Get Out and Explore! By Maude Stephany
hether you live in a large urban centre like Vancouver or in a rural community like Agassiz, there is always something to do. Here are some suggestions to help you explore, experience and get out there. Not everything is free, but some are close. Choose something that suits your lifestyle and your budget. Outdoor activities are a hit in the summer time—there is always something to do in beautiful British Columbia. Rock climbing is

a great past time that you can do anytime and almost anywhere. While Squamish and Whistler may be the climbing meccas of the west coast, there are many out-of the way places that offer you a chance to give bouldering a try. Beginners can try indoor climbing. Water sports are fun anytime. Swimming is always a useful skill and could even save the life of someone you love. Check out white water rafting, kayaking, canoeing and maybe even dragon-boating. If you’re feeling really adventurous, try surďŹ ng or scuba diving. Fishing is a popular pasttime and one that embraces our past. Learn to ďŹ sh, go for a guided trip, or simply try ďŹ shing at a wellstocked pond. Young children enjoy the accomplishment of catching their ďŹ rst ďŹ sh— and there’s nothing like fresh caught ďŹ sh for supper. Be sure to get a license.
The young and the young-at-heart are fascinated with animals. Explore wild bird habitats, nature preserves, and wild animal sanctuaries. The Great Blue Heron Nature Preserve in Chilliwack boasts that it is the home to the only non-migratory Great Blue heronry in North America. Closer to home, you might want to visit the George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary in Delta for a view of the Snow Geese. Are you following the 100-mile diet? Circle Farm Tours (circlefarmtour.com) offer you a chance to return to our agricultural roots. These tours are self-guided, but allow for you to see where our food is produced. You can pick up the guides at many organic foods stores in the area. With a bit of time behind the wheel, you might ďŹ nd yourself at a ďŹ sh farm, a dairy, a garden centre, a

corn maze, a berry ďŹ eld, an orchard or a pumpkin patch. You may see birds of prey, llamas, alpacas, turkeys, trout, salmon, or goats. All it takes is a sense of adventure, and a bit of time. If you decide to take up outdoor activities, it never hurts to learn some basic orienteering—and it’s a great way to help your child learn what to do to stay safe in the great outdoors. And if you already own a GPS device for your car, you too can misuse high-tech gadgets to go ďŹ nd “Tupperwareâ€? at a geo-cache. Your children won’t be asking you “are we there yet?â€? instead they’ll be begging you to ďŹ nd “just one more cache!â€?
Cultural interpretive centres abound in the Lower Mainland. Remember to visit historic sites such as Historic Fort Langley, and the Gulf of Georgia Cannery in Langley. To experience First Nations history and culture, check out Xay:tem in Mission or the Squamish Lilwat Cultural Centre in Whistler. Visit the Museum of Mining in Britannia Beach, and historic Yale, BC to experience a unique look at our past. Summertime is a good time to take in some great ball games—and to take on other summer sports. While swimming is often thought of as a summer sport, there is no bad time to start. Jump in while the water is friendly.
Take up tennis, badminton, lawn bowling, cricket—whatever it takes to have fun. Vancouver is host to a number of worldclass sites that families can enjoy year round. Stanley Park is home to many attractions and activities, from the Aquarium to Totem poles, there is a lot to see and do. Visit the Vancouver Museum, the Maritime Museum and the HR MacMillan Space Centre. Take in the wonder of the Capilano Suspension Bridge, and ďŹ nd peace at the Dr. Sun Yat Sen Chinese Garden. Touch our past at the UBC Museum of Anthropology, or experience the future at the Telus World of Science and Science World.

