Recent Events As I write this, I am inhaling one whole pomelo, one of the nightly rituals I’ve grown accustomed to since we returned to Manila. I’ve also been catching up with Royce (the chocolate), and have had more than my fair share of their Chocolate Wafers. Not to mention, a new found friendship with Patchi. Aside from pleasing my palate, what I love about being here is seeing familiar faces, as I’ve reconnected with family and friends, one of them being Amanda Jacob. I’ve known Amanda since we worked together for our former men’s magazine’s first cover back in 2003. Of course, back then she was still a Griffin, and now we find ourselves in different territory—in the land of playdates, strollers, and planning birthday parties—and we both agree that this is the best time of our lives. I couldn’t be happier that she has met her perfect match in David Jacob, and that their bundle of cuteness, Kieran, is absolutely a ray of sunshine. Speaking of the sun, I am completely excited for summer. After my youngest daughter’s bout with dengue last year, I’m hoping we get to make up for lost beach time. We have a story on activities that our energetic tykes with too much free time can indulge in; two friends’ first-hand experiences with autism and gestational diabetes; and how to avoid seasonal sicknesses (not really a brainbuster, but an ounce of prevention...). Kindly check out our piece on brass artist Michael Cacnio, whose work blows me away everytime. It’s always interesting to meet the people behind and alongside the genius. The talented and beautiful Hoppuses make their Philippine debut with our look back into their California home. See how and where the former Blink 182 frontman dwells with his family. Alrighty then, here’s to an amazing vacation! The moments we get to share with our loved ones, no matter what age they may be, is always fleeting—so I hope you all find time to spend it together. ne of the best things about the Philippines (aside from the fact that the weather seems to be reminiscent of summer for most of the year) is that there are so many activities to enjoy during the kids’ vacation. A prime example is Cagayan Province’s Tuguegarao, where tourists and Filipinos alike travel to witness what we’d otherwise commonly see abroad—raging rivers that flow amidst natural rock formations. While whitewater rafting may be a latecomer into the extreme sports scene in the Philippines, more and more enthusiasts are seeking the distinct rush of gliding through rough waters in one of the country’s discreet northern regions. I spoke with father and daughter, Boy and Anina Favis, who traversed the Chico River in Tabuk, Kalinga (complete with their group of 28, including Boy’s wife, LilyAnn, and his two other kids, Alfonso and Angela), where an extraordinary adventure awaits those who dare. They both agree—these rapids give you a different encounter every single time.
12
b c PHILIPPINES { MAR-APR 2011 }
“When there are rains and storms, the water comes rushing down from the mountains. They move the rocks under, and that changes the flow of the river,” Boy explains. Anina concurs, “It’ll never get boring because even though you go down the same river, it is never the same. The obstacles there, it always changes. Water is never constant.” Boy recalls one of his seven whitewater rafting trips to Tuguegarao, in which he also explored the Callao Cave and went kayaking during his two-day, three part itinerary. He recalls, “When you walk in, it’s like a great, big hall. You can move into, I think, four caverns inside. It’s really beautiful, all with a high ceiling. That’s a good first adventure because it doesn’t scare you.” There’s truly nothing scary about Callao Cave, as its majestic interiors feature breathtakingly gorgeous limestone and other rock formations, including a chapel in one of the chambers. Visitors can marvel at the crevices in the high ceilings that provide dramatic lighting to the mystical
cave. But cave exploration and a quick kayaking trip is just a warm up for the next day’s exploration of the Chico River. The only requirement? Good weather, aqua socks, teamwork, and presence of mind. Aside from the standard helmet and life vests, Boy recommends, “You should have your aqua socks or booties because just in case you fall, they serve as a protection for your feet.” Once you’re up and armed, you have to listen carefully to the instructor’s directions—and make sure you follow them, too. “You have to be calm in situations that suddenly come up or make you nervous,” Boy says. For those wanting to try out this kind of activity, Anina recommends, “You should know yourself, if you can really handle this kind of pressure because you should also take into consideration that you’re not the only one on the boat, so you’re [also] responsible for all the other people in there.” Anina adds, “Don’t set high expectations. everything, and just enjoy the beauty of what we have to offer.” With daily stress, and the city’s toxic environment clouding our minds, it’s nice to escape and try something out of our comfort zones, all while trying to help our tourism industry. “The countryside there is really beautiful, it’s very clean and quite undisturbed,” Boy says. “And when you get to Kalinga, you could really appreciate nature there. It’s really calming and therapeutic, that’s why I always go back—and my family loved it.” “This is the kind of tourism that I hope will be more developed because people do these things all over the world and here, we have it in our own country,” Anina admits. “So I hope this experience,

once people try it anyway, they’ll refer it also to more people [who would] get into it for the thrill.” A word of caution, though, this activity is for older family members only. Those who want to enjoy this different kind of exhilaration should be prepared with around P9,000 per head for a twoday package that includes lodging, food, and program for cave exploration, kayaking, and whitewater rafting. Philippine Airlines offers daily flights to Tuguegarao, where visitors can enjoy the city’s sights and sounds. Head out for a two-hour ride to Tabuk, Kalinga, and discover the various undisturbed natural wonders of Northern Luzon, where sprawling mountains, vibrant rivers, and awe-inspiring rice terraces await. bc www.bcmag.ph

Just before I got pregnant for the second time, I had an executive check-up, and my doctor couldn’t believe that I was 38. My cholesterol levels were healthy, and my blood pressure levels were low. Admittedly, I’m not exactly as TV daily appearance thin when I worked in the news, but by no means am I overweight. Besides, I come from particularly good stock. On both sides, my grandparents had lived well into their hundreds. While we did have our share of minor health problems, diabetes was not one of them. Apparently, being Asian and older than 35 makes one more likely a candidate for GD. Diabetes is a condition in which your blood sugar or glucose level is high because there isn’t enough insulin in your blood, or your body isn’t responding to insulin properly. About two to seven out of 100 pregnant women develop gestational diabetes, and I, unfortunately, despite not having a family history of diabetes nor being overweight, still ‘won’ the lottery. Fortunately my GD was a borderline case, which I was able to manage mostly with a strict diet. However, because of the possible dangers my condition can pose on the baby,

