Feeling Hot, Hot, Hot

owadays, you’ll find that parenting can also be described as one word that never used to be synonymous to it: sexy. Moms and dads all over the world are more hands-on than ever, and lately I find that the best-looking people in the world have offspring. Case in point: Brangelina, who have six children—their appearance at the BAFTAs wearing matching tuxes solidifies that the Pitts still got ‘it’—and they travel the world with all kids in tow (I take the paparazzis’ word for it). It’s also good to note Bennifer (see, The Afflecks), Channa (Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan), Kimye (no need to explain). I guess we would need to include Johnny Depp in the list since he is a dad, despite his new, midlife relationship. Fine, I made up “Channa”—but do you see my point? This issue covers one of the Philippines’ most gorgeous couples—soccer star Anton del Rosario with his equally stunning half—fashion designer, Sam Richelle. Before, it would be uncommon in Catholic countries like ours to marry someone who has a child out of wedlock (I know, because my mother had me), but times have changed—and men are wiser. Moms make, at most times, the best wives because we already have our ‘single-self’ issues set aside. Once there is a child in the equation, we become better versions of ourselves, and are more willing to give and accept love with our whole hearts. In the case of Sam and Anton, the duo is obviously hooked to one another, and needless to say, in love with their son, Myles. Though not Myles’ father biologically, Anton professes his love for the little cutie, and even solidified it on ink—on his body and soon on paper and in court, once they tie the knot late this year. Sam is making a name for herself in fashion, but she is one of

the most down-to-earth women you will ever meet, especially considering her pedigree. She comes across as shy and absolutely agreeable, that you wonder how on earth her familial background doesn’t go to her head. Trish Panlilio of nawwTy’s Kitchen and Papillo Fine Stationers also grace our pages, and add to its beauty just by being on it. A fixture on society folios, Trish is the scion of the Panlilio jewelry family. She is a single mom to 3 [human] boys, and 5 furry ones. Although her hands are full from parenting the lot, she is finding that her passion for cooking is also serving as her latest baby. Since summer means a lot of down time with the kids at home, U.S. TV host, Nancy O’ Dell talks to us about one of her favorite hobbies: crafting. Scrapbooking has become more popular in our shores, and all for good reason—it is a great way to bond with your kids while creating art. Speaking of vacation bonding, I am planning to do way too much baking and cooking with my girls as we launch our little bakery, grocery, café, and deli called Farmery. We have some great fitness ideas that you can try or revisit (Bikram yoga, boxing), especially if you’re someone like myself who cannot find it in her heart to diet. And before I run out of space, let me greet you the best of the coming Mother’s Day! In case you haven’t realized, your job is tough but ultimately the most rewarding. Moms, you rock, and I am privileged to be one of you—three tmes over.

On the beginnings of Stella Cove

I wince at having to use the cliché, but Stella Cove really did start “at the kitchen table” just over [five] years ago, and is now stocked in around 300 boutiques and resorts in 20 countries, including Harrods London, Le Bon Marche Paris, Four Seasons Hawaii, The Fontainebleau Hotel Miami, Harvey Nichols Dubai, as well as being the personal pick of Kourtney Kardashian, and a certain European princess. How the philosophy behind it was formed

At the heart of Stella Cove is that one exquisite swimsuit which we had as a child, that made us stand a little taller, and made us feel like the sun was shining particularly bright for us, inspired by the classic romantic aesthetics of Jackie O, as seen through a modern day perspective. The backdrop to the start was the sudden onset of the banking crisis. Chaos was snowballing, and

uncertainty was looming large. With a background of working in the business side of hotel management, and as an attorney respectively, Amber and I have the unfortunate ability to cynically and critically stare down any idea at the best of times. Perhaps it was the surrounding crisis at the time which caused a sudden shift in our attitudes. The conversation at the kitchen took an unexpected turn along the lines of, Pia: “Let’s make...” Amber: “A really beautiful swimsuit.” With the naive enthusiasm akin to the Scooby Doo gang, we jumped into the car and set off in the vague direction of a factory we had heard of, leaving behind our husbands who were exchanging looks of amusement and alarm in equal measure. Perhaps this is one of the interesting aspects of the human reaction to beauty and great design. A person can be caught up in some heavy ruminations of a practical nature, but will still pick up to admire a particularly shimmering seashell. On the evolution of the brand, and future plans