Perfect Parties By Maude Stephany hether it’s your child’s first birthday or their 16th, here are some pointers to make the event something that will be memorable and fun for everyone. Your child’s ďŹ rst birthday, if you’re honest, has more to do with you as the parent. The ďŹ rst birthday is a milestone, a celebration of one year of parenthood and a chance for your little one to spend time with loved ones. Invite close family and those most familiar to your child for the visit; schedule the event at your child’s best time of day to make for more smile and photo opportunities. Remember that not every year needs to have an extravagant birthday party. Depending on your culture, you may have a special birthday party for the ďŹ rst, ďŹ fth or seventh year, the tenth or thirteenth, the sixteenth or the eighteenth. Celebrate the day, certainly. But don’t get caught up in having to make a big deal of every year. Marking the day with family and friends and celebrating your child is the point. When your child is two, they have started to develop some motor skills and are now running around. At this age, children are active, and inquisitive. Keep themes to a minimum—a simple colourful party will go over well with parents and friends. Infant friendly playtime at the park or in the yard offers the perfect setting: supervision, food and fun. Theme parties are a big hit with children aged three to ďŹ ve years old. Incorporating

your child’s favourite char characters, or theme, makes it easy to organize around and plan games, activities and snacks. Try a princess, space, ďŹ shing or police theme, or really any theme that you or your child can imagine. By the age of seven, most children have passed the fascination with princesses and police cars. At this time, many parents opt Celebrate the day, certainly. But don’t get caught up in having to make a big deal of every year. Marking the day with family and friends and celebrating your child is the point.
to have parties out of a local recreation centre, gymnasium, pool or theme park. One of the beneďŹ ts of having a party in one of these establishments is that playtime in the gym or the pool is organized for the children and you don’t have to deal with the cleanup afterwards. While children aged nine-and-up may roll their eyes at receiving an invitation to a birthday party, it may be important for you to know who is coming and who is not. After all, you are footing the bill for the food and entertainment. Don’t be afraid to ask for an RSVP, especially if you’re hiring a professional such as a magician who could charge you up to $30 more for that extra child you weren’t expecting or for the dance studio that is letting your little princess and
ďŹ ve of her friends twirl to classical music. If all you need is a verbal conďŹ rmation, say so. But make sure you get what you need to be able to keep the party budget and plans running smoothly. The tween-aged child is a challenge to please for his birthday. Keep in mind what your child’s favourite activities might be and try to accommodate them where you can. It may be hard to go white water rafting in winter, or to do some skiing in summer. Children this age like activities with their best friends, and may want less parental involvement. Be there in the background, but let the children play games, hang out and just have fun. By the time your child reaches their teens, this is a good time to let your teenager take charge of planning their own birthday event. Girls often enjoy hosting a sleep-over or a spa day while guys might want an entire day of paintball and video gaming, followed with pizza and a movie marathon. Preside over the event to keep things sane and safe, but otherwise leave the kids alone. No matter what age your child is, remember to keep the events friendly to your wallet and lifestyle. Don’t feel the need to be extravagant or to allow your child something to do that you would not normally allow. Remember, birthdays are a celebration of life and are meant to be something you share with family and friends. Keep it pertinent to your child and their friends, keep the preparations simple and do your best to relax. It’s your child’s special day.

Your Child’s Learning Style: What it is and why it is important By Karen Johnson o you know your child’s preferred learning style? Does your daughter tend to memorize information after simply reading it? Does your son enjoy building detailed lego kits? These behaviors are often indicators of learning preferences. It is important to identify a child’s learning style in order to ensure the best chance for academic success. The seven main learning styles are as follows: visual, auditory, tactile, kinesthetic, logical, social, and solitary. Visual and auditory learners have an advantage, as traditional classroom instruction is catered more towards them. Visual learners do well by reading, viewing lists, charts, images, reading their teachers’ facial expressions, diagrams, etc. Auditory learners beneďŹ t from verbal instruction, talking through problems, and using rhythm and music as memory aids. Tactile and kinesthetic learners may have had a more difďŹ cult time in classrooms years ago, but teachers today are fortunately much more willing to allow children to move about the room to engage in the lesson. Kinesthetic learners need to move their bodies as they learn, and tactile learners like to use their hands to comprehend the material. Both of these preferences are conducive to building 2D or 3D models with clay, play dough, or building materials such as legos. Kinesthetic learners might like to learn about the human body, for example, by jumping, running, stretching, and discussing which parts of the body are allowing them to do such things. Both tactile and kinesthetic learners might enjoy doing their writing assignments on large marker boards or butcher paper, so they are not conďŹ ned to a desk and can immerse themselves more into the project. Also, a kinesthetic learner is more likely to memorize facts while playing catch, jumping rope, or clapping. Children in both of these categories would learn better through a hands-on science experiment rather than simply reading about a concept via text. Another type of learning preference is logi-

