Kids and Concussion The facts every parent should know By Stephanie Cowle, Parachute

t’s easy to spot a bruise on your child’s elbow or a scrape on the knee, but what about an injury inside their head? Brain injuries, such as concussion, are often referred to as “invisibleâ€? injuries because they don’t show on the outside. Even though you might not see the injury, your child will still feel the effects and need the proper care to get better. Most likely, you are hearing more about concussions these days than ever before. That can mean a lot of information to sift through. Based on the latest research evidence, here are the essential facts every parent should know about concussion. UĂŠ ĂŠVœ˜VĂ•ĂƒĂƒÂˆÂœÂ˜ĂŠÂˆĂƒĂŠ>ĂŠLĂ€>ÂˆÂ˜ĂŠÂˆÂ˜Â?ÕÀÞ° UĂŠ ĂŒĂŠ >vviVĂŒĂƒĂŠ ĂŒÂ…iĂŠ Ăœ>ÞÊ >ĂŠ V…ˆÂ?`ĂŠ “>ÞÊ ĂŒÂ…ÂˆÂ˜ÂŽĂŠ >˜`ĂŠ remember things and can cause a variety of physical, cognitive, behavioural, and sleep-related symptoms. Concussions are unique because, unlike other brain injuries, they can’t be seen on routine X-rays, CT scans, or MRIs. Examples include your child being hit in the head with a ball, colliding with another person, or falling and knocking their head on the floor.
The most common symptom of a concussion is a headache.
Most concussions are not sports-related
If your child is 10 to 14 years old, then they are more likely to get a concussion while participating in a sport or recreational activity. However, for all other age groups, including younger kids, most concussions are caused by falls. Motor vehicle crashes are another cause of concussion.
Girls are at risk, too
By the numbers, yes, a greater number of concussions occur in boys than in girls. However, research comparing males and females participating in the same sport with the same rules and environment (e.g., soccer) shows females are at higher risk for concussion than their male counterparts. What is more, girls tend to take longer to recover. Your child can have a concussion even if they don’t lose consciousness
In fact, only about 10 percent of people with concussion are knocked out. The most common symptom of a concussion is a headache. Other common signs and symptoms include dizziness, nausea, blurred or double vision, confusion, and difďŹ culty remembering. If your child is very young or has difďŹ culty communicating, watch for changes in their behaviour and eating, sleeping or playing habits. It’s important to learn these signs and symptoms so you know what to watch out for. To have this information on hand wherever you go, download the free
Concussion Ed app (available for iOs and ˜`Ă€ÂœÂˆ`Ž° If your child does lose consciousness, this may be a sign of a more serious injury. Other “red agâ€? symptoms include neck pain, repeated vomiting, growing confusion, seizures, and weakness or tingling in their arms or legs. If any of these are present, get medical help immediately. Kids with concussion need rest, but not too much rest
The old way of dealing with concussion, when we knew less than we know today, was to send the person into a dark room for days and weeks. Not only is this approach ineffective, we now know it can actually be harmful to recovery. Instead, your child should get physical and mental rest for 24 to 48 hours, then gradually start adding low Â?iĂ›iÂ?ĂƒĂŠÂœvĂŠ>VĂŒÂˆĂ›ÂˆĂŒĂžĂŠL>VÂŽĂŠÂˆÂ˜Â°ĂŠ ĂƒĂŠĂžÂœĂ•Ă€ĂŠV…ˆÂ?`ĂŠÂˆĂƒĂŠĂ€icovering from concussion, they should not do any activities that make their symptoms worse. Know the signs and symptoms to watch for, and what to do if you suspect a concussion in your child. Remember these three steps: 1. Recognize symptoms and remove your child from activity immediately, even if they insist they are OK. 2. Get checked out by a medical doctor or nurse practitioner. 3. Gradually return to school and physical activity, according to your child’s symptoms. 0ARACHUTE is Canada’s national charity dedicated to reducing the devastating impact of preventable injuries. Physical Literacy: An Exercise in Learning By Nic Enright-Morin
O
