St James’ Church, Birkdale gets the Smith’s touch! Twelve of Smith’s Caspian Universal fan convectors, partnered with a new boiler have provided St James’ Church in Birkdale with a perfect, and much needed, modern heating solution. The contractor, Colin Wakefield of Wakefield & Wilson in Liverpool recommended Smith’s Caspians because of their ability to heat large areas quickly, efficiently and at a low cost. The old system was outdated and ineffective at achieving the temperature required to heat the church successfully.
Smith’s fan convectors are provided as standard in white, but can be painted in a variety of different colours to match the interior of a building. As St James has a mainly brown interior, it was important that the Caspian’s matched the colour scheme to avoid looking out of place. Each Caspian was hand-painted brown especially for this project and the vicar and the congregation are very impressed with the overall look of the product.

Colin Wakefield had worked with Smith’s products in churches before and found that the Caspians were successful in bringing the building up to a comfortable heat much quicker than an average radiator, and for a reasonable cost.

Product Innovation Award
Providing Traffic Management Solutions across the UK With vast experience working within the traffic industry, there is only one company you can turn to when it comes to the arrangement and implementation of road traffic management surveys and schemes. This is why we are keen to present Nationwide Traffic Solutions (NTS) with our highly coveted Product Innovation profile here at Building and Construction Review. NTS has both the knowledge and the resources to readily provide the most suitable solutions for customers across the width and breadth of the UK, meeting individual requirements with great ease and efficiency. Operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week throughout the course of the year ensures that the company’s vast array of products and services can be accessed on demand and around-the-clock. Founded by husband and wife team Richard and Grace Goodall, the traffic management provider focuses on the provision of concentrated consultancy services, CAD plans, high speed services and street works; formulating stringently developed plans that are tailored specifically to suit separate locations and applications. “Traffic management is a standalone industry but we support many sectors such as utilities, construction, security and event planning (to name just a few),” commented Company Director Grace Barker. “Here at NTS we offer a personalised, friendly service whilst focusing on building strong customer relationships in order to truly understand specific needs. We also find it particularly useful to forge close partnerships with suppliers, as this enables us to provide a quick and reliable service. “We have recently undergone a service upgrade which allows us to offer a comprehensive range of consultancy amenities, such as traffic management plans for one off sites or major routes and works on high speed roads, motorways and carriageways. We provide full council liaison and have the facility to obtain licences and Symology EToN
notices, and we are proud of our extensive experience with large craning, access and lifting companies.” The organisation’s main activity revolves around design and business consultancy, services which are wholly supported by the completion of fundamental site surveys (for clearer overviews) and deliberations with the necessary institutions and national bodies. Safer and more effective traffic management facilities and systems can be rolled out once in-house design teams have carefully considered all aspects with project synopses and the involvement of local authorities, emergency service providers and transport providers. The custom-made traffic management plans are designed to provide peace of mind for the client, whether organising road closures, diversions and marshalls or installing new traffic lights (2, 3, 4 and up to 8-way temporary systems and double-headed lights included), resourceful contraflow systems and temporary pedestrian crossings. Through constant communication all requirements can be met appropriately, and the pre-arranged consultations are put into place to maximise customer reassurance. Other important services include equipment hire, the supply of variable message and legend signs (for additional information) and the instigation of operative diversion schemes. This includes the sourcing of chapter 8 signage, cones and barriers (such as water-filled, Heras fencing and crowd control) and the setup of census points, vehicle counts, convoy schemes, in-house sign writing and leaflet drops. In regards to the roadworks side of the business, cranes and platforms can be dispatched to optimise safety and proficiency onsite. When asked to discuss the company’s ethic, Grace was keen to detail the other meaning behind the abbreviated NTS, “We are committed to the continuous improvement of not only overall company growth but of our people as well,”
she informed us. “We take great pride in what we do and what we achieve, and this is evident with our core values, which are presented as a selection of words summarising what we are all about and what we believe in. “N means never too much trouble – we strive to offer a top quality and personal traffic management service and we come highly recommended in this industry. T represents talent; our team consists of carefully handpicked professionals that are highly qualified, experienced, hardworking and a great laugh. We continuously invest in our staff members by offering support, additional learning and a great working environment. The S is for safety, which is at the forefront of our minds 100% of the time – after all, it is what we do!” NTS started as one depot in North Lincolnshire, but the increased demand in London and the surrounding counties led to the company establishing another facility in Essex in 2011. The brand has since become a reputable traffic management solutions provider, having grown substantially to operate across the whole of the South of England. Plans for even greater progression are currently under development, particularly with the recent appointment of Chris Cowley as the new North England Operations Manager, and the fact that the group are hoping to have acquired a new depot in the West of England by the end of 2017. If you are interested in finding out more about NTS and its innovative range of traffic management products and services then feel free to get in touch with the company today. All enquiries will be responded to accordingly by the organisation’s dedicated workforce of industry experts, so you can rest assured that you will receive the guidance and support that you require. Cyberhomes wins ‘Best Home Cinema over £100,000’ European Award
Cyberhomes vintage themed home cinema project won this year’s CEDIA “Best Home Cinema over £100,000” award.
It’s been an award-winning year for UK smart home experts Cyberhomes. Back in February they won the international ITSA ‘Best Whole House Integration’ award and then just last month they took away the prestigious CEDIA ‘Best Home Cinema over £100,000’ European award. Cyberhomes use leading home technology control systems such as Savant Pro, Control4 and Crestron to integrate lighting, heating, security and audiovisual systems into a single, easy-to-use control interface. This integration also allows the various technologies in the home to ‘talk to each other’ and in so doing introduces the capability of home automation. The home cinema in London which impressed the CEDIA judges had the very latest in AV technology such as 4K Ultra HD projection and Dolby Atmos immersive surround sound; yet was themed to look

