Perforation with imagination Building and Construction Review is proud to present EE Ingleton with its 2014 Innovation award for Perforated Panels. Established in 1976 by Richard Ingleton and Graham Calderbank, Sheffield based EE Ingleton Engineering Ltd began trading in the animal feedmilling industry, manufacturing and supplying swing hammers and screens. Still a significant element of the business, success led to the expansion of the perforated products department, allowing EE Ingleton to supply a comprehensive variety of perforated panels directly to the architectural and engineering markets. In the architectural world, EE Ingleton work closely with clients, and everyone involved in projects including designers and main contractors. This allows them to ensure that solutions are tailor-made to the exact requirements of each individual project or application, and designed to specific budget constraints. Tony Hodges, Managing Director at EE Ingleton, commented: “Our company ethic is pride in our work and customer service. Many of our major customers have worked with us for several years, across a number of projects, as our approach results in a very high level of customer loyalty and repeat business. We treat small jobs requiring only a handful of panels in the same way

as major projects and our minimum order quantity is one.” Ingleton Engineering completed supply of perforated Tony Hodges, Managing Director image panels at EE Ingleton with the prestigious for the new 2014 Innovation award for Riverside Perforated Panels development at Kingston upon Thames, using their new PicPerf© system. Working closely with Cadisch MDA ltd & architects Haworth Tomkins on the project, Ingletons produced the photographic image panels based on a classic motion study by the Victorian photographer Eadweard Mybridge and also a photograph of the local river scene. The perforated panels produce a subtle image during daylight hours, and are then LED back-lit to stunning effect during the evening. The visually striking installation greatly enhances the atmosphere of the setting for visitors to the café bars & shops.

The shingles are free to swing on pins, so that the surface of the kinetic facades ripple & react to air movement around the building proving a dynamic, ever changing facade. Each section of kinetic façade is set in a frame of perforated metal lace panels, deploying a variety of lighting techniques to add depth to the pattern. In this way the appearance of the building can change quite dramatically depending on the time of day, night, year or even the weather conditions.

Typical steel barriers have a 100% impact force to the floor, bending the metal and ripping up the floor – meaning structures will need to be replaced or repainted. A-SAFE barriers have a maximum 20% impact (the rest is absorbed), so there’s no need for repairs. Because next to no damage is done, there are huge maintenance cost savings with A-SAFE. These first-rate systems also act as a pathway, directing personnel safely around the area, streamlining efficiency. Security Products Award
Security measures you can trust The award-winning security provider Acclaimed Security are renowned for offering businesses all over the country a whole host of reliable security measures. The company, based in Leeds, was established in 2002 and has recently been presented with the Security Product of the Year 2014 for its revolutionary GuardSafe technology. The respected business has the capability to offer clients security services such as Key Holding and Alarmed Response, CCTV Monitoring, Mobile Patrols and Security Guarding. The safe, trustworthy and cost-effective solutions provided by Acclaimed Security serve to allow peace of mind for clients who want to ensure their premises, commodities and personnel are kept well protected with the latest security systems available. Roy Unwin, Managing Director of Acclaimed Security, said: “We are an accountable security company because we are one of the very few ACS approved business in the industry. We have won 10 awards over the last couple of years, all of which are associated with company excellence, and we are consistently commended for being a performance related achiever.” Their award-winning GuardSafe product is remarkable because it alerts companies that a guard is present at the site, providing clients with the assurance that their business is being safely supervised. The system works using specialist boxes fitted to areas which would benefit from regular checks, and 4 patrol routes are designated around the perimeter of a building.