ure, I was feasting on my share of sweets and fruits, as well as rice, pasta, and burgers—just about everything that crossed my mind and sounded delicious. It didn’t matter that I had the most terrible morning sickness that lasted all day long— there was no stopping me from tasting and eating all day. After all, wasn’t it my job to grow a healthy baby?
I had to go to the hospital for fetal nonstress tests twice a week, that involved me being hooked up to a machine to monitor the baby’s heartbeat, and any contractions I might have.
fasted for too long. I kept detailed records of everything I put in my mouth. It was both tedious and sometimes frustrating, but for the health of my unborn child, I knew I had to do it.
hen a mother has diabetes and her blood sugars are too high, the excess amounts of sugar crosses the placenta, giving the baby high blood glucose levels. Since the baby does not have diabetes, the baby’s pancreas has to make extra insulin to get rid of the blood glucose. At the same time, the baby gets more energy than needed to grow and develop, so the extra energy is stored as fat, creating the danger of babies that are too big. Given my history, my doctor felt this was the worstcase scenario for my baby. But there were many other complications that could arise, one of them even being stillbirth. So I took my GD seriously, despite my initial denial.
My doctor had warned me that as my pregnancy progressed, there was a very good chance that my diabetes would get worse, no matter how much dieting and exercise I did. Fortunately, I was one of the lucky ones who survived on minimal medication and did not require insulin shots.
W
Four times a day, I had to test my blood glucose levels: first thing in the morning after fasting, and an hour after each meal. Slowly, I learned what foods and what quantities would keep my blood glucose levels in line. I was put on a diet of six small meals each day—making sure that I never
With my strict diet, I hardly gained any more weight until the very end of my third trimester. In fact, in the first month that I had discovered I had GD, I even lost some weight. I was very concerned at first, but my doctors reassured me that this was normal. If I were to gain weight suddenly, that would mean that I wasn’t following my diet. In the end, it all paid off. I gained only 27 lbs throughout my entire pregnancy. With my first child, I gained 47 lbs—and that took me a whole year to lose it. As an offshoot of my GD, I had several scares throughout my last few months of pregnancy. My blood pressure was www.bcmag.ph

constantly being monitored, my blood was being tested for protein as well as the blood glucose levels, and regular ultrasounds were added to make sure that the baby was developing normally. My physician had discussed the pros and cons of my condition, and we agreed that it would be best to deliver this baby via cesarean section in anticipation that this baby would most likely be larger than my first because of the diabetes. My due date was Christmas day, but we had picked an earlier date for the C-section, so we could be home in time for the holidays.
B
ut my baby had other ideas. Before dawn on December 22, I went into labor in the middle of a strong storm that had brought floods to Orange County. I had trouble getting a babysitter to come watch my older son so early in the morning on a terribly rainy day. By the time we made it to the hospital, I had already dilated to 7 cm. I still insisted on a C-section, in anticipation of a possibly large baby. Lucas Sky was born 7 lbs, 2 oz at 10:30 AM, four hours earlier than we had www.bcmag.ph
originally scheduled. He had a head full of thick hair, long slender fingers, and rather large feet. My husband and I had chosen not to know the baby’s gender until we first laid eyes on him—and what a wonderful surprise it was to be blessed with another beautiful baby boy. My GD disappeared with childbirth. Two weeks after Lucas was born, I was also only fifteen pounds away from my pre-pregnancy weight. But after all is said and done, a sugar-free and low carb diet really wasn’t that bad. My husband and I actually still plan on sticking loosely to it since we both felt (and looked) great on it. If your doctor suspects you have gestational diabetes as well, you need to know there is no need to panic. Your doctors will tell you what your worst-case scenario could be. However, with proper diet, possible medication and exercise, as well as proper blood sugar monitoring, you and your baby should be just fine. Plus, you’ll shed those preggy pounds even before you have adjusted to having a newborn in your home—and once you are ready to face the rest of the world, you’ll look and feel like a great new mom. bc { MAR-APR 2011 } b c PHILIPPINES

f
or A.G. Saño, it all began with a dream of traveling up to the northern parts of the Philippines. After joining WWF Philippines as a photographer for the first ever humpback whale expedition in the country, his affinity for marine wildlife took center stage in his journey. Today, he is known as the Filipino artist who’s painting the town blue with magnificent murals of dolphins, as a response to the challenged posed by the Academy Award-winning documentary, The Cove. Directed by Louie Psihoyos, the documentary starred former dolphin trainer turned activist Ric O’Barry, and followed the story of how fisher folk in Japan hold dolphin drive hunting activities that slaughter up to 23,000 every year.

“I’ve been taking photographs of nature, I’ve been researching and caring for marine mammals, so it would make sense to join the campaign,” Saño, who has also been studying marine life for the past 10 years, explained. “Then I figured, how could other people relate to that? I’m a marine mammal researcher, so I should be there in the frontline to protect them.” Saño then decided to use his God-given talents as an instrument to raise awareness. “I presented myself as an ordinary Filipino citizen, an artist, a painter,” he said. He launched a mission to paint 23,000 dolphins on walls all over Southeast Asia, and subsequently founded the advocacy group, Dolphins Love Freedom Network. “I reached the 23,000 quota of Japan as my target. I want to pay tribute to each and every one of the dolphins that were killed each year,” Saño explained. “Before I knew it, [I had] thousands of supporters all over the country, so I was happy that people listened to an ordinary person.” A.G. adds that the convenience of cyberspace has made it easier for his campaign to cross borders and go global. The Dolphins Love Freedom Network’s Facebook page currently has over 2,000 supporters. But more than just creating murals to raise awareness and honor marine life, Saño is also instilling a sense of environmental consciousness in tomorrow’s generation, by going www.bcmag.ph

around schools and educational institutions, teaching kids how to take better care of our natural resources. “I teach children that they can do something, even if you’re just a Grade 5 student from Saranggani or Tawi-Tawi,” Saño explained. “Kuya A.G.,” as he was fondly called by the little ones, gave a 15-minute lecture on how dolphins live—from the way they swim (upwards and downwards, compared to fish, who swim from left to right), to the food they eat. He also explained how dolphins have a natural need to swim free across the oceans, as opposed to being held captive and made to perform in dolphinariums. During the interview, he revealed how these animals are abused. “If the dolphin has a full stomach, it will never follow your commands.” “They claim they’ve been educating people of all cultures for the past 60 years, but what happened to nature since then?” he questions. “The state of the environment is terrible. More than that, they’ve been unconsciously teaching children that it’s okay to be superior over nature, that we can put them in behind bars or fences and not let them do what they are supposed to do in nature.” This is the reason Saño strongly opposes dolphinariums that feature public displays and performances—a multi-billion dollar industry, according to Ric O’Barry. Saño muses, “The ocean has no boundaries, which is also the same reason why I’m trying to go against captivity of dolphins. When God made the sea, there was no boundaries, no limits. No one should own these dolphins.” www.bcmag.ph

b c PHILIPPINES { MAR-APR 2011 }
By going around the nation and the world to spread the word about dolphin captivity and its negative effects to the eco-system, Saño hopes to teach kids how to be environmentally responsible. “It starts in the household. In your very bedroom. Start decreasing your use of plastics and other non-biodegradable waste,” he suggests. “Make sure you know how to compost because it can significantly reduce waste. When you learn how to do it, teach your neighbor.” One of Saño’s latest murals was the wall of the Creative Beginners Center for Learning and Development in Greenmeadows, Quezon City. Now on its 16th year, the school is geared towards forming individuals who are holistic, socially responsible, and able to be good citizens towards their community and their environment. Armed with a liter of black paint, he quickly goes to work, creating curves and waves that soon form shapes—and within seconds, the previously white wall is covered with outlines of seven dolphins. Minutes later, the seven have become nine, and the nine become 15, and so on. “This is A.G.’s 23,001st dolphin,” Creative Beginners’ Job Ambrosio says fondly. “Right there on our wall.” Surprisingly, Saño has gone way beyond his 23,000 target, and has no plans of ever ending his campaign. “I don’t see myself stopping anymore,” he admits.
“I left my job to go back to the Philippines and do this. It was a clear answer to my question of where I should go. I’ve met and befriended people who have been putting themselves in the frontline to save nature. They are willing to die for their cause, because we know where the state of the environment is going. When I see these people, I am humbled, because I feel like everything I’ve done is nothing compared to what they have done.” So it has become his mission in life to plant a seed of environmental awareness in the minds of children, the same generation who will most likely suffer the consequences of the irresponsibility of those that came before them, unless we make a change now. “Start saving the environment at home. Parents will be the best teachers [to their kids]. Tell them not to throw trash just anywhere. Tell them not to use plastic as much as possible. Don’t go to dolphin shows. It all starts at home,” he points out. If this enlightening encounter with A.G. Saño has managed to instill a sense of awareness not only in these kids, but also in every person who will read his story, then we can somehow alter our choices, to make the Earth more livable for the next generation. The smell of fresh paint outside Creative Beginners then becomes the scent of hope—for the dolphins, the environment, and for the future. bc www.bcmag.ph

