The transformative power of childhood volunteering

The empathy they gain helps them recognize varying perspectives, communicate their ideas and realize they live in an interconnected world of people from many cultures, backgrounds, and circumstances. Ultimately, their experiences and connections to causes will last a lifetime, creating more understanding, tolerant and compassionate adults. Where to start?

Talk to your kids. What do they care about? What are their interests? They can consider their community—issues or causes directly affecting their friends or family members—or larger issues impacting the world. All forms of volunteerism generate the same benefits, and once they get started they will want to keep going!

By Emily-anne King

Ten kid-friendly volunteer ideas:

1. Fundraise. Hold fundraisers like bake sales, car or dog washes, lemonade stands or a used book sale and give the money to a worthy cause. 2. Become part of a team working to raise funds for a specific cause. Is it animals? The environment? The health and welfare of others? They choose! 3. Volunteer at a local animal shelter. Spend time at a local shelter petting and caring for lonely cats and dogs. 4. Donate food, clothes or other necessary items to those in need. Create seasonal care packages, collect non-perishable food items for the hungry or serve meals at a homeless shelter. 5. Walk to fight disease. Many charities and causes use walks to increase awareness and raise funds. Kids can ask friends and family to donate to their walk. 6. Visit a retirement or assisted living home. Nothing brings more joy to the elderly than a visit with a child. Bring a game or puzzle to play. 7. Adopt a family for the holidays. Connect with a local business, charity or faith group, and then shop for that family. 8. Help a neighbour. Volunteer to rake leaves, do yard work or walk the dog of an elderly, less-mobile neighbour. 9. Be part of community beautification. Help clean up garbage or plant trees and flowers. 10. Reach out to kids in the hospital. Make and deliver gifts and cards, distribute candy, or better yet, bring games and stay and play.

E

ver since I can remember, my family has put a significant focus on charity and giving. My brothers and I were taught at a very young age to look at the world around us and help those in need. I come from a family of philanthropists, big and small. This upbringing has set me on the path I lead today. Now more than ever, I feel that it is important to instill empathy in children and to teach them about the importance of looking outside themselves. This learning starts at home, but it certainly doesn’t end there. 8 bcparent.ca • holiday issue 2016

As children reach school age and head out into the world to discover their place in it, it is vital that parents, along with teachers and other adult role models, give them opportunities to help those in need. Creating space for children to discover their passions, to explore their world, and to stake claim to what personally matters to them, is another important part of the process. Through volunteerism and connections to causes, children learn early on that giving back is not only the right thing to do but that it brings personal happiness and gratitude—foundations for good mental health.

Five reasons your child should volunteer:

1. Instills empathy and compassion within them. 2. Creates a sense of self-worth, boosts self-esteem (confidence) and is very empowering. 3. Provides moments of feel-good experiences as they learn how they can positively affect the lives of others which is motivation to continue to volunteer. 4. Builds a sense of community within children and helps establish their “place in the world”. 5. It’s contagious!

Ask your child to be on the lookout for ways they can help and let them know they have your support. When kids are allowed and encouraged to help, they learn the power they have to affect change, and doing good benefits us all. Emily-anne King is the Co-Founder and Vice President of Backpack Buddies, a charity that has built its foundation on the premise of kids helping kids. This Metro Vancouver charity aims to fill the weekend hunger gap by providing at-risk school children with backpacks of food every second Friday. Many children who rely on weekday school meal programs have little to eat on weekends. Donor “buddy” schools are empowered to hold fundraisers and pack bags full of food for other hungry children at recipient inner city schools within Metro Vancouver. Emily-anne started Backpack Buddies in 2012 with her mother Joanne Griffiths, a founding member of Canuck Place and Canuck Foundation, when they both saw a gap in the hunger cycle and felt they had to do something. They started small with one school and 20 backpacks, and today they deliver 1010 backpacks of food to nine recipient schools. This lifelong philanthropic team knows there are more schools across Metro Vancouver that need their help, so they are just getting started. Backpack Buddies is always looking for more schools and child volunteers as well as donations of food, funds or the time of community members. www. backpackbuddies.ca