If the duration between each GuardSafe box is shorter than the designated patrol time, the system will reject it and the guard will have to repeat the patrol until it is completed properly. “GuardSafe is a unique patrol logging system which works in real time. This means companies can have results within seconds – if there are any issues, they are flagged up immediately and dealt with accordingly. This is a vast difference to other businesses, whose results are typically provided after a much greater timespan – some can take as long as a month! We are proud to say that GuardSafe is a system exclusive to Acclaimed Security; no-one else in the world has it.” Acclaimed Security's security measures have been utilized by a number of industrial and commercial outlets and well-regarded blue-chip companies including Leeds Teaching Hospitals, Leeds City Council, Freight Liner, Tarmac, Seabrook Crisps, Vion Foods, Brake Brothers and Liberty Living. Acclaimed Security has recently secured a massive contract which they will be putting into place at some point in the foreseeable future. The agreement is highly confidential, but it will double the company’s revenue streams and will subsequently see the establishment doubling in size. This new enterprise involves work regarding

is fuelled by wood from the company’s very own sustainably managed forestry plantations.
Uist Asco are best known for sustainably processing bulk dried Ascophyllum Nodosum seaweed for use in various industries, including the agricultural, horticultural, aqua-cultural, pharmaceutical and alginates sectors. Situated in the Western Isles, Scotland, Uist Asco operates a state-of-the-art processing plant which is powered by renewable energy in order to dry the specialist seaweed. After the seaweed is dried, it is sold as organic fertiliser, animal feed and used to extract chemicals like valuable alginates. “We dry our seaweed with indirect heat using a 999kw biomass boiler,” Graeme Todd, Marketing Manager at Uist Asco, explained. “Hot water from this boiler is piped to our custom built drier where the water is pumped through heat exchangers to heat air which is passed through the drying bed. “Drying the seaweed this way ensures
it doesn’t get burnt or tainted with fuel residues; other products on the market are black, unlike our bright green product. The gentle drying technique also ensures all the valuable bioactives found within are unharmed and preserved.” Dried seaweed is a desirable component because it has great usage in areas susceptible to drought, due to its excellent water retention capabilities. Because the marine algae are rich in cytokinins and auxins – which promote growth in crops – it is commonly used to stimulate growth in plants while increasing organic matter in poor soils. The seaweed obtained by Uist Asco is 100% pure and extremely sought after by industries worldwide. It is dried using a biomass furnace which
Uist Asco are superior in the industry because they are organic approved, and their manufacturing process is monitored closely by the Soil Association, SOPA and the Agricultural Industries Federation, ensuring the product meets all of the necessary requirements. Additionally, all seaweed gathering is carried out by hand, in compliance with a strategic cropping plan which guarantees sustainability, the shores of North Uist are known as being some of the cleanest in the UK. The production of the plant has resulted in a more regular and environmentally friendly supply which more efficiently serves the seaweed harvesting industry. The company has received a lot of interest in the market ever since its establishment in 2013, and has effectively developed to a major employer on the Islands. Cat-Trap – a new range of temporary exhaust filter units HSE Fluid Engineering has recently launched a new range of their popular temporary fitment exhaust filter units, designed for use on diesel engines that are working under load in confined spaces.
Looks different, because it is different
The World Health Organisation has recently confirmed that the carbon particulates generated by diesel engines can be hazardous to human health and are carcinogenic when inhaled. This can be a particular problem from nonroad machinery applications, which are often hired for temporary periods and typically operate with ‘stop-start’ cycles, creating variable conditions which can be challenging to resolve. The new HSE Cat-trap filter unit combines a catalytic converter, to minimise harmful gaseous emissions, with a particulate filter which captures the harmful carbon particles. The efficiency of the particulate filter captures 95% of particles 0.2 micron and larger. This new combined unit offers a highly costeffective solution to diesel exhaust emission
MicroPro A new environmental benchmark for timber preservatives
control – lower harmful gaseous emissions and a direct control of the diesel particulates from start up. The unit is particularly useful for diesel engines that are producing hot exhaust emissions, such as construction equipment, mobile plant, or mobile platforms being used inside factories or tunnels.
• No organic solvents (VOC free) • Clean even light green colour, weathering to an attractive honey tan colour
A range of units are available to suit different engine sizes and applications. For more information, please contact HSE Fluid Engineering on 0870 421 4206.