n apple is not just your crunchy lunchbox staple–or in this case, neither is a kiwi just an oval, brown berry, nor is a lychee simply a sweet dessert (nor your favorite martini flavor). Find out the fringe benefits of these invigorating fruits
AMOROUS TREAT During the ancient times, the Chinese considered it to be an aphrodisiac
Purr-fect The plant has a catnip-like aroma, which entices cats to rub themselves against the plant’s trunk
KIWI benefits When its black seeds are crushed, it produces an oil rich in Alpha-Linoleic acid (an Omega-3 fatty acid), which aids in maintaining cardiovascular health. With more Vitamin C than an equivalent amount of oranges, the high levels of amino acids improves muscle growth and body building. In a study among 6 and 7-year old kids in Italy, those who consume kiwi were less likely to have respiratory health problems, such as wheezing and coughing. It contains an anti-mutagenic component which helps prevent gene mutation. Its extracts have also been known to inhibit melanoma. The fruit also contains serotonin, a natural neurotransmitter that gives a calming effect to the brain.

he next months will be all about high spirits, packed bags, and kids itching to get out of the house for a fullblown vacation. Unfortunately, we also have to face the inevitable heat of the sun. While we’re all gearing up to embrace the sights, sounds, and tastes of summer, health risks are also around the corner, waiting for the right time to strike. Protect your family from the sicknesses that surface as the heat rises in the coming months, with these helpful tips. Watch Your Temperature
Rigorous activities such as sports can bring about heat exhaustion, especially if you’re exposed to high temperatures for a long period of time. It may lead to heat stroke, a more serious condition in which the body could no longer regulate its temperature because of extreme hotness or exertion under very warm temperatures. If physical activities cannot be avoided, schedule them early in the morning, or late in the afternoon. Remember that the sun’s UV rays are most intense between 10 AM and 4 PM. Keep Drinking (the Good Stuff)
In order to prevent such illnesses from occurring, keep your body hydrated by drinking sufficient amounts of water, juices, and other fluids. Minimize the intake of foods that are high in caffeine, alcohol, or sugar, for these also contribute to dehydration. Eat light and right—go for fresh fruits and vegetables with a lot of water content. Consuming generous amounts of liquids can also help reduce the risk of developing kidney and urinary tract infection (U.T.I.), and constipation. Watch What You Eat
Dine in establishments with sanitary certifications, and avoid purchasing food from street vendors. The heat increases the proliferation rate of certain bacteria in food, causing it to become rotten faster. Such impurities can cause diarrhea, typhoid, and hepatitis A. Whether at home or outdoors, properly store food in clean containers, to avoid contamination. Dispose of leftovers accordingly, and make sure that utensils are thoroughly cleaned and sterilized as well. Stay in the Shade
Apply sun block for those days when you can’t avoid being under sunlight. For those with sensitive skin, check the www.bcmag.ph
label for hypoallergenic materials, and consult your dermatologist for other gentle options. Prolonged exposure to the sun’s UV rays not only causes sunburn, but also puts you at higher risk for skin problems such as second-degree burns (that may lead to infection when blisters are formed), uneven skin tone, early aging, pigmentation, and skin cancer. Apply virgin coconut oil or petroleum jelly to avoid chapped, windblown, and dry lips. Wear loose-fitting shirts with light colors, and seek shade as much as possible. Commonly occurring in very young children, miliaria or heat rash is the blockage of sweat ducts caused by very warm weather and excessive perspiring. Younger kids and infants are more prone to developing heat rash during the hot days because their sweat ducts are immature, and can easily trap perspiration underneath the skin. To avoid, keep your children in cool and well-ventilated areas. Avoid applying creams and other lotions that may further clog your child’s pores, and use prickly heat powder instead. Protect Your Eyes
The heat and sunlight can also pose as a threat to your eyes. Use sunglasses with UV protection, and make sure to clean them regularly before use. Sore or pink eye is a viral infection that can be passed along through hand to eye contact. Train your kids to wash their hands frequently. Disinfect surfaces, doorknobs, light switches, telephones, computers, gadgets, and remote controls, to avoid the spread of germs. Wear wide-rimmed hats and shades during those hot days to prevent cataracts from developing. While cataracts often occur later in life, prolonged exposure to the sun’s UV
rays increase the risk of damage to the eye’s lenses. For itchy eyes in children, ask your pediatrician or opthalmologist about Vistallerg. The primary step to keeping healthy is proper hygiene, and a well-balanced diet. While we may not control the heat of the sun, or the transmission of germs around us, we can take an active approach in making sure our kids get the best protection they can get. bc
don’ t forget your pet
Our beloved animals get affected by the change in weather, so ensure that they are hydrated and kept away from direct sunlight or heat. Always have water readily available, and limit their exercise so they don’t get too exhausted. For dogs, watch out for hot spots, a pesky skin inflammation that gives them bald, uncomfortable sores. Limit time outdoors; early morning and evening hours are ideal for playtime. Be especially mindful of dogs that have short, pushed-in faces like pugs and bulldogs, puppies and elderly pets, as they are more prone to heatstroke.

