are your closest friends in the industry?

There are always a lot of low points.

When you design your children’s line, what goes into your mind?

I think the children’s line is very easy to design. Too easy, sometimes. I think children are also much better clients. I try to do dresses that are half for play, and half a dress. If you have a child who is expecting a present from you, then you give her a T-shirt, she’s going to lose interest. But if you give her a T-shirt that has the most amazing print with a little doll inside, that makes her have a lot of imagination. And also, if I do the dresses of children in my size, I will go crazy over them. I tell you, 99%, I will wear them. It’s like when I do my women’s collection, I am one of the few designers in the world who wears her own creations. When you see other designers, they do a very crazy fashion show, and at the end, they go out with a white T-shirt and jeans.

What is the most exciting part of your career?

Everyday is absolutely exciting, because I am very enthusiastic about every little detail. This year, we want to open a store in China. In some days, they are so magical that they give you an enormous amount of energy. Two weeks ago, we did a very big exhibition in a museum in Barcelona. And the curator of that exhibition is the director of the museum of fashion in Paris.

Now we are preparing in a little city in the center of Spain—Burgos—an exhibition of 25 years of work, with everything which are not just dresses. It’s going to be very interesting—the shoes, the perfumes, all the objects we have done in 25 years.

What are your plans for your company?

If I come to open that shop in China, then I expect that my children, as you said before, will come to help me.

You’ve been with Pedro Jota, the editor-in-chief of El Mundo, for years, and bcmag.ph

it’s great because he has his own career, and you have yours. Living with someone who has a different life from mine is very exciting. So when I arrive home, it has nothing to do with my work. And for him, it’s also the same. Because if I were a very political analyst journalist, it will be strange to live together.

And you have 2 children?

My son is turning 20, and my girl is 16 (Editor’s note: As of date of interview).

They are both teenagers. It’s really interesting because in the fashion industry, the most important group of people are the teenagers. Because when you are a teenager, it is the moment in your life when you need fashion. And if you understand what the teenagers need, you can do the most incredible things.

Do they wear your clothes?

No, because normally when you are a teenager you want to always to kill your father and mother, no? (Laughs) Do they want to become a designer?

No, my girl wants to become a politician. And my son wants to become a historian and study ancient history.

Who will manage Agatha?

I don’t know, but I think all that is temporary. Because when you are a teenager, you never know what’s going to happen. It’s the moment when you try to find yourself. And after that, I hope they will find me, and thank me a little bit. bc

October is the awareness month for ADHD—a non-discriminatory, brain-based medical disorder affecting people of every age, gender, IQ, and religious and socioeconomic background. The good news, Dr. Gelb says, is that many such disorders are preventable. When children are 6

The doctors say sleeping problems are serious and could very well require medical consultation. Additionally, they offer athome, do-it-yourself tips for children and adults to promote better breathing during sleep, which is when obstruction typically manifests.

Promote nasal breathing.

Prevent obesity.

Sadly, many people who suffer from breathing problems don’t even realize it’s a problem until something serious occurs, such as a car accident.

Obstruction often occurs in the nasal cavity. An easy way to experience deeper sleep and potentially curtail a developing problem is by using nasal spray. Apply the spray 15 minutes before bedtime.

Excessive weight and obesity are the most common causes of sleep apnea—pauses in breathing or shallow breaths while sleeping.

Obesity has more than doubled among children and tripled among adolescents in the past 30 years, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The best medicine for prevention is a healthy diet—fewer processed foods; less sugar, salt and fatty snacks; and regular exercise.

Create an ideal sleeping environment.

Turn your bedroom into a sleeper’s paradise with cozy, high thread-count sheets, new pillows, soft lighting, and soothing noises from a sound machine. Add to these aesthetics a couple helpful, practical tools. If you tend to grind your teeth when sleeping, a dental night guard can help you awake refreshed and with no jaw pain. Eyeshades help people who relax best in complete darkness.

If these home remedies are not proving effective, it’s time for a doctor to screen a patient’s tonsils and adenoids, which may be obstructive and need to be removed, Dr. Gelb says. Then, myofunctional therapy will help assist palatal expansion for better breathing, he says. bc

hen infertility strikes, it can be a massive source of stress for couples, and many are too quick to assume it’s a female issue.