Air Quality Monitoring System Lanarkshire based Gas Sensor Manufacturer, SST Sensing Ltd recently launched their first multi-gas sensor system into the instrumentation market. The AQAlert+ Environmental Monitoring System was designed for the surveillance of air quality in schools, offices, homes, public buildings and hotel rooms. Being a new and exciting direction for SST, their overwhelming knowledge and experience in the sensing and control industry makes the decision in moving higher up the value chain in developing sensor systems opposed to sensor components an easy one to make. The affordable AQ-Alert+ System measures the concentration of carbon dioxide in the air with options to also measure oxygen concentration, temperature, atmospheric pressure and relative humidity. Marketing Manager at SST, Siobhan Dalziel explains that, “As well as offering standard versions of the AQ-Alert+, which suit most customers’

application requirements, the AQ-Alert+ is completely configurable, meaning that you can customise the system to exactly meet your specific application needs. We feel that this flexibility to customise exactly what the customer wants, as well as offering a basic standard unit, gives us competitive edge from anything else that is on the market today.” Any combination of output is available and the traffic light LED indicators can be set to illuminate at your chosen CO2 levels. Construction dust, noise and vibration exposure monitoring Construction is synonymous with noise, dust and vibration which can potentially harm the workforce (or impact on neighbouring properties) as the HSE’s recent blitz highlighted. So, with the adage ‘you can’t manage what you don’t measure’ in mind, Casella offers a range of solutions to simplify the task of making risk or impact assessments. These range from hand-held instruments for conducting spot measurements of noise, dust or vibration levels in real-time, bodily worn devices for longer surveys, through to semi-permanent or fixed systems. Boundary Guardian for example is a fixed system, which as the name suggests, monitors at the site boundary for any combination of noise, dust or vibration which can alert via email or text if levels are exceeded and will produce reports accessible on-line for compliance purposes. If Health & Safety is more of a concern, you can be amongst the first to see Casella’s latest innovation in personal noise dosimetry at The Health & Safety Event at the NEC, 24th-26th March.
Register your interest now at info@ casellasolutions.com or better still get connected with Casella and visit stand F36 where Casella will also showcase their classic range of sound level meters and personal sampling pumps plus they will be launching the HAVex hand arm vibration meter, a simple yet effective solution to vibration exposure assessments. Construction businesses jump at chance to hire Defibs
Dave Thomas from hire specialists Survey & Laser with Cardiac Science’s latest Powerheart G5 defibrillator Some of the UK’s leading building and construction names have snapped up automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in a new hire scheme set up by leading manufacturers Cardiac Science and specialists to the sector, Supply UK. These include Carillion, Almagamated Construction (AMCO) and Balfour Beatty. With 13,000* deaths at work from sudden cardiac arrest every year in the UK the innovative move – first revealed at the Health and Safety 2014 exhibition in October – will take Cardiac Science’s latest Powerheart G5 AED to where it is needed most. It is the first AED to combine real-time CPR guidance and fast shock times and the only AED on the market which will only give a shock if required. It has been designed to literally talk a rescuer through the process step by step. Dave Thomas, Managing Director of Survey & Laser, the part of Supply UK tasked with making the new business model work, said reaction was positive from the start.
construction gangs on projects with finite timescales. Cardiac Science Managing Director, Shaun Ingram said the hire aspect completed a three-way approach to getting defibrillators to customers. “We can now offer firms the option to purchase outright, lease or hire defibs to suit their circumstances. “Hire is the perfect solution for companies setting up project teams on construction and building work.” The G5 can be hired on a week by week basis and is then returned when the project is completed. Those hiring get training and there is video in support showing the intuitive operation of the defib, giving those who suffer from an SCA the best chance of survival. Shaun Ingram again: “It has been a further step towards taking away obstacles and increasing affordability, but the success of the hire scheme is down to thinking about the way building companies work.”
“Literally from the first morning we launched, we had enquiries from the leading names and have been hiring them out ever since.