cal. The logical learner enjoys mathematics, proving equations, and using reasoning and systems. This student will do well to write out lists of goals or steps to ďŹ gure something out. He is likely to use the scientiďŹ c method approach to solve a problem, and he may become frustrated if he doesn’t know why something is the way it is. Quite often, logical learners excel with technology, providing them with an advantage in more modern classrooms. The last two categories of learning preferences are social and solitary. Social students thrive by working in groups, while those who prefer solitary learning may not. These students will do better with self-paced learning and individualized study plans. It is important to ďŹ nd a niche of interest for a solitary learner and base lessons around that. For example, if you have a child obsessed with airplanes you can use this to teach about gravity, weather, physics, and movement. Fortunately for students who prefer to learn independently, there is a new community of online learning where these solitary learners can feel comfortable and succeed. So now that you know the basic learning styles, chances are you see your child in one or more category. A good age to begin identifying your child’s learning style is around 6 to 7—by this point, his/her preferences are likely established. Once you and your child’s teacher know your child’s learning preference(s), it is recommended that he/ she be taught using a variety of methods, and not just appeal to the identiďŹ ed style. While it is important to teach the most difďŹ cult lessons using their preference, it is also necessary to reinforce lessons using multiple other styles. To truly ensure the best chance of success, teachers need to provide learning tools to enhance and improve abilities in areas where students are weaker. An auditory learner should be taught using a kinesthetic lesson plan, but the teacher should aid that student in working through such a lesson, as it is not in line with his natural abilities.
Quiz: What type of learner is your child?
1. Your child was assigned a report on a wild animal. She asked to visit the zoo to see and touch stingrays in their natural habitat. Your child is most likely: A. a tactile learner; B. a social learner; C. a kinesthetic learner; D. an auditory learner 2. Your daughter was told to create a project showing the water cycle. Which of the following would indicate that she is a logical learner? A. She immediately jumped on the computer to research water cycles after school; B. She created a step-by-step detailed diagram of the water cycle, complete with a color-coded key; C. She created a rain measurement tool and is leaving cups of water around the house to observe water evaporate; D. All of the above. 3. Your son’s foreign language teacher tells you that he most enjoys listening to translation activities via headphones and computer during class. Your son would be best described as a: A. social, visual learner; B. tactile, kinesthetic learner; C. auditory, solitary learner; D. logical, social learner 4. Which of the following is a helpful lesson for teaching math to a kinesthetic learner? A. having him measure how far he kicked the soccer ball to determine the length of the ďŹ eld; B. having him draw a soccer ďŹ eld and describe its measurements; C. Watching the teacher draw the measurements on the whiteboard; D. Working in groups to draw a soccer ďŹ eld to scale on paper 5. Your child can be identiďŹ ed as a visual, social learner. She was assigned a group project on an historical war. What might be a good role for her within the group? A. creating a 3-D battleďŹ eld; B. re-enacting a battle scene for the class; C. writing out a detailed synopsis of why the war occurred; D. researching little-known facts about the war and reporting her ďŹ ndings back to the group. Answers: 1.A; 2.D; 3.C; 4.A; 5.D Sources: blog.udemy.com, kumon.co.uk.