Alarmingly, the average sperm count for adult males has decreased by 50 percent since 1938 and is currently declining at a rate of 2 percent each year, according to a study in the British Medical Journal. Stress, exposure to environmental toxins and diets deficient in key vitamins and minerals are likely to blame.

“It’s a fact that one in six couples will have difficulty conceiving, but many aren’t aware that almost half the time,

it’s the male who is the cause of the problem,” said fertility expert, Dr. Amos Grunebaum. “When couples address this issue, it’s been my experience that the woman is the first to see a specialist to determine her fertility status. It’s a little more difficult to get the man on board with doing the same thing. Some men just don’t want to acknowledge that they may have a fertility problem.

As such, they are more reluctant to get tested and I have seen a lot of men delay seeing a specialist or even avoid it completely.”

“From my experience, low sperm count is one of the primary reasons that couples have a difficult time conceiving,” said Dr. Grunebaum, also a medical health advisor for Fairhaven Health. “Quite simply, the fewer sperm a man produces, the lower the likelihood that one will successfully fertilize the egg.”

Treatments for male infertility typically include lifestyle changes, vitamin, mineral or herbal supplementation, prescription medication, or even surgical procedures.

But before any of that can begin, the couple has to be able to communicate and agree to take action.”

“A diet rich in antioxidants such as Vitamins C, E, and Zinc can go a long way in improving sperm health. Exercising regularly plus limiting caffeine, alcohol, and tobacco intake can also help a great deal,” he added.

obert Bernardo knows the stigma of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), and he wouldn’t wish it on his worst enemy.

What’s worse is that the numbers of children being diagnosed are rising at an unprecedented rate. According to the Centers for Disease Control, a million more kids had a parent-reported ADD diagnosis in 2007 compared to 2003 in the U.S., a 22 percent increase in 4 years. More than 4.1 million had a current diagnosis in 2007 and 2.7 million were taking medication for the disorder.

Bernardo, who went from growing up with ADD to authoring his first book, Johnny Paradise, believes that the stigma of ADD does not have to be an impediment in the lives of those who are diagnosed. While living with ADD can be challenging, Bernardo believes it only makes overcoming those chal-

lenges more rewarding.

“I’ve lived with ADD for 55 years,” he said.

“I have it and I passed it to my children, so I am intimate with both sides of the ADD equation. I know what it is to live with it as a patient, and I know what it is to raise children who have it. The odd thing is that I have no problem with either. Some elements of life are made more difficult by ADD, but it does not make achievement and success impossible. My issue is how others can sometimes treat it as an excuse or a reason why they and their kids do not achieve.

I think that’s the wrong approach, and it only fuels the stigma surrounding ADD. I believe that a healthy attitude, forbearance, and perseverance can overcome any of the obstacles bcmag.ph

Bernardo is living proof, having just published his first novel, with several more on the way. For him, the novels are as much about telling good stories as they are about making a statement.

“It took me five years to write my first book,” he added. “But I finished it.

Without ADD, maybe it would have taken five months, but that doesn’t

matter. There are people without ADD who struggle for years to write their books, but never finish. I made it to the finish line, even though no one would have faulted me for giving up

the dream. My point is that anything is possible. ADD can be a hindrance, but it doesn’t have to be a showstopper. The secret is to discard the stigma, forget the people who say you’ll never be able to fulfill your dreams, and embrace only the words and wishes of those who support you. Stop looking to others for inspiration. Find the inspiration inside yourself, and pilot your own ship. If you want it bad enough, you can make it happen.”

ADD and ADHD

What is ADHD and how does it differ from ADD? Attention-deficit disorder (ADD) is the term previously used to describe children who find it hard to pay attention, but are not highly impulsive or hyperactive, while ADHD (Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) is the umbrella disorder in which ADD belongs to.

According to Dr. Steven Kurtz of the Child Mind Institute, one can think of ADHD as having three

scales—inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity.

Children who are diagnosed with ADHD or ADD are often rated using these scales. Because the symptoms of this disorder may well persist into adulthood and there is no cure for it to this day, it is important for parents to be aware on how to deal with children with these disorders as they grow. Here are some tips on how to help your child, and your family, cope with this disorder:

Be open and communicate properly.

Break it down to basics, and be organized.

Kids who have ADHD or ADD may not completely understand what they're going through, and may not be aware that they are acting differently from their peers. This might cause problems at school, so make sure to explain to your child that while what he has makes him different, it does not make him less of a person than his peers.