Having your kids along for the ride will require more things to bring. Before the trip, ask the hotel or the travel destination for any services they offer for children, such as stroller or high-chair rentals, to lessen the amount of baggage. If you’re traveling to the U.S., you can rent gear from websites such as babysaway.com. With a less heavy load, keeping up with excited kids will be easier.
1. Travel light.
Even if you encounter heavy traffic and slow moving lines, it is still best to keep an open mind and take things positively. Keep in mind that you are in for a vacation, not a disaster.
10. Be flexible.
Take advantage of the fact that airlines do not count the weight of car seats. If your baggage weighs around 50 lbs, you can keep extra clothes in your car seat bag to avoid overweight fees.
4. Pack smart.
3. Bring toys and games—quiet ones. As kids normally have short attention spans, it will be best to bring toys to keep them entertained (an iPad works pretty well, too). However, it is advised to leave the noisy ones at home, to maintain peace and quiet during the vacation. This can also be the time to teach your bigger kids some responsibility by having them pack their toys in their own bag, and letting them carry it. Parents should always check the toys for water content or potential explosive material such as Play-Doh (according to the U.S. Transportation Security Administration).
5. Have enough room. Children below two years of age do not require seats on the plane, but it is recommended to have documentation of the child’s age such as a birth certificate, in case of questioning. If your child is already mobile and the flight takes at least two hours, it is better to provide a seat for your child, where he can have more space to move around in, thus reducing on-plane tantrums.
9. Consume wisely. Bring individual refillable
water bottles that you can replenish at the hotel and restaurants, instead of purchasing bottled water in commercial areas. Not only can you save money, but you’ll also avoid having to throw a number of plastic bottles.
6.
Plan
ahead
for
security
While packing, keep in mind that medications, baby formula or food, breastmilk, and juice are allowed if brought in reasonable amounts. Also, kids need to take off their shoes for the screening, so have them wear Velcro or other easy-to-wear (and remove) shoes on the day of the flight.
screenings.
7. Dine with the perks. Eat breakfast where kids eat free and split meals. As the little ones are more excited to play than to eat during travel time, look for kidfriendly restaurants that also provide crayons and paper while you wait for your food. Some restaurants even give free meals for kids on certain days—a great deal for you and your family.
If you want to save up on stroller and other child gear rental fees (or simply want to use your own, for security and sanitary reasons), pack the lightest and easiest to lug around (an umbrella stroller such as Hollywood celebrity fave Cybex, or the Safety 1st push chair, work great for mobility and won’t break the bank).
8. Bring your gear.

e learned of Luca’s autism at 1 year, 9 months. He was given what we like to call the entry-level diagnosis of GDD, or Global Developmental Delay. That just means that he was too young to be labeled with Autism proper, but was categorized nonetheless.
by hiding the voltage regulator.
My husband, I remember, gave me a call from the office and said that he felt sad. Sad for Luca. Sad for the future. As for me, I went straight into denial. Ha! I think I still am. In denial, I mean. I immediately went to work researching anything and everything there was to know about this GDD. I went knocking on doors of intervention center after intervention center. I got waitlisted, was put on hold, and was downright not accepted. I would get hit by reality once in a while. Cry inside the car on a rainy day with Journey in the background, that kind of thing. But I always kept my eyes on the ball. I had to get Luca to therapy, and the sooner, the better.
Every aspect of my life revolves around his autism—my work, my menu, my wardrobe. Everything. Our family activities are simple and limited, but nonetheless, still hella fun. We like to drive off to the beach when we can. We like going to noisy malls like SM. That way, when Luca has some sort of meltdown, it gets drowned out than say, a quiet mall like Rockwell. Death. Death by jahe. When we go on trips, we always have a PLAN B. Don’t ever leave home without a freaking PLAN B, whether you live with autism or not.
My eldest son, Santino, is my true joy. I dream that he will have a loving family, and a fulfilling career. My fervent prayer is for him to never tire of being a kuya to his brother. To have the strength to carry on taking care of Luca when we are no longer there.
“Every aspect of my life revolves around his autism—my work, my menu, my wardrobe.”
The greatest challenge for me as a mom and a human being is really, to get my ass off Facebook. I heard somewhere that children will not do what you say, but they will do what you do. That just hits so close to home. If I’m on the computer working, Tweeting, blogging, stalking exes of exes, how do I expect my children (both special and other) to shut that TV and get down to dinner, pronto? Now, I only open my laptop in the office (and as I type this article). I only allow tech on weekends. I got my electricity bill down

My advice to the newly diagnosed parents: Get a nice document bag. Your journey will be long and hard, and you will amass a great number of reports from many, many (did I say many?) professionals. And each one will request for copies of the others’ reports. Get a copier or a scanner with a printer too, if you can afford it. Most importantly, have at least one bottle of cold beer in your ref. You will never know when your soul will need it. Laugh. Laugh at the negative. Laugh at the challenges. Be joyful, always. bc www.bcmag.ph

S ta y- at- h o me dad
my four years or so as a stay-at-home dad (SAHD), I have often heard men who, on learning what I do, remark something to the effect of “Wow, I’d love to be able to do that.” Of course, some have naively meant, “Wow, I’d love to have a vacation like that.” And others could have just as easily said “Wow, I could never do that.” But many, a surprising number, expressed a genuine wish. And with a growing number of women bringing home the majority of many household’s income, more families are finding Can you play princesses and still feel like a man?
A year or so ago, I was playing with my daughter when the doorbell rang. Our postman absentmindedly handed me a package, then suddenly did a double-take as he gave me the clipboard to sign. “Thanks,” I offered. But he quickly retreated to his van without a word. I shut the door, then turned and caught a look at myself in the bathroom mirror. My daughter and I had just been playing “Salon.” I was wearing about a dozen barrettes in my hair. And don’t think having a boy makes things easier.
It’s not all trucks and footballs. I often spend entire afternoons at the mall talking to my child in the voice of various Disney characters while we shop. You could, too. Can you get used to funny looks? Do you work well alone?
Being a stay-at-home dad can be a lonely life. Your friends are all at work, fellow SAHDs are (still) rather uncommon, and you’re unlikely to be palling around with the neighborhood moms. With adult company often rather scarce, whaddya do? Good riddance to them all? Wait until the wife gets home? Chat box-scores with your toddler? Join the PTA? Better consider your options before you find yourself talking the ear off the nearest bank teller or video store clerk. Do you enjoy dumb questions?
“Giving mom a vacation?” “Babysitting today?” “When did you lose your job?” “No, I mean, what do you do for a living?” “So when are you going to go back to work?” “What do you DO all day?” “Where do I find a wife who’ll let me not work?” Prepare your answers now. www.bcmag.ph
themselves in the position to more-easily make that choice. And more are. Recent studies have shown that anywhere from one-third to more than one-half of men would “consider” at-home fatherdom. And so, for male readers who have already gotten past the idea of spending their days cleaning, cooking, and playing, and for couples who think they might like to buck tradition, here are some final, more “advanced” questions to consider before finally passing the diapers to dad.
Do you like women?
No, not like that. I mean, do you like spending lots of time around women who are not your wife or your mother? Because at school, at the grocery store, around the neighborhood, at the playground and the local playgroup, you will often be the only man. Can you get used to that? And perhaps, more importantly, can your wife? Do you really want this to be your only job?
Because it will be your only job. I’ve encountered a lot of men who think that staying home with the kids would be the perfect time to pursue some long-unfulfilled dream. Let’s be clear. You will not finally write your novel. You will not paint or write poetry. You won’t start a new business or learn to play scratch golf. And you probably won’t read much beyond “Where The Wild Things Are” either. Trust me, you won’t have the time nor the energy. At least not until, at the earliest, the little ones start school.
“Our postman did a doubletake as he gave me the clipboard to sign. My daughter and I had just been playing ‘Salon.’ I was wearing about a dozen barrettes in my hair.” GOOD READ
Are you ready not to want to return to work?
Finally, be prepared for the possibility that when and if the time comes for you to return to the workforce, you find yourself a bit ruined for the task. Between the time with your family, the independence, the satisfaction, and the flexibility of stay-at-home fatherhood, the thought of returning to offices, bosses, and deadlines may seem rather unappealing. Even more so than it did before. In fact, my own stint as a stay-at-home dad is on no small part responsible for beginning my own at-home business when my daughter began school last year. Because no matter the dumb questions, the occasional loneliness, the frequent embarrassment, or my still-unwritten novel, I wouldn’t have traded the last few years for anything. And I don’t want to start now. bc