ver the past few years, the concept of physical literacy has grown in popularity around the world. If you’ve never heard of it, don’t feel bad—but before you ask, it’s nothing to do with running and reading books at the same time! VVÂœĂ€`ˆ˜}ĂŠ ĂŒÂœĂŠ ĂŒÂ…iĂŠ Â˜ĂŒiĂ€Â˜>ĂŒÂˆÂœÂ˜>Â?ĂŠ *Â…ĂžĂƒÂˆV>Â?ĂŠ ÂˆĂŒiĂ€>VÞÊ ĂƒĂƒÂœVˆ>ĂŒÂˆÂœÂ˜]ĂŠ Âş*Â…ĂžĂƒÂˆV>Â?ĂŠ Â?ÂˆĂŒiĂ€>VÞÊ ÂˆĂƒĂŠ the motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge, and understanding to value and take responsibility for engagement in physical activities for life.â€? To put it into plain English, the concept simply means viewing all aspects of our health holistically, rather than as separate ideas. The philosophy is gaining ground in Canada. This year, the BC Ministry of Health provided funding of $50,000 for 17 community ventures across BC to learn and be mentored about physical literacy and how it positively impacts our health and well-being. But the reality is, even though experts now know that incorporating movement, nutrition and mindfulness together means children thrive, it isn’t always easy—or possible— for most mainstream and public schools to implement such ideas. However, a progressive and modern ĂƒV…œœÂ?ĂŠÂ?ˆŽiĂŠ*i>ÀÊ/Ă€iiĂŠ Â?i“iÂ˜ĂŒ>ÀÞ]ĂŠ>ĂŠÂŤĂ€ÂˆĂ›>ĂŒiĂŠ school in Kitsilano, has physical literacy at the heart of its learning approach. *i>ÀÊ/Ă€iiĂŠĂœ>ĂƒĂŠvÂœĂ•Â˜`i`ĂŠÂˆÂ˜ĂŠĂ“Ă¤ÂŁÂŁĂŠ>˜`ĂŠÂœÂŤi˜i`ĂŠ its doors as an elementary school in 2016. *>Ă•Â?ĂŠ,œ“>˜ˆ]ĂŠVœ‡vÂœĂ•Â˜`iÀÊ>˜`ĂŠ`ÂˆĂ€iVĂŒÂœĂ€ĂŠÂœvĂŠ the school says that the response and feedback to the school’s innovative learning approach have been extremely positive. education every day, for one hour, five days a week, which is two and a half times more than most other schools do. We really do believe that kids have to have physical exercise every day in order for them to de-stress their body, to get enough sleep at night, to be able to concentrate when they’re in class, and to develop a healthy self-esteem—so that they feel comfortable in their own skin, and don’t feel self-conscious about their weight or their physical shape.â€? We didn’t used to have the stimulants that we have now. Even TV, for example, years ago, the shows were a little bit slower; while now, the shows are so fast paced that it can cause addictive personalities. Children are becoming addicted to stimulants, instead of being able to just sit in awareness,â€? said Bailey. Miller and Bailey said that physical exercise and mindfulness are the key to overall well-being—not just for kids, but for all of us. Âş*Â…ĂžĂƒÂˆV>Â?ĂŠ >VĂŒÂˆĂ›ÂˆĂŒĂžĂŠ ÂˆĂƒĂŠ }œœ`ĂŠ vÂœĂ€ĂŠ ĂƒÂœĂŠ “>Â˜ĂžĂŠ things: it gets the internal organs working, it helps us to use them properly, it keeps them
healthy; but, if you’re just being stagnant, it’s not just bad for your body, it’s bad for your brain. When we’re young and we’re kids, we love movement. We don’t even think about it as physical activity; we think about it as fun, because that’s what it’s supposed to be. It stops stress hormones from being produced, and it releases endorphins, the happy hormones. Those are the ones we need to focus on bringing out in children. If we don’t have those hormones being released, that’s how we get depression, anxiety, and other mental health disorders, said Miller. Overall, physical literacy is a great umbrella term for combining all the attributes that we need to help us raise healthy and happy children. Instead of just focusing on what our kids need, perhaps it’s time to start leading by example: eat well, move, and be mindful. How hard can that be?

Help your child to return to school with a positive mindset and equip them with study skills that will set them up for success. By Helen Chambers, Aspire Learning Academy

eveloping good study habits is not just about providing the space, time and support that your child needs to complete their school homework; it is also about preparing their mindset so that it is easy and enjoyable for your child to integrate themselves into the school routine. Who doesn’t remember those back to school rituals: new gym shoes; new stationery; the delicious smell of a fresh, clean planner? (Okay, well maybe that last one is just me). Whether those few frantic weeks of preparation after the long summer vacation ďŹ lled you as a child with dread or excitement, make the anticipation of returning to school (or starting a new one) a positive experience for your own child. Here are several strategies to help start your child off on the right foot. 8 BCPARENT CA s BACK TO SCHOOL

Getting ready to start or return to school
The new school year brings great new opportunities, social and academic. It is a fresh start, full of possibilities, but it may also cause some anxiety.