ringing a fresh perspective to collecting heartfelt memories, Emmy Award-winning entertainment journalist Nancy O’Dell is an advocate for the hobby art. As a prominent TV personality (who is an often fixture in award ceremonies such as The Oscars and Golden Globe), author, and busy mother, Nancy knows how important it is to spend

scrapbooking quality time with her children. In her 2009-released book, Full of Love, Nancy discusses her passion for scrapbooking, and draws importance to the ability of family albums to help nurture children who are happier, more confident, and secure. Nancy shares how she inherited the love for the craft from her mother and grandmother, who have passed on to her a special kind of heirloom—their very own family albums. Her admirable

career has also provided her with a platform to spread the word on another cause close to her heart—the Muscular Dystrophy Association and Betty’s Battle, an organization she founded following her mom’s passing due to complications related to ALS—all while she cares for her loves—almost-7-year old daughter, Ashby; two stepsons, Tyler and Carson; and husband and tech firm executive Keith Zubchevich.

BC: As the founder of Betty’s Battle (bettysbattle.org) and the Vice President and National ALS Ambassador to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, can you tell us more about the causes? N: My mother, Betty, was literally one of the sweetest people

who has ever walked this earth. I want to humanize ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease), so people understand what it does both to those who have it, and to their families. It is a horrific disease and I want to do whatever I can to stop it from taking somebody else’s loved one. I founded Betty’s Battle with the Muscular Dystrophy Association in honor of my mom, who was always one to put others before herself. So it is not surprising that even in her passing, she is still helping people. MDA was there for me and my family every step of the way during Mom’s illness. They provided expert medical care, told us about the latest ALS research and clinical trials, and kept us informed about what might happen next. So I know I have a wonderful partner in this fight. My hope is that MDA’s Betty’s Battle will be able to fund the research necessary to find a cure, so other families don’t have to go through this like my family did.

BC: Who is your parenting model? N: No question, my own parents. I couldn’t have asked for better

parents. There was never a moment in my life I ever doubted how much they loved me. They were there for every event in my life. I grew up feeling like I was the most loved child in the world, and I know my sister would tell you the same thing. I have the best memories of my mom and dad telling me multiple times in the morning before I would go to school and before I would go to bed, “I love you.” They showed it with actions as well. When my mom passed, she left around 50 photo albums, and my dad handed them down to me. As I went through them, I felt that same love all over again. She had scrapbooked everything I had ever done, every poem I attempted to write, every piece of artwork, every A+ paper. That’s how they always were. If I can be a quarter of the mom my mom was to me, I’ll still be a great mom.

BC: What is your best memory as a mother yourself? N: Everything! I say one of the best things about having children

is you get to experience your own childhood again through their eyes. Disney World feels like you’re right back there as you bcmag.ph

get to see the same excitement in your children’s faces that you remember feeling as a kid. Some of my best memories are coming home after work. Seeing the big smile suddenly appear on your child’s face when she sees you and then having her run into your arms...there is nothing better than that! Just the other day, I had a full work day and then an event right after. By the time I got home, Ashby was already asleep. But she woke up in the middle of the night. She saw I was home and said to me, “Mama, I missed you so much today.” My heart completely melted! BC: That is so sweet...As a host, journalist and author, you seem to be a very busy woman. N: It is tough to juggle it all, but you

have to make time for the most important thing in your life, which is family.