hey say that absence or distance makes the heart grow fonder. In reality, it also makes the heart and body go insane. Such is the case of couples who share their beds with their little ones—co-sleeping, or bed sharing, as many call it. With the advent of such child-rearing principles like attachment parenting, co-sleeping has become more than just a trend, but an adapted lifestyle by a lot of parents. An adverse effect of such practices includes the assumption that couples have less privacy, and thus, less of an interesting sex life. This common misconception has led some moms and dads to keep co-sleeping out of the question. What most people don’t see is that co-sleeping and an active, satisfying sex life is in fact possible, if not pretty simple. For parents who have babies or toddlers, it’s quite manageable to copulate in their presence, because they are too young to understand (or even care about) what’s going on—but maybe hide under a comforter or blanket if you’re uncomfortable. You can opt to have scheduled nights off, wherein your baby will have to sleep in his or her own room—with a caregiver, if you can’t stand the thought of your infant being alone. In turn, this prepares them for the move once they’ve grown too big for your quarters. If your kids are, say, 3 to 10 years old, and have no plans of moving out, then find another way to get physically intimate with your partner. Here’s the reality: you may have grown too used to having sex in the bedroom because it’s convenient. Why not have sex in other, unexpected places? The kitchen might be a good place to start. Remember when you first wanted to christen the smooth, marble counters after you moved in? Of course this goes without saying that you disinfect after you are done. There’s always the couch or

recreation room. You can always bring a baby monitor if you’re paranoid. You might have a billiard table or swimming pool (how about a midnight rendezvous in the water?), and the good old bathtub or shower, which you most likely have overlooked. Surprise the hubby and try an early morning bath, and you’ll surely have a wonderful day (after all, men are thought to be more libidinous at this time of day). If you really want to get creative and romantic, set up a guest room like a hotel, and keep the lights low with just some candles along the perimeter of the room. Sprinkle some rose petals, pop the champagne (or whatever your preferred drink is), and sneak out of your bedroom once the kids are asleep. You’ll have your very own getaway, without literally having to get away. Treat your spouse to an evening out, if you have a trusted yaya, or a relative is available to watch over your kids for a night. Check into a real, fancy hotel and do “date night”—dinner, massage, and a slow, satisfying romp in the sheets. The excitement of finally touching each other again will definitely increase the sexual tension between you, and result to some really amazing copulation. The key to being intimate with your spouse is creativity and compromise. The decision to co-sleep should always be paired with the commitment to give time for physical intimacy. Remember that both of you are sexual beings, regardless of how many kids you have. The sex itself might not be the same down the road, but it does not mean that you can’t find that intimate connection you once had. Just re-sync your hormonal clocks, and find a way around your schedules (and your kids’). Love-making is not an activity you can place on the back burner because your children are your priority and they sleep in your bed. Regular intercourse is also one of the factors that keep relationships healthy, and ready to stand the test of time. bc www.bcmag.ph

considered cool, parenthood is finally given its due exaltation. Nowadays, models and celebrities don’t have to ignore their biological clocks in favor of a burgeoning career. Relations for Asia at Marsh takes their brood to live in different and exciting places. Most importantly, she’s mother to the adorably wide and gray-eyed Kieran (also noteworthy is that those cherubic looks landed Baby K his first contract as the “face” of Drypers diapers), who just turned 1 this March. This photo shoot was done at their current Manila dwelling in Ayala Alabang, postChristmas holiday in Australia, where Amanda’s parents and two siblings reside to this day. Entering the Jacob’s southern quarters is stepping into a world of balance and harmony. This lady of the house is the perfect hostess, and is as lovely and fresh-faced in her home clothes as she is decked out on her numerous magazine covers and billboards. What makes her more beautiful (and her friends will attest to this) is that she has a welcoming, generous heart, one that’s always ready to spring into action when a charity or cause calls out for her help. Her husband, David, who’s equally handsome and charming himself, is so laidback that you’d forget he’s actually a globetrotting exec. With his looks and pedigree (brother to TV host, Christine Jacob Sandejas), he could have easily taken the showbiz route as well. Their son is endearing beyond words—one smile and you’re left defenseless. For several hours during the shoot, not a single tear was shed (the signs of a true budding pro), and his giggles were infectious. He brightens up at the sight of his parents, and his attachment to mom clearly goes beyond the fact that he is a purely breastfed baby. There is a bond to these two that you cannot shake. We also got to meet the three other babies—adorable, small pooches who have lived with Amanda even when she was still single and residing at a condo in Makati. While their domicile is one that is spacious and comfortable, what makes it extra relaxing is David’s passion for music. Also a notable DJ in Hong Kong who packs the house on his limited spare time—he had chill-out tunes constantly playing and heard throughout the abode, making our shoot an even easier one. Witness another side to the beautiful couple (is it apt to christen “Damanda” at this point?) as BC shows you a peek into this trio’s fortunate home life.
amanda BC: Describe your foray into the world of modeling and hosting. Amanda Griffin Jacob: I modeled on
and off for over 15 years. Had the clichéd introduction into it by getting scouted at a shopping mall when I was 12. I did commercials throughout high school, and took an intermission when I was in university in Australia. After university, I moved back to the Philippines, and started modeling full time here, and around Asia. My shift into hosting was purely unintentional. I had no aspirations or inclinations towards that field. Although these days, it is the logical career progression. BC: How did you make the ultimate decision to take a hiatus from your career to concentrate on starting a family? AGJ: Well, I moved to Hong Kong. And
I did toy with the idea of possibly trying to start up a career over there. But I was