The Positive Influence of Performing Arts

I

’m often asked this question, and the answer is always 100% yes! Some children already possess a lot of ability, be it learned or natural. However, for every child to whom stepping onto the stage is second nature, there are those who are afraid to raise their hand, try a new skill or to express an idea for fear of being wrong. With today’s culture of success being measured by achievement, we can too easily forget that achievement doesn’t equal happiness, and there are many other reasons to take part in activities. Putting a shy anxious child in a performing arts class may seem contradictory, but it may be the best thing you can do for them. I know this not only from seeing children grow and blossom in performing arts classes, but also from my experience with my own daughter. As a mother who is the Artistic Director of performing arts schools, I should have 20 bcparent.ca • holiday issue 2016

had the child who wanted to be front and centre for everything! However, for the first four years of her life, my child cried and clung to me at daycare drop-offs. She

refused to participate in extracurricular classes (yes, including the ones that I run myself ) and leaving her with a babysitter during waking hours was impossible as it was too stressful for all of us—babysitter included!

offers a low-pressure way to experiment and explore one’s own voice and ability. Much like team sports, group singing involves trusting and supporting one’s teammates and as a result, increasing personal confidence.

SHINE! For my daughter and many others, taking part in performing arts is teaching them valuable life skills that they will use off the stage as well as on. They may not end up as a leading light on Broadway, but

DANCE! Dance can be a wonderful confidence builder. Children who may be hesitant to express their emotions can often find an outlet through movement. While technique and learning choreography is valuable, it is more important to enable a dancer to tell a story and convey their feelings to the audience.

Acting is exploring possibilities within ourselves and others by imagining a world that is not our own.

ACT! Theatre is built on imagination. Acting is not being given a piece of paper with lines on it to read. Acting is exploring possibilities within ourselves and others by imagining a world that is not our own. Being able to imagine various outcomes for ourselves gives us the confidence to reach for whatever future we aspire to.

having the courage to trust their teammates, express themselves, and fully use their imaginations will give them the ability to reach for their dreams, whatever they may be. About Lights Up Musical Theatre Schools

Lights Up Musical Theatre Schools are very proud to support the children’s charity The KidSafe Project through our large scale events. Each year, our students perform in

some of Vancouver’s most prestigious theatres, bringing together all of our students for a celebratory song and dance performance. These performances not only raise thousands of dollars in support of KidSafe, a charity that gives vulnerable Vancouver children the opportunity to take part in developmental activities and fun field trips when school is closed for break, but also gives the opportunity for our young students to build their confidence on major stages and use their new skills to help other kids to gain more life experiences. Lights Up Musical Theatre Schools run weekend classes alongside the school year as well as Spring Break and Summer Camps throughout the Lower Mainland. The Lights Up program offers a broad curriculum leading to several performances a year. Visit lightsuptheatre.ca for more info. KidSafe Project provides nurturing safe havens for vulnerable inner-city children when schools are traditionally closed. Visit kidsafe.ca.

However, we persevered with various classes and slowly began to see changes. Like so many others who I have met, my daughter began to participate regularly, speak out in class, and come to life on stage in front of an audience. She loves to dance and sing, takes great pride in her newfound skills and abilities, even leading her own dance classes at home and teaching us a thing or two! Although the children enjoy showing off their work in regular performances, it is the work that takes place through the term in the classroom that is the most valuable aspect of the performance programs. Through singing, dancing, and acting, the aim is to build confidence, encourage selfexpression, and instill a love of the arts. SING! The ability and desire to sing is innate and universal. Despite many people’s insecurities, everyone does, in fact, have the capacity to sing! Singing in a group setting bcparent.ca • holiday issue 2016 21