Jobs will come and go, but family will always be a part of you. And you have to make sure it is a lot of time, and quality time you spend with them. My husband, long ago, gave me the biggest and best piece of advice: Be in the moment. I had turned down a work assignment to be with my family and I was fretting over what my boss would think. My husband told me, “If you’re spending all the time worrying about a decision you’ve made, then you are not in the moment and you’re not making the most of the precious time you made the decision to spend.” So it is important to be present and really enjoy. BC: You graduated Summa Cum Laude majoring in Marketing in Clemson University. Did you ever see yourself as an entertainment host/author/journalist? N: I actually didn’t plan for this career.

It’s ironic because I can’t see myself doing anything differently now, as I love being a journalist. Fortunately, I discovered that early on. I started out in TV sales at a small TV station, WPDE, in Florence/Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Because it was a small market, it didn’t require a lot of experience to be a reporter. I started doing some reporting on the weekends for them, and realized I really liked the fact that it was a different job every day, depending on the story you had. I loved the fact that it was so interesting, everchanging, and that I learned something every assignment when reporting. I have always yearned to learn and have a curiosity about things...so a career in journalism works well for me, since I get to ask questions! BC: You won Miss South Carolina in bcmag.ph

1987, and you’ve been hosting some beauty pageants as well. Please tell us more about those experiences. N: I know that beauty pageants can

have a negative connotation to some, but I have to say there were so many things I learned during my year as Miss South Carolina that have helped me today. I spent that entire year traveling around the state and country, speaking at various events. The public speaking experience came in handy for what I do for a living now. It was also an event in my life that matured me, as you can wind up having a lot of responsibility. I even traveled to Japan on an international trade relations program. Also, that year taught me that you can take a platform and use it for doing good. I am grateful I learned that at an early age.

BC: What inspired you to write a book on

ad the word about something that is so valuable to families and children. So that’s the biggest reason I wrote Full of Love. When some people hear the word “scrapbooking,” they think it’s all glue and glitter and way too time-consuming. I wanted to let the world see that you can do it easily and quickly, because those albums are so vitally important in making children feel loved, valued and confident. In one chapter of the book, I interview renowned psychologist, Dr. Kenneth Condrell, who told me that there are few tools more powerful or effective than family albums or scrapbooks in helping to raise confident, happy, welladjusted kids! So it was so easy for me to write about something about which I

am so passionate. BC: What are your other must-haves as a mom? N: I’m not just saying this because

it is a part of the new line, but my Hummingbird tote has totally become a mommy must-have for me. You spend so much time in the pediatrician’s and OBGYN’s offices and I, of course, was making baby albums galore during that waiting time. (I have actually even done albums in between interviews at the Oscars; kid you not!). Also, you have to get Celine Dion’s Miracle CD. It’s amazing and has the most beautiful songs about children—and, of course, Celine has one of the most beautiful voices in the world. A friendly warning though—you might want to have a box of tissues handy as you will get so sentimental about your children. bc

Tell us more about the design process of Baby Fashionistas’ clothing line. How do you choose the design, fabric, and materials that go into each dress? Prim: Design usually starts with a col-

lection that we envision, and then we source for materials that would be appropriate for the styles. That is usually how the design process goes. But there are also times when a particular fabric or material catches our fancy, and then everything else just goes from there.

What does the summer collection look like? P: We are coming out with lots of neons

and prints, still a lot of pinks, cool and airy designs that look cute, but very

comfortable. Top three inspirations for your brand? P: I started the brand because of my

daughter Bea, who is now 11 and is too big to wear some of the designs of Baby Fashionistas. But she remains to be the number 1 inspiration for the brand. I now have another baby girl—she is 2 years old, and she now takes the place of her sister when it comes to trying on samples of new styles. Both of them make design suggestions, helping me understand better what girls their age like. Second inspiration would be the little girls who love shopping in my stores—it warms my heart whenever I see little girls twirling around happily

while trying on clothes. So we keep them in mind during the design development. And customer feedback is really what make us strive to do well. As a designer, I make sure that I am exposed to different design trends abroad, and the lack of nice dresses for girls here in the country inspires me to make more choices available for fashion savvy moms and little girls. Biggest challenges of a mother and entrepreneur? P: The obvious is really time manage-

ment. But as the business continues, mothers would definitely find ways to be available to her children while taking care of the business as well. I am, of bcmag.ph

