editor’s note BC comes to the Philippines We haven’t been back to Manila for more than 5 years because we’ve been quite busy raising a family and building BC Magazine US. Having said that, I am both thrilled and scared to be back—enthused to be in the company of loved ones I haven’t seen in ages, excited to catch up with friends and introduce my little ones to their own, and am again getting used to the much-appreciated household help 24/7. Another mixed feeling is nervousness at your reception to BC Philippines’ launch, which feels like when you’ve just given birth and are waiting to see whether your baby is in perfect health with 10 fingers and toes (and if it’s not too much to ask, absolutely adorable). We thank God that BC US has grown into one of the most respected parenting titles in America today. At this point, additional shout-outs go

I have a ton of stories to share (and can’t wait to), but like any relationship that has a better success rate, I wanted to formally introduce BC to all of you first, the only magazine I know of that is published for the general American market by a bunch of Pinoys who took a leap of faith. As we go along, I’ll tell you more about my family and adventures, which may include something as inane as a recent ‘pants down’ moment at a restaurant—where, I, the germaphobe—forgot to pull-up my harem pants while trying to rush my youngest

daughter out after we used a public restroom. I opened the door wide to see one of the waiters witness my undies in all its splendor. Must have hurt his eyes. Anyway, my heartfelt thanks go out to all the stunning moms (and dad), plus all these adorable children, who made this issue extra special with their beauty and inspiring qualities. BC: Which grown-ups in Sesame Street are you closest to? E: Elmo loves all of his grown-up friends on Sesame Street. Elmo

thinks Maria and Luis are so cool! One time, Maria fixed Elmo’s broken tricycle wheel. BC: Can you tell us more about your mom and dad?

Elmo’s daddy is the smartest monster in the whole wide world, and he plays a mean trumpet! Sometimes Elmo gets to play the violin while daddy plays the trumpet. Elmo loves his mommy, too. She reads Elmo a story every night before bedtime, and then they both kiss Elmo nighty-night. BC: Who is better at tickling—mommy or daddy? E: It’s a tie! Elmo loves being tickled!

Renowned fantastical designer, John Galliano–and powerhouse brand, Diesel–team up to add savvy to the children’s clothing business

eing the first-ever British designer to head a French haute couture house (LVMH), this GibraltarianSpanish designer to Madonna, Charlize Theron, Kylie Minogue, etc., leapt into somewhat uncharted territory: creating new shapes for kids’ style. His first, 180-piece children’s collection was so well-received that the line is now into its third year. “I wanted to use the Galliano DNA and create a new uniform for 4 to 14-year olds,” states the artist. “I wanted to create a strong identity, use signature Galliano themes, and give them a new world to explore. I wish I’d had these sort of things when I was growing up. I didn’t realize it could be such fun!” See how Diesel’s Renzo Rosso and Galliano think back and discuss their fond memories of youth—sealing their 5-year collaboration for the Galliano Kids Collection.

Renzo Rosso: What was your favorite color when you were a kid? John Galliano: Blue—for the sky and the sea, and the faraway lands that it could take me to. Blue is the color you see when you gaze out of the window and look to far away to find adventure. JG: What was your favorite subject at school? RR: History and Geography. JG: What did you dream of being when you were at school? RR: When I was a child, my dream was to work for a company in a role just one step higher than a normal worker. RR: What’s the best souvenir from your childhood? JG: My friends, my family, moving to London, and learning to flamenco! Childhood’s what shapes and inspires you—mine was very rich from the walk to school, to what I learnt. I think you should be open to adventure— it’s what helps define the person you are to become. Life’s a rollercoaster. JG: What was your favorite ride at the fair? RR: The merry-go-round! RR: Did you wear bandanas when you were a kid as well? JG: All pirates grow up learning how to tie a bandana. I love hats, caps, headgear—always have—and doubt I will ever grow out of it. You should never be afraid to be different. RR: What did you want to become when you were a child? A king, a pirate, or a fashion designer? JG: I wanted to be me! I think that is the best ambition to have! I wanted to have fun and never grow up—I have managed to achieve this, and see the world, and live my dreams! JG: If you could go back to school now, what would you study? What would you change? And what would you tell the kids in your class? RR: I would choose the same textile and design school that I went

to, because it gave me a 360° education in the fashion world. If I changed something this time, I would also finish university so I’d also have a complete education on the managerial side of the business. I would advise kids in my class, or now, to choose a subject that they have a strong passion for, and make their daily job out of it. This way you will be happy for sure, because everyday of your life you’ll be doing something you really love. JG: What made you want to do this kids line with us? Why Galliano, and why kids? RR: Having experienced being a young father myself, I was a pioneer in developing a kid collection, which included clothes that 25 years ago did not even exist in the market. I consider John Galliano very similar—he is part of the premium fashion world, and I admire him the most because he is able to bring constant innovation and freshness to this high-end kids collections. bc Premiere Issue