When dealing with a child with ADHD, it's best to simplify things for him or her. If you're offering him a snack, ask him if he wants fruit or yogurt, and avoid too many options so that he isn't overwhelmed. Make his playroom and study area as organized as possible. Turn off the TV and keep away toys and video games during homework time to help him focus on his tasks. Keep his things in the same place every day—for example, a schoolbag may be placed on a chair by his door or desk, so he will always remember that area for his bag.

Be supportive.

Some children who have ADHD and/or ADD may have learning disabilities, problems with understanding and communicating, anxiety disorders, depression, conduct disorder, Tourette syndrome, and a string of other disorders that is linked to ADHD/ ADD. Make sure that you and your family are able to address his needs accordingly, by going to the doctor and seeking advice about medication, tests, and behavioral therapy, among other options. Make sure you're ready with information on patient and family history as well.

Connect with your school teacher, administrators, and counselors.

If they are already aware of your child's condition, they can better help him deal with his tasks in school, or address concerns in the classroom. Get in touch with DepEd for special programs under their Special Education Division to find out the best options for your child. bc

reast Cancer Awareness Month has been one of the most successful campaigns to raise public awareness in recent history. Unfortunately, in terms of successfully reducing breast-cancer mortality, the results have been mixed, which has caused fierce debate among doctors, researchers, non-profit groups,

“Embedded in the message driving the campaign every October includes instruction to women to strongly consider getting screened for breast cancer, which is often asymptomatic during the early stages, in the hopes of finding cancer before it metastasizes,” says cancer psychotherapist Dr. Niki Barr, author of

“Debate over the efficacy of screenings has arisen as new studies reveal possible shortfalls: self-examinations haven’t been proven effective; younger women experience false positives due to denser breast tissue, as well as missed positives, despite clinical examinations; and rebcmag.ph

If you find anxious thoughts repeating themselves in your mind, take out some index cards and a pen and write them down, one by one, one per card. When you’ve written them all down, try to identify which one thought started the chain reaction. Then find the thought that came next. Continue until you have each thought in order. Now, go back to the first thought and write down a new thought that does not make you feel anxious. When the first thought comes to mind, substitute it with the second thought. Continue through the list until you have positive, empowering thoughts for each negative, anxious one.

Release painful feelings and then let them go: Writing down painful

thoughts and feelings through journaling is an excellent way of exorcising them. Some people find rereading what they’ve written can be helpful, but others hesitate to use this tool for fear someone will find it and read their private thoughts. For those people, Barr suggests an extra measure of release: shred the pages while focusing on “letting go” of those feelings.

Give your mind respite by escaping through music and meditation:

Music is a tonic for many things: It can help us relax, lift our spirits, provide an escape from anxious thoughts and the here and now. Always have favorite CDs easily accessible (or load your iPod or iPhone with all of your favorite, uplifting tracks) so you can escape with music whenever you need to. Meditation CDs are available to help you learn how to meditate and to provide guided imagery for meditation, which is scientifically proven to trigger soothing chemical changes in

he idea of a happy and meaningful life has become unnecessarily complicated in some circles, says author and certified positive psychology coach Lynda Wallace, who left a high-powered executive career with Johnson & Johnson to pursue her real passion—helping individuals and groups achieve greater happiness and suc-

achieving goals The essential elements of a happy life are not mysterious, she says.

Research shows that the happiest people do four basic things that make the difference: they focus on what is good and positive in their lives; cope effectively with life’s inevitable challenges; develop strong relationships; and pursue meaningful goals.

“We can all become happier by putting our efforts into these areas,” Wallace says.

One of the first steps we can take is to get past some of the common misperceptions about happiness that can stand in our way. Wallace offers these four examples.

Happiness is about getting the big things right.

It’s natural to think that if we were suddenly rich, beautiful, and living on the beach somewhere, we’d be happy. But that type of good fortune turns out to have a surprisingly small impact on happiness. The happiest people are most often not those in the most enviable circumstances, but those who cultivate positive emotional outlooks and actions.

So how can we do it? “Take concrete steps to practice optimism, gratitude, kindness and self-compassion in your everyday life,” says Wallace. “The cumulative effect of those everyday choices can have a tremendous impact on how you experience your life.”