P: The thing is, I started Baby Fashionis-

tas because it is something that answers to a demand that I had, and it makes me happy. So from the very beginning, I was never really very profit-oriented. I just wanted to make beautiful clothes available for girls, who, like my daughters, love fashion. So I think that kind of reflects in the products we offer in our stores. They may be more expensive than most local and international brands, but our customers remain loyal because they believe in the quality of the brand. What type of customers are attracted to your store? P: Definitely moms, lolas, ninangs, and

titas who are into fashion, and are so in love with dressing the little girls in their lives. We have customers who call the stores and ask that all new arrivals be reserved for them, without even seeing the new designs yet. The trust that they have for Baby Fashionistas is very heartwarming. Describe the journey of your brand in three words and explain why. P: Exciting, inspiring, challenging.

It is a business and pressure to offer new products can sometimes be very difficult, but I am doing something I love and I believe it is such a blessing to be able to make others happy. How do you see yourself and the brand in five years? Are you looking to design clothes for boys as well? P: I always say that Baby Fashionistas

makes me happy, and as long as I am inspired, the dresses would reflect it. We do offer customized clothing for girls and boys, but we have no plans of offering ready-to-wear boysâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; clothing in our stores just yet. bc

ith all the stress and problems that comes with the territory of parenthood, it can be difficult to keep zen and to keep a healthy lifestyle. However, we can achieve both (or at least take a step closer) at Bikram Yoga Alabang. The state-of-the-art Bikram studio, which opened in 2010, is a direct franchise of the Bikram Yoga studio headquarters in Los Angeles. and efforts are geared towards raising their children. A lot of them don’t get enough sleep to begin with and then later on, develop a hard time sleeping. Yoga aims to balance the body, it aims to balance your life in general. You come to class for 90 minutes, work on your health. Of course, it’s not the easiest 90 minutes that you will have. Some people don’t know why they keep on coming back. They’re still complaining about the heat, but they feel better. A lot of them claim thattheir sleep becomes more regular.” Bikram Yoga is, hard as it may to believe, essentially a 90-minute beginner’s class, with 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises. It’s also a way to gain weight—yes, others should be so lucky—depending on your fitness goal,

as yoga is all about achieving balance in life. BC cover mom Amanda Griffin-Jacob is a student in this 120 sqm studio (which can accommodate up to 60 pax), and shared that she lost her excess baby weight through Bikram. Their teachers don’t prescribe a certain diet for their students. You make that choice yourself. “You (will) want to make the change for the better so I think that’s the most effective way. It’s not someone telling you to do it but you, yourself, making that change,” Ginger shareds. Although the idea of spending an hour and a half in a hot room may sound intimidating to most, Bikram Yoga is, in fact, scientifically-designed to suit all ages and fitness levels. They have

a 2-week beginner’s class to gradually ease you into the regular program, and have had students as young as 5, and as mature as those in their groovy 70’s. If the heat ever becomes unbearable, students step out for a bit, and most if not all, finish the remainder of the class. If the class gets packed, Ginger assures that, “We do our best to adjust the temperature so that people still get the 40 degrees and the required humidity for you to be able to practice.” Bikram also reduces the effects of aging, and increases mental clarity. In the long run, practicing Bikram changes even your diet, because as you become a regular yogi, your body and mind naturally progresses to slowly reject junk and prefer healthier lifestyle choices, and you get your sexy on. bc

nton del Rosario may have risen to fame as an “Azkal,” but he is also one of the most dashing captains of the Kaya Futbol Club, the 18-year old Philippine football organization recognized as one of the only club teams to have defeated football clubs of the Philippine Army, Air Force, and Navy, and have also represented the country in several international tournaments. His fianceé, Sam Richelle, is a gorgeous designer, stylist, and artist. Both grew up in foreign shores— Anton being raised in the U.S., and Sam having lived also in California and schooled in London. Fate brought them together during a serendipitous night out in Manila a couple of years back, with Sam trying to set Anton up with her cousin. Fast forward to now, the couple is planning their coming nuptials towards the end of 2014, which will most likely be held at Sam’s home in Makati. Together, they’re the enviable epitome of fitspiration. It’s hard to believe that Sam’s already a mother—with that lithe, petite frame—to a little charmer who was also such a delight to photograph. missing one or two or more. (Laughs) BC: How is your relationship like with your brothers? A: I actually have 3 brothers—Armand