Originally built in 1921 for a movie studio where it was used in several silent films and then literally moved to Beverly Hills in 1926, locals say it was supposed to be demolished long ago, but a benefactor bought the house just to keep it open as a Beverly Hills landmark, open only once a year. (Trivia: you’ll see it cameo in the movie Clueless.) The owner hands out candy to all who ask—including the non-children who dare—greets the passersby while music and the host is heard

through the loudspeakers, and pulls out all the stops when it comes to decor. If you have some time to spare before the action, a short-drive away is Mr. Bones’ Pumpkin Patch (it’s on West Hollywood, but still borders BH). Be ready with small bills if you want to expedite the paying process so you can immediately pick, carve, and design your own pumpkins, shop for ghoulish paraphernalia, take the kiddies on wagon rides, climb up haystacks, hang out inside a giant pumpkin, let the bigger tykes

go light-headed down a tall inflatable skull slide (if you’ve got a little thrill-seeker, take note of the $1 per slide), ride a tall wooden horse, cuddle some animals at the petting zoo, and act scared together at the giant monsters that guard over the fun patch. It might not enrich culturally as much as a trip to a local museum will, but Halloween in Beverly Hills is something our family will always cherish. The laughs, squeals, running around, and all-around feeling of peace and happiness will always go down on my books as some of the best of our October 31st’s. bc

is important to note that the above quote was spoken by a comic, and a man at that. Clearly, he will never find himself in the shoes of ladies like ourselves who have to live with the effects of wanton abandon boozing during our pregnancy. Tread lightly if you want to talk about this during a get-together with friends and family, as it can ignite lengthy discussions. More women nowadays have been found to consume alcoholic drinks while they’re pregnant, and are celebrating a more European lifestyle where expectant moms down a glass of wine occasionally. Certain reasons have to do with stress relief, having a hard time quitting the lifestyle, peer pressure (other moms who drank with “success” are very casual about egging other pregnant moms on), as a way to fall asleep, etc.

In the U.S., it has been found that every year, 1 in 750 babies suffer from Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) from mothers who consistently drank throughout their pregnancy, and 40,000 are born with Fetal Alcohol Effects (FAE). FAS has been associated with low birth weight, facial abnormalities, poor social and learning skills, to behavioral problems. But these can also be attributable to genetics, the mom’s poor eating habits, drug use (both physicianprescribed and addictive), and a general case of nature vs. nurture— b c PHILIPPINES { OCT-NOV 2010 } bcmag.ph

so we’re back to square one. It is also difficult to diagnose how much alcohol is too much because of the limited tests that may be administered on an expectant mom without harming the fetus. This is why kids with FAE are normally undetected, and it only manifests when behavioral problems are exhibited during the course of their childhood. But what extent of this can be alcohol-related rather than a direct result of “mana” or the child’s upbringing in the home? Wikipedia reports state that, “Alcohol easily passes the placental barrier, and since the fetus is less equipped to eliminate alcohol than its mother, the fetus tends to receive a high concentration of alcohol, which lingers longer than it would in the mother’s system. Mothers who drink during the first trimester of pregnancy have kids with the most severe problems because that is when the brain is developing. The connections in the baby’s brain don’t get made properly when alcohol is present. Of course, in the early months, many women don’t even know they’re pregnant.” To err on the side of caution would generally be a good rule to follow—especially with another life involved. Because of the lack of tangible evidence available to help make an informed decision about minimal drinking during gestation, you’ll just have to trust in your maternal instincts. bc Premiere Issue