The importance of sewing & cooking skills for children By Bev Yaworski

T

o a busy parent rushing to put a weekday meal on the table or trying to find a few, free minutes to sew a button on their child’s shirt, the prospect of teaching their kids life skills such as sewing or cooking may seem an impossible task. Experts advise starting slowly with simple, easy, fun projects usually on a quiet weekend. By tapping into a child’s sense of fun and discovery with shared hands-on activities, the entire family may benefit from quality cooking or crafty time together, while enhancing a healthy, happy homelife. Exploring outside inspiration and support through classes or online resources can also ease the learning process. Cooking With Love

Cooking is a valuable life skill that develops 22 bcparent.ca • holiday issue 2016

children’s self-confidence. With educational opportunities like the Food Channel and kids’ cooking competitions such as Master Chef Junior, a new passion for kids cooking has emerged. Cooking introduces tasks such as reading recipes, which can assist

your child’s reading abilities. Measuring ingredients can facilitate math proficiency. Barb Koyanagi McMahon, cooking in struc tor and garden coordinator with Sprouting Chefs, emphasizes how kids learn

a sense of service to their family and others when preparing food. “We focus on service, generosity and how cooking is an expression of love, when we cook and nourish others. Our Sprouting Chef ’s motto is: love yourself, love the earth and love your food. We teach how it’s all connected!” McMahon’s classes also highlight expanding kids’ palettes. She offers practical tips for parent’s introducing their children to cooking. • Put aside enough time to prepare so that you aren’t in a mad rush. For example: don’t involve your kids in cooking on a busy weekday night when you have tons of things to do. • Try a Sunday when you’ve got more time to do a slow-prepared family meal together. • Have patience and start slowly. Whatever

your comfort level, is a great place to start. • Create a sense of adventure while showing faith that it’s all going to work out. • Try not to bring a sense of fear into the kitchen even if you are nervous about safety aspects on items such as knives. • For young kids, give them ingredients like herbs or salad greens that they can tear up with their fingers. • Look at cookbooks together. Try basic recipes and break them into smaller stages. • Bring your kids grocery shopping with you and have them pick out some ingredients. • Have your children set the table. • Focus on what your kids are doing really well. • Make cooking a family thing. Get inspiration together from resources such as YouTube, Netflix, and Master Chef Junior. McMahon suggests beginner recipes to start off. For youngsters, start them by helping identify different flavour profiles, eg: sweet, sour, bitter, spicy. Let them taste these flavours. Let them then make a vinaigrette in a jar where they can add various combinations of vinegars, sours, honey, different oils. Have them shake that up. Invite them to taste it, and have them suggest any changes. This is a good way to encourage kids to eat salads. For older children, a tomato pasta dish with five or six ingredients is a good beginning project. Get them peeling and crushing garlic, cutting cherry tomatoes, putting fresh basil in a frying pan with olive oil, and adding pasta. Have them grate their own cheese. In this recipe, the smells, sounds, and sizzle will be engaging for your kids. “It’s amazing what can happen when you give kids a voice in the decision-making choices around your house. Get ready to be inspired by them! And be proud of them when they create something for you as their skills develop,” emphasizes McMahon. Sewing Skills

Learning to sew teaches basic motor skills, coordination, self-confidence—along with a sense of starting and finishing something. Liza Deyrmenjian, fashion business consultant, and mentor with The-Cutting Room—a Vancouver fashion and sewing teaching centre offering classes for children and adults—has first-hand experience with kids’ sewing classes. She acknowledges the importance of children learning skills such

“What is beautiful to see is that kids don’t know that they don’t know,” adds Deyrmenjian, “So for them, it’s, ‘I have never used a sewing machine.... so what are we waiting for—show me how!’ Once they have the basics of how to thread the machine, they are off and running. Sewing is also good fun for kids.” “The sense of accomplishment that kids and adults get from making something is fantastic to watch over the course of our classes. We had a 9-year-old girl in our beginner’s sewing class, and her father called to say, ‘she has never used a sewing machine before.... is that ok?’ My answer, ‘it’s perfect.’ The young girl then made a pencil bag with a zipper closure her first day and an A-line skirt her 2nd day. She also made a beautiful jeweled headband, and importantly, she was so thrilled to learn.”