“I never knew this kind of pure love could be possible. I always say the cliches are so true. I’m just a mushy cornball when it comes to my child.” my time 50/50 between Manila and Hong Kong. In Hong Kong, I don’t have a yaya, and over there I’m just focused on activities for him and myself. Playdates, yoga, tennis. Although I am percolating a few career ideas for my life over there. But when I’m in Manila, I have help and I work, so I still have a connection to my former life. And this year, I will definitely get back into working more. BC: How do you manage to stay in great shape so soon after giving birth? AGJ: When I was pregnant, I gained about
60 lbs. I’ll be the first to admit I really enjoyed my pregnancy. After having to be stick thin for most of my life for my career, I did fully embrace the “eating for two” concept. Perhaps a little too much, but I had fun. I was surprised by the hurtful comments about my weight gain from friends. For me, a pregnant woman is always beautiful. And the thing that should matter most is health. After I gave birth, I was completely aware that I had a bit of an uphill battle ahead of me to regain my prepregnancy figure. It took me 6 months of healthy eating, exercise, and breastfeeding www.bcmag.ph
to shed the weight. Now for maintenance, I do Field Fitness in Polo Club, which combines plyometrics, TRX, running, boxing, etc, tailor fit to your needs. When I’m in HK, I do hot yoga. I’m also obsessed with salads, and try to eat them twice a day. My downfall is chocolate. I am addicted! BC: Aren’t we all! How did you make the decision to become a vegetarian though, and raise your son as one? AGJ: Becoming a vegetarian was radically
spur of the moment. I started reading a book titled “101 Reasons Why I’m a Vegetarian” by Pamela Rice. I got through 1/3 of the book, and couldn’t stomach eating meat again. Education and awareness is key. To be honest, I haven’t even finished reading her book because if I did, I would become a vegan, and I’m not ready for that yet. My decision to raise Kieran as a vegetarian just comes from knowing the effects of an animal based diet not just for babies, but humans in general. I’m not just raising him as a vegetarian, but hopefully will instill in him from an early age the importance of eating not just healthily, but also
responsibly for our environment. BC: What advice would you give to parents with regards to child nutrition and health? AGJ: Be aware. Educate yourself. Read up
thoroughly on what is the best for your baby. Whatever or however you choose to feed your child, just make sure that it optimizes their health and growth, to give them the very best start in life. I don’t force my views on others. I just believe you need to get out there and do your homework. BC: Can you tell us about your goals for Glam-O-Mama, and how it has made you more well rounded as a mother and as a businesswoman? AGJ: I’m so excited for Glam-O-Mamas
(www.glamomamas.com) in 2011! My partner, Nicole Jacinto, and I are brimming with a multitude of ideas and inspirations for our company. We just want to bring together a fantastic network of young mothers and children, to hopefully enrich their experiences. Motherhood is my passion. Stay tuned. We are really going for it this year! BC: Describe that moment when you first found out you were going to be a father. DJ: Funny story! I had just returned from
quite some time, but our paths never really crossed until she visited HK in 2007. I was always known as the tour guide of HK, so many people would call when they arrived. I was extremely excited when she called, as we were both single at the time, and I always found her extremely beautiful inside and out. We ended up having a fantastic time out and as they say, the rest is history.
a business trip, and Amanda had a card waiting for me. I open the card and find this funny looking, circular device. In my mind I was saying—what on Earth is this? I just smiled at her and said thanks, and she immediately knew that I had no idea what it was. I looked at it again and realized it was the pregnancy test device showing a positive result! It was the best news ever.
BC: Since you are also a DJ, what is that one song that always reminds you of Amanda? DJ: The one song that reminds me of
BC: What is the best thing about having a son? DJ: I can’t say that there is one best thing,
Amanda, and our relationship, is Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol. This song was sung as a surprise at our wedding by two of our dear friends. Very special indeed.
as everything about him is incredible. The one thing I can say is, knowing that you both have been able to bring someone into this world, it’s truly a blessing and a feeling that words can’t explain.

or a hike with the family in Hong Kong. Kieran and Amanda love the outdoors! We also love going for a swim, and Kieran is a natural swimmer and loves the water. We also enjoy just hanging out at home and having our crazy sessions of fun and laughter with Kieran. Priceless moments! BC: How do you strike a balance between your job, finding the time to DJ, and your role as a husband and father? DJ: DJ-ing is a passion of mine, so it’s not
really work. Obviously with the baby, it becomes more difficult for me to DJ over the weekends because I want to spend more time with the family, especially since I travel so much for work. Striking a
balance between work and family has been difficult because I’m traveling so much. This has been our challenge, so I try to do as much work when I’m on the road, so I can spend more time with the family when I’m back in Hong Kong. BC: How do you manage living and working abroad? DJ: I’ve been so used to living abroad,
because I left home for school at an early age, so the concept of living and working abroad is not new to me. It was difficult when I was working in New York, since you do miss being with your family, but now that we live in Hong Kong, it’s very easy to travel to the Philippines and
Singapore to see our respective families and friends. Living and working abroad is a lot of fun, as you get to meet a variety of people and expose yourself to different cultures. BC: What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome as parents, and as husband and wife? DJ: I can’t really say there is any major
challenge at the moment. Of course, adjusting to the role of being a parent is a constant challenge, but that’s really to be expected, and something that we both enjoy as we continue to learn so much about each other both as individuals, and as new parents. bc

he sleek three-floor residence is a versatile cross between a home and an art gallery makes perfect sense, as the man of the house happens to be one of the Philippines’ most sought after artists today. Michael Cacnio and his lovely wife, Tess, casually welcomed us into their exquisite home, which doubles as their very own showroom. Almost every wall and surface is occupied by remarkable works of art. It is no surprise that when we arrived on a quiet Sunday afternoon, the couple were entertaining guests, who were eagerly admiring his crafts. Michael and Tess are an admirable couple—the two work as a team, with Tess acting as a manager of sorts. Michael admits that his betterhalf handles all the financial side of his work, which started out as a unique, God-given talent that has led him to achieve such commendable accomplishments, including his The Outstanding Young Men Award for Arts in 2006—truly a cherry on top of his wonderful 15th year in the field. Aside from being a busy tandem, the couple are first and foremost, parents to three fine young boys—12-year old Jacob, 8-year old Mateo, and 4-year old Lucas, all of whom have inherited their father’s love for the arts, and quite interestingly, LEGOs. “My fascination in sculpture started as early as three years old,” Michael says. “I got a Christmas gift from my godmother in the States—a bucket of LEGO blocks. I loved its basic colors and enjoyed creating different things I imagined from these simple blocks.” “They all love playing LEGOs,” Tess admits. “They all love building blocks, coming up with figures. [Whenever Michael would bring out the LEGO, he would challenge the kids to come up with the best airplane, or the best car.] They all do that.”