Although he states that his lone parenthood was probably the reason they picked him to do the show, it was also the reason he almost begged off. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Everybody knows your child comes first. ow the better-half of Molly Malaney (the runnerup contestant he chose over a different, thenfiancée), Jason happily shares that his new wife and son get along tremendously. “Ty is like a ‘sports-aholic,’ and Molly is a sports-girl, so they get along pretty well. They haven’t quite left me out of their activities yet, but they’re probably close.” Because his ex traveled for the first three years of their child’s life and was going through her own problems, Ty spent a lot of time with Jason, even if they were awarded a 50-50 custody. He greatly values his relationship with Ty’s mother nonetheless, and shares that, “She’s a great mom, so some people would say that I’m not a single parent.” However, Jason adds that, “Whether you’re a dad that only sees his kid every other weekend and you don’t know what to do, or you’re somebody whose spouse passed away and you’re thrown into that situation, we all have issues.” Since he has the full support of two important women in his life—his ex, and now, Molly—the handsome TV star remembers the struggles he went through, and in turn created an online resource and community for single parents called Jason’s Place.

Even though his separation from Ty’s mom was difficult in the beginning, it was his boy who got him through it. “I think that my favorite moment as a parent is probably a year after my ex left. Ty saw I was having a tough day, and I was sitting on the couch, crying and bumming out, and he came up to me and just started hugging me. He said, “Daddy, why are you sad?” And it was the realization where we had been through so much stuff on our own that we had a bond that we probably wouldn’t have had otherwise. Instructions: 1. Slice pan de sal loaves into half horizontally, and lightly flatten each with your palm. Chop fresh onion stalk and set aside. 2. Slice quickmelt cheese into thin sticks. Slice the ham into 2-centimeter thick strips. 3. Spread two teaspoons of spaghetti sauce on each pan de sal half. Layer in the ham strips and cheese sticks. 4. Place two pieces of sliced black olives and fill in the hole with onion stalks. Slice the small tomato into strips. Lay out two strips above each olive eye for ‘eyebrows.’ 5. Lay them down on a pan and bake in a preheated oven at 350º F for about 10 minutes, or until cheese is melted and the bread is toasty. 6. Take a few pieces of table napkins and tear them into strips. 7. Wrap a small plate with the strips of table napkins, making it appear as a mummy plate. 8. Lay out two sliced olives on the plate for eyes, and place the pan de sal babies on the mummy plate. Checklist: Newspaper Poster or Acrylic Paint Cardboard Tissue Paper White Glue Masking Tape

1. Crumple some newspaper into a flattened ball and tighten it up to around the size of your palm. Use some tape to keep the newspaper ball together. 2. Using the same method, create a smaller ball for the wrist and attach it to the palm. 3. For the fingers and thumbs, twist a wad of newspaper strips and fasten them together using tape. Attach these fingers to the palm of your monster hand. 4. Using thinner strips of newspaper create veins and attach them to the wrist unevenly, to create an effect of a dismembered arm. 5. Cut out some semicircles with jagged edges using cardboard for the nails. Glue or tape the nails to the tips of the fingers. 6. Mix equal parts of glue and water. Lay strips of tissue over the hand to cover it completely. Brush the tissue over with glue and water mixture. Lay out your monster hand to dry. 7. Using acrylic or poster paint, color your monster hand with various shadesâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;the weirder, the better! Be creative and add in some details. 8. Let the paint on your monster hand dry, and watch it come alive. Some balloons are made of 100% biodegradable latex, a natural material from the sap of rubber trees.

1. Take a used ping-pong ball and draw a small circle on it using a pencil. This will be your eye's pupil. 2. Draw another circle around the small circle. This area will be the eye's iris. 3. Color that area with green, blue, brown or any desired eye color. Use white paint to create shades and make the iris look more real. 4. Take a few pieces of differently colored balloons and use them to create veins for the dismembered eye. 5. Using a pair of scissors, cut thin, long strips from the balloons, making sure the ends are pointed. 6. Repeat this process for the different colored balloons. 7. Take your eyeball and paint on glue onto the edges of its iris. Attach the balloon strips, making sure that the pointed edges are on the side of the iris. 8. Using red colored markers, draw extra thin veins on the side of the iris. Leave the eye in unusual places and catch your family and friends freak out!