like a vintage cinema from the homeowner’s youth. Lutron lighting control and motorised curtains are integrated with the AV control system to create an involving home cinema experience. Today’s clients are keen to maximise the opportunities presented by new smart homes technology but often with as little on show as possible, minimising ‘wall clutter.’ Close liaison with interior designers and architects is therefore key to optimising best performance and visual design. And smart homes specialists like Cyberhomes should be involved in building projects from the start, working alongside architects, developers, interior designers and M&E consultants to integrate the system with the overall building design and performance. Jumbo Foodmarket A unique old industrial building on the former Stork site next to the Kromhouthallen in Amsterdam has been transformed into a state-of-theart Foodmarket. With a size of 2,600sq m, this new Foodmarket is similar to the Jumbo Foodmarket in Breda, which measures 6,000sq m.
Faay Vianen B.V., is a specialist in partition walls and ceiling systems with more than 4 decades experience. Not just a ‘run-of the mill’ supplier! We produce most of our partitions with a core of flax fibre, a by-product of the linen, paper and linseed oil production. This provides them with exceptional building-physical features: shockproof, fire-resistant and soundproof, thermally insulating, high screw retention, flexible and very easy to assemble.
Just as in the case of the Jumbo Foodmarket at Breda, FAAY VP 70 partition walls were used in this building, 1,300m2 of flexible wall elements, which can be reassembled but are nevertheless sturdy. Screw retention The wall panels have a flax fibre core (a by-product of the textile and linseed oil industries) with a plasterboard top layer on either side. The solid core gives excellent stability and constructive strength, high impact resistance and maximum screw retention with a release force ranging from 100kg (wood screws) to 120kg (coach screws) both without plugs or battens! This degree of screw retention offers a variety of possibilities, which combined with the built-in cable ducts and ease of dismantling, ensures that the layout possibilities are extensive. Speed is a must Speed was also a must for this project. Faay panels are