Happy people suppress negative emotions. Happy people actually experience sadness, grief, worry, and other so-called negative emotions nearly as frequently as unhappy people do. The difference is what happens when those feelings occur. Happier people are generally able to experience negative feelings without losing hope for the future. “They give themselves permission to feel sad, angry, or lonely, but they remain confident that things will get better. As a result, their sadness progresses into hope and action rather than regressing into anxiety and despair.”

Pursuing happiness is self-centered. The strongest of all conclusions drawn by researchers into emotional well-being is that our happiness is determined more by our relationships with other people than by any other single factor.

The happiest people build their lives around good, trusting relationships. “If other priorities are getting in the way of your relationships,” says Wallace, “take steps to shift the balance back to where it will really make a difference.”

“I’ll be happy when I achieve my goals.” Have you ever noticed that when someone wins the Super Bowl or an Academy Award, or when you achieve a long-sought ambition, that wonderful sense of accomplishment and happiness seems to fade faster than you’d expect? “That’s just the way our brains work,” says Wallace. “Committed goal pursuit is one of the keys to a happy life, but most of the happiness we get from striving for goals comes while we’re making progress toward them, not after we achieve them. That’s why it’s so important that we choose goals that are in sync with what we love and value, and that we make a conscious effort to enjoy them along the way.”

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Cut your orange crepe paper into circles around 10 inches in diameter. Cut the short end of your crepe paper 1 cm thick. This will create a string of green crepe paper. 2. Take half a handful of assorted candy or chocolate (around 5 to 7 pieces, depending on the size) and wrap it with white Japanese paper. Roll it gently in your hands to create a circular shape. 3. Place this on top of 2 orange crepe papers (cut into circles). Take the edges of the crepe paper to form a tiny circular bag. 4. Twist the ends of the crepe paper until it looks like a pumpkin. Take some glue on one finger and spread it on the base of the twist, up to the tip. 5. Ingredients Cake: 2 2/3 cups all-purpose flour 1/4 cup cocoa powder 3/4 cup, 1 tablespoon granulated sugar 1/3 cup light brown sugar 2 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 3 eggs 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 1/2 cup coconut oil 3/4 cup unsalted butter, melted and cooled 1 1/3 cups cold water Icing: 6 ounces milk or semi-sweet chocolate 1 cup, 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened or at room temperature 1 3/4 cups confectioners’ sugar, sifted 1 tablespoon vanilla extract Preparation Cake: 1. Preheat

your oven to 350°F while lining and buttering the bottom of 2 8-inch cake pans. 2. In a large bowl, mix together the flour, cocoa, sugars, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs and vanilla until blended well. 3. In another mixing bowl, beat together the melted butter and coconut oil using an electric mixer. If by hand, do the same strokes over and over. Beat in the water. 4. Add the dry ingredients all at once and with mix together, using slow speed. Add in the egg mixture and blend again until well-combined. Once done, pour the mixture into the prepared tins. 5. Bake the cakes for 45 to 50 minutes, or until you stick a toothpick in and it comes out clean.

Take them out of the oven and let sit for 15 minutes on a wire rack. Turn the cakes out on the rack to cool completely.

Fudge icing: 1. Melt the chocolate

in the microwave for two to three minutes on medium heat. Or for a ‘healthier’ approach, melt chocolate in a bowl placed on top of a pan with about 1/2 inch of simmering water. If you’re using chocolate blocks, it’s recommended that you chop it up into pieces and heat it in the microwave on low for about a minute. Let cool slightly. 2. In a separate bowl, beat the butter using a mixer until soft and creamy. Add the sifted confectioner’s sugar and beat again until mixture is light and fluffy. Slowly add the vanilla and chocolate, and mix together until everything is glossy and smooth.

3. Take a 1/3 of the icing and use it to sandwich the middle of the cake. Ice the top and sides using the rest of the icing, with a rubber spatula.

Beheaded and Galacticupcakes Add a cryptic charm to your favorite cupcakes with these decorative tips.

Ingredients alien cupcake decors skeleton head mold red and green food coloring white chocolate salted caramel cupcakes Preparation 1. Bake your salted caramel cupcakes according to your go-to recipe. You can also opt to order from your favorite bakery, to save you time. 2. For the Galacti-cupcakes, just take your alien cupcake decors and stick them on top of each cupcake. 3. For Beheaded, melt your white chocolate on a stovetop pan or in the microwave for about 50 seconds to 1 minute.