Nothing to waste With our ever-more ‘throw-away’ society, Waste is now big business and has moved on from the ‘dig a hole in the ground’ mentality to an increasingly innovative and careful industry. Part of this revolution in the way in which companies think of waste has taken place in the construction sector, which still accounts for approximately a third of the tonnage to landfill each year. This has been declining, thanks in part to the business acumen of Outstanding Woman in Construction 2012, Lara Ayris, with her company Waste Plan Solutions. Lara has been championing more intelligent planning and handling of construction waste for the past 5 years, initially impelled by the then mandatory Site Waste Management Plans. The SWMP compliance regulations were repealed on 1st December 2013 as part of the ‘Red tape challenge.’ This might have spelled disaster for Lara’s business, as her large customer base had adopted Waste Plan Solutions’ bespoke software solutions in order to meet the regulatory requirements.
Turnover this year is anticipated to exceed last year by 10%+, which, with a low cost base and plans to develop new software tools, should underpin continued success. As Lara Ayris, Lara says, Managing Director “There is no time to waste.” of Waste Plan Much of the Solutions new business for WPS comes via BREEAM or Code assessors, so Lara is actively seeking additional assessors, who are rewarded with commission, to expand the customer base further. For further information or to apply to help with referrals, please contact Lara at WPS on 01604 859961 or lara.ayris@wasteplansolutions.co.uk.

Chimney Sheep Ltd showcased at Grand Designs live as Kevin McCloud Green Hero Having an open chimney is like leaving a window open all the time. Warm air escapes from a room at a rate of over 40 cubic metres per hour – and cold air is pulled in round doors, windows, through plug sockets and even through walls to replace it. So insulating the chimney doesn’t just stop chimney draughts, it also reduces draughts in other parts of the building as well. Each year, Kevin McCloud (pictured right) hand picks a selection of the best ecoinnovations on the market. As the face of the Grand Designs brand, Kevin McCloud has documented hundreds of buildings over the past two decades. This has given Kevin an enormously wide knowledge of materials, the latest technologies and new sustainable practices out there in the construction market, making him a touchstone for innovative ideas and inventive products.
Chimney Sheep Ltd were delighted to be chosen by Kevin McCloud as one of his Green Heroes. Most people are unaware of the fact that they are losing heat up chimneys. Chimney insulation products are largely ignored by the insulation industry. Being provided with a stand in a prominent location by the main stage at the heart of the show was an excellent opportunity to showcase the product and explain the issue to thousands of customers. Hauraton Project Updates
Berths 201/202 become Southampton Container Terminal 5 With globalization and the ever increasing levels of world trade, container ships have increased in length, draught and capacity. The current generation of large container vessels are now some 366m long, 49m wide, with a draught of 15.2m. Built in the late 1960’s the facilities at Southampton’s Western Docks were the first in the UK specifically designed for container vessels. With the increase in vessel size, the latest Post-Panamax vessels can now carry up to 20,000TEUs, (Twenty foot Equivalent Units) so having berth capacity, cranes, transfer and handling facilities capable of processing the TEUs is seen as essential by the port authority. The Statutory Harbour Authority at Southampton, ABP (Associated British Ports), decided by combining berths 201 and 202 to provide a 600m quay at an increased water depth of 16m, was sufficient to accommodate the largest container ships. The new facility, known as SCT5, (Southampton Container Terminal 5) has cost £80million. The remaining £50 to £70million in the port’s
18
budget will be spent later on increasing the capacity of berths 204 and 207. Volker Stevin was awarded the design and build contract for the reconstruction and deepening of SCT5 with Mott MacDonald providing the design of the main quay, paving and drainage for the reconstructed terminal. Mott MacDonald’s work is part of a larger project, started in September 2012 by DP World Southampton and ABP, to build a new £150million quay at the Southampton docks container terminal. As the new Terminal’s concreted area is about 4.5 hectares, effective surface water drainage was a major consideration to ensure efficient all-weather operation. Hauraton supplied 1,100m of RECYFIX® HICAP® 680, high capacity drainage channels to remove surface water and allow the container transfer and handling area to remain open even under severe storm conditions. Designed to resist the rigours of site work, the Hauraton
channels were installed in two runs. Andy Beirne, Hauraton‘s Project Engineer commented, “Each one metre unit was easily manipulated into position on site and no channel breakages were reported during the installation process.” To further reduce installation times, end-of-run caps and pipe connection sockets were also supplied with other connection points moulded into the sides and bottom of each channel. This was a major advantage for the contractor as it helped speed the completion of the project. Factory fitted with 28mm slotted ductile iron inlets, the channels comply with a loading class of F900 so can easily take the weight of a lifting truck with a fully laden container. Importantly, once installed the complete system is highly resilient to the twisting forces imposed by the wheeled vehicles employed. The RECYFIX® HICAP® 680 channel system installed at SCT5 is able to accept a volume of water of 487,300 litres. Large concrete rings were used as
gullies and access points for the HICAP® 680 units. Tim Connolly, Hauraton’s Sales and Marketing Director for comments about the project, “We are pleased that the SCT5 project has been such a success and we are delighted that the channel runs were installed with no problems reported. I’m sure this contributed to the rapid build progress of the job.” Operations at the new quay, which is equipped with five ship-to-shore super postpanamax cranes, started in January 2014. RECYFIX® HICAP® High Capacity Surface Water Drainage System As the main RECYFIX® HICAP® channel components are made from recycled PolyethylenePE-PP they are not susceptible to corrosion. Not only is no prime polymer used in the
manufacture of RECYFIX® channels but it is the shredded recycled material, not reformed pellets, that is fed directly into the injection moulding machines providing even more energy savings. By affording a superior overall hydraulic performance, the HICAP® system generally allows engineers and contractors’ flexibility in surface design and installation, reducing the number of channel runs normally required to drain a given area. This reduction means less underground excavations, materials and vastly reduced installation time. As there are fewer runs required, the surfaces strength is not compromised whilst future maintenance and cleaning will also be reduced. T 01582 501380 sales@hauraton.co.uk www.hauraton.co.uk