The-Cutting Room recently had a mom with her two daughters take a class together. They each made a tote bag—a successful experience that was fun for both mom and girls. Making a tote bag is a great sewing project because kids can use it immediately. They can decorate the bag, and it gets their creative juices going. Making a dress, or a sweatshirt is an excellent project because participants learn how to put in a zipper and how to make button holes. “These are clothing items that kids wear or use every day,” adds Deyrmenjian, “and it makes them see things so differently when they later look through magazines or Snapchat! Or even how they view just getting dressed. They start thinking how things get put together.” RESOURCES: The-Cutting Room.com: sewing classes & parties for kids quiltedbear.ca: Ladner sewing classes for kids 9–15 years sproutingchefs.com: cooking & gardening classes www.projectchef.ca: Project CHEF Education Society Dizzywhisk.com: in-home cooking classes & cooking lesson birthday parties for kids, teens, and adults.

Fun Wintertime Activities to beat the Winter Blues

A

s the beautiful autumn leaves have all changed, and the cooler temperatures are upon us, I am reminded that winter is fast approaching. At my last book signing in Kelowna in October, many parents, grandparents and educator/caregivers were asking me questions about fun and age-appropriate ideas and activities for the upcoming winter months and holiday season. I was excited to share my experiences and ideas with them from the past 35 years in my rewarding field of early childhood education and as a mother of a very busy son. As every parent knows and has shared with me over the years, keeping children “entertained” with fun and exciting activities, other than screen-time, can be challenging when it is raining or too cold to be outside playing in the winter months. Fear not! I have included 16 great ideas for how to prevent “the winter blues” and keep children occupied when the weather outside is frightful. 24 bcparent.ca • holiday issue 2016

Even though it’s cold, roast marshmallows, drink hot chocolate and make S’mores. Sing campfire songs, tell stories, and have a fun and safe evening together!

simple ways to boost your immunity naturally this winter

By Michelle W. Book, CHFA’s in-house holistic nutritionist

e often forget that moms and dads don’t get sick days, as parenting is more than a full-time job—it’s a 24/7 commitment. Unfortunately, although it can be extremely difficult, if we want to do a good job as parents, we have a responsibility to look after ourselves first. The old cliché “take care of yourself first or you’ll have nothing left to give others,” is especially true during the winter cold and flu season. A recent survey conducted by the Canadian Health Food Association (CHFA) found that 54% of Canadians typically get sick in the winter months. The same survey uncovered that 91% of respondents say their overall health impacts their level of happiness. As the in-house holistic nutritionist at CHFA and as a mom, I’m committed to 28 bcparent.ca • holiday issue 2016

helping BC parents find natural ways to boost their immune system to ensure when the bugs do attack, their bodies are primed to fight back. We have identified four key pillars to help naturally prevent you and your family from getting sick this season.

A recent study found that even a daily brisk walk can cut your number of sick days by more than half!

Our pillars include nutrition, exercise, mind fulness, and sleep. Read on to discover how to incorporate these pillars into your daily routine and resolve to make 2017 the happiest and healthiest year yet for you and your family.