4. Immediately mix in the red or green food coloring. Note that some chocolate brands tend to stiffen more rapidly when food coloring is added, so make sure to mix quickly and pour into the skull mold as soon as you’re done mixing in the color. 5. Let sit in the chiller for around 30 minutes or until chocolate is solid and comes off the mold easily. 6. Place the skull head on top of your cupcake and serve.

Rocketboy Materials: 2 empty potato chip canisters 2 plastic or paper cups (rim must be larger than the canister) 2 wooden popsicle sticks or stirrers yellow and orange crepe or Japanese paper black cartolina foil tape glue scissors cutter stapler Instructions: 1. Take your empty potato chip canister and tape the plastic cover so it won’t come off. Wrap the canister with foil using glue and tape.

You don’t need to wrap the silver can bottom. Push down the excess foil on the upper part (plastic cover) of the canister and fasten with tape. Do the same with the other canister. 2. Using a cutter, make two cuts on the side of each potato chip canister. Slide in your popsicle stick or stirrer and attach the other canister on the other end. You can opt to put instant glue on the holes so it can hold the sticks better. Wrap the sticks with foil. 3. Wrap your paper cup in foil using glue and tape.

Cut the excess foil and fold inward on the cup’s rim and use tape to attach inside.

Do the same with the bottom of the cup, folding down and fastening it with tape. 4.

Attach tape to the top rims of the canisters and press down until sturdy. 5. Cut out strips of yellow and orange Japanese or crepe paper. Cut diagonally on one end like you would in making a ribbon. 6.

Alternately put together the strips and fasten them with a stapler. 7. Attach the strips to the bottom of the canister (metal side) using tape. 8. Create straps out of black cartolina by folding an inch thick of the paper four times. Glue it shut and place strips of foil as a design. 9. Instructions: 1. To make your binoculars, take your toilet paper cores and attach them together using two popsicle sticks or stirrers.

Fasten them with glue or tape on one side. 2. Using a cutter, create a “+” on the outer side of each toilet paper core. Tie the two paper bag handles together and insert each end in the “+” hole. Tie a knot on the end of the string, so it will hold the toilet paper core. 3. Take your paper bag and measure it against your child. Once you have an estimate, fold the paper bag in two vertically and cut out a semi-circle for your child’s head. On the front side of the paper bag, cut vertically so it will appear like a vest. 4. Open the paper bag and cut out holes for the sleeves.

Using glue, attach two small brown envelopes on the front side of the vest, to serve as pockets.

Jellyfish Materials: metallic paper sheets in blue and silver leftover gift ribbons in blue, light blue, and purple (or any sea-toned color your child likes; 1 meter long for every ribbon works well) white crepe paper bubble wrap sombrero tape scissors

Instructions: 1. Place the sombrero on top of a spread out sheet of crepe paper, making sure that one side overlaps to the base of cap. Cut the crepe paper so that the other end also extends to the other side of the base. 2. Wrap the sombrero with crepe paper using tape. 3. Create a small hole on the crepe paper where the cap of the sombrero is. Create a cross (+) then proceed to cut each quarter into two. Fold them inwards (into the cap) and fasten with tape. 4. Turn over your sombrero and take your bubble wrap, placing it on the rim of your sombrero, making sure it’s as crumpled and fluffy as it can be. 5. Place a sheet of crepe paper over it and proceed to wrap the sombrero, making sure the bubble wrap stays in the rim area. 6. Keep the metallic paper sheet rolled, but loosen them a bit to make cutting easier. Cut around an inch thick to create curled strips. Do this for both the silver and blue metallic paper sheets. 7. Attach the metallic paper sheets and ribbons alternately around the rim of the hat using tape. You can curl the ends of the ribbons by pulling them against a pair of scissors. Make sure you leave space in front of the hat, so your child can see where she’s walking.

ANGEL Creating an angel costume is quite easy— just pick out a white dress, pair it with white pants or leggings and a cream cardigan and you’re good to go. HALLOWEEN HOLIDAY SAFETY TIPS Let spooky ghosts and evil witches be the only thing you have to worry about this season. Your family’s safety should always be the priority no matter what the occasion. Here are some tips on how to make your holiday a safe, fun, and meaningful one for your whole brood.