Getting organized & establishing a realistic routine
Children need to organize their time and their equipment for successful study. The ability to be organized throughout the school year is an essential skill; it is the foundation on which successful students build. UĂŠ Ă€i>ĂŒÂˆÂ˜}ĂŠĂ€ÂœĂ•ĂŒÂˆÂ˜iĂƒĂŠ>Ă€ÂœĂ•Â˜`ĂŠĂƒĂŒĂ•`ĂžĂŠÂˆĂƒĂŠÂ…iÂ?ÂŤvĂ•Â?ÆÊ ideally, your child will study at the same time each day for a set period. Where this isn’t possible, think about how time to study fits in with your child’s other extracurricular activities and find a spot where it sits comfortably, so that your child won’t be too exhausted to concentrate nor too rushed between sports or music lessons. UĂŠ ÂœÂ˜ĂƒÂˆ`iĂ€ĂŠĂŒÂ…iĂŠ>}iĂŠÂœvĂŠĂžÂœĂ•Ă€ĂŠV…ˆÂ?`ĂŠĂŒÂœĂŠiÂ˜ĂƒĂ•Ă€iĂŠ that the period of time you set aside for homework is realistic. The time should be long enough for the child to engage meaningfully with their work and to complete assigned tasks, but not so long that the child cannot sustain their focus and homework time becomes a punishment! Consult with your child’s teachers if necessary; if your child struggles to sustain
focus for enough time to complete a task, allow a ‘brain break’ where the child completes a different task or does a physical activity for ten minutes or so before getting back on task.

How to Choose a Children’s Art Class this Fall By Ariane Fleischmann, Arts Umbrella
O
ver the summer, your preschooler drew on the sidewalk with chalk, got her fingers messy with paints, created puppet shows for his family, and sang along to their favourite movie. Creativity doesn’t have to end with long, sunny days. Whether you have a child heading to preschool, daycare, or kindergarten in September, or they’re joining their friends in elementary school, fall is a bustling season. September is when many extracurricular activities kick off as well. So keep the artistic passion that fueled her all summer long going—with an art class. The arts provide children with valuable skills like focus, critical thinking, and cooperation. By immersing themselves in the artistic process, children also ex their creativity in ways that will beneďŹ t them in the long term. The arts are proven to improve kids’ social, mental, and emotional development, and foster problem-solving
abilities and entrepreneurial instincts. There are many art forms and classes available for your child to participate in, so where do you start? How do you choose if your kid should try drama, sculpture, dance, or something else entirely?
subsidy programs to ensure children have equitable access to the arts. Information can typically be found online, and answers to your questions are often a phone call away. You may be surprised at what options are available to you.
Do Your Research
Think Outside the Box
Start by gathering your intel. There’s no shortage of classes if you know where to look. Look up the schools, community cenĂŒĂ€iĂƒ]ĂŠ>˜`ĂŠ>Ă€ĂŒĂƒĂŠv>VˆÂ?ÂˆĂŒÂˆiĂƒĂŠÂˆÂ˜ĂŠĂžÂœĂ•Ă€ĂŠVÂˆĂŒĂžÂ°ĂŠ ĂƒÂŽĂŠĂžÂœĂ•Ă€ĂŠ friends and family where they send their kids. Join a local Facebook group or follow an engaging Instagram account that’s all about children’s art. Just remember to make this process fun. You may discover classes and art forms you didn’t know were available. For many families, budgets are an important consideration when choosing a class. Many places offer bursary, scholarship, or

From manga, comics, or zine creation, to paddle carving, to contemporary dance, to different kinds of animation or filmmaking—there are so many ways kids can express themselves. No matter what art form you choose, ensure your child is able to express themselves. class will balance technical teaching with the freedom to choose. When he knows what the box is, he will know how to jump outside of it. Start with the Outcome
Instead of starting with the class, start with your desired outcome. What are you hoping your child gets out of her art? When children experiment with new media, they learn to think abstractly and begin to understand the science of material interaction. By counting colours in a painting, frames in a ďŹ lm, or notes in a song, children learn basic math. Feeling free to create and explore gives children selfconďŹ dence. By working in a group of peers,
students develop communications skills. Working on a project, children discover how concentration and dedication can produce an incredible ďŹ nished product. Whatever the outcome you’re looking for, there’s an art form that can help bring out these qualities in your child. Does the Class Expand from School or Home?