Speaking of inheritance, it seems like the most valuable heritage that Michael received from his father is his natural talent for the arts. Angel Cacnio is a famed painter who mastered oil and watercolor painting, depicting scenes from the folk genre—a quality inherent in Michael’s sculptures. “Being the youngest in the family, as a little boy, I stayed in his working studio most of the time,” Michael recalls.” I played around with paints and canvas, too. The appreciation I got from my father in my simple drawings and doodles boosted my confidence.” Michael’s first brushstrokes were heavily influenced by Angel, but under the tutelage of National Artist for Sculpture Napoleon Abueva during his years at the University of the Philippines (where he studied Fine Arts), he soon found his niche in sculpting brass. “The beauty of color, resilience, and durability of brass gives me a sense of instant artistic gratification. The dynamic process using this medium allows me to explore and engage in a satisfying state in creating the movement, shape and life to my artwork,” he explains. “From a plain sheet of brass, I will cut it into desired sizes, then into three-dimensionally shapes by bending and heating. I use an oxy-acetylene torch to heat the metal, so the figure can be sculpted into its final shape. The malleability of brass allows me to create different subjects.” Jacob: Wine/navy tailor-fit cotton polo by HACKET LONDON, P6,950, Rustan’s Department Store Mateo: Noel polo shirt by PERIWINKLE JR., P645, Periwinkle Stores . The garage, which happens to be where the magic happens, doesn’t look typical at all—it’s one that belongs to a true sculptor. Here, amazing pieces of art that demonstrate the simple truths about Filipino culture, family, and community, are formed. He says it takes around three to four days to come up with a small sculpture, but it highly depends on its intricacy. “I get ideas and inspiration from my dayto-day experiences. From all the people I meet—including family friends, people in the politics, streets, vendors, and lessons learned from all the situations I get into,” Michael explains. “Most importantly, my passion to jumpstart a day, or to start a piece comes from God, whom I know gives me strength to be inspired by all these people and events around me.” The 42-year old artist says, “Kite and Fishing (Children at Play) will always be my favorite. I love my Mother and Child Series. The balloons and ladder series challenged me well, and I find a therapeutic time of relaxation doing my Reflection Series.” He adds that aside from sculpting, “I like painting. I do that once in www.bcmag.ph
a while. I also find applied art, like interior design and jewelry designing, interesting— and would like to improve and know more about glass blowing art.” Michael takes pride in capturing bits and pieces of the world, as he first observed in his home in Malabon, and telling a story through his sculptures. He explains, “The Filipino’s playful spirit, natural charm, and happy disposition, as well as the uncorrupted simplicities of my own life, family and childhood, shaped my indelible imprimatur on Philippine art, [and are] depicted in majority of my work. I value the deep sense of concern for one’s dignity and respect towards others. I take pride even the not-so-positive nature of Filipinos, seen in our traditions and culture.” It was this same distinct ability to capture such scenes that led him to captivate audiences with his endearing pieces, earning him as much as 50 successful solo exhibits all around the world. In fact, he also became the first Filipino to have a solo exhibit in the European Commission's headquarters in Berlaymont, Brussels in 2007, an experience that he admits, is just
one of the defining points in his career. The others? “The first one-man show in Lopez Museum, the solo shows in Singapore and the Philippine Center in New York, [the creation of ] the Reflection in RED theme works, and The Outstanding Young Men Award.” He says of the TOYM Award, “[It was] unexpected. I could still feel all over again the nervousness I felt during the panel interview. I’m so thankful to all the people who recognized this God-given talent, for all those who understood the message and vision I convey through my sculptures. I really felt so joyful. It was the best gift given to me that year.” Michael has a lot of feathers in his cap, but the one that's very special is fatherhood. He says, “Being a father gave me a shooting drive to improve. I started my ‘Children at Play’ series when I became a father. I get inspired with so much familythemed pieces—father and son, three boys working together as a team, etc. The change is for the better.” He also admits, “Fatherhood has been a life changing experience for me. my relationship with myself. I can’t explain so much, but everything I do now is more for my children and for their future. It’s been an everyday learning experience.” When it comes to parenting, Michael says that it’s all about setting priorities, and sharing the load with his wife. Lucky for both of them, they have the luxury of working at home. “Since I work at home same as my wife, it’s not really hard to balance everything. There is no need for me to go out every day. [While] my kids are in school, I’m home doing my artwork. For school needs and meetings, Tess will take over. It’s security for my kids to see me or Tess around every time they leave and go back home,” Michael explains. Tess admits that they're not the “typical couple” who have their own separate endeavors. Instead, they're a team working together—all the time. She adds that, “Michael works at home, I do my office [work] here at home, so the kids [always see us, even if we're busy.]” As for their business travels, Michael says, “It's just quite tricky if we go abroad for an exhibit, of course, since it's me and my wife together. Usually, trips abroad are a once-a-year thing, I just explain
to them why we need to be out for a couple of days, and they understand.” “I'm proud of him, honestly,” Tess says of her husband’s accomplishments, which have not only made the Filipino nation proud, but has made a global impact in the industry of art. “Of course, as a wife and mother, I admire him, but I don't really show it to him [that] I'm a number one fan.” She goes on to praise him, saying, “I would say he's an ideal [husband], he doesn't have bisyo, he doesn't smoke, he doesn't go out. He's a typical homebody. Most of the wives would tell me, it's a good thing about your husband, you don’t need to worry that he’s going somewhere else. Michael loves to stay home,” Tess says. Even more reason to stay home and spend quality time with the family is the Cacnios’ very own theater, which sits on the third floor of their stylish home. We took shots of the family in the special room, where they often enjoy watching their favorite films, while the kids happily munched on some cup noodles. “I would say he's a good family man, he's a good provider." she says. "When it comes to the kids, he takes care. Actually, [they're

closer to him, than to me.]” Tess beams, “They're all very Michael. My eldest son, Jacob, has very strong colors when it comes to painting. Very fearless. At least that's what I hear from Michael.” The only woman in the house also has something to say about their magnificent home. Despite feeling “like a queen,” she says that “as you've seen the house, [there is no] woman's touch. The house is very manly. You can't see anything flowery. You just really have to adjust to their taste. It's not my taste, and they have to adjust to it. It's not like that.” The seemingly masculine home features a gorgeous wooden stairs by the main door, which leads up to the second floor, where the cozy, intimate spaces with deep-hued walls serve as the children’s and master bedroom. An interesting accent on the second floor is the bridge that overlooks the receiving room and leads up to the family’s very own theater. While the house draws a lot of inspiration from the artist and may seem very ‘macho,’ Michael in turn draws inspiration from his family. “As the lyrics in the song, I’ll describe

[Tess] as ‘the wind beneath my wings.’ She is my number one critic, adviser, friend, partner, and neutralizer in everything. She is sexy, funny, simple, candid, and most importantly, a good cook. As a mother, I know she tries very hard to be the best one, I can see the effort and I appreciate it.” The proud father admits, “[I] would like to encourage [my children] the way my Dad did to me.” But more than just skills, Tess also wants their children to inherit values— the same ones that will pave their way to success. “I always tell them that I want you to grow sensitive to the feelings of other people, so that you’ll gain more friends. Not to the point of pleasing everybody, but [so that there] would be more people who would be a special part of your life. I don't want them to grow up self-righteous and self-centered.” It’s expected that these young boys will grow up to be as humble as their father; after all, they already have his inherent talents and subtle charm. As for Michael and Tess, they’ll go on to be good parents and artists in their own right—creating a better world not just for their children, but for those lives they have touched through their craft. bc

He’s beyond spoiled! (Laughs) The best thing you can do for your kid is to give him a lot of love and attention. Jack had a passport when he was 6 months old. He’s traveled everywhere. We really pride ourselves that we are a family unit. When Mark was on tour, we’d pick up and go, and it was a whole family experience. I didn’t travel outside the country until I was 20! We’re also lucky that [Mark and I] have family that live 2 hours away, so he gets more than enough attention. Going on tour must’ve been fun! What were your biggest splurges while you were pregnant?
I shopped at NOM [Naissance on Melrose] because I think Jennifer [Noonan] has a great sense of style. So when I was 3 months pregnant, I went there–Mark went with me–and I probably spent $1,200 on maternity clothes! (Laughs) I loved buying handbags and shoes to kinda balance out the rest of my body. The great thing about the last couple of Blink tours was that the guitar player [Tom DeLonge] and his wife had a daughter 3 weeks before we had our son. And then with the Green Day tour, Adrienne and Billie Joe [of the band Green Day] brought their 2 sons Jakob and Joey, and it was so inspiring. I just loved what they do. I loved how they brought their family out and it was a whole experience for the family. I think it’s hard enough being in a marriage, and then in a family. And thank God that I have such a good marriage, and I don’t
know how it would be if I didn’t. It’s good for your kids to have an understanding of what you do, and have an appreciation for it. I think that experience alone you can’t fit in any school room. What are your favorite memories with your family?
We’re big Disneyland people, so all the Disneyland memories are great. When we were in London, and Blink was touring in Europe for Thanksgiving, Mark and I just came back from an MTV trip with Cameron Diaz and Eva Mendes. My Mom flew over with Jack and met us in London and we spent Thanksgiving there. It was so much fun. We stayed literally a rock’s throw from Buckingham Palace. Jack loved seeing Big Ben. He thinks it’s Peter Pan’s clock because in the Disney movie, Peter Pan flies past it with Wendy, John, Michael and Tinkerbell. What’s Childish?
Childish is a maternity and kids line. We’ve been around since March of 2003. I started it shortly after I gave birth to my son, Jack. The maternity line is definitely more fashion-forward than most lines, yet MAR-APR 2011 philippines