1. For colder climates, begin by purchasing a costume that’s at least one size larger to allow for insulating layers underneath. For sunnier days, choose those that have light material that will let the breeze through to avoid overheating.

2. Add reflective tape to costumes and candy buckets.

3. Use safety pins to shorten long costumes and avoid tripping.

4. Sew your child’s name and phone number inside costume in case she or he gets lost.

5. Ask older kids who trick-or-treat by themselves to plan a route and share it with a grown-up.

Set a return time.

6. Instruct kids not to eat treats until a grown-up has inspected them first. Candy that’s already been opened should be tossed. For little kids, trade small, hard candy for soft treats, as these could be a choking hazard.

7. Remove masks when crossing the street, and cross only at corners.

8. Don’t walk between parked cars.

2010, Jerseylicious changed the landscape of reality television. It follows the colorful lives of the owners and crew of Gatsby Salon in Green Brook, NJ, headed by mother-and-daughter team Gayle Giacomo and Christy Pereira.

The salon is also home to a crew of animated hair and makeup artists who also bring an interesting mix of drama and comedy to the table. BC brings you an intimate conversation with the owners of the salon, as they think back to amusing stories, starting out, and motherhood.

Gayle Giacomo Can you tell us a bit more about the history of Gatsby?

G: In 1977, my husband Daniel

[Gianfrancesco] fulfilled his dream of creating his own ideal of a salon experience, opening the world-famous Gatsby Salon. Daniel was always ahead of his time when it came to trends, techniques and tools. His inherent artistic ability is what drove him to new innovations and creative ideas.

His love of creating beauty brought his teachings to television, showcasing hair styles based on face shape and hair texture. He would inform the audience what style worked best with their face shape, as well as how to do their styles at home. He backed up this education with tools that we sold to assist in athome styling, such as the “face framer.”

Daniel also invented artistic tools to help fellow hairdressers with precise cutting techniques. Daniel is recognized as one of the most influential and inspiring educators and artistic hair designers that has trained thousands of hair stylists in the art of hair design and salon management. When Daniel passed away in 1998, he left the legacy of his unique exceptional hair design techniques to me, which still lives on at the Gatsby Salon.

How did your husband influence the success of the salon?

G: Daniel brought his dream to

life by opening Gatsby Salon on the core beliefs that this industry required constant education, impeccable customer care as well as ever-changing décor.

He was a leader, innovator, and a true visionary. Before his passing, the salon was under construction to be Gatsby Salon & Spa. He was always expanding his business to meet his clients’ needs, and at this time, adding spa services did just that.

How was it like raising a family, and having to manage the salon?

G: It was difficult as it is for any working

mother trying to raise children. But we

had a great staff and a wonderful family to help watch Christy and baby Daniel when they were too young to attend school.

Can you tell us about the renovation?

Who designed its interiors?

G: I reinvented Gatsby Salon to reflect

my personal style and vision, all the while continuing to build upon the fundamental values Daniel instilled in Gatsby. For the first two decades of Gatsby Salon’s existence, I was the woman behind the man. Although he had been gone for [more than] ten years, I never felt it was time to step out of his shadow and make it my own. As hard as it was, I knew it was time. This move and renovation was difficult for me, but equally as hard for my staff.

The old location and design will forever be linked to my husband. It was his last gift to them and we had to say goodbye.

Any funny stories about Christy when she was young?

G: When Christy was a little girl,

I

would dress her up depending on the holiday. On Christmas, she was an elf handing out gifts to the staff, and cupid on Valentine’s Day handing out carnations to guests. Christy grew up within the walls of Gatsby, so many of her funny moments were at the salon.

Who is your personal style icon?

G: Elizabeth Taylor. She was sexy

yet sophisticated, elegant, classy, she had it all.

If you had only 5 things you could use for a quick beauty touchup, what would those tools be?

G: Stila’s One Step foundation! It’s

a concealer, foundation, powder, everything all in one…Definitely comes to the rescue. A blow dryer and boar bristle brush to tame my hair.

Describe the moment when you first found out you were picked for the reality series.

G: I was thrilled! I was out with my

girl when the call came in. Who would have ever thought I would have this opportunity to live my husband’s dream of television fame through his salon.

What is your biggest accomplishment as a mother?

G: After my husband died, I had to play

the role of mother and father to my youngest, who was only eight years old.

I juggled running a business and parenting my distraught children. Getting through those years in one piece was my biggest accomplishment.