The eternally-beautiful and sexy model-mom says that being a parent is most glorious—so much so that she wrote a poem for and about her daughters which is printed onto a scarf that is included in one of her designs for the launch collection of Eden, a fantastic maternity line that transcends childbirth. On the topic of motherhood, Bianca says that, “You kind of tap into another side of you. It’s also coupled with the bliss and happiness that comes with being with your baby. I feel that I am my most beautiful really being a mother, because there’s no pressure—no matter what you do, your child just looks at you with these eyes—and you just feel like everything’s fantastic.” She isn’t one to give too much advice, though. “I kinda don’t like getting tips myself. Do a lot of research, and not just stick to one certain frame of mind.” She however sees a difference in children that are breastfed. “If you want a kid that’s less fussy, happier, I would really recommend breastfeeding, baby-wearing, and to explore attachment parenting.”

Her daughter Natassia knows about the many feathers in Bianca’s cap. The little darling declares to her svelte and stunning mom that, “You know what, mommy? You’re really something. You’re a host, model, writer, make-up artist, and...you’re my mommy. You’re just really something.” The hardworking single mother says that her child’s profound love for her is her biggest inspiration. “[Kids] are really amazing. It’s just when you think hindi mo na kaya, they say something that’s just so [awesome]. They are like the natural Prozac of life.” Bianca articulates that, “A child is always a blessing, no matter what anyone says. I stand by the belief that my life has only become so amazing because of her, because I made a choice that I’m gonna make something that was an accident, a positive.”

Dimples is beyond a familiar darling face on TV. She’s an accomplished and well-rounded actress who has appeared in numerous TV shows and movies. Third time’s a charm for this elegant and lovely momma, who, believe it or not, was already showing a bump when we did this photo shoot. Absolutely glowing with love for her little ones, she tells of her surprise pregnancy, “It really caught us off-guard, but we feel really blessed by it. It’s been my most uncomfortable one so far in terms of the nausea in the first trimester, but things are better now. The challenge is taking care of my 7- and 2-year old. Your energy levels are just not the same when you’re pregnant.” But despite the setbacks, she wouldn’t have it any other way. Knowing that her kids will soon leave the nest, Ria tries to “spend time with my son in the morning while his older sister’s in school, and when my daughter comes home, it’s more time with her. Around dinner time I wrap things up because I’m gonna work, which is at night for my newscast. I take them with me when I run errands, and they’re happy to jump in the car and go to the bank, mall, or the supermarket, thankfully. The doe-eyed beauty speaks with a warm, pearly smile beneath the big, movie star sunglasses—showing off that grin that landed her the toothpaste commercial that would eventually launch her career as one of the country’s most famous actresses. Dawn asks us if they can possibly stay in another room with her baby’s nannies while she does her make-up, in the hopes of prolonging her daughter’s afternoon nap. The production will also bring her to Singapore’s Esplanade Theater following its Manila engagement. Dawn is also actively involved in socio-civic work, which she takes as another opportunity to involve her children in, teaching them how to make a difference in their own little ways. Since they say the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, we expect a great future for Jacobo and Ayisha, judging from the full life of love and success that their mom determinedly leads.

Describe your years growing up as a child. What is your best memory?

My best [childhood] memories are the ones spent with my family, particularly with my brother, George. He is two years younger than me, and we were constant playmates. We shared the same bedroom and slept in adjacent beds. Some funniest memories were when the lights would go out at bedtime, we would quietly play in the dark. I used to tell him scary stories just to torment him, because he would become so afraid that he would ask to crawl into my bed. I would scare him more with horror stories and we would kick each other, as he trembled and I laughed. We also had fun times playing with our father when he would come home early from work in the afternoons. Then we would all take our naps together in my parents’ bed, tired from all the playful screaming and running around. Sounds like wonderful times. Let’s fast-forward to your husband, Anton—how is he like? How did you meet?

Anton and I met through common friends, when we were just in our late teens. We would occasionally hang out as a mixed group, attending parties together or going to the disco. Anton is very personable, he enjoys engaging others in lively conversations. He is friendly and welcoming with new acquaintances, and a wonderful party host to his friends. He is also very responsible when it comes to his work and career, he spends many hours working sometimes until late at night. He is a loyal friend too. What is that one thing about Anton that fascinates you most? He has a good knack and knowledge of the world around him. He is adept at dealing with different kinds of people who possess different kinds of personalities and backgrounds. And yet he can so easily blend in. How would you describe him as a father?

A very protective and responsible one. Anton seems to know how to balance disciplined upbringing with healthy lenience. Are you done with two kids, or would you like to add more?