the eldest, myself, Luis, then Niko. We were raised as a very tight knit family, and up to now, we still are very close. It’s been an amazing 4 years living in the Philippines because not only did I find Sam and Myles, but prior to [this], I had been separated from my family, living in the States, and now we’re all together.

BC: That’s great to know. When did you catch the soccer bug? A: Had to be when I was 6 years old. I

started playing AYSO (American Youth Soccer Organization), which is a “little league” in the States, and got hooked.

BC: What made you decide to pursue soccer as career? A: Growing up, [my brother] Armand

and I were very competitive, and in a way, I idolized him when I was younger, so I always tried to be better than him. Eventually, soccer turned into my passion, and Armand caught my vapors. (Laughs)

BC: Haha! How has playing soccer opened up doors for you? A: Soccer pretty much got me through

ANTON DEL ROSARIO BC: How was it like growing up in the U.S.? Anton: I enjoyed growing up in Ameri-

ca. I call both the U.S. and Philippines my home. It’s two different lifestyles. Living in each country has helped me grow as a person, and become very open minded about different cultures. BC: Growing up abroad, did you have any odd jobs? A: I can’t remember all the different

jobs I’ve worked. Here is my list of jobs to which I can remember in chronological order: Sears sporting good sales clerk, Blockbuster, coach, gym front desk, pizza delivery, valet parker, mover, construction, pro athlete…I think I’m

life. It has made lifelong friends for me, I was able to represent my country, it allowed me to travel the world, put me through college, used it as my therapy when things got stressful, and now I get to do the thing I love professionally!

BC: You were a defender for the Philippine Azkals. What were your fondest memories as an Azkal? A: Aside from representing the Philip-

pines, I enjoyed traveling with all the different teammates through the ages. The team were not just other players, we were a family. My greatest memory was the game that changed it all, Philippines vs Vietnam in 2010 Suzuki Cup, when we beat Vietnam. BC: You’re currently captain for Kaya

I take on a lot of responsibilities. I try to be a big brother to the team. I let all the players know they can rely on me, just like any sibling in a family. As a captain, there is no time to slack off. One must lead on and off the field — be responsible and someone the other players want to look up to.

BC: What are the most valuable lessons you’ve learned as a professional soccer player? A: As a professional, one must act pro-

fessionally. Being part of a team is not just about going out and performing—

it’s about responsibility, trust, passion, family, respect, integrity, and so much more. These are things an athlete— professional or not—learns, which is why I feel it is important to get kids involved in sports or team activities to learn these values.

Some people don’t believe in love at first sight, but being with this girl, I look back to the first day I saw her and could pretty much say I had fallen in love. BC: You treat Myles as your own. How did fatherhood change you as a person? A: Fatherhood has made me be a better

man, and I’m happy to say it. I’m not going to lie, I was a party boy and was never really settled. Now that Myles is in my life, I have a bigger reason—aside from Sam—to come down to reality and change my priorities, making me a more responsible person.

BC: What are your bonding moments with him? A: I love taking Myles to the toy store

and the movies, because it’s what he loves. While watching movies, I probably watch him more than the movie because of the smile he puts on. My most favorite thing to do is looking over to the sideline while playing, and seeing him enjoy himself at my games. BC: What are your aspirations for him? A: I’m not one to force a child into any-

thing. I believe the more freedom you give a kid, the more creative and versatile he or she will turn out to be. Whatever he chooses to do, I’ll support 100%. Hopefully he chooses soccer, haha!