Do you make art a regular part of your day at home? What classes has your child been taking at school? When choosing an extracurricular activity, expand upon what your kids are already doing at summer camp, school, or home. Familiarity with an art form can make a new class way less scary for a child. If he dances around your living room every morning, jumping into a hip-hop class might be an easy transition. Does she play games on ĂžÂœĂ•Ă€ĂŠÂˆ*>`œÊ ĂŠVÂ?>ĂƒĂƒĂŠÂˆÂ˜ĂŠĂ›Âˆ`iÂœĂŠ}>“iĂŠ>Ă€ĂŒĂŠÂœĂ€ĂŠV>Ă€toons may hold her attention. If this fall will be your child’s ďŹ rst art class, ďŹ nd out if it offers opportunities for parents or guardians to stay in the classroom. Having you there can make the class more com-
fortable. It’s also an opportunity for you to share your love of the arts with your child. Ask Your Kid
Kids know what they want. So ask her what kind of class she wants to take. Take the time to listen to your child’s interests. You may never know if your kid has a desire to `Ă€>ĂœĂŠ V>Ă€ĂŒÂœÂœÂ˜ĂƒĂŠ Ă•Â˜Â?iĂƒĂƒĂŠ ĂžÂœĂ•ĂŠ >ĂƒÂŽÂ°ĂŠ *Â?Ă•Ăƒ]ĂŠ ĂŒÂ…iÞ½Â?Â?ĂŠ like being part of the decision-making process. ** In BC, our diverse economy is tied ever more closely to the creative industries. Even in ďŹ elds like science and technology, creativity is an asset that hiring managers are looking for in their employees. We’ll always need to come up with creative solutions to humanity’s challenges. Give your child the head start they deserve—with a fun, engaging, and magical experience with art. !RIANE &LEISCHMANN is the content and communications specialist at Arts Umbrella, a non-profit arts education centre for youth ages 2–22 based in Metro Vancouver with programming in the visual and performing arts. How Craniosacral Therapy changed my life With the birth of my son, who has Down Syndrome, I did extensive research on how I could help him with the challenges he would have, and Craniosacral Therapy came up a lot. In Iran, where I’m from, no one knew about this therapy. When I came to Canada, I searched it out and started him with treatments. It helped him a lot. I quickly realized that this was what he needed. I chose to study at Langara College in 2014 and became a Craniosacral Therapist, to better prepare myself to be able to help my son through the different stages of his life. It has been life-changing for us. vĂŒiĂ€ĂŠĂŒÂ…iĂŠVĂ€>Â˜ÂˆÂœĂƒ>VĂ€>Â?ĂŠĂŒĂ€i>ĂŒÂ“iÂ˜ĂŒĂƒ]ĂŠ ĂŠ saw vast improvements in many of his behavioural issues. He stopped banging his head against the wall and has never done it again since he got treatment. His physical challenges also eased, he stopped grinding his teeth and his constipation lessened and in general, I noticed increased calmness, concentration, and better sleep. ĂƒĂŠ >ĂŠ Â?>VĂŒ>ĂŒÂˆÂœÂ˜ĂŠ VÂœÂ˜ĂƒĂ•Â?ĂŒ>Â˜ĂŒ]ĂŠ ĂŠ ÂˆÂ˜ĂŒĂ€Âœduced my new craniosacral skills to my existing practice and discovered ways to help many challenges in newborns such as breastfeeding issues, torticollis (stiff neck or tilted head), plagiocephaly (at head), colic (fussiness), and sleep. Discovering the effectiveness of craniosacral therapy is one of the many blessings my son has brought to my life, because not only am I treating him but now I am helping other people as well. —Shaz BCPARENT CA s BACK TO SCHOOL 21

How to Succeed at Failing By Kelly Cleeve ear of failure not only plagues adults but is weighing down our children and preventing them from reaching their full potential. It is a detrimental mindset, formed in early childhood (around 5–9 years of age) and affects both genders equally, regardless of actual or perceived ability. Being afraid to make a mistake has a profound effect on our children, often causing depression, anxiety, self-shaming, and emL>ÀÀ>ĂƒĂƒÂ“iÂ˜ĂŒÂ°ĂŠ ˜`ĂŠ Ăœi]ĂŠ ĂŒÂ…iÂˆĂ€ĂŠ Â?ÂœĂ›ÂˆÂ˜}ĂŠ ÂŤ>Ă€iÂ˜ĂŒĂƒ]ĂŠ are partially responsible for this affliction. I know that your parent-guilt is kicking in because I have it too. My oldest son is terriďŹ ed to make mistakes. He is incredibly hard on himself, self-punishing, and it affects his self-esteem at times. He says that he is afraid to disappoint me. Ouch! I have been searching for answers, wondering how I could have caused such anxiety in my own child. Fear of failure affects many of our children and is causing stress at home and at school.