Pillar 1: Nutrition

As a parent, preparing and eating nutritious meals can take a backseat when it comes to our busy and “on-the-go” lifestyles. But research shows that a lack of proper nutrition has been linked to decreased immunity and increased risk of illness. That’s why it’s essential to eat a balanced diet rich in healthy and organic whole foods, and to supplement with natural health products when necessary. There are tons of fun and easy organic recipes at chfa.ca that are simple to make and are great for grab-andgo nutrition. My favourite is the Apple Pie Buckwheat Oats that can be made the night before and enjoyed all week. I also try to incorporate immune system boosting foods, like garlic and nuts, into my family’s everyday meal plan. Cashews Continued on page 30

and pecans, for example, provide the perfect blend of immune-boosting nutrients, including protein, vitamin E, zinc, and selenium, while garlic has been shown to reduce cold symptoms and improve immune cell activity. If you’re unable to incorporate garlic into your meal preparation due to picky eaters in the family, you can still enjoy the health benefits of garlic through an odourless garlic supplement.

Pillar 2: Exercise

Probably the most common New Year’s resolution is a commitment to make more time for exercise, but this can be tough to accomplish on the best of days, especially for busy parents. It’s important to remember that exercise doesn’t have to mean hitting the gym or going for a run. A little movement throughout the day goes a long way and the health benefits can be tremendous. A recent study found that even a daily brisk walk can cut your number of sick days by more than half! Research also suggests that exercise can help protect our immune systems from certain illnesses by flushing out bacteria from our lungs and airways and improving circulation. If you can only get a small amount of exercise each day, you might want to consider including a supplement in your routine to enhance the benefits. I take a krill oil capsule regularly. When coupled with exercise, krill oil supplementation can help 30 bcparent.ca • holiday issue 2016

increase white blood cell production, which helps sustain immune function. I encourage parents to speak to their health care practitioner about which supplements can help them keep moving.

Pillar 3: Mindfulness

Being a parent also means limited “me” time, which makes practicing mindfulness a challenge. I try to remind people that mindfulness doesn’t have to be hard work, it can be as easy as paying attention to your breathing or beginning your day by stating three things you’re grateful for. When we forget to be mindful, the negative effects of stress can creep in and affect our immunity. Stress can lead to restlessness, lack of sleep, poor diet and anxiety, all of which can have serious implications on our health and happiness. Incorporating mindfulness into your lifestyle can help to minimize the occurrence, length and severity of the flu or common cold. There are a few go-to supplements that I turn to that help me manage stress, my favourite one being probiotics. A large volume of evidence supports the view that the immune system is a key communicator between the gut and brain, which plays an important role in stress-related behaviours. So, if you’re ingesting good bacteria, like probiotics, you’re more likely to be improving your stress levels, and subsequently your immune system as well.

Pillar 4: Sleep

As the mother of a toddler, I don’t always get a good night’s sleep. And too many restless nights can lead to getting run-down or sick. That’s why it’s important for me to catch up on my Z’s when I’m feeling under the weather, and apparently, I’m not alone. When asked what they do to improve their well-being when feeling under the weather, 72% of British Columbians reported sleep as their number-one answer—for a good reason, too. Sleep deprivation can impact the activity of our immune cells, making it tough for our bodies to identify and fight cold and flu bugs. Shockingly, the percentage of adults who sleep less than six hours per night is currently greater than at any other time on record. I also to turn to a few natural remedies when I’m under the weather to help improve my sleep in order to support a healthy immune system. One is magnesium, a mineral that has been shown to calm the nervous system, induce relaxation, reduce blood pressure, and even increase energy during the day, which are all important factors when trying to get some rest. Another is melatonin. This nerve hormone is well known in the natural health world for increasing total sleep time and reducing the amount of time it takes to fall asleep. Of course, cutting down on screen time, like TV, cellphone and computer use before bed will also help you sleep more soundly, as studies show that blue light emitted from devices confuses our biological clocks and subsequently our sleep patterns. As parents, it can be hard to put your health before your kids’. But CHFA’s four pillars of immunity are designed to help you feel better and more energized, so you can be there when your kids need you. I encourage all moms and dads to chat with their health care practitioners about the best ways to keep bugs at bay this season and consider supplementing if needed. Have a happy and healthy winter and visit chfa.ca for more tips on how to boost your immunity naturally. Michelle W.