Advanced resin flooring solutions from Flowcrete Choosing the right building material involves carefully considering a long list of different factors. Everything from the location and budget to on-site challenges, construction schedules and future requirements can play a role in the decision making process. Flowcrete UK is committed to providing facilities managers for commercial and industrial environments with the practical advice that will help them understand which flooring system will best suit their needs. The resin flooring specialists tackles the demands of the floor build up by taking a holistic approach that is informed by over 30 years of industry experience. By accounting for the design, application and lifecycle aspects of the floor, alongside practicalities such as the on-site conditions and installation timetable, Flowcrete can advise on ideal systems and bespoke solutions that are tailored to meet the criteria of each location. For example industrial facilities need a finish that is able to resist the intensive on-site operations, which can often pose a threat to the floor surface through a combination of heavy impacts, corrosive chemicals, hot water washes and the movement of forklift trucks. The wide range of advanced resin flooring solutions from Flowcrete have been designed to meet these diverse and challenging demands to ensure an efficient workspace where productivity isn’t interrupted by a deteriorating floor finish. Facilities particularly at risk from severe chemical attack can take advantage of the corrosion protection provided by Flowchem VE. Commercial spaces need floors that will impress customers and retain an attractive, clean, flawless and eye-catching appearance in the face of heavy pedestrian traffic. Flowcrete has developed decorative solutions, such as the Mondéco range of seamless resin terrazzo flooring, which combines durability and cleanability with bespoke colour and design potential. Often a key concern of both industrial and commercial facilities is how to minimise the costly downtime and delays caused by a floor’s installation. The fast curing solution Flowfast range allows for new build projects to start follow on work and for existing buildings undergoing refurbishment to commence with profitable operations much sooner than usual. This methyl methacrylate (MMA) solution speeds up the curing process to a few hours, instead of the days or weeks of
8
alternative systems. It can also be applied on top of old concrete as well as asphalt, tiles, metal or wood, avoiding the time and expense normally required to take up the existing floor. Delaying refurbishments or initially installing a lower quality material may minimise costs and cut schedules in the short term – but both of these scenarios could lead to a number of costly floor failures further down the line. While often having a higher installation cost, the fact that resin floors avoid long periods of downtime to repair or refurbish the floor means that they are often the most cost-effective solution. Flowcrete works closely with architects and developers to identify the optimum flooring system for each location. Flowcrete’s resin based floors are seamless, impermeable and easy to clean, making them ideal for locations that need to maintain a hygienic environment. An unbroken surface, free from gaps, prevents dirt accumulation, and because the robustness of the finish avoids cracks appearing after extensive use. For locations that need to meet the highest levels of hygiene Flowcrete has created the antimicrobial system Flowfresh. This HACCP International certified range has the antibacterial agent Polygiene® incorporated throughout the resin material, which is able to eliminate up to 99.9% of bacteria on the floor’s surface. The adaptability of resin systems means that they can be enhanced in a variety of ways to further optimise the working environment, such as with anti-slip aggregates, anti-static technology, signage, superior corrosion resistance, UV resistance and more. To find out more about the benefits that Flowcrete’s floors can provide, head to: www.flowcrete.co.uk, email: uk@flowcrete.com or call: +44 (0)1270 753000.

Making sure no-one gets left behind Although fires are rare events, the impact can be devastating. Anyone with some level of responsibility for fire safety in non-domestic premises, new or old, will know the importance of carrying out a thorough fire risk assessment, in accordance with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. It is important to ensure that plans are put in place and steps taken to eliminate any risk – not only to the premises but to those staff and any visitors who may be within the facility at the time of an emergency. One critical element to any such plan, is how to safely evacuate a multi-storey building in the event of an emergency such as a fire, when lifts become inoperable. Anyone who may be within the building at the time of the evacuation must have a suitable ‘means of escape.’ This includes people with reduced or no mobility and individuals with underlying medical conditions, such as heart conditions or epilepsy which could be triggered as a result of heightened anxiety or exertion during an evacuation. In many work-place environments any employee that could face issues safely exiting a building during an evacuation, should have their own ‘Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan.’ However, premises open to the public such as restaurants, shops and