Why is this happening?
Most of us have our children’s best interest in mind and we would never cause intentional harm. Out of our desire to protect our kids, we try to prevent them from failing. We remind them to complete their homework. We help them study for a test.
My oldest son is terrified to make mistakes. He says that he is afraid to disappoint me. Ouch!
We talk to their coaches and their teachers. We intervene in their social squabbles and we bring their lunches to school when they are forgotten at home. In the era of social media and projections of the perfect family, many of us see our children’s failures as a reflection of our parenting. We are wor-
ried about judgment and we have created an atmosphere in which mistakes are painted with negativity. Have you ever thought about how you react when your child makes >ĂŠÂ“ÂˆĂƒĂŒ>ÂŽiœÊ*iÀ…>ÂŤĂƒĂŠÂ…iĂŠv>ˆÂ?ĂƒĂŠ>ĂŠĂŒiĂƒĂŒĂŠ>ĂŒĂŠĂƒV…œœÂ?°Ê Maybe she doesn’t make the team. If your child loses his homework, how do you respond? Research shows that fear of failure is directly linked to both the quality of parentchild communication and to parental high expectations. (Cue overwhelming guilt once again.) I have exceptionally high expectations for myself and admit that it trickles down to my oldest. Sometimes, I forget that he is just a kid. Is it possible that parents and teachers expect too much from our chil`Ă€iÂ˜ÂśĂŠ Ă€iĂŠĂœiĂŠÂŤĂ•ĂŒĂŒÂˆÂ˜}ĂŠĂŒÂœÂœĂŠÂ“Ă•VÂ…ĂŠÂŤĂ€iĂƒĂƒĂ•Ă€iĂŠÂœÂ˜ĂŠ them? We need to ask ourselves what is developmentally appropriate. When a child makes a mistake, how a parent responds can be crucial to the de-
velopment of that child’s self-esteem. If a parent reacts with harsh criticism, punishment or uses withdrawal of love, that child may develop a fear of failure. Have you ever chastised your child’s mistakes, out of frustration? Maybe you believe tough love will inspire your child to work harder. Some of us respond with disappointment and give ĂŒÂ…iĂŠVÂœÂ?`ĂŠĂƒÂ…ÂœĂ•Â?`iÀ°Ê*Ă•Â˜ÂˆĂŒÂˆĂ›iĂŠ>VĂŒÂˆÂœÂ˜ĂŠ`>“>}iĂƒĂŠ the child’s self-worth and creates a threat to the parent-child bond. Imagine the pressure of thinking your parent only loves you when you are successful. What a burden to carry. Fear of failure has social and academic implications, as well. Depression and anxiety can affect friendships and a child’s desire to participate fully in life. When you are afraid to make a mistake, you may be less willing to take social risks, make new friends, or try new things. Fear of failure affects engagement in school, as children may be hesitant to think outside of the box, to think critically or creatively. Behaviour problems often arise, causing friction both at school >˜`ĂŠÂˆÂ˜ĂŠĂƒÂœVˆ>Â?ĂŠĂƒÂˆĂŒĂ•>ĂŒÂˆÂœÂ˜ĂƒÂ°ĂŠ ĂŠV…ˆÂ?`ĂŠĂœÂ…ÂœĂŠÂ…>ĂƒĂŠ>ĂŠ low sense of self-worth may take his frustration out on others or may be inattentive at
school. I have seen these results in my son. His performance at school is a roller coaster of effort and lack thereof and has direct implications on his self-esteem. Have I done this to my child?
Let your child hear the positive self-afďŹ rmations you may whisper. Explain to them the restorative actions that you will take to correct a mistake.