The New Canada’s Food Guide What You Need to Know By Kristen Yarker
n January the Canadian government released the new Canada’s Food Guide. As a child nutrition expert, here is my opinion on what you need to know as a parent. And, one common misunderstanding that I want you to avoid.
I
Who Is the Food Guide For?
First, you need to know who the Food Guide is intended for, and who it isn’t. While nutrition isn’t one-size-ďŹ ts-all, the Food Guide is intended to maintain health for the majority of people, from the age of 2 years and older. Before you turn your attention to the Food Guide, here are a few examples of those for whom the Food Guide does not/may not apply: UĂŠ v ĂžÂœĂ•Ă€ Â?ÂˆĂŒĂŒÂ?i œ˜i ÂˆĂƒ Ă•Â˜`iĂ€ Ă“ Ăži>Ă€Ăƒ ÂœÂ?`° UĂŠ v ĂžÂœĂ• >Ă€i VÂ…ÂœÂœĂƒÂˆÂ˜} ĂŒÂœ Ă€>ÂˆĂƒi ĂžÂœĂ•Ă€ V…ˆÂ?` vegan. UĂŠ v ĂžÂœĂ•Ă€ V…ˆÂ?` Â…>Ăƒ “i`ˆV>Â? `ˆ>}Â˜ÂœĂƒiĂƒ ÂœĂ€ Lihavioural concerns. In each of these examples, I recommend working with a nutrition expert, such as a registered dietitian, to create a custom nutrition plan that meets your child’s needs. What’s New?
There are a number of differences with this new Food Guide. s 6EGETABLES AND &RUIT It’s recommended that half of what you offer your child is vegetables and fruit. I’m very supportive of this larger emphasis on produce. s 0LANT "ASED 0ROTEIN While plant-based proteins were included in the old Food Guide, they played second ďŹ ddle to meat. I’m happy to see the even footing for all the protein foods. And, the recommendation to include plant-based protein in your eating habits.
s Dairy Foods: In n the th old Food Guide, Guid d da dairy airy iy ir
had its own food group (called milk od gr ilk aand alternatives). In the new Food Group, yogurt and cheesee have been moved into the nm protein group. I have been teaching this to clients for many years, so I am happy to see it represented in the new Food Guide. s 'RAINS There is less emphasis on grains in the new Food Guide. Yes, they are still present. But they’ve been decreased to make room for more vegetables and protein—a move that I support. More Than Just What to Eat
This is the ďŹ rst Canada’s Food Guide that I’ve seen in my 25 years of nutrition experience that not only gives recommendations on what food to eat but also provides recommendations on how to eat. I am elated to see this. Cooking at home, mindful eating, enjoying your food, and unplugging from our devices so we can share meals are all just as important for healthy eating as the foods that we put in our bodies. Watch Out for This Common Misunder STANDING
While I love the new plate diagram of the new Food Guide, it can lead to a misunderstanding that I want to clear up for you here. It is not essential that your child eats every single meal perfectly balanced like the image. The image is meant to describe the overall balance of your child’s eating. It is not a prescription of the exact balance that needs to get in to your child at each meal. A best practice in feeding kids is to follow Satter’s Division of Responsibility in Feeding Children. In this method, adults choose what foods are served. Kids choose what to eat from what you’ve provided. Which very likely means
that your child won’t achieve the balance depicted on the plate at a particular meal. I recommend that you step back from the perspective of an individual meal and look at your child’s eating throughout the day. Is about ½ of what they ate today vegetables or fruit? Is Ÿ protein foods? Is Ÿ starch foods? If the answers are yes, then your child has achieved the balance of the Food Guide. If the answer is no, don’t be tempted to require your child to eat two bites of broccoli before they can have more rice. This will only create resistance. And, it doesn’t teach kids to like broccoli. Instead, rotate the food groups that you provide throughout the day so that your child achieves a healthy balance throughout the day. For example, if your child hasn’t eaten enough veggies and fruit so far today, serve a favourite fruit for dessert. This is more effective than forcing those two bites of broccoli. More to Come
Are you looking for more direction regarding the number of servings of foods that you should be providing to your kids? Or, are you looking for advice on how big those servings should be? Stay tuned. The new Food Guide is designed to be a collection of materials. The ďŹ rst pieces of that collection were released in January. Health Canada indicates that more materials will be released later this year. To be clear, I have not seen a sneak peek. But, I suspect that the second release materials will have more recommendations regarding speciďŹ c servings.