Bituchem returns to exhibit at Landscape Show 2016 The Bituchem Group, a UK specialist in attractive and innovative hard-landscaping solutions, is returning to exhibit at The Landscape Show at Battersea Park this September. The company, creators of Natratex and Colourtex, two materials which have been widely adopted in landscaping and development projects across the UK, will be exhibiting at the show with its team of specialists on hand to discuss the various landscaping solutions available. So far this year Bituchem’s flagship Natratex and Colourtex materials have been used to create new and exciting landscapes at Hertfordshire University and Butlins, as well as several primary schools, housing developments and local highways. Bituchem’s stand at the show will primarily demonstrate the versatility of the products, which can be used for all landscaping requirements, with tailored products available for heavy duty and sustainable drainage applications. Known for their aesthetic differences to black tarmac, Natratex and Colourtex offer a vibrant and exciting finish with the same durable qualities and performance as traditional asphalt. Both materials can be specified in a range of different colours, including buff, red, green, blue, grey and salmon to create a new landscape that
complements or contrasts with its surroundings. Natratex Cotswold has proved to be a particular favourite due to its attractive and stylish reflection of Cotswold Stone. The material has been used to create footpaths and small roadways that are surrounded by modern buildings using the light stone or a similar colour scheme. The material is created using naturallyoccurring aggregates bound with a specially formulated clear resin binder for complete compactness and long lasting finish.
Natratex Gravel is also popular amongst landscape architects as it too offers a natural stone coloured finish and offers the same qualities as the rest of the Natratex range, although uses a darker blend of colours to the Cotswold alternative. The material gives an effective illusion of gravel stones yet offers a surprisingly smooth finish that is resistant to cracks and potholes, thus making it a very safe product to use in school playgrounds, parks and other areas of the public realm.
Time Circles’ stones are wonderful natural stone garden features that take their design roots from ancient monuments all over the UK and mainland Europe. Our stones have many applications — from decorative garden stones bringing beauty and structure to gardens, to adding mystery and encouraging exploration in landscapes. They always look fantastic and will enhance any surroundings.

Both materials can be specified in a range of different colours, including buff, red, green, blue, grey and salmon to create a new landscape that complements or contrasts with its surroundings.
Colourtex, named for its vibrant variety of finishes, has been widely used in commercial applications that require a splash of colour. Often used to match the corporate colours of a building or to create highlighted areas in multiuse games areas (MUGA), Colourtex can significantly reduce the cost of the project by eliminating the need for surface or demarcation paints. Colourtex can also be used across the public realm to highlight safety or cyclist routes. The material uses the same clear resin binder technology as Natratex to maintain the durability of the surface. This also ensures that the vibrancy of the aggregates do not fade as a result of regular pedestrian or vehicular use.

Last year, Bituchem expanded the uses of its products and launched a porous Natratex solution, which was introduced to the market at the Landscape Show last year. Designed to replicate the natural infiltration method of rainwater, Natratex Porous is a Sustainable Drainage Solutions (SuDS) and is best used in public areas where local flooding is a frequent issue. The material is laid on a porous receiving layer and allows rain water to permeate through the surface and find its way to a natural water course. This innovative method eliminates the need for conventional drainage systems, which have proved costly in comparison. Similarly, Bituchem has developed a Heavy Duty Natratex product which can be used in areas that see heavy vehicular use. The material is laid at a deeper thickness of 10mm for extra reinforcement so that the performance and longevity of the surface is not compromised. This particular material has been used on highways and through towns and cities and has recently been used in Redbridge as part of a resurfacing project throughout the town. The Bituchem team has developed its range of materials to offer unrivalled reliability and performance, which are just two of the many great benefits that the materials hold. Visit Bituchem at the show to find out more on how Natratex and Colourtex can be used to enhance landscaping projects.