How we wish we could have more—we wouldn’t mind having five children because we both enjoy being in a large family. But because of the lateness, it seems that we would have to just settle for a smaller brood. Both my pregnancies have been very difficult to keep. My reproductive immune problems kick-in the minute I discover I am pregnant, which necessitates constant monitoring, medications, and daily injections to help support the pregnancy. It does take a huge toll on me physically. I suffer from gestational diabetes and hypertension. Anton and I are already very grateful for our two children, after all, we have a boy and girl. And what a wonderful pair your kids are. One of the major decisions and priorities in bringing up kids is schooling. How do you help with Jacobo’s schoolwork, especially now when the curriculum is much harder?

I work my schedule around the needs of my children and husband. I make it a point to be home every afternoon to see to it that Jacobo’s homework and assignments for the week are accomplished. In

A well-cooked, scrumptious meal; 90-minute body massage; undisturbed sleep; taking trips abroad with, or without, the kids; shopping; and hanging out with my husband’s cousins and their kids.

Do you think learning Mandarin is beneficial?

What are your must-haves as a mom?

I think learning any one or two more languages is always a plus factor for children these days—whether that is Spanish, Mandarin, or even French. Let’s face it, the world has become a smaller place in this high-tech age. Within the next 50 years, we will observe more leaps and bounds in the business communities all over the world. Learning an extra one or two foreign languages will always be helpful in communication. It will also be easier to teach this to children while they are still young and their brain capacity is still continuing its development.

I must have at least 7 hours of shut-eye a day, or else I’m brain-dead. I have sunblock and sneakers to help me run around with the kids all day—and I need my trusted nannies for the kids when I’m too tired to run around with them all day. I must have breakfast before leaving home, no matter how early that is, or I can’t function well. I must have well-balanced meals daily, or I’ll just go bonkers. I must have my Thermos of water with me wherever I go, and have it refilled regularly because I drink like a fish. My small “Girl Scout kit” in my handbag, which includes baby cologne, hand sanitizer, tissue, lip balm, oil blotting paper, white flower oil, hairbrush, extra BandAids, first aid gel, headache tablets. I must have ME-time—to read the daily broadsheets, get my nails done, hair treatment, dance ballet, weekly massage, Marie France and Facial Care treatments, study my acting craft—to remain happy and content.

On time management, how are you able to squeeze in your new play despite parenthood, career, and charity work?

I make preparations for important projects early on. The children have their own schedule of activities that include school, playtime, and family time. Fortunately, I have trusted nannies for each of them that are trained to keep a close watch on their health and development. As for my musical—play rehearsals are only 7-9 hours daily, so I have some wiggle room for other obligations. I make sure our weekends are free for the family to spend together. And for my socio-civic work, I try to include my children in my visits to the hospices whenever possible, as well as teach them along the way about the world we live in. My husband and I are of the belief that our children will gain much from this exposure. I think it is also important that parents teach their kids very early on about imbibing this culture of “kawang-gawa,” or social awareness. This helps to expand their minds and hearts, preparing them to be the next generation of leaders and shakers of the world. What’s a typical weekend like with your family?

Saturday lunches are held at the home of my parents-in-law, which stretches until the mid-afternoon. Our children play with their cousins and take their afternoon naps together, while the adults sit around the living room catching up with one another. Sometimes we might think of seeing a movie together, and then end up back at home having dinner again with the same company. On Sunday’s it’s time spent with my side of the family. Anton and I like to choose a good restaurant to eat at with my mom, and sometimes with my aunt and uncle when they happen to be in town. Anton and I also just enjoy the day catching up on movies we have missed at the theaters by watching them on DVD, and loafing around the house—occasionally dozing off to catch up on sleep. We hear mass in the afternoon as well. What are indulgences for yourself, your husband and kids?

A mother’s love is heroism. The fact that a woman decides to commit her whole being to raising and caring for a little, helpless baby is on its own, a great contribution to the human race—but even more so when her child ends up playing an important and positive role in society later in his life, then charges it to his mother’s influence. That’s the bonus part. What is your proudest mommy moment?

I am always proud when other people bring to my attention my children’s accomplishments, both great and small. Like when people notice how well-behaved Jacobo is, and is always courteous. And when some notice how alert and outgoing Ayisha is at the toddler group www.bcmag.ph

class she attends. Whenever I see their developments, I heave a sigh of relief and thank God for the reassurance that, so far, I’m still doing a good job as a mom. Most embarrassing mommy moment?