How did you feel when Christy gave birth to your granddaughter?

G: Unbelievably ecstatic! It’s extraor-

dinary to have a grandchild. Seeing your child have their own; knowing the emotions and joy that she was feeling as I had felt thirty years prior when giving birth to Christy. I was quite emotional during that time. It was even more special to me that my father got to meet her before he passed.

What is the most important lesson you’ve learned as a mother?

G: Selflessness. When you become

a mother, your life isn’t about you anymore. It’s about showing and giving all the love and nurturing you possess to your new bundle of joy. And as they grow, you continue to be selfless, always

putting your children and their needs first. That’s why women are made for this job!

Did you ever think that a salon in NJ could garner this much interest from viewers?

G: Yes, actually. I think people from

NJ are quite interesting, especially for television. We are bold and loud. We are not afraid to share our opinions. So no, I’m not surprised that television audiences would want to watch the mayhem of NJ on television.

made sure she had time for family, no matter how busy she was with work.

My brother and I were her priority at all times. She taught us to dress nicely because the better you look, the better you feel. However, having a hairdresser mom so into fashion was a little difficult to keep up with.

Favorite childhood memory?

C: That would have to be

Christmas mornings with my mom and stepfather, Danny. They were insane! You couldn’t see the floor of the living room because the gifts were piled high. Now as an adult, I think they were crazy because I know all the money that went into it.

How was it like dealing with your pregnancy while filming?

C: As you saw, my feet and legs

swelled quite early on, which presented its obstacles. It was crazy and tiring, but I trucked along and now have those memories through the Jerseylicious episodes. I like to think I was a trooper.

Did you have any unusual cravings during your pregnancy?

C: The only craving was chocolate chip

cookies. Prior to being pregnant, I never really ate sweets, but when I was pregnant with Daniella, I would eat them all the time, for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, if I could. I was obsessed with them.

Describe the moment when you first saw your daughter.

C: I was amazed, just absolutely

amazed. While I was pregnant, I truly did not have a preference whether I had a boy or girl. But when she was born and my husband Danny told me it was a girl and that she was beautiful, perfect, and amazing, I got really emotional. This made me realize that deep down, I must have really wanted a girl.

How did you get back in shape so soon after giving birth?

C: I tried sticking to a healthy diet dur-

ing and after being pregnant, which I think has helped a lot. But I wasn’t allowed to do any exercise right after giving birth to get back into shape, because I had a C-section. So I feel lucky that eating healthy was all that I needed for the weight to come off.

Now, I try to work out once a week to keep tone, but that’s all.

Are there any major lifestyle changes now that you’re a mother?

C: Of course. I try to not let my life

revolve purely around her eating and sleeping schedule, but it’s really hard.

I feel guilty when I don’t keep her on her routine and be at home for naps and whatnot. Danny and I used to go out for dinner every Saturday night, and now we go for the “early bird special” with Daniella before her bedtime. We’ve tried to stay true to ourselves, just modified.

What are your mommy must-haves?

C: The first is my Timi and Leslie dia-

per bag. I need a stylish yet practical bag because you need something big enough to hold all of your baby needs, yet stylish enough to pass as your purse. The second is the DVD player in my car. Daniella hates [riding] in the car! So to keep her occupied and from screaming while I’m trying to drive, the DVD player distracts her.

And I love my Helen Ficalora necklace with Daniella’s initials so I feel her with me when she’s physically not with me.

What do you like shopping for when it comes to Daniella?

C: All girly clothes. I can’t get enough

of them. I love getting her entire outfits from her tops and bottoms to matching headbands and shoes.

How is Danny like as a father?

C: He’s great. Danny has always

been very good with kids, having our niece and nephew as practice. But with Daniella, he’s very hands-on, helping out with everything. We split everything for the most part down the center–from feedings to changings. There is no dirty diaper that he’s afraid of.

What are the best and worst traits you are finding out about yourself now that you’re a mom?

C: I’m extremely organized, which

helps with my everyday life with work, filming, and family. I found that when you become a mom, you can be overly obsessed with little things.

So learning to let things go has definitely been therapeutic and relaxing for me. The hardest thing has been punctuality. I’ve always been early for everything, but now I’m finding that I run about ten minutes behind. Learning to juggle life with child has been good, but an ontime life with child is still difficult to achieve. bc