We use really comfortable fabrics. We don’t do panels, none of your traditional maternity lines. Everything we do is under the belly, really form-flattering, fitted stuff. Basically, wardrobe that looks exactly like your normal wardrobe. And then our kids line is a bit punk, a little preppy, a little bit rock ‘n roll. Great stuff to wear at the park, and it definitely has attitude. I like to use lots of bright colors. Kind of off-the-cuff, off-the-wall. More personality.
How do you get celebrities to know about your line?
Who thought of the name?
Well, I loved MTV. Viacom is such a great company, and [the people] are all my dearest, best friends. I loved traveling, I loved the music, I loved all the challenges. I was fortunate that I met my husband working there. Shortly after he and I were engaged, when we lived down in San Diego, I continued to work. We actually commuted to LA from San Diego everyday—he would drive with me so we could go in the carpool lane. What a good husband. (Smiles)
I did. I just thought that “childish” really said what we were, and what we were all about. Who are your biggest celebrity clients?
I’ve worked with Gwyneth Paltrow, whom I loved. Heidi Klum, Brooke Shields, Courteney Cox, Jennifer Garner, Britney Spears—and we hear about a lot of celebrities buying our stuff. It’s good because we get them when they’re pregnant and they become so attached and involved with the line that when they have their kids. It’s like a natural progression.

Some of them call us up, hearing about us from someone else. Some go to our stores and buy it off the rack. I worked at MTV for 8 years, so I had a lot of relations that I put into good use when I started my line. I knew that it was important to get the name out there, and I thought that having those connections and having that direct contact would be the best way. How was it like to quit MTV to become a mom and a designer?
When did you decide to quit?
It came to a point in my life that after working for almost ten

years for someone else that I wanted to start a family and do something for myself and not be so committed to a job—as wonderful as it was. My husband traveled a lot and I didn’t want to be stuck in one space. During my pregnancy, I was out on tour. It was the middle of summer, and I was just miserable. I felt like crap, I gained 50 lbs, and it was just like nothing made me look or feel good. I just came up with this idea that it would be great to have a maternity line that mirrored what you would wear outside of those 9 months. What are your goals for yourself?
To be the best wife and parent I can be. I think there’s no more important job in the world. I was really lucky because I grew up with a mom and dad that were always around. They really put everything aside to raise my sister and I, and I think that’s the most important thing you can do for your kid.

Mark Hoppus How does it feel to be nominated as one of BC’s 50 Hautest Dads?
Very cool! Very cool to be a part of the top 50 Hautest Dads. I’m stoked. That’s rad. Were you surprised that you got nominated?
Hell, no! Look at me! (Laughs) Actually, yeah. Because I’m just like a skateboard, punk-rock guy at heart, so that’s cool. If you get picked, would you buy the editors lavish gifts and shower them with front row tickets to concerts? Or just the opposite?
(Laughing) I would definitely buy them lavish gifts, private jet flights to wherever they wanted to go. Hawaiian vacations, dinners at Matsuhisa—that type of thing. [Editor’s note: Mark did make it to the top 50]

Do you consider yourself stylish?
bought Jack?
I don’t even really think about it. I just wear what I love and wear what I’ve worn since I was in high school. I’ve always come from the skateboard, punk rock culture, and I’ve always worn clothes from that culture.
Well, he got a 42-inch plasma TV in his room when he was 2 years old. That’s probably the nicest thing that he’s ever gotten.
What’s the toughest role you play, Husband, Dad, or Rock Star?
I think all of them are interesting and fun in their own different ways. I love being a dad. It’s probably the toughest role, but it’s also the most rewarding, and it’s also the best. You don’t get an instruction manual on how to be a parent, so you just do the best that you can and try and raise your kid. It’s the simplest, hardest, and the best thing you can do in the world. What’s the most expensive thing you ever
Are you strict, or are you a spoiler?
I try and do the best balance of strict and spoiling at the same time. I mean, you try and raise your kid with good values and you try and teach him right from wrong, give him the tools to choose when he needs to choose. Some things you gotta be strict on, and at the same time, the kid’s 4-years old, so you want him to have fun in life and enjoy himself. We saw you practically naked in a music video before. How have things changed since you became a father?
It changed me for the better, but it hasn’t affected my band, it hasn’t affected my www.bcmag.ph

work. It’s actually more inspiring. It’s really cool because with the job that I have, I can take my family with me. Skye and Jack came on the road with Blink 182 for an 8-week tour, and they lived on a bus. And it was the best time we had. Jack loved watching the shows. It was really awesome because some nights when we were playing, I’d look over and my kid is on the side of the stage rocking out, jumping up and down having the time of his life, watching all the lights, listening to the music. And other nights, I’d look over, and he’d be completely passed out in my wife’s arms, dead asleep during our show. I’m like, “What? We’re not doing it for you tonight? What’s going on?” (Laughs) How’s it like being married to Skye?
It’s great being married to Skye. She’s beautiful and she’s really smart. She’s very talented. She’s challenging. It’s fun to talk to her and we laugh a lot. How did you guys meet?
She used to work on MTV and she booked Blink 182 on a show called “Making The Video.” And we were in a dance studio on 3rd St. trying to learn dance moves for this video where we were parodying Boy Bands. And she came upstairs, and I was dressed in spandex and a headband. (Laughs) And she fell in love with me! Actually, that’s not true. I asked her www.bcmag.ph

I’d look over and my kid is on the side of the stage rocking out...And other nights, he’d be completely passed out in my wife’s arms, dead asleep during our show. I’m like, “What? We’re not doing it for you tonight? What’s going on? out and she said, “No, I don’t date artists.” So I had to do some convincing to get her to go out with me. Like how?
I took her cellphone and programmed my phone number into it and I said, “You have to call me later tonight if you wanna go out.” And she called. Favorite moment with your family?
We go out to breakfast every single morning before Jack goes to school, and before Skye goes to her job and before I go to the studio. It’s just a good time to hang out and spend some time together before we go. That, and swimming in our pool in the backyard. My favorite time with my family. And Disneyland! Do you have any say in what Jack wears?
He’s kinda in this in-between stage where we pick out clothes for him and he picks out his own clothes. So sometimes we pick out his clothes for him and he wears shorts and a T-shirt, and sometimes he wears clothes for himself and he wears a fireman’s cap, a cape, like 3 or 4 shirts, and a pair of underwear and tries to walk out the house like that. What’s the biggest lesson you can teach Jack?
I think the biggest lesson you can teach your kids is to be respectful of themselves and be kind to others. I think that’s the key. That’s the best and hardest thing you can teach somebody. bc