I’m embarrassed to say that I can’t even think of one such moment. My children rarely give me cause, and perhaps my forgetfulness is just in the way at the moment. Best memory as a mom?

The seven to eight months I was pregnant with both Jacobo and Ayisha, respectively. While staying pregnant wasn’t all that comfortable, physically, I decided I would enjoy it in both journeys—and I really did. I’ll also never forget while I was pregnant with Ayisha, Jacobo was always fussing over me—how good I look, how comfortable I’m sitting, etc. Jacobo once told me, “Mama, you’re so sexy.” To which I replied, “Aww, really, darling? You’re so sweet to say that! Really, I am? Even if Mama looks fat now?” Then, with much enthusiasm, he came back with the cutest, unforgettable, one-liner: “Yes, Mama, you’re so fat and sexy!” I almost fell off my chair from laughing! There is one other sweet memory of Jacobo while I was still pregnant with Ayisha. He got used to watching me administer my own injections—I had a combined 6 heparin and insulin injections daily—on my thighs and on my belly. One night, I was agonizing over another one because I was feeling so weary over the bruises and the seemingly unending daily physical discomfort. Jacobo saw me crying as I was attempting to shoot the needle into my skin. He leaned over to me in bed and said, “Mama, one day I’ll become a doctor. So I can inject you, and there will be no owie.” That pronouncement made my eyes misty, and it just made the succeeding weeks of needleriddled pain less annoying. Such heartwarming stories. Alright, let’s talk about your personal style a bit.

Simple and practical. I am careful about dressing appropriately for my age, and what suits the occasion. I prefer uncomplicated, elegant cuts that have very little or no embellishments. When it comes to clothes, I am drawn more to the workmanship and the specialty of the fabrics. I choose tried and tested brands that I know go a long way. I stay away from the “it” thing of the moment.

How do you dress your kids?

I like to dress them in the most traditional styles. Once in a while we could dabble on faddish outfits, but we still lean towards the more reserved and formal wear. However, there are some fashion styles I am quite definite about not having them try—like for instance, sexy adult-styled outfits for Ayisha, and scruffy shirts and pants for Jacobo. Who is your parenting role model?

I channel both my mom and mother-in-law, and I take cues from their parenting styles. Motto as a parent?

A design haven spun from her very mind—every surface is created with her own personal flair, which she describes as “contemporary.” She enjoys playing around with “vibrant, vivid colors with interesting key design elements, rich fabrics and perfect proportion.” That would explain the stimulating intensity of the shades and textures, which speak to the observer like true pieces of art. Aside from being a feast for the senses, the Valdes’ enchanting manor is also a versatile space. Like her children, every room in the house is her baby. “It’s the only project in which I can express my taste freely,” she admits, adding that it isn’t just about style, but also about functionality. “I like the loud colors and flexibility of the space to transform into whatever party scene I like.” Being a self-confessed avid collector, Tessa surrounds her home with pieces that inspire her, including those from local painters Egay Fernandez, Ivan Acuña, Joey Ibay, Emmanuel R. Garibay, Cesar Legaspi, and Norman Crisologo. For interior design, she applauds the work of our very own Ivy Almario and Antonio R. Mendoza. Kelly Hoppen and Philippe Starck are her international favorites. “A home is a personal space, so it should show the character of the people living in them,” she explains. “Like the different way I dress, my home shows my expressive taste and love for loud colors.