The Wet Roof Pro from Buckleys Buckleys (UVRAL) Ltd. have announced the imminent launch of their ‘Wet Roof Pro’ roof leak detector. Designed to be used on flat roofs in wet conditions, the Wet Roof Pro complements Buckleys’ existing range of leak and pinhole detectors with added benefits such as a new, compact carrying case, improved ergonomics, clearer LCD display, simplified set-up and full CE compliance. The Wet Roof Pro uses the ‘earth leakage’ or ‘vector-mapping’ method of finding roof defects in which a Pulse Generator unit is used to create an electromagnetic field within a set area as defined by a boundary wire (250m of wire is included in the kit) around the perimeter of the test area. A compact Detector Unit (worn by the user) with two hand-held test probes held in contact with the roof surface detects anomalies in the electromagnetic field created by leaks and directs the user to their location. The Wet Roof Pro is ideal for finding leaks in hot-melt, single-ply and asphalt roofs and comes with a full one-year back-tobase warranty for peace of mind. For extra reassurance, customers who register their purchase of Buckleys’ products online now

automatically qualify for an additional 3 month extension to the warranty, free of charge*. Alongside the Wet Roof Pro, Buckleys also manufacture a range of detectors capable of finding roof leaks and pinholes in dry conditions so – whatever the weather – Buckleys have a leak detector to suit the working environment and reduce downtime caused by inclement weather. Buckleys also offer full service, calibration and repair facilities and comprehensive product training courses from their head office in Folkestone, Kent. A negative safety culture could have potentially fatal consequences Research findings from a YouGov survey conducted on behalf of Seton have shown that health and safety is not always prioritised in small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and that a high proportion of accidents at work could have been avoided. In order to make health and safety a top priority for businesses, a fundamental shift in attitude towards safety is necessary. Stephen Thomas, Health and Safety Technical Consultant at Croner Solutions (a leading business consultancy in the health and safety industry), shares his thoughts on some of the research outcomes and provides expert advice on how to improve safety standards in the future. YouGov survey findings reveal that 62% of senior decision makers at SMEs admit to a number of barriers preventing them from investing more in health and safety. On top of the usual cost and time constraints, the lack of a healthy safety culture seems to be
a key obstacle. 20% of employers surveyed believe that there is too much bureaucracy involved, an attitude particularly prevalent in construction, and 13% of employers stated that employees are often resistant to following health and safety procedures. A shocking 21% of senior decision makers held the attitude that health and safety is not that important in their industry. 10% of construction employers held this belief despite that fact that the construction industry accounted for nearly half of all workplace fatalities last year according to the latest Health and Safety Executive report.