BC: What’s the best part about having Myles? A: He’s the joy in my life! I could

be having the worst day in the world but the moment I walk through the door and hear him scream “Daddy,” I have nothing but a smile on my face.

(Smiles) I lived most of my “growing up” and teenage life in London, which is what I believe is the most important time in your life to experience so many new things and just plainly have fun, because in grade school and high school, you didn’t really have too much to worry about. (Smiles) After graduating high school, I moved to New York for less than a year for college. I went to the Art Institute and finally just decided to move to L.A. to complete my degree in fashion design at FIDM (Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising). After school I was able to intern and experience working in the field that I love in L.A. BC: Why did you move to Manila? S: I moved because I wanted to

be able to help my family with the business, and also start up a business on my own. (Smiles) I am basically trying to build a brand name for myself, work hard at the same time, but also have time to spend with my son, my family. Manila is the best place to do it. If I were to be back in the States, I wouldn’t have as much time with the kid as I wanted. BC: You’ve got such an enviable physique. How do you keep fit? S: Thank you so much! (Smiles

widely) I just love a good cardio workout. I love to run and swim. Growing up, I was a swimmer and a track and field girl, so it is fun for me to keep fit that way. I can run and swim for days. (Smiles) Plus I honestly do just try to keep an active lifestyle, my son definitely is a handful already. BC: You’ve got a lot of tattoos. What’s the story behind them? S: I do have a lot, and they each have

(Smiles) And the tattoo on my leg, the dancing girl with the hibiscus dress was actually a piece inspired by an art piece of the surrealist artist Vladimir Kush. I fell in love with the piece and I had my tattoo artist create something similar, but not copied. It symbolized my very spontaneous, carefree character—and the other rose I have is on my shoulder, which symbolized my commitment to Anton. (Smiles) So I think that was one for the books. BC: Who designed your home? Favorite pieces from your condo? S: M2Builders constructed it, but Anton

Prior to the proposal, he took me on a romantic secluded dinner on a hill to watch the sunset. There was even a row of candles leading up to our table in our little hut in our very secluded area. We had a private chef, waiter, and private

entertainment. We had two men singing us a medley of songs with their Spanish guitars, but he didn’t choose to propose then. After that, he took me to an outdoor bar for some drinks, overlooking this ridiculous view of the ocean and the sky. This bar had levels on top of rocks, it was amazing with the breeze and candles lit up. But he didn’t choose to propose there. It was only when he took me back to the hotel on the sidewalk with people around. (Smiles) We got off the calesa, and then he started playing Journey’s “Faithfully” on his phone, and that’s when he proposed! He said it was to throw me off, and it really worked. I had no idea!

What was it like growing up in the prominent Panlilio clan? Do you have siblings? Who were you closest to? Patricia: In as much as I carry my name

with great pride, our parents raised us in a very simple manner—humble and down to earth. We are a family of 9, which made for a crowded but happy household. [We] grew up being very close to both my parents—I was the youngest—and I suppose that came with perks. My siblings were much older than me, so I was closer perhaps to cousins who were closer in age.

As the daughter of the late jeweler, Fe S. Panlilio, was there any pressure to go into the family business? P: Not at all, as this became the task of

my elder siblings. They pursued studies in gemology, and I chose another path at that age, which was modeling.

aving a baby doesn’t come easy for everyone, and such was the case of Courteney Cox, who battled through several failed pregnancies after she finally gave birth to her beautiful daughter Coco Riley on June 13, 2004—a day after her fifth wedding anniversary with charming then-hubby, David Arquette, with whom she unfortunately separated from in October 2010 and officially divorced in 2012. Coco, a nickname Courteney Cox’s friends gave the latter’s mom (who shares the same moniker, as was the tradition for Southern affluent families) when she was a child, is godchild to Courteney’s Friends co-star, Jennifer Aniston. Speaking of television, one of Courteney’s bigger TV comebacks was as Jules Cobb in Cougar Town, where she plays a real estate agent and single mom—a “cougar”, who decides to try her luck in finding love again.