Most of my walls are contrasting, and the artworks are all colorful. I constantly change my accent pieces so there is always something new to see.” While her home is indeed a reflection of her personality, her unique clothing style mirrors how she is as an individual. To some, she might come off as outrageous, but for people who truly understand fashion and the need to be different, she is truly an icon. “Like I always say, style is just really a personal thing. You can’t fault somebody else for being that particular style,” she muses. “You wanna look boring, fine. I just wanna look like this.” Tessa says that the public isn’t the only one who plays the role of a critic when it comes to her eccentric clothing—even her kids have their own thoughts about the way she dresses. “My boys, they dread parent-teacher [day] because they get scared of what I’m wearing,” she divulges. “But with my girls, especially Athena, she’s so happy. I think it’s a girl thing—that you know your mom is into super loud fashion and stuff like that.” It’s the same case for Tessa’s husband, whom she says has learned to appreciate various shades for clothing. “Dennis said he takes longer now to dress up ‘cause there are so many choices, not like before, just one white shirt—the same thing. thanks to me.” Aside from the many roles that Tessa plays in her everyday life, the one that’s closest to her heart is that of being a mother—a part that she has played for over 20 years now. “I’ve been a mom when there was no cellphone, it was just pagers. I’ve been a mom since Charlie’s Angels was on TV, and not a movie,” she says amusingly. “It’s just really funny to see how I was a single mom for eight years, so I know how it feels to be both mom and dad.” Tessa greatly appreciates the support her family had given her, especially during those child-rearing years with her firstborn, who has grown to become a successful investment banker based in Singapore. She even calls herself a “progressive mom” in this day and age, when the youth have their own culture and language, an era in which mothers and fathers need to make a commitment to meet their children halfway. “Patience is a virtue talaga,” Tessa says of motherhood. “I feel like with rearing kids, you have to find some middle ground. They have to understand you, and you have to understand them. It’s not anymore like before that parenting is, ‘It’s my way or the highway.’ You have to just adapt with the times, and be more understanding that they’re just so advanced now, especially with technology.” But despite the influence of media, Tessa believes that, “They’re still gonna want to have some loving and hugging and stuff. And [for] me, hug them while they’re still huggable and not when they’re like, ‘Mom, stay away from me.’” As for her greatest parenting role model, Tessa says it’s her mother who made the biggest impact in her life. “When all moms in her generation were housewives, [mine] was a working mom,” she says proudly. “She didn’t need to work, but she put up Inquirer, and she still had the time to tutor us. She taught me values of how you have to honor your name and in the end, in spite of everything, it’s the legacy you leave behind. It’s nice to have that sort of role model right next to you.” Tessa adds that her only fear as a mother is prematurely losing her children. “My brother passed away in a motorcycle accident, so I also know how my mom [felt], what she went through.” She adds that because of her brother’s passing, she has learned to count every single day as a blessing, and celebrate even the littlest achievements, a lesson that she is passing on to her brood. “I guess my zest for life, it also manifests in them,” she affirms. For a parent backed with over 20 years of experience, Tessa believes that “there’s no right formula to be a mom. a perfect world

remember walking into the Costners’ modern, minimalist, and refined beachfront home in Santa Barbara, CA. It was a bit after lunch on a cloudy day. The house is situated inside a gated compound that’s impossible to find from the road, unless you knew the passcode and whose residence you were looking for. At that time, they had just bought another property nearby to build their dream house at, one that will be, “A beautiful place where family can gather.” Not that this one was shabby by any means. A larger-than-life sized Peter Beard photo of baby cheetahs in the jungle greets you in the foyer. It was one of our earlier celebrity shoots so I was still feeling my way around. Their patio is steps from the vast ocean, and staring out at it reminds you that the world is majestic. This, after all, is the house of one of the world’s most respected thespians, and is the dwelling of the people most dear to him. The house cleaners were busy with their duties, so we stayed in the family room/Kevin’s office while our photographer set up. It was almost surreal, looking around at their framed family photos, and some of Kevin’s solos when he was a younger (read: very hot) movie star. I was a big Robin

Kevin has a softness that I love, and he has boyish playtimes where a wrestling match could take place.

Hood, Dances with Wolves, (fine, even The Bodyguard and Waterworld) fan, so I felt transported to my teens. Christine, Kevin’s stunning and warm wife, had recently given birth to darling Cayden (who, as you can see, is a dead ringer for his father, and is the eldest of the couples’ three kids together). We were a small crew, and I brought my daughter, Sabina, along with me to the shoot. Chris pulled out the Barney videos for her, to my little girl’s delight. Chris relates that motherhood has changed her outlook in life. “I have discovered a higher appreciation for time, and I think I have begun to see things differently. The giggles, the surprises, and the pleasure Cayden finds in something as simple as clapping of hands together, or spinning the tires on his tipped-over dump truck. I like how he studies faces when he touches noses and cheeks. I love the quiet and tender moments that we share before bedtime—when I know that his belly is full, he’s had his warm bubble bath, and is cozy in his pajamas—ready to have his last play and goodnight story. It is a good feeling, walking out after he has fallen asleep, knowing that he is peaceful and resting. Maybe the biggest lesson was underestimating the love I would feel.
